We consider scalar hyperbolic conservation laws with non-convex flux and vanishing, nonlinear and possibly singular, diffusion and dispersion terms. The diffusion has the form R(u, ux)x and we cover, for instance, the singular diffusion (|ux|pux)x, where p ≥ 0 is arbitrary. We investigate the existence, uniqueness and various properties of classical and non-classical travelling waves and of the kinetic function. The latter serves to characterize non-classical shock waves, via an additional algebraic constrain called a kinetic relation. We discover that p = ⅓ is a somewhat unexpected critical value. For p ≤ ⅓, we obtain properties that are qualitatively similar to those we established earlier for regular and linear diffusion. However, for p > ⅓, the behaviour of the kinetic function is very different, as, for instance, non-classical shocks can have arbitrary small strength. The behaviour of the kinetic function near the origin is carefully investigated and depends on whether p < ½, p = ½ or p > ½. In particular, in the special case of the cubic flux-function and for the regularization (|ux|pux)x with p = 0, ½ or 1, the kinetic function can be computed explicitly. When p = ½, the kinetic function is simply a linear function of its argument.

We study the behaviour of non-convex functionals singularly perturbed by a possibly oscillating inhomogeneous gradient term, in the spirit of the gradient theory of phase transitions. We show that a limit problem giving a sharp interface, as the perturbation vanishes, always exists, but may be inhomogeneous or anisotropic. We specialize this study when the perturbation oscillates periodically, highlighting three types of regimes, depending on the frequency of the oscillations. In the two extreme cases, a separation of scales effect is described.

For the family of truncations of the Gaussian Riesz transforms and Poisson integral we study their rate of convergence through the oscillation and variation operators. More precisely, we search for their Lp (dγ)-boundedness properties, where dγ denotes the Gauss measure. We achieve our results by looking at the oscillation and variation operators from a vector-valued point of view.

We introduce the notion of a viscosity solution for the first-order Hamilton–Jacobi equation, in the more general setting of manifolds, to obtain a weak KAM theory using only tools from partial differential equations. This work should be accessible to people with no prior knowledge of the subject.

Positive solutions of a Kirchhoff-type nonlinear elliptic equation with a non-local integral term on a bounded domain in ℝN, N ⩾ 1, are studied by using bifurcation theory. The parameter regions of existence, non-existence and uniqueness of positive solutions are characterized by the eigenvalues of a linear eigenvalue problem and a nonlinear eigenvalue problem. Local and global bifurcation diagrams of positive solutions for various parameter regions are obtained.

The regularity of the scaling profiles ψ to Smoluchowski’s coagulation equation is studied when the coagulation kernel K is given by K(x, y) = xλ + yλ with λ∈ (0, 1). More precisely, ψ is C1-smooth on (0,∞) and decays exponentially fast for large x. Furthermore, the singular behaviour of ψ(x) as x → 0 is identified, thus giving a rigorous proof of physical conjectures.

Homogenisation of the first-order Hamilton-Jacobi equations when H is periodic in the second variable, leads to an effective Hamiltonian H satisfying: uε converges, as ε → 0, to the solution u of ut + H(Du) = 0. In our first paper, we assumed that H is convex and we derived a variational formula giving H. In this second paper, we consider eikonal equations, i.e. H(p, x) = ½|p|2 – V(x). Using our variational formula, we compute explicitly the effective Hamiltonian in several cases, and we study precisely the lack of strict convexity for H (‘flat part’ around the origin).

The aim of the present paper is to establish some new integral inequalities of Opial type in two independent variables. Our results are the two independent variable generalizations of some of the inequalities recently established by the present author and in special cases yield the two independent variable analogue of the Opial inequality and its generalization given by G. S. Yang.

We introduce the notion of a perfect path for a monomial algebra. We classify indecomposable non-projective Gorenstein-projective modules over the given monomial algebra via perfect paths. We apply the classification to a quadratic monomial algebra and describe explicitly the stable category of its Gorenstein-projective modules.

We characterize bounded mean oscillation in terms of the boundedness of commutators of various bilinear singular integral operators with pointwise multiplication. In particular, we study commutators of a wide class of bilinear operators of convolution type, including bilinear Calderón–Zygmund operators and the bilinear fractional integral operators.

We consider the initial boundary value problem for the equations of one-dimensional nonlinear thermoelasticity in ℝ+; and prove a global existence-uniqueness theorem for small smooth data. The asymptotic behaviour is simultaneously obtained.

We study the existence and non-existence of classical solutions to a general Gierer—Meinhardt system with Dirichlet boundary condition. The main feature of this paper is that we are concerned with a model in which both the activator and the inhibitor have different sources given by general nonlinearities. Under some additional hypotheses and in the case of pure powers in nonlinearities, regularity and uniqueness of the solution in one dimension is also presented.

We study bifurcation problems in the presence of continuous groups of symmetries and obtain theorems on the existence and uniqueness of solutions. We also briefly consider some applications.

We study the dynamical behaviour, as t → ∞, of admissible weak solutions of the scalar balance law

with x ∊ ≡ ℝ/Lℤ, L > 0, 0 < t < ∞, and f(·) ∊ C2, g(·) ∊ C1. We assume that f(·) is strictly convex, while g(·) is of at most linear growth, has finitely many zeros and changes sign across them. We show that, if u(·,t) stays bounded in L∞(S1), as t → ∞, then it either converges to a constant state or approaches asymptotically a rotating wave, i.e. an admissible weak solution of (1.1) of the form ũ(x − ct), c ∈ ℝ. Hence, the asymptotic state of every bounded solution of (1.1) consists precisely of either an equilibrium or one time-periodic solution. Furthermore, each one of these two alternatives is characterised by the Conley indices of the critical points of the ordinary differential equation .

This paper deals with the Riemann problem for a partial differential equation's model arising in phase-transition dynamics and consisting of an hyperbolic–elliptic system of two conservation laws. First of all, we provide a complete description of all solutions of the Riemann problem that are consistent with the mathematical entropy inequality associated with the total energy of the system. Second, following Abeyaratne and Knowles, we impose a kinetic relation to determine the dynamics of subsonic phase boundaries. Based on the requirement that subsonic phase boundaries are preferred whenever available, we determine the corresponding wave curves associated with composite waves (shocks, rarefaction fans, phase boundaries). It turns out that even after the kinetic relation is imposed, the Riemann problem may admit up to two solutions. A nucleation criterion is necessary to select between a solution remaining in a single phase and a solution containing two phase boundaries. Alternatively, a strong assumption on the kinetic relation ensures that the Riemann solution is unique and depends continuously upon its initial data.

Matrices of this type are met with in the statistical technique known as Factorial Analysis (Thurstone, 1935; Thomson, 1939); there the nondiagonal elements rij(i≠j) are the correlation coefficients of certain tests and are given by observation. The diagonal entries of the “correlational matrix,” which is always non-negative definite, are originally all equal to unity, but, on the hypothesis which underlies the process of Factorial Analysis, it is permissible to diminish the diagonal entries arbitrarily provided the modified matrix is still non-negative definite, it being assumed that the amount which has been deducted from the diagonal cells is due to the variance of the specific factors, the investigation of which is not the primary aim of the theory.

The paper is concerned with the problem of a solitary wave moving with constant form and constant velocity c on the surface of an incompressible, inviscid fluid over a horizontal bottom. The motion is assumed to be two-dimensional and irrotational, and if h is the depth of the fluid at infinity and g the acceleration due to gravity, then the Froude number F is defined by

The result that F>1 has recently been proved by Amick and Toland by means of a long and complicated argument. Here we give a short and simple one.

This paper is devoted to a spectral description of wave propagation phenomena in conservative unbounded media, or, more precisely, the fact that a time-dependent wave can often be represented by a continuous superposition of time-harmonic waves. We are concerned here with the question of the perturbation of such a generalized eigenfunction expansion in the context of scattering problems: if such a property holds for a free situation, i.e. an unperturbed propagative medium, what does it become under perturbation, i.e. in the presence of scatterers? The question has been widely studied in many particular situations. The aim of this paper is to collect some of them in an abstract framework and exhibit sufficient conditions for a perturbation result. We investigate the physical meaning of these conditions which essentially consist in, on the one hand, a stable limiting absorption principle for the free problem, and on the other hand, a compactness (or short-range) property of the perturbed problem.

This approach is illustrated by the scattering of linear water waves by a floating body. The above properties are obtained with the help of integral representations, which allow us to deduce the asymptotic behaviour of time-harmonic waves from that of the Green function of the free problem. The results are not new: the main improvement lies in the structure of the proof, which clearly distinguishes the properties related to the free problem from those which involve the perturbation.

The groups of units of indefinite ternary quadratic forms with rational integer coefficients contain subgroups of index two which are isomorphic to Fuchsian groups and which, for zero forms, are commensurable with the classical modular group. This is used to obtain a family of forms whose groups are representatives of the conjugacy classes of maximal groups associated with zero forms. The signatures of the groups of the forms in this family are determined and it is shown that the group associated to any zero form is isomorphic to a subgroup of finite index in the group of one of three particular forms. This last result should be compared with the corresponding result by Mennicke on non-zero forms.
