Large mafic sills in the Ahlmannryggen region of western Dronning Maud Land were intruded into partially lithified sediments of the mid-Proterozoic Ritscherflya Supergroup. Clastic sedimentary dykes intruding the thick mafic sills have been identified, and show evidence for fluidization of the partially lithified sediments. Previous work had demonstrated in situ fluidization and localized anatectic melting. This study demonstrates mobilization of the fluidized sediments, with penetration at least 50 m into the fractured, intruding sill. Physical features within the clastic dykes (e.g. sediment balls, flame structures) suggest that the sediments were largely unconsolidated, or at most only partially lithified. The presence of a thin zone of anatectic melt along the dyke—sill contact suggests that the mafic sill was still hot (c. 700°C) at the time of sedimentary dyke injection.

This study is the first to describe the winter distribution of crabeater seals (Lobodon carcinophagus) in East Antarctica. The study was conducted in the Mertz Glacier Polynya region from July to August 1999. In total 89 crabeater seals were seen in 26 groups which ranged in size from 1 to 35 animals (mean = 3.2). The mean observed haulout density along a 200 m wide strip transect was 0.108 seals per km2, or 0.042 groups per km2. Crabeater seals were not uniformly distributed in the polynya but selected areas of stable ice over shallow (< 1000 m) waters. We used a generalized linear model to assess the relationship of seal distribution to the physical attributes of sea ice concentration, thickness, and ocean depth. We found that ice thickness and ocean depth were the most important determinants of seal distribution. Crabeater seals occurred in areas where the ice affords them a stable haulout platform while allowing them access to Antarctic krill that live directly beneath the ice.

The macroinfauna at depths 30–115 m was sampled in March–April 1989, c. two months after an oil spill that resulted from the grounding of the Bahia Paraiso. Stations consisted of the oil-spill site and a comparable control location, and two historical sites previously sampled in 1971. The historical sites were located at two distinct points along a known continuum of increasing physical stability with depth, attributed to disturbances from glacial calving. Macroinfaunal assemblages at most stations were characterized by very high densities and numbers of taxa. There were no significant differences (P<0.05) between the oil-spill and control sites in numbers of individuals, species, or families; nor were there any major differences in dominant fauna or overall community composition. The absence of a detectable impact on the fauna is consistent with results of hydrocarbon analyses, which showed that subtidal sediments were nearly devoid of contamination emanating from the Bahia Paraiso. The assemblage at the shallower of the two historical sites, however, showed a substantial change over the 18-yr period between studies. This change consisted of a shift toward a more species-rich and abundant macroinfauna characteristic of the more physically stable parts of the harbour. This change may be related to the fact that the glacier face near this site has retreated c. 250 m over the last 20 yrs, resulting in less physical disturbance of the adjacent seafloor.

We studied the glacial geomorphology and geochronology of two ice-free valleys in the Dufek Massif (Antarctic Specially Protected Area 119) providing new constraints on past ice sheet thickness in the Weddell Sea embayment. 10Be and 26Al cosmogenic surface exposure dating provided chronological control. Seven glacial stages are proposed. These include an alpine glaciation, with subsequent (mid-Miocene?) over-riding by a warm-based ice sheet. Subsequent advances are marked by a series of minor drift deposits at 760 m altitude at > 1 Ma, followed by at least two later ice sheet advances that are characterized by extensive drift sheet deposition. An advance of plateau ice field outlet glaciers from the south postdated these drift sheets. The most recent advance involved the cold-based expansion of the ice sheet from the north at the Last Glacial Maximum, or earlier, which deposited a series of bouldery moraines during its retreat. This suggests at most a relatively modest expansion of the ice sheet and outlet glaciers dominated by a lateral ice expansion of just 2–3 km and maintaining a thickness similar to that of the northern ice sheet front. These observations are consistent with other reports of modest ice sheet thickening around the Weddell Sea embayment during the Last Glacial Maximum.

The geographical distribution and depth zonation of Eusirus perdentatus Chevreux, 1912 in the eastern Weddell Sea and adjacent Lazarev Sea (Antarctica) is described. A total of 963 individuals of this carnivorous predator caught during six successive cruises at 71 stations between 176 and 799 metres water depths were used. Individuals of E. perdentatus have been kept alive for nearly five months in the laboratory. During this period females released 53 juveniles in April. Oocytes and embryos of females have been counted and measured. The duration of embryonic development in E. perdentatus was estimated at c. 12 months, using an empirical relationship based on the mean diameter of 4390 fertilized eggs. There is strong evidence that this species is semelparous with hatching of juveniles at the end of austral summer. Two methods, herein termed as Year Class Model and Moult Class Model, have been applied in order to describe the growth of females by means of cumulative length-frequency data.

Brown trout were introduced to the Van den Boogaard River on subantarctic Marion Island in 1964, and a small population became established. The last individual was seen in 1984, and the species is now considered to be extinct on the island. Their diet was exclusively allochthonous, with snails and spiders predominating. Ages estimated at six to eleven years showed that spawning must have occurred since the original introduction. Since the Van den Boogaard River enters the sea via a waterfall, it is postulated that trout were not able to practice an anadromous life-style, and that this, as well as other factors connected with the impoverished nature of the stream, led to dwarfing of the resident population. No further introductions of alien fish to Marion Island should be contemplated.

Increasingly, many aspects of the study of Antarctica and the high southern latitudes are being aided by various types of numerical models. Among these are the General Circulation Models (GCMs), which are powerful tools that can be used to understand the maintenance of present atmospheric climate and determine its sensitivity to imposed changes. The changes in the ability of GCMs used over the last two decades to simulate aspects of atmospheric climate at high southern latitudes are traced and it is concluded there has been a steady improvement in model products. The task of assessing model climates in high southern latitudes is made difficult by the uncertainties in the data used for the climatological statistics. It is suggested that the quality of the climates produced by most modern GCMs in many aspects cannot be said to be poor, especially considering the uncertainties in ‘observed’ climate. There is obviously need for improvements in both modelling and observations. Finally, some topics are highlighted in which the formulation of models could be improved, with special reference to better treatment of physical processes at high southern latitudes.

A revised stratigraphy of Cenozoic volcanic outcrops in the Brandy Bay area on James Ross Island is obtained by combining palaeomagnetic and stratigraphical anlysis with 40Ar/39Ar dating. The fieldwork was carried out between January and March 2002. Oriented palaeomagnetic samples were obtained from 17 volcanic units, the majority of samples being from lava-fed deltas. Individually the deltas are a few to several hundred metres thick and were formed during voluminous basaltic eruptions within an ice sheet or in a marine setting. Out of the sampled units, 15 carry a stable primary magnetization; six were of normal polarity and nine were reversely magnetized. Our 40Ar/39Ar dating constrains the emplacement of most of the Brandy Bay basalts to the Gilbert chron, with the youngest dated unit having an age of 3.95 Ma and the oldest 6.16 Ma. The mean palaeomagnetic field direction from 14 units has an inclination I = −76° and declination D = 352°, α95 = 7°. The results further suggest that the lava caps on some of the deltas have high remanent intensity and should generate recognizable aeromagnetic anomalies. The combination of palaeomagnetic and isotopic analysis with field mapping methods in a single field area is unique in Antarctica so far and demonstrates that the combination can yield rigorous local stratigraphy in a geographically remote volcanic terrain having discontinuous outcrops.

Earth-orbiting satellites can now monitor calving of large icebergs from ice shelves bordering the marine West Antarctic Ice Sheet, and recent calving events have stimulated interest in calving mechanisms. To advance this interest pioneering work in brittle and ductile fracture mechanics is reviewed, leading to a new application to calving of giant icebergs from Antarctic ice shelves. The aim is to view iceberg calving as more than terminal events for Antarctic ice when glaciologists lose interest. Instead calving launches Antarctic ice into the larger dynamic system of Earth's climate machine. This encourages a holistic approach to glaciology.

Four pedons on each of four drift sheets in the Lake Wellman area of the Darwin Mountains were sampled for chemical and microbial analyses. The four drifts, Hatherton, Britannia, Danum, and Isca, ranged from early Holocene (10 ka) to mid-Quaternary (c. 900 ka). The soil properties of weathering stage, salt stage, and depths of staining, visible salts, ghosts, and coherence increase with drift age. The landforms contain primarily high-centred polygons with windblown snow in the troughs. The soils are dominantly complexes of Typic Haplorthels and Typic Haploturbels. The soils were dry and alkaline with low levels of organic carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus. Electrical conductivity was high accompanied by high levels of water soluble anions and cations (especially calcium and sulphate in older soils). Soil microbial biomass, measured as phospholipid fatty acids, and numbers of culturable heterotrophic microbes, were low, with highest levels detected in less developed soils from the Hatherton drift. The microbial community structure of the Hatherton soil also differed from that of the Britannia, Danum and Isca soils. Ordination revealed the soil microbial community structure was influenced by soil development and organic carbon.

Use of the International Geomagnetic Reference Field Model (IGRF) to construct magnetic anomaly maps can lead to problems with the accurate determination of magnetic anomalies that are readily apparent at the edges of local or regional magnetic surveys carried out at different epochs. The situation is severe in areas like Antarctica, where ionospheric activity is intense and only a few ground magnetic observatories exist. This makes it difficult to properly separate from ionospheric variations the secular variation of the core magnetic field. We examine two alternatives to the piecewise-continuous IGRF core magnetic field in Antarctica for the last 45 years: the present global Comprehensive Model (CM4) and the new version of the Antarctic Reference Model (ARM). Both these continuous models are better at representing the secular variation in Antarctica than the IGRF. Therefore, their use is recommended for defining the crustal magnetic field of Antarctica (e.g. the next generation of the Antarctic Digital Magnetic Anomaly Map).

During the 2007–08 Spanish Antarctic campaign, two moorings of bottom pressure sensors were carried out over a ten week period. This paper presents the results of the tidal analysis from sea level records obtained at Deception and Livingston islands (South Shetland Islands, Antarctica). The main objective of this paper is to present a detailed study of the tidal characteristics at these two islands, for which statistical and harmonic analysis techniques are applied to the tidal records. A geodetic network was used to reference the pressure sensors. Geometric levelling, with an accuracy of 1 mm, allowed us to link the tidal marks with geodetic vertices located on Livingston and Deception islands. The amplitudes and phase lags obtained by harmonic analysis are compared to the harmonic constants of several coastal stations and co-tidal and co-range charts. Results show an evident influence of tides in the sea level signal, with a clear mixed semi-diurnal behaviour and a daily inequality between high and low waters. Measurements of salinity and temperature were made using electronic sensors. Results from this study showed that salinity and temperature were strongly influenced by tides. Seawater temperature varied in a manner that was consistent with the time series of residual bottom pressure.

Protection of Antarctica's biodiversity and ecosystem values is enshrined in the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty, which provides for the designation of Antarctic Specially Protected Areas (ASPAs) to areas with outstanding values. Concern has been raised that existing ASPAs fail to prioritize areas to maximize the likelihood of ensuring the long-term conservation of Antarctic ecosystems and biodiversity. The absence of systematic and representative protection is particularly acute for inland aquatic ecosystems, which support a disproportionate amount of inland biodiversity. This paper promotes the case for overt inclusion of inland waters as a critical component of a representative protected area framework for Antarctica, thereby addressing their current underrepresentation. We set out a structured approach to enable the selection of representative freshwater systems for inclusion in the ASPA framework that, with modification, could also be applied across other Antarctic habitats. We acknowledge an overall lack of information on the biogeography of inland aquatic diversity and recommend increased use of remote data collection along with classification tools to mitigate this, as well as the need for the consideration of catchment-scale processes. Changes that accompany contemporary and anticipated climate change make the need for the conservation of representative biodiversity increasingly urgent.

A collection of juvenile squid were caught with the Isaacs-Kidd midwater trawl (IKMT) and the Juday plankton net at 86 stations in Prydz Bay (60°–67°30′S, 60°–80°E) to a depth of 500 m but mostly at 0–200 m. Five species were identified, Psychroteuthis glacialis, Alluroteuthis antarcticus, Brachioteuthis sp. and the cranchiids Galiteuthis glacialis and Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni. P. glacialis and the cranchiids were the most abundant species. Young P. glacialis (5–17 mm ML) were taken at depths of 5–200 m but concentrated in the upper 100 m whilst the cranchiids (5–35 mm ML) occurred over a wider vertical range (50–500 m). The regular occurrence of paralarvae and juveniles suggests that all the species reproduce in the Antarctic. Juvenile Vertical distribution appears to differ between species with P. glacialis concentrated relatively near the surface, the cranchiids in the upper part of the Circumpolar Deep Water and A. antarcticus widely distributed to a depth of 900 m.

The geographical distribution of protozoan parasite Cephaloidophora pacifica Avdeev (Order Eugregarininda) associated with Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba, was examined in samples collected from the vicinity of the Antarctic Peninsula, near Syowa Station, and Pacific and Indian sectors of the Southern Ocean. Cephaloidophora pacifica was found at all stations around the Antarctic, with 96.4% of the euphausiids infected (n = 195). The numbers of C. pacifica per krill ranged from 0 to 8089 krill-1, and the average was 350.0 ± 787.8 (mean ± SD). The frequency distributions of C. pacifica showed an overdispersed parasite population (i.e. the variance was greater than the mean) at all locations. Statistical analysis showed that whilst the geographical location did not have a significant effect on intensity of C. pacifica the maturity stage of krill did, with an increasing intensity of infection as krill matures. The infestation of E. superba by eugregarinid protozoan is considered to be a circum-Antarctic phenomenon, and it occurs equally throughout the Southern Ocean.

Six new species of marine Enchytraeidae, Grania hirsuticauda sp.n., G. acanthochaeta sp.n., G. carchinii sp.n., G. angustinasus sp.n., G. antarctica sp.n. and G. algida sp.n., are described from benthic material collected in McMurdo Sound during 1959–61 and Terra Nova Bay in 1988. They represent the first records of this family from below the Antarctic circle and, together with tubificids, the first oligochaetes from the Ross Sea. G. hirsuticauda, apparently the most widespread species in McMurdo Sound, is distinguished by having setae abruptly larger in the posterior third of the body and almost nodulate; a T-shaped prostomial bifurcation of the dorsal vessel, short sperm funnels and sperm sac, and thick-walled spermathecae. G. acanthochaeta possesses a unique, thorn-like, setal morphology and diverticulate spermathecal ampullae. G. carchinii, the only new species lacking lateral setae, is also distinguished by a remarkably high development of the chloragogen tissue and the possession of nephridia at 6/7. G. angustinasus, the most abundant species in the sampling area in Terra Nova Bay, and G. antarctica, have the same setal distribution, size and (curved) shape, but show different forms of penial bulbs (more complex in G. angustinasus) and spermathecal structures (the ampullae being larger and the external pores more posterior in G. antarctica). G. algida is distinguished by its L-shaped setae and carrot-shaped, diverticulate, spermathecal ampullae. All the new species lack cuticular penial stylets as well as spermathecal ectal glands. All species but G. carchinii are peculiar in possessing, in front of the brain, a middorsal vesicular body of specific shape and size containing a few refractile inclusions; a sensory (possibly a statocyst-like) function is suggested for this ‘head organ’, which has not been previously reported in the Oligochaeta.

The management of sediment and water contamination from legacy waste is a significant problem in Antarctica. Although several reports have noted that there are contaminated sites at the abandoned Wilkes Station, a systematic attempt to assess the spatial scale of the problem has not been made, making development of clean-up or preservation programmes difficult. A contaminated site assessment for the old Wilkes Station and surrounds is presented in this paper. The Australian and New Zealand Environment and Conservation Council (ANZECC) sediment and water quality guidelines and background concentration levels (BCL) were used to assess the extent of contamination across Clark Peninsula. Of 67 sediment sites sampled, 72% were contaminated with at least one metal or metalloid, with values exceeding the ANZECC ISQG-High or 2 x BCL. Moreover, 19% were contaminated with four or more metals/metalloids. Of the 93 water samples collected, all but one was contaminated with at least one metal/metalloid concentration exceeding the guidelines, and 96% were contaminated with two or more metals/metalloids. For hydrocarbons in sediment and water, most samples were below quantitation limits. There is a complex pattern of contamination across Clark Peninsula that needs to be considered in future waste treatment, containment or removal operations, and for protection of heritage items.

A summer study of the vertical structure of bi-layered microbial mats was carried out on Byers Peninsula (Livingston Island, South Shetland Islands). These benthic communities had a common basic structure that consisted of two distinct layers differing in composition, morphology and colour. Our sampling focused on mats showing more layering, which thrived over moist soils and at the bottom of ponds. The photosynthetic pigments analysis performed by high-performance liquid chromatography demonstrated a major occurrence of cyanobacteria and diatoms on these mats, the former being more abundant in relative terms on the surface and composed by morphospecies grouping into orders Oscillatoriales, Nostocales and Chroococcales. The areal chlorophyll a concentrations were slightly higher in the deeper layer although not significantly. Our microscopic and chemical analyses showed that non-active biomass accumulates at the surface. Hence, the upper layers showed the sheath pigment scytonemin and higher amounts of exopolysaccharides, as a strategy to cope with environmental stress. On the other hand, the basal layer was composed of more active photosynthetic microbiota, which also revealed a more balanced stoichiometry. Here we exemplify how environmental stresses are potentially overcome by physiological mechanisms developed by microbial mats which also shape their vertical structure.

We report the breeding success of four species of burrow-nesting petrels at sub-Antarctic Marion Island where house mice Mus musculus are the sole introduced mammal. Feral cats Felis catus were present on Marion for four decades from 1949, killing millions of seabirds and greatly reducing petrel populations. Cats were eradicated by 1991, but petrel populations have shown only marginal recoveries. We hypothesize that mice are suppressing their recovery through depredation of petrel eggs and chicks. Breeding success for winter breeders (grey petrels Procellaria cinerea (34±21%) and great-winged petrels Pterodroma macroptera (52±7%)) were lower than for summer breeders (blue petrels Halobaena caerulea (61±6%) and white-chinned petrels Procellaria aequinoctialis (59±6%)) and among winter breeders most chick fatalities were of small chicks up to 14 days old. We assessed the extent of mouse predation by monitoring the inside of 55 burrow chambers with video surveillance cameras (4024 film days from 2012–16) and recorded fatal attacks on grey (3/18 nests filmed, 17%) and great-winged petrel chicks (1/19, 5%). Our results show that burrow-nesting petrels are at risk from mouse predation, providing further motivation for the eradication of mice from Marion Island.

Lithium distributions in lake and pond waters of the McMurdo Dry Valleys of southern Victoria Land, Antarctica were studied to elucidate the origin of dissolved salts and the evolutionary history of the lakes and ponds. The EfLi [(Li/Cl)sample/(Li/Cl)seawater] values of the bottom waters in Lakes Bonney and Fryxell were higher than unity (EfLi=4–7), indicating that the salts originated from sea salts (probably relict seawater) and have been subsequently modified by the contribution of meltwaters containing atmospheric fallout and/or rock and soil weathering products. In contrast, extremely high Li concentrations with high EfLi values in the Don Juan Pond water (EfLi = 180) and the bottom waters of Lake Vanda (EfLi = 40) suggest that the salts originated from deep groundwaters influenced mainly by saline water-rock interactions, as supported by the dissolution experiments of granite in NaCl solution. The low Li concentrations of pond waters with high EfLi values in the Labyrinth indicate that the salts are derived from atmospheric fallout. The decrease of the EfLi values with the increase of Cl concentrations can be explained by the repeated cycles of the migration of Li into the ice phase and subsequent ablation of surface ice, as indicated by seawater freezing experiments.
