In a real Hilbert space $H$, we study the bifurcation points of equations of the form $F(\lambda,u)=0$, where $F:\mathbb{R}\times H\rightarrow H$ is a function with $F(\lambda,0)=0$ that is Hadamard differentiable, but not necessarily Fréchet differentiable, with respect to $u$ at $u=0$. In this context, there may be bifurcation at points $\lambda$ where $D_{u} F(\lambda,0):H\rightarrow H$ is an isomorphism. We formulate some additional conditions on $F$ that ensure that bifurcation does not occur at a point where $D_{u}F(\lambda,0):H\rightarrow H$ is an isomorphism. Then, in the case where $F(\lambda,\cdot)$ is a gradient, we give conditions that imply that bifurcation occurs at a point $\lambda$. These conditions may be satisfied at points where $D_{u}F(\lambda,0):H\rightarrow H$ is an isomorphism. We demonstrate the use of these abstract results in the context of nonlinear elliptic equations of the form

and

$$ -\Delta u(x)+q(x)u(x)-\eta(x)^{-1}f(\eta(x)u(x))=\lambda u(x), $$

where $u\in H^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{N})$.

We study the nonlinear stability of discontinuous steady states of a model initial-boundary value problem in one space dimension for incompressible, isothermal shear flow of a non-Newtonian fluid driven by a constant pressure gradient. The non-Newtonian contribution to the shear stress is assumed to satisfy a simple differential constitutive law. The key feature is a non-monotone relation between the total steady shear stress and shear strain-rate that results in steady states having, in general, discontinuities in the strain rate. We show that every solution tends to a steady state as t → ∞, and we identify steady states that are stable.

In the Hilbert space framework, we give some results concerning the behaviour when t goes to infinity for solutions of equations of the form:

A is assumed to be a maximal monotone operator and F(t) is a periodic function.

When F = 0, under a compactness assumption for trajectories of (1), we give the complete description of the asymptotic behaviour, e.g. every trajectory is asymptotic to an almost-periodic solution of (1). When F ≠ cst, the compactness hypothesis being too restrictive, we concentrate our efforts on the case of the equation:

with Dirichlet boundary condition) and get weak convergence to particular solutions of the equation when β is either univalued or strictly monotone. The methods used in these cases seem of general interest for hyperbolic equations of dissipative type with periodic forcing term.

The following paper is ancillary to certain investigations in stellar photometry which are in progress at the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh, and require the establishment of data relating to the blackening of the plates employed. It describes the laboratory work carried out for this purpose, generally over the very restricted range of exposure times and densities used in the stellar work, but occasionally extended to cover a wider field. The conditions are chosen in order to give the maximum accuracy and range to the stellar work and not with a view to highly accurate laboratory work; on the other hand, the periodical change of emulsion which must occur in any lengthy investigation introduces an element which, though of considerable interest, is lacking in most of the published work on the subject.

In this paper we study the existence, non-existence and simplicity of the first eigenvalue of the perturbed Hardy-Sobolev operator under various assumptions on the perturbation q. We study the asymptotic behaviour of the first eigenfunction near the origin when the perturbation q is q = s, 0 < s < 1. We will also establish the best constant in a Hardy-Sobolev inequality proved by Adimurthi et al.

In this study, we investigate the intial value problem (IVP) for a time-fractional fourth-order equation with nonlinear source terms. More specifically, we consider the time-fractional biharmonic with exponential nonlinearity and the time-fractional Cahn–Hilliard equation. By using the Fourier transform concept, the generalized formula for the mild solution as well as the smoothing effects of resolvent operators are proved. For the IVP associated with the first one, by using the Orlicz space with the function $\Xi (z)={\textrm {e}}^{|z|^{p}}-1$ and some embeddings between it and the usual Lebesgue spaces, we prove that the solution is a global-in-time solution or it shall blow up in a finite time if the initial value is regular. In the case of singular initial data, the local-in-time/global-in-time existence and uniqueness are derived. Also, the regularity of the mild solution is investigated. For the IVP associated with the second one, some modifications to the generalized formula are made to deal with the nonlinear term. We also establish some important estimates for the derivatives of resolvent operators, they are the basis for using the Picard sequence to prove the local-in-time existence of the solution.

Let Mn be the semigroup, under composition, of endomorphisms of an n-dimensional vector space. Let E be the set of idempotents of Mn. It has been shown that each singular element of Mn() may be expressed as a composition of elements of E. In this paper the minimum number of idempotents needed in this composition is determined. This is given in terms of n and one parameter dependent on the element. Further, it is shown that En–1⊂<E>, while En=<E>.

Consider the Cauchy problem for a one-dimensional compressible flow through porous media, Hsiao and Liu showed that the solution (υ, u) behaves as the diffusion wave (ῡ, ū), i.e. the solution of the porous-media equation due to the Darcy law. The optimal convergence rates have been obtained by Nishihara and co-workers. When υ0(x) has the same constant state at x = ±∞, the convergence rate ‖(υ − ῡ)(·,t)‖L∞ = O(t−1) obtained is ‘optimal’, since ‖ῡ(·,t)‖∞ = O(t−1/2). However, this ‘optimal’ convergence rate is less sufficient to determine the location of the diffusion wave. Our aim in this paper is to obtain the ‘truly optimal’ convergence rate by choosing suitably located diffusion waves.

The long-time behaviour of solutions to a semilinear damped wave equation in a three-dimensional bounded domain with the nonlinearity rapidly oscillating in time (f = f(ε, u, t/ε)) is studied. It is proved that (under natural assumptions) the behaviour of solutions whose initial energy is not very large can be described in terms of global (uniform) attractors Aε of the corresponding dynamical processes and that, as ε → 0, these attractors tend to the global attractor A0 of the corresponding averaged system. We also give the detailed description of these attractors in the case where the limit attractor A0 is regular.

Moreover, we give explicit examples of semilinear hyperbolic equations where the uniform attractor Âε (for the initial data belonging to the whole energy phase space) contains the irregular resonant part, which tends to infinity as ε → 0, and formulate the additional restrictions on the nonlinearity f which guarantee that this part is absent.

For any n, m ∈ N, we prove the existence of 2mπ-periodic solutions, with n bouncings in each period, for a second-order forced equation with attractive singularity by using the approach of successor map and Poincaré-Birkhoff twist theorem.

This paper is concerned with the dynamics of a non-local delayed reaction–diffusion equation without quasi-monotonicity on an infinite n-dimensional domain, which can be derived from the growth of a stage-structured single-species population. We first prove that solutions of the Cauchy-type problem are positively preserving and bounded if the initial value is non-negative and bounded. Then, by establishing a comparison theorem and a series of comparison arguments, we prove the global attractivity of the positive equilibrium. When there exist no positive equilibria, we prove that the zero equilibrium is globally attractive. In particular, these results are still valid for the non-local delayed reaction–diffusion equation on a bounded domain with the Neumann boundary condition. Finally, we establish the existence of new entire solutions by using the travelling-wave solutions of two auxiliary equations and the global attractivity of the positive equilibrium.

It is shown that the new model is thermodynamically admissible and allows for a unique, global-in-time solution of the corresponding rate-independent initial–boundary-value problem. The method of choice is the Yosida approximation and a passage to the limit.

The paper deals with boundary value problems for second-order vector differential equations x″ = f (t, x, x′). Given a region Ω in (t, x)-space we ask whether there exists a solution x(t) of the problem satisfying (t, x(t)) ∊Ω. We arrive at a rather general type of conditions which are sufficient in order that Ω has the desired property. One of these conditions is geometric in nature and depends upon the boundary data only. The second condition can be expressed in terms of inequalities and depends upon the values of f on ∂Ω. These inequalities turn out to be the common background of a variety of conditions which can be found in the literature on boundary value problems and which in the case of a scalar equation reduce to the well-known properties of upper and lower solutions.

The main result of this work is a new extension of the well-known inequality by Díaz and Saa which, in our case, involves an anisotropic operator, such as the p(x)-Laplacian, $\Delta _{p(x)}u\equiv {\rm div}( \vert \nabla u \vert ^{p(x)-2}\nabla u)$. Our present extension of this inequality enables us to establish several new results on the uniqueness of solutions and comparison principles for some anisotropic quasilinear elliptic equations. Our proofs take advantage of certain convexity properties of the energy functional associated with the p(x)-Laplacian.

We find positive rapidly decaying solutions for the equation

$$ -\text{div}(K(x)\nabla u)=K(x)u^{2^*-1}+\lambda K(x)|x|^{\alpha-2}u $$

in $\mathbb{R}^N$, where $N\geq3$, the nonlinearity is given by the critical Sobolev exponent $2^*=2N/(N-2)$, the weight is $K(x)=\exp(\tfrac14|x|^\alpha)$, $\alpha\geq2$ and $\lambda$ is a parameter.

We establish the existence of positive solutions with two peaks being located on the boundary of the domain for the problem −Δu + λu = up in antipodal invariant domains including ball domains with Neumann boundary conditions. Here p is the critical Sobolev exponent (N + 2)/(N − 2). The shape of the solutions and the location of the peaks are also studied.

Let $(A_m)_{m \in {\mathop Z}}$ be a sequence of bounded linear maps acting on an arbitrary Banach space X and admitting an exponential trichotomy and let $f_m:X \to X$ be a Lispchitz map for every $m\in {\mathop Z} $. We prove that whenever the Lipschitz constants of $f_m$, $m \in {\mathop Z} $, are uniformly small, the nonautonomous dynamics given by $x_{m+1}=A_mx_m+f_m(x_m)$, $m\in {\mathop Z} $, has various types of shadowing. Moreover, if X is finite dimensional and each $A_m$ is invertible we prove that a converse result is also true. Furthermore, we get similar results for one-sided and continuous time dynamics. As applications of our results, we study the Hyers–Ulam stability for certain difference equations and we obtain a very general version of the Grobman–Hartman's theorem for nonautonomous dynamics.

The spectral multiplicity of self-adjoint operators H associated with singular differential expressions of the form

is investigated. Based on earlier work of I. S. Kac and recent results on subordinacy, complete sets of necessary and sufficient conditions for the spectral multiplicity to be one or two are established in terms of: (i) the boundary behaviour of Titchmarsh–Weyl m-functions, and (ii) the asymptotic properties of solutions of Lu = λu, λ∈ℝ, at the endpoints a and b. In particular, it is shown that H has multiplicity two if and only if L is in the limit point case at both a and b and the set of all λ for which no solution of Lu = λu is subordinate at either a or b has positive Lebesgue measure. The results are completely general, subject only to minimal restrictions on the coefficients p(r), q(r)and w(r), and the assumption of separated boundary conditions when L is in the limit circle case at both endpoints.
