In this paper we prove that the states of a unital Banach algebra generate the dual Banach space as a linear space (Theorem 2). This is a result of R. T. Moore (4, Theorem 1(a)) who uses a decomposition of measures in his proof. In the proof given here the measure theory is replaced by a Hahn-Banach separation argument. We shall let A denote a unital Banach algebra over the complex field, and D(1) denote {f ∈ A′: ‖f‖ = f(1) = 1} where A′ is the dual of A. The motivation of Moore's results is the theorem that in a C*-algebra every continuous linear functional is a linear combination of four states (the states are the elements of D(1)) (see (2, 2.6.4, 2.1.9, 1.1.10)).

This paper deals with the existence of positive radial solutions for the quasilinear system $\text{div}(|\nabla u_i|^{p-2}\nabla u_i)+\lambda f^i(u_1,\dots,u_n)=0$, $|x|\lt1$, $u_i(x)=0$, on $|x|=1$, $i=1,\dots,n$, $p\gt1$, $\lambda>0$, $x\in\mathbb{R}^N$. The $f^i$, $i=1,\dots,n$, are continuous and non-negative functions. Let $\bm{u}=(u_1,\dots,u_n)$, $\|\bm{u}\|=\sum_{i=1}^n|u_i|$,

$i=1,\dots,n$, $\bm{f}=(f^1,\dots,f^n)$, $\bm{f}_0=\sum_{i=1}^nf_0^i$. We prove that the problem has a positive solution for sufficiently small $\lambda>0$ if $\bm{f}_0=\infty$. Our methods employ a fixed-point theorem in a cone.

Let be a finite category and let k be a field. We consider the category algebra and show that -mod is closed symmetric monoidal. Through comparing with a co-commutative bialgebra, we exhibit the similarities and differences between them in terms of homological properties. In particular, we give a module-theoretic approach to the multiplicative structure of the cohomology rings of small categories. As an application, we prove that the Hochschild cohomology rings of a certain type of finite category algebras are finitely generated.

Let Fq be the finite field of q elements. Let f(x) be a polynomial of degree d over Fq and let r be the least non-negative residue of q-1 modulo d. Under a mild assumption, we show that there are at most r values of c∈Fq, such that f(x) + cx is a permutation polynomial over Fq. This indicates that the number of permutation polynomials of the form f(x) +cx depends on the residue class of q–1 modulo d.

As an application we apply our results to the construction of various maximal sets of mutually orthogonal latin squares. In particular for odd q = pn if τ(n) denotes the number of positive divisors of n, we show how to construct τ(n) nonisomorphic complete sets of orthogonal squares of order q, and hence τ(n) nonisomorphic projective planes of order q. We also provide a construction for translation planes of order q without the use of a right quasifield.

We present a construction ‘à la Chevalley’ of connected affine supergroups associated with Lie superalgebras of type D(2, 1; a), for any possible value of the parameter a. This extends the results by Fioresi and Gavarini, in which all other simple Lie superalgebras of classical type were considered. The case of simple Lie superalgebras of Cartan type is dealt with in a previous paper by the author, so this work completes the programme of constructing connected affine supergroups associated with any simple Lie superalgebra.

The earliest author to whom the discovery of the nine-pointcircle has been attributed is Euler, but no one has ever given a reference to any passage in Euler's writings where the characteristic property of this circle is either stated or implied. The attribution to Euler is simply a mistake, and the origin of the mistake may, I think, be explained. It is worth while doing this, in order that subsequent investigators may be spared the labour and chagrin of a fruitless search through Euler's numerous writings.

An A1−A∞ estimate, improving on a previous result for [b, TΩ] with $\Omega \in L^{infty}({\open S}^{n - 1})$ and b∈BMO is obtained. A new result in terms of the A∞ constant and the one supremum Aq−A∞exp constant is also proved, providing a counterpart for commutators of the result obtained by Li. Both of the preceding results rely upon a sparse domination result in terms of bilinear forms, which is established using techniques from Lerner.

We define a Grothendieck ring of varieties with actions of finite groups and show that the orbifold Euler characteristic and the Euler characteristics of higher orders can be defined as homomorphisms from this ring to the ring of integers. We describe two natural λ-structures on the ring and the corresponding power structures over it and show that one of these power structures is effective. We define a Grothendieck ring of varieties with equivariant vector bundles and show that the generalized (‘motivic’) Euler characteristics of higher orders can be defined as homomorphisms from this ring to the Grothendieck ring of varieties extended by powers of the class of the complex affine line. We give an analogue of the Macdonald type formula for the generating series of the generalized higher-order Euler characteristics of wreath products.

Let X be a topological space, E a real or complex topological vector space, and C(X, E) the vector space of all bounded continuous E-valued functions on X; when E is the real or complex field this space will be denoted by C(X). The notion of the strict topology on C(X, E) was first introduced by Buck (1) in 1958 in the case of X locally compact and E a locally convex space. In recent years a large number of papers have appeared in the literature concerned with extending the results contained in Buck's paper. In particular, a number of these have considered the problem of characterising the strictly continuous linear functional on C(X, E); see, for example, (2), (3), (4) and (8). In this paper we suppose that X is a completely regular Hausdorff space and that E is a Hausdorff topological vector space with a non-trivial dual E′. The main result established is Theorem 3.2, where we prove a representation theorem for the strictly continuous linear functionals on the subspace Ctb(X, E) which consists of those functions f in C(X, E) such that f(X) is totally bounded.

This paper revisits the concept of rough paths of inhomogeneous degree of smoothness (geometric Π-rough paths in our terminology) sketched by Lyons in 1998. Although geometric Π-rough paths can be treated as p-rough paths for a sufficiently large p, and the theory of integration of Lipγ one-forms (γ > p–1) along geometric p-rough paths applies, we prove the existence of integrals of one-forms under weaker conditions. Moreover, we consider differential equations driven by geometric Π-rough paths and give sufficient conditions for existence and uniqueness of solution.

In previous work by Coates, Galkin and the authors, the notion of mutation between lattice polytopes was introduced. Such mutations give rise to a deformation between the corresponding toric varieties. In this paper we study one-step mutations that correspond to deformations between weighted projective planes, giving a complete characterization of such mutations in terms of T-singularities. We also show that the weights involved satisfy Diophantine equations, generalizing results of Hacking and Prokhorov.

We study when certain properties of Banach algebras are stable under ultrapower constructions. In particular, we consider when every ultrapower of is Arens regular, and give some evidence that this is so if and only if is isomorphic to a closed subalgebra of operators on a super-reflexive Banach space. We show that such ideas are closely related to whether one can sensibly define an ultrapower of a dual Banach algebraffi We study how tensor products of ultrapowers behave, and apply this to study the question of when every ultrapower of is amenable. We provide an abstract characterization in terms of something like an approximate diagonal, and consider when every ultrapower of a C*-algebra, or a group L1-convolution algebra, is amenable.

For the third-order differential equation y′″ = ƒ(t, y, y′, y″), where , questions involving ‘uniqueness implies uniqueness’, ‘uniqueness implies existence’ and ‘optimal length subintervals of (a, b) on which solutions are unique’ are studied for a class of two-point boundary-value problems.

In this paper we study the existence and multiplicity of positive radial solutions for a class of semilinear elliptic systems in bounded annular domains with non-homogeneous boundary conditions by the use of a fixed-point theorem of cone expansion/compression type.

In this paper, the author continues his investigation, initiated in (4) and (5), into the nature of certain “arithmetical” functions associated with the factorisation of normalised non-zero polynomials in the ring GF[q, X1, …, Xk], where k ≧ 1, GF(q) is the finite field of order q and X1, …, Xk are indeterminates. By normalised polynomials we mean that exactly one polynomial has been selected from equivalence classes with respect to multiplication by non-zero elements of GF(q). With this normalisation GF[q, X1, …, Xk] becomes a unique factorisation domain. The constant polynomial will be denoted by 1. By the degree of a polynomial A in GF[q, X1, …, Xk], we shall mean the ordered set (m1, …, mk), where mi is the degree of A in Xi, 1 ≦ i ≦.k. We shall assume that A(≠ 1), a typical polynomial in GF[q, X1, … Xk], has prime factorisation

where P1, …, Pr are distinct irreducible polynomials (i.e. primes).

A congruence ρ on a semigroup is said to be idempotent-separating if each ρ-class contains at most one idempotent. For any idempotent e of a semigroup S the set eSe is a subsemigroup of S with identity e and group of units He, the maximal subgroup of S containing e. The purpose of the present note is to show that if S is a regular O-bisimple semigroup and e is a non-zero idempotent of 5 then there is a one-to-one correspondence between the idempotentseparating congruences on 5 and the subgroups N of He with the property that aN ⊆ Na for all right units a of eSe and Nb ⊆ bN for all left units b of eSe. Some special cases of this result are discussed and, in the final section, an application is made to the principal factors of the full transformation semigroup on a set X.

The Nottingham group can be described as the group of normalized automorphisms of the ring Fp[[t]], namely, those automorphisms acting trivially on tFp[[t]]/t2Fp[[t]]. In this paper we consider certain proper subgroups of the Nottingham group. We prove that these subgroups are identical to their normalizers and that some of them are isomorphic to the Nottingham group.

Let V be a left vector space over the arbitrary division ring D and G a locally nilpotent group of finitary automorphisms of V (automorphisms g of V such that dimDV(g-1)<∞) such that V is irreducible as D-G bimodule. If V is infinite dimensional we show that such groups are very rare, much rarer than in the finite-dimensional case. For example we show that if dimDV is infinite then dimDV = |G| = ℵ0 and G is a locally finite q-group for some prime q ≠ char D. Moreover G is isomorphic to a finitary linear group over a field. Examples show that infinite-dimensional such groups G do exist. Note also that there exist examples of finite-dimensional such groups G that are not isomorphic to any finitary linear group over a field. Generally the finite-dimensional examples are more varied.

Simple characterizations of a pseudosphere or a plane in Minkowski 3-space by the existence of pseudocircles are given.

The problem which we discuss in this paper can be easily settled for a closed plane set; after a brief introduction giving the definitions and theorems used later we indicate how this may be done; we then proceed to the main problem.
