Service-oriented computing is calling for novel computational models and languages with well-disciplined primitives for client–server interaction, structured orchestration and unexpected events handling. We present CaSPiS, a process calculus where the conceptual abstractions of sessioning and pipelining play a central role for modelling service-oriented systems. CaSPiS sessions are two-sided, uniquely named and can be nested. CaSPiS pipelines permit orchestrating the flow of data produced by different sessions. The calculus is also equipped with operators for handling (unexpected) termination of the partner's side of a session. Several examples are presented to provide evidence of the flexibility of the chosen set of primitives. One key contribution is a fully abstract encoding of Misra et al.'s orchestration language Orc. Another main result shows that in CaSPiS it is possible to program a ‘graceful termination’ of nested sessions, which guarantees that no session is forced to hang forever after the loss of its partner.

The shuffle product of two words u and v, denoted u‖v, is the set of all words of the form x1y1x2y2…xnyn for some n and for some (possible empty) words x1, …xn, y1, …yn, such that u = x1x2…xn, and v = y1y2…yn. In other words, u‖v is the set of all possible words that can be obtained by merging u and v so that the letters of u and v separately maintain their original orders but are allowed to alternate arbitrarily. The shuffle product of languages L and M, denoted L‖M, is the union of all u‖v for u ∈ L and v ∈ M.

This article surveys a variety of approaches to integration theory that have arisen in the context of continuous domain theory. The presentation is set in a broader context of ‘positive’ analysis, analysis where order-theoretic notions and notions of positivity play a key role.

The use of interactive theorem provers to establish the correctness of critical parts of a software development or for formalizing mathematics is becoming more common and feasible in practice. However, most mature theorem provers lack a direct treatment of partial and general recursive functions; overcoming this weakness has been the objective of intensive research during the last decades. In this article, we review several techniques that have been proposed in the literature to simplify the formalization of partial and general recursive functions in interactive theorem provers. Moreover, we classify the techniques according to their theoretical basis and their practical use. This uniform presentation of the different techniques facilitates the comparison and highlights their commonalities and differences, as well as their relative advantages and limitations. We focus on theorem provers based on constructive type theory (in particular, Agda and Coq) and higher-order logic (in particular Isabelle/HOL). Other systems and logics are covered to a certain extent, but not exhaustively. In addition to the description of the techniques, we also demonstrate tools which facilitate working with the problematic functions in particular theorem provers.

This paper introduces the following new constructions on stable domains and event structures: the tensor product; the linear function space; and the exponential. These give rise to a monoidal closed category of dI-domains and to stable event structures, which can be used to interpret intuitionistic linear logic. Finally, the usefulness of the category of stable event structures for modeling concurrency and its relation to other models are discussed.

This article gives an overview of automatic amortized resource analysis (AARA), a technique for inferring symbolic resource bounds for programs at compile time. AARA has been introduced by Hofmann and Jost in 2003 as a type system for deriving linear worst-case bounds on the heap-space consumption of first-order functional programs with eager evaluation strategy. Since then AARA has been the subject of dozens of research articles, which extended the analysis to different resource metrics, other evaluation strategies, non-linear bounds, and additional language features. All these works preserved the defining characteristics of the original paper: local inference rules, which reduce bound inference to numeric (usually linear) optimization; a soundness proof with respect to an operational cost semantics; and the support of amortized analysis with the potential method.

Abstract Stone Duality (ASD) is a direct axiomatisation of general topology, in contrast to the traditional and all other contemporary approaches, which rely on a prior notion of discrete set, type or object of a topos.

ASD reconciles mathematical and computational viewpoints, providing an inherently computable calculus that does not sacrifice key properties of real analysis such as compactness of the closed interval. Previous theories of recursive analysis failed to do this because they were based on points; ASD succeeds because, like locale theory and formal topology, it is founded on the algebra of open subspaces.

ASD is presented as a lambda calculus, of which we provide a self-contained summary, as the foundational background has been investigated in earlier work.

The core of the paper constructs the real line using two-sided Dedekind cuts. We show that the closed interval is compact and overt, where these concepts are defined using quantifiers. Further topics, such as the Intermediate Value Theorem, are presented in a separate paper that builds on this one.

The interval domain plays an important foundational role. However, we see intervals as generalised Dedekind cuts, which underly the construction of the real line, not as sets or pairs of real numbers.

We make a thorough study of arithmetic, in which our operations are more complicated than Moore's, because we work constructively, and we also consider back-to-front (Kaucher) intervals.

Finally, we compare ASD with other systems of constructive and computable topology and analysis.

Completeness is a key feature of abstract interpretation. It corresponds to exactness of the abstraction of fix-points and relies upon the need of absence of false alarms in static program analysis. Making abstract interpretation complete is therefore a major problem in approximating the semantics of programming languages. In this paper, we consider the problem of making abstract interpretations complete by minimally modifying the predicate transformer, i.e. the semantics, of a program. We study the mathematical properties of complete functions on complete lattices and prove the existence of minimal transformations of monotone functions to achieve completeness. We then apply minimal complete transformers to prove the minimality of standard program transformations in security, such as static program monitoring.

We introduce a method to associate calculi of proof terms and rewrite rules with cut elimination procedures for logical deduction systems (i.e., Gentzen-style sequent calculi) in the case of intuitionistic logic. We illustrate this method using two different versions of the cut rule for a variant of the intuitionistic fragment of Kleene's logical deduction system G3.

Our systems are in fact calculi of explicit substitution, where the cut rule introduces an explicit substitution and the left-→ rule introduces a binding of the result of a function application. Cut propagation steps of cut elimination correspond to propagation of explicit substitutions, and propagation of weakening (to eliminate it) corresponds to propagation of index-updating operations. We prove various subject reduction, termination, and confluence properties for our calculi.

Our calculi improve on some earlier calculi for logical deduction systems in a number of ways. By using de Bruijn indices, our calculi qualify as first-order term rewriting systems (TRS's), allowing us to use correctly certain results for TRS's about termination. Unlike in some other calculi, each of our calculi has only one cut rule and we do not need unusual features of sequents.

We show that the substitution and index-updating mechanisms of our calculi work the same way as the substitution and index-updating mechanisms of Kamareddine and Ríos' λs and λt, two well-known systems of explicit substitution for the standard λ-calculus. By a change in the format of sequents, we obtain similar results for a known λ-calculus with variables and explicit substitutions, Rose's λbxgc.

We characterise quasivarieties and varieties of ordered algebras categorically in terms of regularity, exactness and the existence of a suitable generator. The notions of regularity and exactness need to be understood in the sense of category theory enriched over posets. We also prove that finitary varieties of ordered algebras are cocompletions of their theories under sifted colimits (again, in the enriched sense).

In the literature ther are two main notins of model for the second order λ-calculus: one by Bruce, Meyer and Mitchell (the BMM-model, for short) in set-theoretical formulation and one category-theoretical by Seely. Here we generalise Seely's notion, using semifunctors and semi-adjunctions from Hayashi, and introduce λ2-algebras, λη2-algebras, λ2-models and λη-models, similarly to the untyped λ-calculus. Non-extensional abstraction of both term and type variables is described by semi-adjunctions (essentially as in Martini's thesis). We show that also for second order sume, the β-(and commutation!) conversions correspond to semi-functoriality and that the (additional) η-conversion corresponds to ordinary fuctioriality.

In the above framework various examples – well known ones and variations – are described. Also, we determine the place of the BMM-models; an earlier version of the latter has been reported by Jacobs.

We focus attention on a language ℒ generated by a set of elementary actions under operations of sequential composition, external binary choice, iteration, and non-nested disjoint parallel composition: that is, on an especially simple parallel language without explicit internal, or ‘local’, nondeterminism. ℒ is nondeterministic, despite the restriction to external choice, since a given action may occur in both subterms F and G of the parallel composition F ║ G. We exhibit a single set of equations that axiomatizes both step bisimulation and pomset equivalence on ℒ Given that step bisimulation and pomset equivalence are incomparable on the language ℒ+ obtained from ℒ by relaxing just the constraint on choice, the coincidence of these equivalences on ℒ suggests that the elimination of explicit internal choice can result in simplifications at the semantic level. We reinforce this impression by showing for ℒ that step bisimulation (i) coincides with pomset bisimulation equivalence, (ii) is real-time consistent, and (iii) has step trees as concrete representatives of its equivalence classes. Moreover, we show that none of these results holds for the language ℒ+ Finally, step trace equivalence is proved not to coincide with step bisimulation equivalence on ℒ.

It is well-known that cellular automata can be characterized as the set of translation-invariant continuous functions over a compact metric space; this point of view makes it easy to extend their definition from grids to Cayley graphs. Cayley graphs have a number of useful features: the ability to graphically represent finitely generated group elements and their relations; to name all vertices relative to an origin; and the fact that they have a well-defined notion of translation. We propose a notion of graphs, which preserves or generalizes these features. Whereas Cayley graphs are very regular, generalized Cayley graphs are arbitrary, although of a bounded degree. We extend cellular automata theory to these arbitrary, bounded degree, time-varying graphs. The obtained notion of cellular automata is stable under composition and under inversion.

Coinductive predicates express persisting ‘safety’ specifications of transition systems. Previous observations by Hermida and Jacobs identify coinductive predicates as suitable final coalgebras in a fibration – a categorical abstraction of predicate logic. In this paper, we follow the spirit of a seminal work by Worrell and study final sequences in a fibration. Our main contribution is to identify some categorical ‘size restriction’ axioms that guarantee stabilization of final sequences after ω steps. In its course, we develop a relevant categorical infrastructure that relates fibrations and locally presentable categories, a combination that does not seem to be studied a lot. The genericity of our fibrational framework can be exploited for binary relations (i.e. the logic of ‘binary predicates’) for which a coinductive predicate is bisimilarity, constructive logics (where interests are growing in coinductive predicates) and logics for name-passing processes.

We prove that the iterative construction of initial algebras converges for endofunctors F of many-sorted sets whenever F has an initial algebra. In the case of one-sorted sets, the convergence takes n steps where n is either an infinite regular cardinal or is at most 3. Dually, the existence of a many-sorted terminal coalgebra implies that the iterative construction of a terminal coalgebra converges. Moreover, every endofunctor with a fixed-point pair larger than the number of sorts is proved to have a terminal coalgebra. As demonstrated by James Worell, the number of steps here need not be a cardinal even in the case of a single sort: it is ω + ω for the finite power-set functor. The above results do not hold for related categories, such as graphs: we present non-constructive initial algebras and terminal coalgebras.

This paper presents a cut-elimination procedure for intuitionistic propositional logic in which cut is eliminated directly, without introducing the multiple-cut rule mix, and in which pushing cut above contraction is one of the reduction steps. The presentation of this procedure is preceded by an analysis of Gentzen's mix-elimination procedure, made in the perspective of permuting cut with contraction. We also show that in the absence of implication, pushing cut above contraction does not pose problems for directly eliminating cut.

We define and develop two-level type theory (2LTT), a version of Martin-Löf type theory which combines two different type theories. We refer to them as the ‘inner’ and the ‘outer’ type theory. In our case of interest, the inner theory is homotopy type theory (HoTT) which may include univalent universes and higher inductive types. The outer theory is a traditional form of type theory validating uniqueness of identity proofs (UIP). One point of view on it is as internalised meta-theory of the inner type theory. There are two motivations for 2LTT. Firstly, there are certain results about HoTT which are of meta-theoretic nature, such as the statement that semisimplicial types up to level n can be constructed in HoTT for any externally fixed natural number n. Such results cannot be expressed in HoTT itself, but they can be formalised and proved in 2LTT, where n will be a variable in the outer theory. This point of view is inspired by observations about conservativity of presheaf models. Secondly, 2LTT is a framework which is suitable for formulating additional axioms that one might want to add to HoTT. This idea is heavily inspired by Voevodsky’s Homotopy Type System (HTS), which constitutes one specific instance of a 2LTT. HTS has an axiom ensuring that the type of natural numbers behaves like the external natural numbers, which allows the construction of a universe of semisimplicial types. In 2LTT, this axiom can be assumed by postulating that the inner and outer natural numbers types are isomorphic. After defining 2LTT, we set up a collection of tools with the goal of making 2LTT a convenient language for future developments. As a first such application, we develop the theory of Reedy fibrant diagrams in the style of Shulman. Continuing this line of thought, we suggest a definition of $(\infty,1)$-category and give some examples.

Every dialogue category comes equipped with a continuation monad defined by applying the negation functor twice. In this paper, we advocate that this double negation monad should be understood as part of a larger parametric monad (or a lax action) with parameter taken in the opposite of the dialogue category. This alternative point of view has one main conceptual benefit: it reveals that the strength of the continuation monad is the fragment of a more fundamental and symmetric structure – provided by a distributivity law between the parametric continuation monad and the canonical action of the dialogue category over itself. The purpose of this work is to describe the formal properties of this parametric continuation monad and of its distributivity law.

The relationship between continuous-time dynamics and the corresponding discrete schemes, and its generally limited validity, is an important and widely acknowledged field within numerical analysis. In this paper, we propose another, more physical, viewpoint on this topic in order to understand the possible failure of discretisation procedures and the way to fix it. Three basic examples, the logistic equation, the Lotka–Volterra predator–prey model and Newton's law for planetary motion, are worked out. They illustrate the deep difference between continuous-time evolutions and discrete-time mappings, hence shedding some light on the more general duality between continuous descriptions of natural phenomena and discrete numerical computations.

We describe a polymorphic, typed lambda calculus with substructural features. This calculus extends the first-order substructural lambda calculus αλ associated with bunched logic. A particular novelty of our new calculus is the substructural treatment of second-order variables. This is accomplished through the use of bunches of type variables in typing contexts. Both additive and multiplicative forms of polymorphic abstraction are then supported. The calculus has sensible proof-theoretic properties and a straightforward categorical semantics using indexed categories. We produce a model for additive polymorphism with first-order bunching based on partial equivalence relations. We consider additive and multiplicative existential quantifiers separately from the universal quantifiers.
