The Nearby Young Moving Groups sample the critical age when primordial disks around stars complete their transformation into planetary systems with associated debris. Millimeter wavelengths provide direct access to cool material in these circumstellar disks. The high angular resolution of interferometry at these long wavelengths enables resolved observations of solids in an optically thin regime, as well as the thermal, chemical, and dynamical structure of gas, if present. In this contribution, I briefly review the evolving landscape of millimeter telescopes, with emphasis on the revolutionary capabilities of the new international Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and describe pertinent early science results.

Many theoretical models of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) predict that the X-ray corona, lying above the black hole, constitutes the base of the X-ray jet. Thus, by studying the exact geometry of the close black hole environment, we can pinpoint the launching site of the jet. Detection of negative X-ray reverberation time delays (i.e. soft band X-ray variations lagging behind the corresponding hard band X-ray variations) can yield significant information about the geometrical properties of the AGN, such as the location of the X-ray source, as well as the physical properties of the the black hole, such as its mass and spin. In the frame-work of the lamp-post geometry, I present the first systematic X-ray time-lag modelling results of an ensemble of 12 AGN, using a fully general relativistic (GR) ray tracing approach for the estimation of the systems' response functions. By combing these state-of-the art GR response models with statistically innovative fitting routines, I derive the geometrical layout of the close BH environment for each source, unveiling the position of the AGN jet-base.

We analyse the correlations between continuum properties and emission line equivalent widths of star-forming and narrow-line active galaxies from SDSS. We show that emission line strengths can be predicted reasonably well from PCA coefficients of the stellar continuum using local multiple linear regression. Since upcoming sky surveys will make broadband observations only, theoretical modelling of spectra will be essential to estimate physical properties of galaxies. Combined with stellar population synthesis models, our technique will help generate more accurate model spectra and mock catalogues of galaxies to be used to fit data from new surveys. We also show that, by combining PCA coefficients from the pure continuum and the emission lines, a plausible distinction can be made between weak AGNs and quiescent star-forming galaxies. Our method uses a support vector machine, and allows a more refined separation of active and star-forming galaxies than the empirical curve of Kauffmann et al. (2003).

In 1-D heat conductivity model, the YORP acceleration is proved to be independent of the asteroid's heat properties. Considering small structures on the surface of an asteroid breaks 1-D model. A new force appears, pulling the asteroid's surface parallel to itself. Its effect on the asteroid's rotation is called tangential YORP, or TYORP.

The coming decade will witness a deluge of data from next generation galaxy surveys such as the Square Kilometre Array and Euclid. How can we optimally and robustly analyse these data to maximise scientific returns from these surveys? Here we discuss recent work in developing both the conceptual and software frameworks for carrying out such analyses and their application to the dark matter halo mass function. We summarise what we have learned about the HMF from the last 10 years of precision CMB data using the open-source HMFcalc framework, before discussing how this framework is being extended to the full Halo Model.

Possibility of disintegration of proto-comet nucleus of sungraser comets in three zones of Solar System predicted by one of authors is considered. Testing of parameters of 118 split comets confirms the basic idea. Results of the statistical analysis of comet outbursts gave us additional argument in favor of this assumption. Almost twenty years have passed since, as a result of the search for host phases of isotopically unusual noble gases, the first discovery in 1987 of surviving pre-solar minerals (diamond and silicon carbide) in primitive meteorites. These were followed by others (graphite, refractory oxides, silicon nitride, and finally silicates) in the years since. Pre-solar grains occur in even higher abundance than in meteorites in interplanetary dust particles (IDPs). The result is a kind of ‘new astronomy’ based on the study of pre-solar condensates with all the methods available in modern analytical laboratories.

Galactic archaeology is the study of the history of star formation and chemical evolution in the Milky Way, based on present-day stellar populations. Studies of young stars are a key anchor point for Galactic archaeology, since quantities like the initial mass function and the star formation rate can be studied directly in young clusters and star forming regions. Conversely, massive spectroscopic Galactic archaeology surveys can be used as a data source for young star studies.

We present the results of a theoretical study on the influence of dust particles on the polarization properties of the radiation that propagates along the jet in AGNs. First, a model for describing the interaction of dust particles, in addition to the electrons and ions, with electromagnetic radiation in a magneto-active plasma has been developed. From here, the contribution of dust particles to the Faraday rotation of the plane of polarization of the electric vector can be deduced. This model is evaluated for the outer region of the jet where the presence of dust particles are assumed, the magnetic field is weak and the electron density is low. Our results show that the dust particles give a significant contribution to the linear Faraday rotation measure.

We present the KMOS (K-band Multi-Object Spectrograph) Cluster and VIRIAL (VLT IRIFU Absorption Line) Guaranteed Time Observation (GTO) programs. KMOS provides 24 arms each feeding an integral field unit (14×14 spaxels of 0.2″ pixels) for IZ, YJ, H and K band near infrared (NIR) medium resolution spectroscopy (R ∼ 3500). Targets are selected from a 7.2′ diameter patrol field. Ultra-deep spectroscopy of ∼ 80 early-type cluster galaxies (∼ 20hr on source) and ∼ 200 (∼ 10hr on source) early-type field galaxies at 1 < z < 2 will dramatically improve the situation at z > 1 for which measurements of stellar velocity dispersions and absorption indices are limited to a few, often relatively young passively evolving galaxies (e.g. Bezanson 2013). In ESO Periods P92 and P93, 15 nights worth of data has been collected for KMOS-Clusters and 6 nights for VIRIAL: this will be supplemented with more data in upcoming semesters. All galaxies have multiband HST imaging including existing or upcoming WFC3 IR imaging, providing stellar mass maps and sizes. Combined with our dispersion measurements, this will allow us to examine the fundamental plane and the dynamical mass of a large sample of z > 1 galaxies for the first time, for both cluster and field galaxies.

In the context of the first light of MUSE, Integral Field Unit (IFU) spectrograph of second generation installed recently at VLT, we compute mock IFU Lyman-alpha (lyα) observations of a virtual dwarf galaxy, to help understanding and interpreting forthcoming observations. This study is an extension of the work carried out in Verhamme et al. (2012), where we studied the spatially integrated lyα properties of a dwarf galaxy. With the same data, we now investigate the spatial variations of lyα spectra.

In the last decade a new generation of telescopes and sensors has allowed the production of a very large amount of data and astronomy has become a data-rich science. New automatic methods largely based on machine learning are needed to cope with such data tsunami. We present some results in the fields of photometric redshifts and galaxy classification, obtained using the MLPQNA algorithm available in the DAMEWARE (Data Mining and Web Application Resource) for the SDSS galaxies (DR9 and DR10). We present PhotoRApToR (Photometric Research Application To Redshift): a Java based desktop application capable to solve regression and classification problems and specialized for photo-z estimation.

The discovery of relativistic jets and superluminal sources associated with accreting X-ray binaries in the Galaxy opened new ways of investigating the physics of outflows from compact objects. The short timescales and relatively large angular sizes of Galactic jets allow to probe the physics of relativistic outflows to unprecedented details. In this article I discuss results of recent modelling of Galactic jets, covering both radiative and dynamical aspects, which can shed light on different features of their extragalactic cousins.

We present analysis of the photometric data of the distant comet 29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann-1, obtained at the 6-m BTA telescope (SAO RAS, Russia) and at the 2-meter telescope Zeiss-2000 (ICAMER, KB). The comet shows significant jets activity at large heliocentric distances, beyond the zone of water ice sublimation. Various digital filters were applied to increase the contrast of the jets and separate them. The rotation period of the nucleus was derived using cross-correlation method. The value of the rotation period is 12.1 ± 1.2 days for observations made in 2008 and 11.7 ± 1.5 days for observations made in 2009.

X-ray surveys are well suited to detect, identify and study young stars based on their high levels of magnetic activity and thus X-ray brightness. The eROSITA instrument onboard the Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) satellite will perform an X-ray all-sky survey that surpasses existing data by a sensitivity increase of more than an order of magnitude. The 4 yr survey is expected to detect more than half a million stars and stellar systems in X-rays.

The purpose of meteor observations in INASAN is the study of meteor showers, as the elements of the migrant substance of the Solar System, and estimation of risk of hazardous collisions of spacecrafts with the particles of streams. Therefore we need to analyze the meteor events with brightness of up to 8 m, which stay in meteoroid streams for a long time and can be a hazardous for the spacecraft. The results of our single station TV observations of autumn meteor showers for the period from 2006 to 2008 are presented. The high-sensitive hybrid camera (the system with coupled of the Image Intensifier) FAVOR with limiting magnitude for meteors about 9m. . .10m in the field of view 20 × 18 was used for observations. In 2006-2008 from October to November more than 3 thousand of meteors were detected, 65% from them have the brightness from 6m to 9m. The identification with autumn meteor showers (Orionids, Taurids, Draconids, Leonids) was carried out. In order to estimate the density of the influx of meteor matter to the Earth for these meteor showers the Index of meteor activity (IMA) was calculated. The IMA distribution for the period 2006 - 2008 is given. The distributions of autumn meteor showers (the meteors with brightness of up to 8 m) by stellar magnitude from 2006 to 2008 are also presented.

Theoretical and observational work show that jets from AGN can trigger star formation. However, in the Milky Way the first -and so far- only clear case of relativistic jets inducing star formation has been found in the surroundings of the microquasar GRS 1915+105. Here we summarize the multiwavelength observations of two compact star formation IRAS sources axisymmetrically located and aligned with the position angle of the sub-arcsec relativistic jets from the stellar black hole binary GRS 1915+105 (Mirabel & Rodríguez 1994). The observations of these two star forming regions at centimeter (Mirabel & Rodríguez 1998), millimeter and infrared (Chaty et al. 2001) wavelengths had suggested -despite the large uncertainties in the distances a decade ago- that the jets from GRS 1915+105 are triggering along the radio jet axis the formation of massive stars in a radio lobe of bow shock structure. Recently, Reid et al. (2014) found that the jet source and the IRAS sources are at the same distance, enhancing the evidence for the physical association between the jets from GRS 1915+105 and star formation in the IRAS sources. We conclude that as jets from AGN, jets from microquasars can trigger the formation of massive stars, but at distances of a few tens of parsecs. Although star formation induced by microquasar jets may not be statistically significant in the Milky Way, jets from stellar black holes may have been important to trigger star formation during the re-ionization epoch of the universe (Mirabel et al. 2011). Because of the relative proximity of GRS 1915+105 and the associated star forming regions, they may serve as a nearby laboratory to gain insight into the physics of jet-trigger star formation elsewhere in the universe.

We study the possibilities of using line-of-sight projected luminosity density and filament probability fields to find the best locations in the sky to attempt to observe the elusive Warm-Hot Intergalactic Matter (WHIM). We calculate galaxy luminosity fields on a regular grid and then project those to the plane of sky. Column densities are then found by integrating along multiple lines of sight. We also create the projections of the filament probability fields. The results are presented as sky maps of the potentially suitable areas and the corresponding fractions of sky coverage.

Each component of a galaxy plays its own unique role in regulating the galaxy's evolution. In order to understand how galaxies form and evolve, it is therefore crucial to study the distribution and properties of each of the various components, and the links between them, both radially and vertically. The latter is only possible in edge-on systems. We present the HEROES project, which aims to investigate the 3D structure of the interstellar gas, dust, stars and dark matter in a sample of 7 massive early-type spiral galaxies based on a multi-wavelength data set including optical, NIR, FIR and radio data.

We present the results of two 2.3 μm near-infrared (NIR) radial velocity (RV) surveys to detect exoplanets around 36 nearby and young M dwarfs. We use the CSHELL spectrograph (R ~ 46,000) at the NASA InfraRed Telescope Facility (IRTF), combined with an isotopic methane absorption gas cell for common optical path relative wavelength calibration. We have developed a sophisticated RV forward modeling code that accounts for fringing and other instrumental artifacts present in the spectra. With a spectral grasp of only 5 nm, we are able to reach long-term radial velocity dispersions of ~20–30 m s−1 on our survey targets.
