Let R be a ring. An element p of R is a prime element if pR = Rp is a prime ideal of R. A prime ring R is said to be a Unique Factorisation Ring if every non-zero prime ideal contains a prime element. This paper develops the basic theory of U.F.R.s. We show that every polynomial extension in central indeterminates of a U.F.R. is a U.F.R. We consider in more detail the case when a U.F.R. is either Noetherian or satisfies a polynomial identity. In particular we show that such a ring R is a maximal order, that every height-1 prime ideal of R has a classical localisation in which every two-sided ideal is principal, and that R is the intersection of a left and right Noetherian ring and a simple ring.

Clay (3), Johnson (5) and Krimmel (6) have each considered the near-rings with identity on dihedral groups. Krimmel actually generalised the class of dihedral groups and investigated the class of finite non-abelian groups with a cyclic normal subgroup of prime index: we shall call this class . Krimmel considered the near-rings with identity that might be denned on members of and he determined the subclass of groups in which support near-rings of this kind. He also managed to calculate the number of non-isomorphic near-rings involved for certain cases. His methods were essentially combinatorial, and his results were expressed in terms of various integers which characterised the individual members of . Certain features of this work led us to investigate the structure of near-rings on members of from a more algebraic point of view and thereby to complete and extend Krimmel's programme. Part of the work in this paper formed the basis of the second author's thesis (7). We should like to thank Dr. J. Krimmel for permission to include some of his results, and Dr. J. Meldrum who detected an error in our original formulation of Theorem 7.1.

This paper deals with Schauder decompositions of Banach spaces X2π of 2π-periodic functions by projection operators Pk onto the subspaces Vk, k = 0,1,…, which form a multiresolution of X2π,. The results unify the study of wavelet decompositions by orthogonal projections in the Hilbert space on one hand and by interpolatory projections in the Banach space C2π on the other. The approach, using “orthogonal splines”, is constructive and leads to the construction of a Schauder decomposition of X2π and a biorthogonal system for X2π, and its dual X2π. Decomposition and reconstruction algorithms are derived from the construction.

Milutin's Theorem states that if X and Y are uncountable metrizable compact Hausdorff spaces, then C(X) and C(Y) are isomorphic as Banach spaces [15, p. 379]. Thus there is only one isomorphism class of such Banach spaces. There is also an extensive theory of the Banach–Mazur distance between various classes of classical Banach spaces with the deepest results depending on probabilistic and asymptotic estimates [18]. Lindenstrauss, Haagerup and possibly others know that as Banach spaces

where H is the infinite dimensional separable Hilbert space, R is the injective II 1-factor on H, and ≈ denotes Banach space isomorphism. Haagerup informed us of this result, and suggested considering completely bounded isomorphisms; it is a pleasure to acknowledge his suggestion. We replace Banach space isomorphisms by completely bounded isomorphisms that preserve the linear structure and involution, but not the product. One of the two theorems of this paper is a strengthened version of the above result: if N is an injective von Neumann algebra with separable predual and not finite type I of bounded degree, then N is completely boundedly isomorphic to B(H). The methods used are similar to those in Banach space theory with complete boundedness needing a little care at various points in the argument. Extensive use is made of the conditional expectation available for injective algebras, and the methods do not apply to the interesting problems of completely bounded isomorphisms of non-injective von Neumann algebras (see [4] for a study of the completely bounded approximation property).

Einstein has recently adopted a new set of field-equations in his Unified Field-Theory of Gravitation and Electricity, the so-called theory of parallelism at a distance or Teleparallelism, and has given a solution of these equations with spherical symmetry, corresponding to the field of a charged mass-particle. In the present paper we discuss the solution of these equations with axial symmetry, which corresponds to a statical field whose field-variables depend on a single coordinate only, viz. the coordinate which is measured along the axis of symmetry.

In a recent paper Professor A. C. Aitken directed attention to a little known type of inverse factorial series, which he calls inverse central factorial series. He showed that this type of series is a very powerful means of asymptotic representation of functions of a certain type, and concluded his note with the-remark that there is here scope for considerable investigation. As a modest contribution to this investigation, the asymptotic theory, foreshadowed in the last paragraph of Aitken's paper, will be given here: it is hoped to give the convergence theory of inverse central factorial series later.

We consider Akbarov's holomorphic version of the non-commutative Pontryagin duality for a complex Lie group. We prove, under the assumption that $G$ is a Stein group with finitely many components, that (1) the topological Hopf algebra of holomorphic functions on $G$ is holomorphically reflexive if and only if $G$ is linear; (2) the dual cocommutative topological Hopf algebra of exponential analytic functional on $G$ is holomorphically reflexive. We give a counterexample, which shows that the first criterion cannot be extended to the case of infinitely many components. Nevertheless, we conjecture that, in general, the question can be solved in terms of the Banach-algebra linearity of $G$.

This paper establishes the mapping properties of pseudo-differential operators and the Fourier integral operators on the weighted Morrey spaces with variable exponents and the weighted Triebel–Lizorkin–Morrey spaces with variable exponents. We obtain these results by extending the extrapolation theory to the weighted Morrey spaces with variable exponents. This extension also gives the mapping properties of Calderón–Zygmund operators on the weighted Hardy–Morrey spaces with variable exponents and the wavelet characterizations of the weighted Hardy–Morrey spaces with variable exponents.

Let $X$ be a Banach space and let $Y$ be a closed subspace of a Banach space $Z$. The following theorem is proved. Assume that $X^*$ or $Z^*$ has the approximation property. If there exists a bounded linear extension operator from $Y^*$ to $Z^*$, then any bounded linear operator $T:X\rightarrow Y$ is nuclear whenever $T$ is nuclear from $X$ to $Z$. The particular case of the theorem with $Z=Y^{**}$ is due to Grothendieck and Oja and Reinov. Numerous applications are presented. For instance, it is shown that a bounded linear operator $T$ from an arbitrary Banach space $X$ to an $\mathcal{L}_\infty$-space $Y$ is nuclear whenever $T$ is nuclear from $X$ to some Banach space $Z$ containing $Y$ as a subspace.

Mathieu's differential equation

is the equation which arises out of those two-dimensional problems Mathematical Physics in which the boundary is an ellipse, such problems, for example, as the vibrations of an elliptic membrane, which was first discussed by Mathieu,* and the scattering electromagnetic waves by a wire of elliptic cross-section. A different use of the same equation is found in Celestial Mechanics the treatment of perturbations and oscillations about periodic orbits, and, in a more mundane connection, it has been shown to be the differential equation of the variety artiste who holds an assistant poised on a pole above his head while he himself is standing on a spherical ball rolling on the ground!

The sampling theorem, often referred to as the Shannon or Whittaker-Kotel'nikov- Shannon sampling theorem, is of considerable importance in many fields, including communication engineering, electronics, control theory and data processing, and has appeared frequently in various forms in engineering literature (a comprehensive account of its numerous extensions and applications is given in [3]). We construct a non-exposed extreme function f of the unit ball of H1, the classical Hardy space on the unit disc of the plane, which has the property: f(z)/(1−q(z))2 ∉ H1 for any nonconstant inner function q(z). This function constitutes a counterexample to a conjecture in D. Sarason [7].

This paper continue to study the interrelation and hierarchy of the spaces of operator-Lipschitz functions and the spaces of functions closed to them: commutator bounded and operator stable. It also examines various properties of symmetrically normed ideals, introduces new classes of ideals: regular and Fuglede, and investigates them.

In this paper we use the norm of bounded variation to study multilinear operators and polynomials on Banach lattices. As a result, we obtain when all continuous multilinear operators and polynomials on Banach lattices are regular. We also provide new abstract M- and abstract L-spaces of multilinear operators and polynomials and generalize all the results by Grecu and Ryan, from Banach lattices with an unconditional basis to all Banach lattices.

The classification of the normal subgroups of the infinite general linear group GL(Ω, R) has received much attention and has been studied in, for example, (6), (4) and (2). The main theorem of (6) gives a complete classification of the normal subgroups of GL(Ω, R) when R is a division ring, while the results of (2) require that R satisfies certain finiteness conditions. The object of this paper is to produce a classification, along the lines of that given by Wilson in (7) or by Bass in (3) in the finite dimensional case, that does not require any finiteness assumptions. However, when R is Noetherian, the classification given here reduces to that given in (2).
