We provide an easy method for the construction of characteristic polynomials of simple ordinary abelian varieties ${{\mathcal A}}$ of dimension g over a finite field ${{\mathbb F}}_q$ , when $q\ge 4$ and $2g=\rho ^{b-1}(\rho -1)$ , for some prime $\rho \ge 5$ with $b\ge 1$ . Moreover, we show that ${{\mathcal A}}$ is absolutely simple if $b=1$ and g is prime, but ${{\mathcal A}}$ is not absolutely simple for any prime $\rho \ge 5$ with $b>1$ .

For $R(z, w)\in \mathbb {C}(z, w)$ of degree at least 2 in w, we show that the number of rational functions $f(z)\in \mathbb {C}(z)$ solving the difference equation $f(z+1)=R(z, f(z))$ is finite and bounded just in terms of the degrees of R in the two variables. This complements a result of Yanagihara, who showed that any finite-order meromorphic solution to this sort of difference equation must be a rational function. We prove a similar result for the differential equation $f'(z)=R(z, f(z))$ , building on a result of Eremenko.

A key ingredient in the Taylor–Wiles proof of Fermat’s last theorem is the classical Ihara lemma, which is used to raise the modularity property between some congruent Galois representations. In their work on Sato and Tate, Clozel, Harris and Taylor proposed a generalisation of the Ihara lemma in higher dimension for some similitude groups. The main aim of this paper is to prove some new instances of this generalised Ihara lemma by considering some particular non-pseudo-Eisenstein maximal ideals of unramified Hecke algebras. As a consequence, we prove a level-raising statement.

We investigate qualitative properties of the underlying scheme of Rapoport–Zink formal moduli spaces of p-divisible groups (resp., shtukas). We single out those cases where the dimension of this underlying scheme is zero (resp., those where the dimension is the maximal possible). The model case for the first alternative is the Lubin–Tate moduli space, and the model case for the second alternative is the Drinfeld moduli space. We exhibit a complete list in both cases.

We study the l-adic cohomology of unramified Rapoport–Zink spaces of EL-type. These spaces were used in Harris and Taylor’s proof of the local Langlands correspondence for $\mathrm {GL_n}$ and to show local–global compatibilities of the Langlands correspondence. In this paper we consider certain morphisms $\mathrm {Mant}_{b, \mu }$ of Grothendieck groups of representations constructed from the cohomology of these spaces, as studied by Harris and Taylor, Mantovan, Fargues, Shin and others. Due to earlier work of Fargues and Shin we have a description of $\mathrm {Mant}_{b, \mu }(\rho )$ for $\rho $ a supercuspidal representation. In this paper, we give a conjectural formula for $\mathrm {Mant}_{b, \mu }(\rho )$ for $\rho $ an admissible representation and prove it when $\rho $ is essentially square-integrable. Our proof works for general $\rho $ conditionally on a conjecture appearing in Shin’s work. We show that our description agrees with a conjecture of Harris in the case of parabolic inductions of supercuspidal representations of a Levi subgroup.

Let $\mathcal {A} \rightarrow S$ be an abelian scheme over an irreducible variety over $\mathbb {C}$ of relative dimension $g$. For any simply-connected subset $\Delta$ of $S^{\mathrm {an}}$ one can define the Betti map from $\mathcal {A}_{\Delta }$ to $\mathbb {T}^{2g}$, the real torus of dimension $2g$, by identifying each closed fiber of $\mathcal {A}_{\Delta } \rightarrow \Delta$ with $\mathbb {T}^{2g}$ via the Betti homology. Computing the generic rank of the Betti map restricted to a subvariety $X$ of $\mathcal {A}$ is useful to study Diophantine problems, e.g. proving the geometric Bogomolov conjecture over char $0$ and studying the relative Manin–Mumford conjecture. In this paper we give a geometric criterion to detect this rank. As an application we show that it is maximal after taking a large fibered power (if $X$ satisfies some conditions); it is an important step to prove the bound for the number of rational points on curves (Dimitrov et al., Uniformity in Mordell–Lang for Curves, Preprint (2020), arXiv:2001.10276). Another application is to answer a question of André, Corvaja and Zannier and improve a result of Voisin. We also systematically study its link with the relative Manin–Mumford conjecture, reducing the latter to a simpler conjecture. Our tools are functional transcendence and unlikely intersections for mixed Shimura varieties.

In this article we establish the arithmetic purity of strong approximation for certain semisimple simply connected linear algebraic groups and their homogeneous spaces over a number field $k$. For instance, for any such group $G$ and for any open subset $U$ of $G$ with ${\mathrm {codim}}(G\setminus U, G)\geqslant 2$, we prove that (i) if $G$ is $k$-simple and $k$-isotropic, then $U$ satisfies strong approximation off any finite number of places; and (ii) if $G$ is the spin group of a non-degenerate quadratic form which is not compact over archimedean places, then $U$ satisfies strong approximation off all archimedean places. As a consequence, we prove that the same property holds for affine quadratic hypersurfaces. Our approach combines a fibration method with subgroup actions developed for induction on the codimension of $G\setminus U$, and an affine linear sieve which allows us to produce integral points with almost-prime polynomial values.

Let K be an algebraic number field. We investigate the K-rational distance problem and prove that there are infinitely many nonisomorphic cubic number fields and a number field of degree n for every $n\geq 2$ in which there is a point in the plane of a unit square at K-rational distances from the four vertices of the square.

Let $K/F$ be an unramified quadratic extension of a non-Archimedean local field. In a previous work [1], we proved a formula for the intersection number on Lubin–Tate spaces. The main result of this article is an algorithm for computation of this formula in certain special cases. As an application, we prove the linear Arithmetic Fundamental Lemma for $ \operatorname {{\mathrm {GL}}}_4$ with the unit element in the spherical Hecke Algebra.

We consider the Newton stratification on Iwahori-double cosets in the loop group of a reductive group. We describe a group-theoretic condition on the generic Newton point, called cordiality, under which the Newton poset (that is, the index set for non-empty Newton strata) is saturated and Grothendieck’s conjecture on closures of the Newton strata holds. Finally, we give several large classes of Iwahori-double cosets for which this condition is satisfied by studying certain paths in the associated quantum Bruhat graph.

We show that the mod p cohomology of a simple Shimura variety treated in Harris-Taylor’s book vanishes outside a certain nontrivial range after localizing at any non-Eisenstein ideal of the Hecke algebra. In cases of low dimensions, we show the vanishing outside the middle degree under a mild additional assumption.

In this paper we prove the mixed Ax–Schanuel theorem for the universal abelian varieties (more generally any mixed Shimura variety of Kuga type), and give some simple applications. In particular, we present an application for studying the generic rank of the Betti map.

Let A be a two-dimensional abelian variety defined over a number field K. Fix a prime number $\ell $ and suppose $\#A({\mathbf {F}_{\mathfrak {p}}}) \equiv 0 \pmod {\ell ^2}$ for a set of primes ${\mathfrak {p}} \subset {\mathcal {O}_{K}}$ of density 1. When $\ell =2$ Serre has shown that there does not necessarily exist a K-isogenous $A'$ such that $\#A'(K)_{{tor}} \equiv 0 \pmod {4}$ . We extend those results to all odd $\ell $ and classify the abelian varieties that fail this divisibility principle for torsion in terms of the image of the mod- $\ell ^2$ representation.

We provide a direct proof of a Bogomolov-type statement for affine varieties V defined over function fields K of finite transcendence degree over an arbitrary field k, generalising a previous result (obtained through a different approach) of the first author in the special case when K is a function field of transcendence degree $1$ . Furthermore, we obtain sharp lower bounds for the Weil height of the points in $V(\overline {K})$ , which are not contained in the largest subvariety $W\subseteq V$ defined over the constant field $\overline {k}$ .

The notion of $\theta $ -congruent numbers is a generalisation of congruent numbers where one considers triangles with an angle $\theta $ such that $\cos \theta $ is a rational number. In this paper we discuss a criterion for a natural number to be $\theta $ -congruent over certain real number fields.

Let A be the product of an abelian variety and a torus over a number field K, and let $$m \ge 2$$ be a square-free integer. If $\alpha \in A(K)$ is a point of infinite order, we consider the set of primes $\mathfrak p$ of K such that the reduction $(\alpha \bmod \mathfrak p)$ is well defined and has order coprime to m. This set admits a natural density, which we are able to express as a finite sum of products of $\ell$ -adic integrals, where $\ell$ varies in the set of prime divisors of m. We deduce that the density is a rational number, whose denominator is bounded (up to powers of m) in a very strong sense. This extends the results of the paper Reductions of points on algebraic groups by Davide Lombardo and the second author, where the case m prime is established.

Let S be a finite set of primes. We prove that a form of finite Galois descent obstruction is the only obstruction to the existence of $\mathbb {Z}_{S}$ -points on integral models of Hilbert modular varieties, extending a result of D. Helm and F. Voloch about modular curves. Let L be a totally real field. Under (a special case of) the absolute Hodge conjecture and a weak Serre’s conjecture for mod $\ell $ representations of the absolute Galois group of L, we prove that the same holds also for the $\mathcal {O}_{L,S}$ -points.

Let f and g be two cuspidal modular forms and let ${\mathcal {F}}$ be a Coleman family passing through f, defined over an open affinoid subdomain V of weight space $\mathcal {W}$ . Using ideas of Pottharst, under certain hypotheses on f and $g,$ we construct a coherent sheaf over $V \times \mathcal {W}$ that interpolates the Bloch–Kato Selmer group of the Rankin–Selberg convolution of two modular forms in the critical range (i.e, the range where the p-adic L-function $L_p$ interpolates critical values of the global L-function). We show that the support of this sheaf is contained in the vanishing locus of $L_p$ .

We formulate a general question regarding the size of the iterated Galois groups associated with an algebraic dynamical system and then we discuss some special cases of our question. Our main result answers this question for certain split polynomial maps whose coordinates are unicritical polynomials.

We prove a 1966 conjecture of Tate concerning the Artin–Tate pairing on the Brauer group of a surface over a finite field, which is the analog of the Cassels–Tate pairing. Tate asked if this pairing is always alternating and we find an affirmative answer, which is somewhat surprising in view of the work of Poonen–Stoll on the Cassels–Tate pairing. Our method is based on studying a connection between the Artin–Tate pairing and (generalizations of) Steenrod operations in étale cohomology. Inspired by an analogy to the algebraic topology of manifolds, we develop tools allowing us to calculate the relevant étale Steenrod operations in terms of characteristic classes.
