New powder X-ray diffraction data of Ca12Al14O32F2 (C11A7f), a cementitious compound, were collected on a conventional X-ray powder diffractometer; the cubic cell parameter is a=11.96269(6) Å, volume 1711.93(2) Å3 (space group I-43d (No. 220)). The strongest lines are 4.887(100), 2.676(95), 2.992(46), 2.443(46), 2.185(37), 3.198(32), 1.599(26), and 1.941(25). Reported intensities are validated by Rietveld analysis. The new data consist of measured intensities and cover a wider 2θ angular range with respect to the calculated PDF 25-394 and the indexed PDF 36-678: experimental, calculated, and difference patterns are reported together with crystal-chemical considerations.

The crystal structure of the Aurivillius compound Bi2BaTa2O9 prepared via the chemical route was determined by direct methods using EXPO97, and refined using the Rietveld method with conventional X-ray diffraction data. The structure was found to be tetragonal (space group I4/mmm, number 139) and Z=2, isomorphic of the Bi2BaNb2O9 reported by Blake and co-workers in the literature (1997). Two refinements were performed using the two asymmetry functions of DBWS-9807 (release 20/May/99). The unit cell for each case are: a=3.932 22(6) Å, c=25.5053(6) Å (RA) and a=3.932 50(7) Å, c=25.5069(6) Å (RCF). The differences for atom positions, interatomic distances and angles are in the range of one standard deviation. Final agreements factors are: Rwp=7.97%, S=1.84, RBragg=4.28%(RA), Rwp=7.98%, S=1.84, RBragg=4.30%(RCF). The occupancies of Ba and Bi in site 2b were refined but constrained to have their summation equal to 1.00. The same constraints were applied to the Ba and Bi of the 4e site. The results show that on site 2b there are 70% of Ba and 30% of Bi and on the site 4e there are 82% of Bi and 18% of Ba. The charge equilibrium is maintained for one standard deviation of the site occupancies.© 2000 International Centre for Diffraction Data.

Notwithstanding expectations of a pure pyrochlore structure (cubic space group Fd3m (227) with Z=8) terbium titanate turns out, like many pyrochlore compounds, to be slightly disordered in the cation and the oxygen lattice so that it partially (for 10%) resembles a structure with fluorite properties (space group Fm3m (225) with Z = 2).

The crystal structure of the mineral strontiodresserite, (Sr,Ca)Al2(CO3)2(OH)4⋅H2O, from the Francon Quarry, Montreal, Quebec, Canada, has been solved from laboratory powder diffraction data using a combination of charge-flipping and simulated annealing methods. The structure is orthorhombic in space group Pnma with a=16.0990(7), b=5.6133(3), and c=9.1804(4) Å (Z=4) and the framework of the mineral is isostructural with that of dundasite. The strontium has a coordination number of 9 and the carbonate anions form a bridge between the SrO9 polyhedra and AlO6 octahedra. The water molecule lies in a channel that runs parallel to the b axis. An ordered network of hydrogen atoms could be uniquely determined from crystal-chemical principles in the channels of strontiodresserite. Ab initio density functional theory (DFT) energy minimization of the whole structure gave results in full agreement with X-ray refinement results for nonhydrogen atoms. The stability of this model (as well as that of the corresponding model of dundasite) in the proposed Pnma space group was tested by DFT optimization in space group P1 of random small distortions of this structure. This test confirms that both minerals are isostructural, including their hydrogen-bond networks.

Hydrothermal formation reaction of tobermorite in the autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) process has been investigated by in situ X-ray diffraction. High-energy X-rays from a synchrotron radiation source in combination with a newly developed autoclave cell and a photon-counting pixel array detector were used. XRD measurements were conducted in a temperature range 100–190°C throughout 12 h of reaction time with a time interval of 4.25 min under a saturated steam pressure. To clarify the tobermorite formation mechanism in the AAC process, the effect of Al addition on the tobermorite formation reaction was studied. As intermediate phases, non-crystalline calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H), hydroxylellestadite (HE), and katoite (KA) were clearly observed. Consequently, it was confirmed that there were two reaction pathways via C-S-H and KA in the tobermorite formation reaction of Al containing system. In addition, detailed information on the structural changes during the hydrothermal reaction was obtained.

The crystal structure of the spinel polymorph of Fe2SiO4, synthesized at high temperature (900°C) and high pressure (70 kbar), was studied by the Rietveld analysis of X-ray powder diffraction data collected with a Guinier-Hägg camera. The compound is cubic, space group , with cell dimension: a= 8.2413(6) Å, V= 559.8(1) Å3, Z= 8, Cell Wt. = 1630.2, Dx= 4.835 g·cm−3, Do= 4.75 g·cm−3. The figure of merit is F10= 92(0.011, 10). The final R value is RF= 0.058. The crystal has a mixed normal-inverse spinel structure. The site occupancy refinement showed that 37.9% of the silicon was found in the octahedral site (M site), while 18.9% of the iron occupied the tetrahedral site (T site). Due to the larger displacement of Si4+ion by Fe2+ion, the positional parameter of oxygen atom (0.3689) is smaller than that of X-ray single crystal structure (0.3658), and the average Si-O bond (1.697(1)Å) is longer and Fe-O bond (2.112(1)Å) is shorter than those of X-ray single crystal structure.

A new diffraction pattern of the high-temperature and high-pressure polymorph Mg3(PO4)2-III (PDF 43-500) is given and indexed on the basis of a single-crystal structure refinement. It allows diffractogram indexing of the isostructural high-temperature and high-pressure form of Co3(PO4)2 (PDF 43-499).

A new polymorph of iodic acid, δ-HIO3, synthesized via aerosol spray pyrolysis was characterized with powder X-ray diffraction and its crystal structure was solved. We find that a previously misidentified phase of I4O9 hydrate is in fact a new polymorph of HIO3, which crystalizes in the orthorhombic space group P212121.

The two-dimensional XRD (GADDS) was used to characterize the microstructure of an applied self-leveling compound (SLC). A calcium aluminate cement based SLC was prepared on two different substrates (water absorbent and nonwater absorbent) to determine the vertical distribution of the crystalline phases. The application of the GADDS enables the detection of the phase composition of the hydrating mortar in horizontal slices. Thus the analysis could be carried out in position-sensitive mode at three different areas: near the bottom, in the center, and at the top of the mortar. For investigation of SLCs from the very early hydration stage up to 10 h of hydration, a custom-made in situ sample holder for the measurements was designed and constructed. The combination of the GADDS and the custom-made in situ sample holder provides the possibility to characterize additionally the time-dependent phase composition within the SLC. The nonabsorbent substrate has no effect on the hydration of the binder phases but the absorbent substrate influences the formation of ettringite. In the top layer of the SLC the ettringite content is reduced during the first hours of hydration. The absorbing forces of the substrate lead to migration of the mix water to the substrate. This lack of water results in the reduced formation of ettringite.

In this paper we present a high temperature heating device, working under defined environmental conditions, for a Siemens D500 Bragg–Brentano powder diffractometer. The powder sample is prepared in a flat mould on a metal block consisting either of copper or of platinum depending on the temperature range selected for investigations. Although the heating cell can be used separately under ambient conditions up to sample temperatures of 1000 °C, it is possible to work under defined environmental conditions in the temperature range between 20 and 200 °C and up to a water vapour pressure of 1000 mbar. For that purpose a special cover for the in situ control of temperature and water vapour pressure has been constructed. It is important to note that the three sample conditions (sample temperature, gas temperature, and gas humidity) can be adjusted separately by the user. Current studies have shown that the described X-ray heating device is a powerful tool to study dehydration reactions in the frame of fundamental research as well as to understand industrially relevant processes concerning dehydration reactions and their mechanisms.

50-50 atomic percent lead telluride (Altaite), grown by the vapor transport method, was examined with a well aligned Rigaku horizontal beam diffractometer. PbTe is cubic (precise lattice parameter ao = 6.4591(5)Å) with an space group and a calculated density of 8.253 g/cm3. Fully indexed powder diffraction data are presented.

We conducted in-situ high-temperature neutron and X-ray diffraction studies on tetragonal PbTiO3. Using a combination of Rietveld analysis and Maximum Entropy Method, the nuclear and charge density distributions were determined as a function of temperature up to 460 °C. The ionic states obtained from charge density distributions reveal that the covalency of Pb–O2 bonds gradually weakens with increasing temperature. The spontaneous polarizations calculated from the contributions of ionic state, ionic displacement, and nuclear polarization, are in good agreement with the experimental measurements. This method provides an effective approach to determine spontaneous polarizations in multiferroics with high-current leakage and low resistance.

Quantitative phase analysis (QPA) using neutron powder diffraction more often than not involves non-ambient studies where no sample preparation is possible. The larger samples and penetration of neutrons versus X-rays makes neutron diffraction less susceptible to inhomogeneity and large grain sizes, but most well-characterized QPA standard samples do not have these characteristics. Sample #4 from the International Union of Crystallography Commission on Powder Diffraction QPA round robin was one such sample. Data were collected using the POWGEN time-of-flight (TOF) neutron powder diffractometer and analysed together with historical data from the C2 diffractometer at Chalk River. The presence of magnetic reflections from Fe3O4 (magnetite) in the sample was an additional consideration, and given the frequency at which iron-containing and other magnetic compounds are present during in-operando studies their possible impact on the accuracy of QPA is of interest. Additionally, scattering from thermal diffuse scattering in the high-Q region (<0.6 Å) accessible with TOF data could impact QPA results during least-squares because of the extreme peak overlaps present in this region. Refinement of POWGEN data was largely insensitive to the modification of longer d-spacing reflections by magnetic contributions, but the constant-wavelength data were adversely impacted if the magnetic structure was not included. A robust refinement weighting was found to be effective in reducing quantification errors using the constant-wavelength neutron data both where intensities from magnetic reflections were ignored and included. Results from the TOF data were very sensitive to inadequate modelling of the high-Q (low d-spacing) background using simple polynomials.

This paper is devoted to the X-ray diffraction study of bone fragments of Permian parareptile Deltavjatia vjatkensis obtained from the Kotelnich vertebrate fossil site, one of the richest of the Permian period, which is characterized by the excellent preservation of fossil remains because of their burial in a silty anaerobic environment similar to modern bogs. The bone is well-preserved and consists of fluorapatite, calcite, quartz, and dolomite. The refined apatite unit-cell parameters of a and b-axis (9.3526 ± 0.0001 and 9.3587 ± 0.0001) Å and c-axis (6.8930 ± 0.0001 and 6.8968 ± 0.0001) Å correspond to F-apatite. Crystallinity index determined as the full width at half maximum of the 002 reflection in degrees 2θ is 0.266–0.250, which is typical for Mesozoic vertebrate bones. Apatite crystallite size (length 70.3–74.9 nm, width 30.7–30.3 nm) in fossil pareiasaur bone is larger than in subfossil and recent mammal bone and is in a good agreement with the values for seismosaurus bone. Both crystallite size and aspect ratio (2.3–2.5) are independent of the fossil pareiasaur bone length.

The kieserite-type solid-solution series of synthetic (Cu,Mg)SO4·H2O was investigated by TG-analysis and X-ray powder diffraction using the Rietveld method. Representatives with Cu≥20 mol% are triclinic distorted () analogous to the poitevinite (Cu,Fe)SO4·H2O compounds. Cation site ordering with preference of Cu for the more distorted M1 site was additionally proven by the structure refinement.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) certifies a suite of Standard Reference Materials (SRMs) to address specific aspects of the performance of X-ray powder diffraction instruments. This report describes SRM 1976b, the third generation of this powder diffraction SRM. SRM 1976b consists of a sintered alumina disc, approximately 25.6 mm in diameter by 2.2 mm in thickness, intended for use in the calibration of X-ray powder diffraction equipment with respect to line position and intensity as a function of 2θ-angle. The sintered form of the SRM eliminates the effect of sample loading procedures on intensity measurements. Certified data include the lattice parameters and relative peak intensity values from 13 lines in the 2θ region between 20° and 145° using CuKα radiation. A NIST-built diffractometer, incorporating many advanced and unique design features was used to make the certification measurements.

Dioctahedral smectites are clay minerals that widely used as a crucial component for the edifice of natural barriers in industrial wastes and wastewater treatment. The hydration behaviours of these mineral types are very sensitive by environmental surroundings changes. The present work focuses the evolution of the interlayer water amount as a function of the relative humidity rates (RH), varied along a humidifying-drying cycle, in the case of two dioctahedral smectites with different charge location (i.e. Wyoming montmorillonite SWy-2 and Beidellite SbId-1). The CEC (i.e. cation exchange capacity) of the studied sample is saturated by two monovalent cations (i.e., Cs+ and Na+) characterized by a different ionic radius. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) profile modelling tools based on the indirect method that consist on the comparison of experimental 00l reflections with other calculated from structural models is used to perform these aims. The qualitative XRD profile investigation suggests heterogeneous hydration behaviour at different stage of the cycle for all studied samples. The water content fluctuation, confirmed by the appearance of a hydration hysteresis, within the interlamellar space of diverse complexes is an irreversible process during the shrinking–rewetting sequence. Comparing to Na+ cations, the presence of the Cs+ ions in exchangeable sites of both smectite structures is accompanied by more orderliness of systems, which retunes the lowest water molecules amount over the applied cycle.

The salt [NH3(CH2)2SS(CH2)2NH3][CuCl4] was obtained by crystallization after adding CuCl2 to cystamine (Cysta), solved in hydrochloric acid. The assumption of conserved disulfide connection (S–S) in the compound, made on the basis of infrared spectroscopy, is further supported by the crystal structure determined from X-ray powder diffraction data. The compound has an ionic structure. [CuCl4]2− and CystaH22+ ions package in the form of inorganic and organic layers in the cell, interconnected through the formation of hydrogen bonds via NH3-groups and chlorine atoms of the complex [CuCl4]2−. Inorganic layers are additionally stabilized in the parquet package of [CuCl4]2− ions which provides a Cu-distorted octahedral coordination. CystaH2[CuCl4] is stable in air up to 200 °C. Thermal decomposition occurs in several stages, accompanied by breaking of S–S bonds, releasing of the organic component and yielding CuO.

We report here the fabrication and characterization of ultra-long AlN whiskers by physical vapor transport method. The obtained whiskers are 1–3 µm in diameter and up to millimeters in length. The whiskers grow along the [0001] crystallographic direction and are well crystallized. They exhibit a strong ultraviolet emission at 345 nm, the shortest wavelength reported in AlN whiskers or nanowires. Our results indicate that these large scales of AlN whiskers are less contaminated by oxygen and other impurities compared with the previously reported ones, which may find wide applications in fabricating ultraviolet optoelectronic devices.

Sterilization of soils and sediments can release them from quarantine restrictions. Gamma irradiation is effective at sterilization but can damage materials and in so doing affect their suitability for environmental research. Duplicate samples of a wide range of mineral soils and sediments were subject to an acetic acid extraction before and after 50 kGy gamma irradiation. This amount of gamma irradiation did not affect the leachability of a range of analytes from the soils and sediments.
