The weighted Lq − Lr-estimates for the Stokes flow are given in half-spaces. Furthermore, the weighted decays for the first and second spatial derivatives of the Navier-Stokes flows are also established, where the unboundedness of the projection operator is overcome by employing a decomposition for the convection term. The main results in this paper are inspired by the works of Bae and Jin.

This is the second of two papers in which we study the singularities of solutions of second-order linear elliptic boundary value problems at the edges of piecewise analytic domains in ℝ3. When the opening angle at the edge is variable, there appears trie phenomenon of “crossing” of the exponents of singularities. In Part I, we introduced for the Dirichlet problem appropriate combinations of the simple tensor product singularities.

In this second part, we extend the results of Part I to general non-homogeneous boundary conditions. Moreover, we show how these combinations of singularities appear in a natural way as sections of an analytic vector bundle above the edge. In the case when the interior operator is the Laplacian, we give a simpler expression of the combined singular functions, involving divided differences of powers of a complex variable describing the coordinates in the normal plane to the edge.

We present a new necessary condition for similarity of indefinite Sturm–Liouville operators to self-adjoint operators. This condition is formulated in terms of Weyl–Titchmarsh $m$-functions. We also obtain necessary conditions for regularity of the critical points $0$ and $\infty$ of $J$-non-negative Sturm–Liouville operators. Using this result, we construct several examples of operators with the singular critical point $0$. In particular, it is shown that $0$ is a singular critical point of the operator

acting in the Hilbert space $L^2(\mathbb{R},(3|x|+1)^{-4/3}\,\mathrm{d} x)$ and therefore this operator is not similar to a self-adjoint one. Also we construct a $J$-non-negative Sturm–Liouville operator of type $(\mathrm{sgn} x)(-\mathrm{d}^2/\mathrm{d} x^2+q(x))$ with the same properties.

In this paper we are interested in a sharp result about the global existence and blowup of solutions to a class of pseudo-parabolic equations. First, we represent a unique local weak solution in a new integral form that does not depend on any semigroup. Second, with the help of the Nehari manifold related to the stationary equation, we separate the whole space into two components S+ and S– via a new method, then a sufficient and necessary condition under which the weak solution blows up is established, that is, a weak solution blows up at a finite time if and only if the initial data belongs to S–. Furthermore, we study the decay behaviour of both the solution and the energy functional, and the decay ratios are given specifically.

The class of quadratic systems having a parabola composed of integral curves is examined. Canonical forms are found for the members of this class, and conditions are obtained, using the Bendixson's Criterion and the Poincaré–Bendixson Theorem, for the existence or non-existence of limit cycles, in the case where there is a limit cycle “inside” the parabola (that is, in the convex component of its compliment).

We consider the problem Δu = λf(u) in Ω, u(x) tends to +∞ as x approaches ∂Ω. Here, Ω is a bounded smooth domain in RN, N ≥ 1 and λ is a positive parameter. In this paper, we are interested in analysing the role of the sign changes of the function f in the number of solutions of this problem. As a consequence of our main result, we find that if Ω is star-shaped and f behaves like f(u) = u(u−a)(u−1) with ½ < a < 1, then there is a solution bigger than 1 for all λ and there exists λ0 > 0 such that, for λ < λ0, there is no positive solution that crosses 1 and, for λ > λ0, at least two solutions that cross 1. The proof is based on a priori estimates, the construction of barriers and topological-degree arguments.

We study the variation of the zeros of the Hermite function Hλ(t) with respect to the positive real variable λ. We show that, for each non-negative integer n, Hλ(t) has exactly n + 1 real zeros when n < λ ≤ n + 1, and that each zero increases from – ∞ to ∞ as λ increases. We establish a formula for the derivative of a zero with respect to the parameter λ; this derivative is a completely monotonic function of λ. By-products include some results on the regular sign behaviour of differences of zeros of Hermite polynomials as well as a proof of some inequalities, related to work of W. K. Hayman and E. L. Ortiz for the largest zero of Hλ(t). Similar results on zeros of certain confluent hypergeometric functions are given too. These specialize to results on the first, second, etc., positive zeros of Hermite polynomials.

Existence and uniqueness theorems are obtained for a class of mixed boundary value problems associated with the three-dimensional Helmholtz equation. In this context the boundary of the region of interest is assumed to consist of the union of a finite number of disjoint, closed, bounded Lyapunov surfaces on some of which are imposed Dirichlet conditions whilst Neumann conditions are imposed on the remainder. An integral equation method is adopted throughout. The required boundary integral equations are generated by a modified layer theoretic approach which extends the work of Brakhage and Werner [1] and Leis [2, 3].

We study the Jacobian determinants J = det(∂fi/∂xj) of mappings f: Ω ⊂ ℝn → ℝn in a Sobolev–Orlicz space W1,Φ (Ω,ℝn). Their natural generalizations are the wedge products of differential forms. These products turn out to be in the Hardy–Orlicz spaces ℌp (Ω). Other nonlinear quantities involving the Jacobian, such as J log |J|, are also studied. In general, the Jacobians may change sign and in this sense our results generalize the existing ones concerning positive Jacobians.

We consider two types of equations on a cylindrical domain Ω × (0, ∞), where Ω is a bounded domain in RN, N ≥ 2. The first type is a semilinear damped wave equation, in which the unbounded direction of Ω × (0, ∞) is reserved for time t. The second type is an elliptic equation with a singled-out unbounded variable t. In both cases, we consider solutions that are defined and bounded on Ω × (0, ∞) and satisfy a Dirichlet boundary condition on ∂Ω × (0, ∞). We show that, for some nonlinearities, the equations have bounded solutions that do not stabilize to any single function φ: Ω → R, as t → ∞; rather, they approach a continuum of such functions. This happens despite the presence of damping in the equation that forces the t derivative of bounded solutions to converge to 0 as t → ∞. Our results contrast with known stabilization properties of solutions of such equations in the case N = 1.

The transfer operator corresponding to a uniformly expanding map enjoys good spectral properties. We verify that coupling yields explicit estimates that depend continuously on the expansion and distortion constants of the map. For non-uniformly expanding maps with a uniformly expanding induced map, we obtain explicit estimates for mixing rates (exponential, stretched exponential, polynomial) that again depend continuously on the constants for the induced map together with data associated with the inducing time. Finally, for non-uniformly hyperbolic transformations, we obtain the corresponding estimates for rates of decay of correlations.

This paper extends some recent results of V. Barbu and H. Brézis. It is concerned with bounded solutions of the problem pu″+qu′ ∈ Au, u(0) = a, where A is a maximal monotone operator in a real Hilbert space H and p and q are real functions. Existence and uniqueness theorems are proved, with results on integrability of solutions in various measure spaces on R+. T(t) denotes the family of contractions of D(A) generated by the equation and we obtain a regularising effect on the initial data. Some properties of this family of contractions are studied.

In this paper, we study the existence of infinitely many periodic solutions for the non-autonomous second-order Hamiltonian systems with symmetry. Based on the minimax methods in critical point theory, in particular, the fountain theorem of Bartsch and the symmetric mountain pass lemma due to Kajikiya, we obtain the existence results for both the superquadratic case and the subquadratic case, which unify and sharply improve some recent results in the literature.

Many known results about the stability of selfadjointness are extended to results about the stability of the deficiency index of closed symmetric operators on Hilbert space under perturbation.

Here eigenvalue problems A(λ)u = 0 and their approximations Ai(λ)νi = 0 are studied where the densely denned closed semi-Fredholm operators A and Ai depend holomorphically on the parameter λ. Two different kinds of approximations are established. One is based on a generalisation of the spectral projection and the other on a suitable linearisation of the problem. To this end generalised eigenvectors and suitable product spaces are introduced which provide a representation formula for the principal part of A -1 and A -1, respectively, in the neighbourhood of poles. The convergence of the methods is shown in the framework of discrete convergence theory. The results generalise the corresponding results for linearly dependent A, Ai in two directions: both methods are available for arbitrary holomorphic dependence on the parameter λ, and the first method provides convergent approximations to the whole generalised eigenspace which works also in cases of linear parameter dependence when the usual method fails.

The initial-boundary value problem for the non-homogeneous Navier-Stokes equations including the slipping on the solid boundary is considered. The unique solvability is established locally in time for the three-dimensional problem and globally in time for the two-dimensional problem without so-called smallness restrictions.

Puberty is defined as that stage of individual development characterised by the ability to elaborate functional gametes and by the physical ability to and the desire to play the appropriate rôle in mating. Maturity is defined as that stage of individual development characterised by the exhibition of the maximum fertility ratio and by the ability to produce viable offspring and to rear them.

It is shown that the age at attainment of puberty varies with different stock and with different conditions of husbandry, and that there can be no generally applicable standard. Each worker must standardise his own stock and his own environment.

There are considerable individual differences in the age at maturity, and these are referable to dissimilarities in genetic constitution and to differences in husbandry. In this experiment two groups of animals were involved, coloured and albino. The albinos reached puberty much earlier, showed a longer duration of the cornified stage before mating, a higher proportion of matings at first œstrus, a greater proportion of pregnancies following mating at first œstrus, and a slightly longer interval between first and second œstrus.

In this paper, we study a class of one-dimensional stochastic differential equations driven by fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $ H \gt \frac{1}{2}$. The drift term of the equation is locally Lipschitz and unbounded in the neighbourhood of the origin. We show the existence, uniqueness and positivity of the solutions. The estimates of moments, including the negative power moments, are given. We also develop the implicit Euler scheme, proved that the scheme is positivity preserving and strong convergent, and obtain rate of convergence. Furthermore, by using Lamperti transformation, we show that our results can be applied to stochastic interest rate models such as mean-reverting stochastic volatility model and strongly nonlinear Aït-Sahalia type model.

In this paper we study the asymptotic behaviour of the solution for a nonconvex relaxation model. The time decay rates in both the exponential and algebraic forms of the travelling wave solutions are shown by the weighted energy method. Our results develop and improve the stability theory in [8,9].
