Oldsite (IMA2021-075), ideally K2Fe2+[(UO2)(SO4)2]2(H2O)8, is a new uranyl sulfate mineral found on specimens from the North Mesa Mine group, Temple Mountain, San Rafael district, Emery County, Utah, USA. It is a secondary mineral occurring with alum-(K), halotrichite, metavoltine, quartz, römerite, stanleyite, sulphur, szomolnokite and mathesiusite. It forms rectangular blades flattened on {010} and elongated on [001], reaching ~0.3 mm in length. Crystals are yellow in colour, transparent with a vitreous lustre; the streak is very pale yellow. The mineral is non-fluorescent. Cleavage is excellent on {100} and perfect on {010}; the Mohs hardness is ~2. Crystals are brittle with irregular, splintery fracture. The density measured by flotation in a mixture of methylene iodide and toluene is 3.31 g⋅cm–3; the calculated density is 3.298 g⋅cm–3 for the empirical formula and 3.330 g⋅cm–3 for the ideal formula. Oldsite is biaxial (+), with α = 1.552(2), β = 1.556(2) and γ = 1.588(2) (measured in white light). The 2V measured directly on a spindle stage is 37(1)°; the calculated 2V is 39.6°. Dispersion is r < v, moderate. The optical orientation is X = b, Y = a and Z = c. The mineral is non-pleochroic. The empirical formula of oldsite (on the basis of 28 O apfu) is K1.93(Fe2+0.53Zn0.31V3+0.09Mg0.08)Σ1.02[(U0.98O2)(S1.01O4)2]2(H2O)8. The Raman spectrum is dominated by the vibrations of SO42– and UO22+ units. Oldsite is orthorhombic, Pmn21, a = 12.893(3), b = 8.276(2), c = 11.239(2) Å, V = 1199.2(5) Å3 and Z = 2. The five strongest powder X-ray diffraction lines are [dobs, Å (I, %) (hkl) ]: 8.29 (59) (010), 6.47 (82) (200), 5.10 (62) (210), 4.65 (100) (012, 211) and 3.332 (55) (022, 221). The crystal structure of oldsite was refined from single-crystal X-ray data to R = 0.0258 for 2676 independent observed reflections, with Iobs > 3σ(I). Oldsite is an Fe2+ analogue of svornostite; its crystal structure is based upon infinite chains of uranyl-sulfate polyhedra, which comprises pentagonal UO7 bipyramids sharing four of their equatorial vertices with sulfate tetrahedra such that each tetrahedron is linked to two uranyl bipyramids to form an infinite chain (the free, non-linking equatorial vertex of the uranyl bipyramid is an H2O group). The broader discussion on the origin and composition of uranyl sulfate minerals is made. The new mineral name honours American mineralogist, Dr. Travis A. Olds for his contribution to uranium mineralogy.

A high-grade ore sample from the Cu–Zn–Au Photo Lake volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit (Flin Flon–Snow Lake greenstone belt, Manitoba, Canada) contains a Bi–Ag sulfo-selenide with a composition situated approximately in the middle of the S–Se substitution range (Se ≈ 0.86 apfu and S ≈ 1.05 apfu). These new data, combined with a literature compilation of all publicly available matildite and bohdanowiczite compositional data, reveal a nearly complete range of S–Se substitution between these two minerals, with only the section between BiAgSe0.78S1.18 and BiAgSe0.25S1.75 – about a quarter of the complete S–Se range – not yet documented. These observations suggest that a complete solid-solution series between matildite and bohdanowiczite, as previously suspected, might exist and in a manner similar to the galena–clausthalite complete solid-solution series.

Deynekoite, Ca9□Fe3+(PO4)7 (R3c, a = 10.3516(3)Å, c = 37.1599(17)Å, V = 3448.4(3)Å3 and Z = 6), a new mineral of the merrillite group was found in the contact facies of paralava of the Hatrurim Complex in the Daba-Siwaqa pyrometamorphic rock field, Jordan. The paralava, consisting of diopside, tridymite, anorthite, wollastonite and fluorapatite, is enriched in Fe-bearing phosphides and phosphates at the contact with the altered country rock. Cristobalite overgrowing tridymite has a fish-scales texture indicating that temperature of paralava could have reached 1500°C. Deynekoite with empirical formula (Ca8.90Na0.11K0.02)Σ9.03(Fe3+0.62Mg0.30Al0.05)Σ0.97P6.98V5+0.05O27.70(OH)0.30 forms transparent, light-yellow or light-brown grains up to 30–40 μm in size. Microhardness of deynekoite, VHN25 = 319(29) kg/mm2, corresponds to Mohs hardness = 4.5. Its density was calculated as 3.09 g⋅cm–3 on the basis of its empirical composition and structural data. Deynekoite is uniaxial (−), its refractive indices are ω = 1.658(3), ɛ = 1.652(3) (λ = 589 nm), and pleochroism is not observed. The formation of phosphides on the boundary of the paralava and country rock is connected with carbothermal reductive reactions and realised at temperatures above 1300°С. With decreasing temperature and increasing oxygen activity, phosphides are replaced by Fe2+-bearing phosphates. Deynekoite, which contains Fe3+ (substituting for Fe2+-phosphates) and a small amount of water, formed at temperatures of 600–800°C.

An investigation of sample 41647 from the Platinum Placer of Ugol'nyi Ruchei, Norilsk Cu–Ni deposit, Russia, stored in the systematic collection of the Fersman Mineralogical Museum, revealed that it contained a mineral that can be identified as the original stannopalladinite described in 1947. As the literature information on the latter is controversial, the mineral was re-investigated using modern analytical techniques. Stannopalladinite occurs as spherical and ovoid-shaped grains up to 0.08 mm, closely intergrown with tetraferroplatinum as part of flattened, prismatic crystals up to 6 mm long. The micro-indentation hardness of stannopalladinite (VHN, 30 g load) is 244 kg/mm2 (range 233–266, n = 4), corresponding to a Mohs hardness of 4. The calculated density is 9.781 g/cm3. In reflected light, stannopalladinite is pale pink. The bireflectance is noticeable only in oil immersion. In crossed nicols the mineral exhibits strong anisotropy with colour effects changing from reddish purple to greyish blue and polysynthetic twinning of grains. The reflectance curves show distinct anomalous dispersion. The chemical composition (wt.%, electron microprobe data, mean of 11 analyses) is: Cu 8.48, Pd 61.21, Pt 0.89, Sn 25.87, Pb 3.70, total 100.15. The empirical formula calculated on the basis of 4 atoms per formula unit is (Pd2.42Cu0.56Pt0.02)Σ3.00(Sn0.92Pb0.08)Σ1.00. The ideal chemical formula of stannopalladinite is therefore proposed as (Pd,Cu)3Sn instead of Pd3Sn2 used in the official IMA List of Minerals. The strongest powder X-ray diffraction lines are [dobs, Å (I, %) (hkl) ]: 2.292 (42) (231), 2.166 (100) (331), 2.034 (10) (710), 1.916 (15) (141) and 1.851 (15) (630). The powder X-ray data are indexed in the orthorhombic unit cell with a = 14.634(2), b = 8.5253(6), c = 4.5946(3) Å and V = 573.24(7) Å3 (Z = 8). Stannopalladinite can be reliably identified among all other minerals belonging to the binary Pd–Sn and ternary Pd–Cu–Sn systems by a combination of chemical, optical and X-ray data.

Carbonatites are igneous carbonate rocks. They are the main source of the rare earth elements (REE) that are essential in low carbon and high technology applications. Exploration targeting and mine planning would both benefit from a better understanding of the processes that create the almost ubiquitous alkaline and REE-bearing metasomatic aureoles in the surrounding country rocks.

Using scanning electron microscopy and whole-rock geochemistry, we investigated the composition and mineralogy of the fenite aureoles developed around the REE-poor Chilwa Island carbonatite and the REE-rich Kangankunde carbonatite, which intrude similar country rocks in the Chilwa Alkaline Province of Southern Malawi. Although common characteristics and trends in their mineralogy and composition may be typical of fenites in general, there are significant differences in their petrography and petrogenesis. For example, the mineralogically diverse breccia at Kangankunde contrasts with the intensely altered potassic breccia of Chilwa Island. This might be caused by differing sequences of fluids expelled from the carbonatites into the aureoles. The main REE-bearing mineral in fenite is different at each complex, and reflects the characteristic REE-bearing mineral of the main carbonatite: fluorapatite at Chilwa Island; and monazite at Kangankunde. Each fenite has distinctive mineral assemblages, in which the relative abundance of the REE-bearing minerals appears to be determined by the mineralogy of their respective host carbonatites.

At both localities, the REE minerals in fenite are less enriched in lanthanum and cerium than their equivalents in carbonatite, a characteristic that we attribute to REE fractionation within fluids in the aureole.

Identifying the mineral assemblages present in fenite and understanding the sequence of alkaline and mineralising fluid events could therefore be useful in predicting whether a fenite is associated with a REE-rich carbonatite. Detailed studies of other aureoles would be required to assess the reliability of these characteristics.

The criteria for the definition of a new mineral species currently used by the Commission on New Minerals Nomenclature and Classification (CNMNC) of the International Mineralogical Association are critically examined. In particular, the rule of the dominant constituent can violate the laws of conservation of electric charge. A series of additional rules: (1) valency-imposed double site-occupancy; (2) the dominant-valency rule; and (3) the site-total-charge approach, have been developed in an attempt to correct this error. However, none of these rules can overcome the fundamental flaw introduced by the rule of the dominant constituent, and the chemical formulae resulting from application of these rules can violate the requirements of an end-member, particularly that of electroneutrality. As a result, the IMA–CNMNC rules cannot derive end-member formulae for some groups of minerals, giving rise to many ad hoc decisions in defining distinct mineral species.

In this communication we present a brief response to Hawthorne (2023) who, in a paper in volume 87, doi.org/10.1180/mgm.2023.8 (this journal), claims evidence for violations of the electroneutrality principle in mineral formulae derived through IMA–CNMNC procedures: i.e. the dominant-constituent rule, the valency-imposed double site-occupancy, the dominant-valency rule, and the site-total-charge approach (STC).

His statement is not correct as the STC method is based on the end-member definition; thus, it cannot violate the requirements of an end-member, particularly the laws of conservation of electric charge. The STC was developed to address the shortcomings in the previous IMA–CNMNC procedures.

The real question is: which method to use to define an end-member formula? Currently, there are two approaches: (1) STC, which first identifies the dominant end-member charge arrangement and then leads to the dominant end-member composition; (2) the dominant end-member approach.

Ferro-ferri-katophorite (IMA2016–008), ideally Na(NaCa)(Fe2+4Fe3+)(Si7Al)O22(OH)2, was found as xenocrysts up to 3 cm long and replacement rims around aegirine–augite in silicocarbonatite dykes cropping out in the Sierra de Maz, La Rioja province, NW Argentina. Ferro-ferri-katophorite is black and has vitreous lustre and a pale green streak. The new mineral is brittle, with perfect {110} cleavage and has a Mohs hardness of 6. The measured density is 3.32(1) g/cm3. In plane-polarised light it is strongly pleochroic, X = light greenish brown, Y = dark greyish brown and Z = dark greyish olive green. Absorption (very strong) is Z > Y > X. The orientation is: Z ∥ b, and X forms a small angle with [001]. Ferro-ferri-katophorite is biaxial (–), with α = 1.688(3), β = 1.697(3), γ = 1.698(3) and 2V(calc) = 36.7°. It is monoclinic, space group C2/m, a = 9.8270(7), b = 18.0300(8), c = 5.316(4) Å, β = 104.626(4)°, V = 911.4(6) Å3 and Z = 2. The strongest five lines in the powder X-ray diffraction pattern [d in Å (I)(hkl)] are: 8.416(100)(110), 3.135(50)(310), 2.815(26)(330), 2.720(18)(151) and 1.4422(15)($\bar{6}$61). The chemical composition is SiO2 43.08, TiO2 2.76, ZrO2 0.15, Al2O3 8.76, V2O3 0.07, Fe2O3 9.28, FeO 13.85, MnO 0.43, MgO 6.88, CaO 6.58, ZnO 0.06, Na2O 5.55, K2O 1.18, Cl 0.01, H2O calc 1.36, total 99.95 wt.%. The formula unit (confirmed by single-crystal structural analysis) is (Na0.74K0.23)Σ0.97(Ca1.08Na0.91Mn0.01)Σ2.00(Fe2+1.78Mg1.57Fe3+1.07Ti4+0.32Al0.19Mn2+0.04Zr0.01V3+0.01Zn0.01)Σ5.00(Si6.61Al1.39)Σ8.00O22(OH1.59O0.61)Σ2.00. Aluminium is strongly ordered at the T(1) site. Ferro-ferri-katophorite is the 9th species carrying the katophorite root name and is related to katophorite by the Fe2+ + Fe3+ → Mg2+ + Al3+ substitution.
