In order to investigate the hydrogenation of intermetallic compounds, a gas pressure cell for in situ neutron powder diffraction based on a sapphire crystal tube was constructed. By proper orientation of the single crystal Bragg peaks of the container material can be avoided, resulting in a very low diffraction background. Using a laser heating and gas pressure controller, the hydrogenation (deuteration) of palladium and palladium rich intermetallics was studied in real time up to 8 MPa gas pressure and 700 K. Crystal structure parameters of palladium deuterides could be obtained under various deuterium gas pressures, corresponding to compositional ranges of 0.04≤x≤0.11 for the α-phase and 0.52≤x≤0.72 for the β-phase at 446 K. In situ neutron powder diffraction of the deuteration of a thallium lead palladium intermetallic Tl1-xPbxPd3 shows two superstructures of the cubic closest packing (ccp) to transform independently into a AuCu3 type structure. This proves a direct reaction to the deuterium filled AuCu3 type structure instead of a reaction cascade involving different ccp superstructures and thus gives new insights into the reaction pathways of palladium rich intermetallic compounds.

The room temperature X-ray powder diffraction pattern of Fe2GeSe4, a II2 □ IV VI4 semiconducting compound, has been recorded and evaluated. This material was found to be orthorhombic, a=13.069(1), b=7.559(1), c=6.2037(6) Å, V=612.83(9) Å3, Z=4, Dx=5.42 gcm−3. The structure refinement carried out using the Rietveld method indicated that this material crystallizes in space group Pnma (No. 62) with an olivine type of structure. The refinement of 33 parameters led to RWP=15.3%, RP=10.2% for 5251 step intensities and RB=9.44% and RF=9.36% for 913 reflections.

Time-resolved synchrotron powder diffraction was used to follow the thermal transformation of cement-asbestos. Thermal transformation of asbestos fibers into nonfibrous crystalline phases is a promising solution for the elimination of these hazardous minerals. Time resolution offered by the use of an imaging plate detector with a high-brightness X-ray source allowed for the observation of metastable phases, commonly not detectable with conventional instrumentation. In addition, the use of a closed capillary as a sample holder mimicked the real, novel industrial reactor where cement-asbestos slates are sealed in a tunnel kiln. The changing gas atmosphere in the closed system was shown to affect the final composition of the recrystallized product. This study demonstrates the importance of advanced powder diffraction techniques in this field of applied research.

EXPO2011 is a new package for phasing crystal structures from powder diffraction diagrams. It is able to carry out all the steps necessary for crystal structure solution, from pattern indexation up to Rietveld method for structure refinement: for each step, the basic algorithm is described. Phasing is performed via ab initio (e.g., Direct Methods, integrated by real space refinement) and non ab initio techniques (e.g., simulated annealing algorithm, when molecular geometry is a priori known). Some emphasis is given to running procedures: the main commands and directives are described, to allow the user to run default and non-default phasing attempts.

X-ray powder diffraction investigation of the new high temperature polymorphs beta- and gamma-CaTeO3 and gamma- and delta-CaTe2O5 and picnometric measurements of the room temperature phases of the two compounds have been carried out. The study led to the elucidation of their unit cell structures and assignment of entirely new lattice types and parameters to the room temperature phases of CaTeO3 and CaTe2O5 in contrast and supersession to the existing structural information. The results are as follows: CaTeO3 has only one stable phase at room temperature and temperatures up to 882 °C, i.e., α- and has a triclinic unit cell with a=4.132±0.003 Å, b=6.120±0.006 Å, c=12.836±0.013 Å, α=121.80°, β=99.72°, γ=97.26°. The first high temperature phase stable between 882 and 894 °C, i.e., β-CaTeO3, has a monoclinic lattice: a=20.577±0.007 Å, b=21.857±0.009 Å, c=4.111±0.002 Å, β=96.15°, while the next phase stable above 894 °C, i.e., γ-CaTeO3, has a hexagonal unit cell with parameters: a=14.015±0.0001 Å, c=9.783±0.001 Å, c/a=0.698. CaTe2O5 has one stable phase at temperatures up to 802 °C, i.e., α-CaTe2O5 with a monoclinic lattice and parameters: a=9.069±0.002 Å, b=25.175±0.007 Å, c=3.366±0.001 Å, β=98.29 °. The first high temperature phase stable in the range 802–845°, i.e., β-CaTe2O5, is monoclinic with unit cell parameters: a=4.146±0.001 Å, b=5.334±0.002 Å, c=6.105±0.002 Å, β=98.362 °; the next higher temperature phase stable over 845–857 °C, i.e., γ-CaTe2O5, has an orthorhombic unit cell with: a=8.638±0.001 Å, b=9.291±0.001 Å, c=7.862±0.001 Å and the highest temperature solid phase stable above 857 °C, i.e., δ-CaTe2O5 has a tetragonal unit cell with a=5.764±0.000 Å, c=32.074±0.020 Å, c/a=5.5637.

Three phosphates, MIBaIn2(PO4)3 with MI=Na, K, Cs, isostructural to the langbeinite structure, have been studied from powder diffraction data collected with monochromatic radiation obtained from a conventional X-ray source. Precise powder data are reported, as well as cell parameters, i.e., a=10.026 08(9) Å, a=10.121 57(13) Å and a=10.226 94(9) Å for MI=Na, K and Cs, respectively. A Rietveld refinement has been carried out (space group P213), with final RF factors, 0.061, 0.041 and 0.027, and Rwp factors, 0.196, 0.142 and 0.129, for MI=Na, K and Cs, respectively. There are two octahedrally coordinated In3+ ions in the asymmetric unit and the final refinements suggest disorder on the two sites of the MI/Ba sublattice.

The modified Williamson–Hall and Warren–Averbach methods were used successfully for analyzing experimentally observed anisotropic X-ray diffraction line broadening and for determining reliable values of crystallite size and dislocation density in cerium oxide. The modified Williamson–Hall plot gives 22.3(2) nm for volume-weighted crystallite size, while the modified Warren–Averbach produces 18.0(2) nm for area-weighted grain size. The dislocation density and effective outer cut-off radius of dislocations obtained from the modified Warren–Averbach method are 1.8(3)×1015 m−2 and 15.5(1) nm, respectively.

The size of dopant-rich nanodomains was assessed in four samples of Ce1−μ Yμ O2−μ/2 through systematic pair distribution function (PDF) refinements. Experimental G(r) curves were fitted by different structural models with the aim of finding a description which balanced precise structure parameterization and reasonable number of parameters. The most reliable model was a single Y2O3-like phase, which best accommodated to the close relationship between the fluorite (CeO2-like) and C-type (Y2O3-like) structures. In this model, a refined cation coordinate, x(M2), measured the relative occurrence in the G(r) of the chemical environment of Y and Ce at any value of r. The r-value at which x(M2) vanished, i.e. at which the refined C-type cell becomes a redundant, low-symmetry description of a fluorite cell, was assumed as the size of a C-type domain. Subtle features in G(r) could be attributed to the fluorite or C-type phase up to ~500 Å thanks to the narrow instrumental resolution function of the ID31 beamline (now ID22) at the ESRF, which allows us to get high resolution PDF data.

Validating phase quantification procedures of powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) data for an implementation in an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited environment has been challenging due to a general lack of suitable certified reference materials. The preparation of highly pure and crystalline reference materials and mixtures thereof may exceed the costs for a profitable and justifiable implementation. This study presents a method for the validation of XRD phase quantifications based on semi-synthetic datasets that reduces the effort for a full method validation drastically. Datasets of nearly pure reference substances are stripped of impurity signals and rescaled to 100% crystallinity, thus eliminating the need for the preparation of ultra-pure and -crystalline materials. The processed datasets are then combined numerically while preserving all sample- and instrument-characteristic features of the peak profile, thereby creating multi-phase diffraction patterns of precisely known composition. The number of compositions and repetitions is only limited by computational power and storage capacity. These datasets can be used as input files for the phase quantification procedure, in which statistical validation parameters such as precision, accuracy, linearity, and limits of detection and quantification can be determined from a statistically sound number of datasets and compositions.

Multivariate statistical analysis (MSA) is applied to the extraction of chemically relevant signals acquired with a micro-X-ray fluorescence (μ-XRF) mapping (full-spectral imaging) system. The separation of components into individual histograms enables separation of overlapping peaks, which is useful in qualitatively determining the presence of chemical species that have overlapping emission lines, and holds potential for quantitative analysis of constituent phases via these same histograms. The usefulness of MSA for μ-XRF analysis is demonstrated by application to a geological rock core obtained from a subsurface compressed air energy storage (CAES) site. Coupling of the μ-XRF results to those of quantitative powder X-ray diffraction analysis enables improved detection of trace phases present in the geological specimen. The MSA indicates that the spatial distribution of pyrite, a potentially reactive phase by oxidation, has low concentration and thus minimal impact on CAES operations.

The powder diffraction pattern of the perovskite AgNbO3 has been measured using CuKα1 radiation with an incident beam focusing monochromator to eliminate the Kα2 component. Indexing the pattern shows that the multipartite cell is 2×2×4 times that of the pseudocubic subcell. Comparison is made with the diffraction pattern of NaNbO3, which has a similar multipartite unit cell. There are strong similarities, but close inspection shows that the structures are not isomorphous. The paper concludes with a discussion of the figure of merit FN for pseudosymmetric structures. It is suggested that two figures of merit be reported. The first should be the standard one using either all measured reflections or just the first 30. The proposed second figure of merit does not include any superlattice reflections. These superlattice reflections tend to be very weak, resulting in a low completeness factor and relatively large error in the measurement of their position. This effect produces an unrealistically low value of the standard figure of merit. By including only “main” reflections, i.e., those reflections that are common to both the low-symmetry and high-symmetry parent phase (if it exists), a much better estimate of the quality of the fitting of the measured diffraction pattern is obtained.

A Mg-stabilized triclinic tricalcium silicate form of type Ca3−xMgxSiO5, T3, was synthesized. Rietveld analysis using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data suggested that unlike the T1 form, the T3 structure was unmodulated. This refinement illustrated that the only existing model for a triclinic form of tricalcium silicate (T1) can be used to describe the nonmodulated T3 form.

In order to complete the research on the Fe–Se binary system, the phase structures with selenium contents from 50 to 60 at.% have been studied. Fe–Se binary samples used in this study were prepared by the high-temperature solid-state reaction method, and the phase structure of each sample was determined by powder X-ray diffraction. The solid solubility of the Fe3Se4 phase was determined to be from 56.1 to 57.6 at.% Se based on the values of unit-cell parameters. Magnetic properties of the samples were also studied.

An instrument for the simultaneous measurement of X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) data and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) data under a controlled humidity condition has been developed in order to achieve a design concept of reliable and simple in operation. Examples of the application to studies on hydration, dehydration, and rehydration processes of pharmaceutical compounds under various humidity conditions are presented. The usefulness of the present XRD-DSC system will be demonstrated.

Potassium hydrogen fluoride KHF2 is tetragonal at room temperature: a=5.667(1) Å, c=6.795(1) Å, d=2.38, Z=4, space group I4/mcm (No. 140). It gives a polymorphic transition at 196 °C to a cubic form: a=6.435(1) Å, Z=4, space group Fm3m, melts at 239 °C, and then dissociates into gaseous HF and solid KF.

Polycrystalline lead iodide, PbI2, was recrystallized from hot water to reproducibly obtain flat plate-like crystals, which manifested extreme preferred orientation greatly favoring the 001, 002, 003, and 004 planes. Polycrystalline samples of PbI2 were intercalated with tripropylamine, simultaneously producing a “new” intercalate 001 peak at 7.791°2θ (d=1.1347 nm) and diminishing the host PbI2 001 peak at 12.67°2θ (d=0.6980 nm). This is consistent with large increases in the c direction of the unit cell associated with inserting a guest between adjacent iodide layers of the host PbI2. Experimental powder diffraction results are compared to theoretical values calculated using CRYSTALMAKER and CRYSTALDIFFRACT software

Europium nitride (EuN), which is potentially used as an activator for nitride luminescent materials, was prepared by direct nitridation at 600 °C in a NH3 atmosphere. X-ray powder diffraction and composition analysis of the nitrided sample were carefully conducted under an oxygen-free environment. The nitrided sample was found to be mononitride with NaCl structure. An appreciable amount of oxygen (∼0.06 a.u.) was detected, but no secondary oxide phase was found. The results suggest oxygen dissolution into the lattice of EuN.

The linear coefficient of thermal expansion for three silicon single-crystal samples, taken from the head, middle, and tail of the same boule, and their powder samples have been measured at room temperature by using an X-ray powder diffractometer. All samples yield the same expansion value α=2.45 (± 0.04) × 10−6 °C at 25 °C. The results of this experiment show that the linear coefficient of thermal expansion of silicon at room temperature is not dependent on its single-crystal state or its powder state.

Crystal structure and structural disorder of Ba3MgSi2O8 were reinvestigated by laboratory X-ray powder diffraction. The title compound was found to be trigonal with space group P3m1, Z=1, and unit-cell dimensions a=0.561 453(4) nm, c=0.727 629(4) nm, and V=0.198 641(2) nm3. The initial structural model used for structure refinement was taken from that of glaserite (K3NaS2O8) and modified by a split-atom model. In the split-atom model, one of the two types of Ba sites and that of SiO4 tetrahedra were, respectively, positionally and orientationally disordered. The new crystal structure and structural disorder were refined by the Rietveld method. The maximum-entropy-method-based pattern fitting (MPF) method was used to confirm the validity of the split-atom model, in which conventional structure bias caused by assuming intensity partitioning was minimized. The final reliability indices calculated from MPF were Rwp=6.52%, S=1.36, Rp=4.84%, RB=0.97%, and RF=0.52%. Details of the disorder structure of Ba3MgSi2O8 are shown in the three-dimensional and two-dimensional electron-density distribution maps determined by MPF.

X-ray diffraction (XRD) has been routinely employed in the Earth sciences to characterize the crystallography of rocks and minerals. Routine characterization of samples too small for analysis by classic automated powder diffraction methods becomes challenging without access to single crystal or micro-diffraction equipment. Here, we show that a traditional Gandolfi camera lined with an image-plate (IP) as the detection medium can return a fully quantitative diffraction pattern from a sub-milligram single grain specimen in a simple and straightforward manner. Data pertaining to peak positions (d-spacings) were assessed using SRM640c Si powder, while intensity data were compared to the certified values for intensity standard SRM676a alumina powder. The refined unit-cell dimension of Si powder differed from the certified value of 5.4312 Å by no more than 0.0003 Å with a standard deviation (σ) of 0.0002 Å among the three experiments. For intensity, the σ and disparity from the certified values of three diffraction experiments on SRM676a were both <2%. The results of a comparative study of the crystallographic parameters determined for a naturally occurring garnet and clinopyroxene given through the refinement of their crystal structure by single-crystal XRD method are presented. These show through Rietveld refinement of X-ray data obtained by the Gandolfi–IP method outlined here that both accurate and precise XRD data can be produced in a timely and cost-effective manner using only an IP, Gandolfi camera, and software freely available on the internet.
