Recently, Brietzke, Silva and Sellers [‘Congruences related to an eighth order mock theta function of Gordon and McIntosh’, J. Math. Anal. Appl.479 (2019), 62–89] studied the number $v_{0}(n)$ of overpartitions of $n$ into odd parts without gaps between the nonoverlined parts, whose generating function is related to the mock theta function $V_{0}(q)$ of order 8. In this paper we first present a short proof of the 3-dissection for the generating function of $v_{0}(2n)$. Then we establish three congruences for $v_{0}(n)$ along certain progressions which are subsequences of the integers $4n+3$.

We present some inequalities for the mappings defined by Dragomir [‘Two mappings in connection to Hadamard’s inequalities’, J. Math. Anal. Appl.167 (1992), 49–56]. We analyse known inequalities connected with these mappings using a recently developed method connected with stochastic orderings and Stieltjes integrals. We show that some of these results are optimal and others may be substantially improved.

Let $\overline{t}(n)$ be the number of overpartitions in which (i) the difference between successive parts may be odd only if the larger part is overlined and (ii) if the smallest part is odd then it is overlined. Ramanujan-type congruences for $\overline{t}(n)$ modulo small powers of $2$ and $3$ have been established. We present two infinite families of congruences modulo $5$ and $27$ for $\overline{t}(n)$, the first of which generalises a recent result of Chern and Hao [‘Congruences for two restricted overpartitions’, Proc. Math. Sci. 129 (2019), Article 31].

Andrews [‘Binary and semi-Fibonacci partitions’, J. Ramanujan Soc. Math. Math. Sci.7(1) (2019), 1–6] recently proved a new identity between the cardinalities of the set of semi-Fibonacci partitions and the set of partitions into powers of 2 with all parts appearing an odd number of times. We extend the identity to the set of semi-$m$-Fibonacci partitions of $n$ and the set of partitions of $n$ into powers of $m$ in which all parts appear with multiplicity not divisible by $m$. We also give a new characterisation of semi-$m$-Fibonacci partitions and some congruences satisfied by the associated number sequence.

For a given prime $p$, we investigate the finite groups all of whose 2-minimal $p$-subgroups are complemented.

The range of a trigonometric polynomial with complex coefficients can be interpreted as the image of the unit circle under a Laurent polynomial. We show that this range is contained in a real algebraic subset of the complex plane. Although the containment may be proper, the difference between the two sets is finite, except for polynomials with a certain symmetry.

The class of all monolithic (that is, subdirectly irreducible) groups belonging to a variety generated by a finite nilpotent group can be axiomatised by a finite set of elementary sentences.

Zacharias [‘Proof of a conjecture of Merca on an average of square roots’, College Math. J.49 (2018), 342–345] proved Merca’s conjecture that the arithmetic means $(1/n)\sum _{k=1}^{n}\sqrt{k}$ of the square roots of the first $n$ integers have the same floor values as a simple approximating sequence. We prove a similar result for the arithmetic means $(1/n)\sum _{k=1}^{n}\sqrt[3]{k}$ of the cube roots of the first $n$ integers.

To study when a paratopological group becomes a topological group, Arhangel’skii et al. [‘Topological games and topologies on groups’, Math. Maced. 8 (2010), 1–19] introduced the class of $(\,\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD},G_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F1}})$-unfavourable spaces. We show that every $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}$-complete (or normal) $(\,\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD},G_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F1}})$-unfavourable semitopological group is a topological group. We prove that the product of a $(\,\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD},G_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F1}})$-unfavourable space and a strongly Fréchet $(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC},G_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F1}})$-favourable space is $(\,\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD},G_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F1}})$-unfavourable. We also show that continuous closed irreducible mappings preserve the $(\,\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD},G_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F1}})$-unfavourableness in both directions.

Let $G$ be a finite group with two primitive permutation representations on the sets $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}_{1}$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}_{2}$ and let $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}_{1}$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}_{2}$ be the corresponding permutation characters. We consider the case in which the set of fixed-point-free elements of $G$ on $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}_{1}$ coincides with the set of fixed-point-free elements of $G$ on $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}_{2}$, that is, for every $g\in G$, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}_{1}(g)=0$ if and only if $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}_{2}(g)=0$. We have conjectured in Spiga [‘Permutation characters and fixed-point-free elements in permutation groups’, J. Algebra299(1) (2006), 1–7] that under this hypothesis either $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}_{1}=\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}_{2}$ or one of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}_{1}-\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}_{2}$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}_{2}-\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}_{1}$ is a genuine character. In this paper we give evidence towards the veracity of this conjecture when the socle of $G$ is a sporadic simple group or an alternating group. In particular, the conjecture is reduced to the case of almost simple groups of Lie type.

For a finite group $G$, let $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E5}(G)$ denote the character graph built on the set of degrees of the irreducible complex characters of $G$. In this paper, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition which guarantees that the complement of the character graph $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E5}(G)$ of a finite group $G$ is a nonbipartite Hamiltonian graph.

For $f$ analytic in the unit disk $\mathbb{D}$, we consider the close-to-convex analogue of a class of starlike functions introduced by R. Singh [‘On a class of star-like functions’, Compos. Math.19(1) (1968), 78–82]. This class of functions is defined by $|zf^{\prime }(z)/g(z)-1|<1$ for $z\in \mathbb{D}$, where $g$ is starlike in $\mathbb{D}$. Coefficient and other results are obtained for this class of functions.

Barnard and Steinerberger [‘Three convolution inequalities on the real line with connections to additive combinatorics’, Preprint, 2019, arXiv:1903.08731] established the autocorrelation inequality

The Fock–Bargmann–Hartogs domain $D_{n,m}(\,\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}):=\{(z,w)\in \mathbb{C}^{n}\times \mathbb{C}^{m}:\Vert w\Vert ^{2}<e^{-\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}\Vert z\Vert ^{2}}\}$, where $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}>0$, is an unbounded strongly pseudoconvex domain with smooth real-analytic boundary. We compute the weighted Bergman kernel of $D_{n,m}(\,\unicode[STIX]{x1D707})$ with respect to the weight $(-\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C})^{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}}$, where $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}(z,w):=\Vert w\Vert ^{2}-e^{-\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}\Vert z\Vert ^{2}}$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}>-1$. Then, for $p\in [1,\infty ),$ we show that the corresponding weighted Bergman projection $P_{D_{n,m}(\,\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}),(-\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C})^{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}}}$ is unbounded on $L^{p}(D_{n,m}(\,\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}),(-\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C})^{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}})$, except for the trivial case $p=2$. This gives an example of an unbounded strongly pseudoconvex domain whose ordinary Bergman projection is $L^{p}$ irregular when $p\in [1,\infty )\setminus \{2\}$, in contrast to the well-known positive $L^{p}$ regularity result on a bounded strongly pseudoconvex domain.

We prove that if two $C^{1,1}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA})$ solutions of the second boundary value problem for the generated Jacobian equation intersect in $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}$ then they are the same solution. In addition, we extend this result to $C^{2}(\overline{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}})$ solutions intersecting on the boundary, via an additional convexity condition on the target domain.

If $\mathfrak{X}$ is a class of groups, we define a sequence $\mathfrak{X}_{1},\mathfrak{X}_{2},\ldots ,\mathfrak{X}_{k},\ldots$ of group classes by putting $\mathfrak{X}_{1}=\mathfrak{X}$ and choosing $\mathfrak{X}_{k+1}$ as the class of all groups whose nonnormal subgroups belong to $\mathfrak{X}_{k}$. In particular, if $\mathfrak{A}$ is the class of abelian groups, $\mathfrak{A}_{2}$ is the class of metahamiltonian groups, that is, groups whose nonnormal subgroups are abelian. The aim of this paper is to study the structure of $\mathfrak{X}_{k}$-groups, with special emphasis on the case $\mathfrak{X}=\mathfrak{A}$. Among other results, it will be proved that a group has a finite commutator subgroup if and only if it is locally graded and belongs to $\mathfrak{A}_{k}$ for some positive integer $k$.

Zhang [‘On hyperstability of generalised linear functional equations in several variables’, Bull. Aust. Math. Soc.92 (2015), 259–267] proved a hyperstability result for generalised linear functional equations in several variables by using Brzdęk’s fixed point theorem. We complete and extend Zhang’s result. We illustrate our results for general linear equations in two variables and Fréchet equations.

The main result of this note implies that any function from the product of several vector spaces to a vector space can be uniquely decomposed into the sum of mutually orthogonal functions that are odd in some of the arguments and even in the other arguments. Probabilistic notions and facts are employed to simplify statements and proofs.

If $A$ is a commutative $C^{\star }$-algebra and if $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}:A\rightarrow \mathbb{C}$ is a continuous multiplicative functional such that $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}(x)$ belongs to the spectrum of $x$ for each $x\in A$, then $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}$ is linear and hence a character of $A$.
