Minasgeraisite-(Y) is discredited on the basis of it being an ordered intermediate between datolite and hingganite-(Y) (IMA-CNMNC Proposal 23-F). An idealised formula is (Ca2Y2)□2(Be2B2)Si4O16(OH)4, which corresponds to Ca2□B2Si2O8(OH)2 (datolite) + Y2□Be2Si2O8(OH)2 (hingganite-(Y)). The type material is rich in Bi, the Bi-richest portion yet discovered from the type locality is shown to be an intermediate member between datolite, hingganite-(Y) and a hypothetical end-member phase yet to be found of composition Bi2□Be2Si2O8(OH)2. Minasgeraisite-(Y) has a different space group to datolite and hingganite-(Y). This lowering of symmetry to an acentric triclinic system is caused by different element occupancies on the A site of the gadolinite supergroup structure, which for minasgeraisite-(Y) becomes four individual sites. Such an order–disorder of elements is not considered as species-defining criteria despite the change in space group. Therefore, minasgeraisite-(Y) is discredited.

Wortupaite (IMA2022–107) is a new hydrated magnesium nickel tellurite mineral with a zemannite-like structure, described from the Wortupa gold mine, South Australia, Australia. Wortupaite forms needles up to 25 μm in length, generally clustered and sometimes in blocky masses of shorter (10‒15 μm) crystals. Wortupaite is found growing on melonite, from which the component nickel and tellurium are derived, and is associated with calcite. The strongest powder diffraction lines are [dobsÅ(Iobs)(hkl)]: 8.059 (93) (100), 4.034 (92) (200), 2.832 (43) (211 and 121), 2.769 (100) (202) and 1.920 (45) (213 and 123). The empirical formula of wortupaite as determined by electron probe microanalysis is (Mg0.57Ni0.39Mn0.04)Σ1(Ni2+1.87Fe3+0.13)Σ2(Te4+O3)3⋅3H2O, simplified to the ideal formula of MgNi2+2(Te4+O3)3⋅3H2O with H2O content calculated from the crystal structure. The average crystal structure of wortupaite was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction with synchrotron radiation (R1 = 0.0558 for 100 independent reflections). Wortupaite is hexagonal, crystallising in the space group P63/m, with a = 9.2215(13) Å, c = 7.5150(15) Å, V = 553.43(19) Å3 and Z = 2. Wortupaite has a microporous structure, with the negatively charged zemannite-like framework formed by Te4+O3 trigonal pyramids and Ni2+O6 octahedra. For charge balance, Mg2+ and Ni2+ dominant sites are assumed to be located on central sites in the channels, coordinated by 6 H2O groups. An OW site was refined around the Mg2+ dominant site, but OW position(s) were not locatable around the Ni2+ dominant site. A discussion of the different models for crystallographic arrangement of channel species is provided, taking into account possible Fourier truncation effects. Unlike the other four minerals with zemannite-like structures which have a near 50% split of divalent and trivalent framework cations, wortupaite is the first natural phase to have only divalent cations in the framework sites.

Zaykovite, ideally Rh3Se4, is a new mineral, the first natural rhodium selenide. It was discovered in the assemblages of platinum-group minerals from the Kazan gold placer, South Urals, Russia. The mineral occurs as crystals up to 40 μm in size within the grains of Pt3Fe alloy, in association with unnamed Pd–Sb–Te phase and Au–Pd alloy. In reflected light, zaykovite has a grey colour with bluish-greenish tint; it shows weak bireflectance and anisotropy. Reflectance values [Rmax/Rmin (%) for COM approved wavelengths (nm)] are: 30.1/29.3(470), 32.2/31.0(546), 33.4/32.0(589) and 35.1/33.7(650). The chemical composition corresponds to the empirical formula (Rh2.26Pt0.46Ir0.25Ru0.01Pd0.01Fe0.01)Σ3.00(Se2.77S1.21Te0.02)Σ4.00 Zaykovite is monoclinic, space group C2/m, a = 10.877(1), b = 11.192(1), c = 6.4796(6) Å, β = 108.887(2)°, V = 746.3(1) Å3, Z = 6 and Dcalc = 8.32 g cm–1. The crystal structure has been solved and refined to R1 = 0.016 based on 858 unique observed reflections. The strongest lines of the powder X-ray diffraction pattern [d(Å), (I), (hkl)] are: 5.43(37)($\bar{1}$11), 3.275(75)(310), 3.199(100)($\bar{1}$31), 3.061(87)(002), 2.568(62)(400), 2.545(41)(041), 3.413(34)($\bar{2}$41) and 1.697(34)(441). Zaykovite is a Se analogue of kingstonite, Rh3S4. A continuous series of solid solutions between kingstonite and zaykovite was encountered in the samples from the Kazan placer. The possible sources of this unique Rh–Se mineralisation in the South Urals could be serpentinised dunite–harzburgite or gabbro–clinopyroxenite–dunite complexes in the vicinity.

Argentotetrahedrite-(Cd), Ag6(Cu4Cd2)Sb4S13, has been approved as a new mineral species by the Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification of the International Mineralogical Association using samples from Rudno nad Hronom, Slovak Republic. It occurs as anhedral grains up to 30 μm in size, steel-grey to black in colour, with a metallic lustre, in association with greenockite and other tetrahedrite-group minerals [argentotetrahedrite-(Zn) and tetrahedrite-(Zn)], earlier base-metal minerals, Ag sulfides and sulfosalts (acanthite, pyrargyrite and polybasite) and later galena. Argentotetrahedrite-(Cd) is isotropic, grey in colour, with a creamy tint and rapidly (tens of minutes) tarnishes to orange–brown. Reflectance data for Commission on Ore Mineralogy (COM) wavelengths in air are [λ (nm), R (%)]: 470, 30.4; 546, 30.3; 589, 30.3; and 650, 28.7. The chemical formula of the samples studied, recalculated on the basis of ΣMe = 16 atoms per formula unit, is: (Ag3.28Cu2.72)Ʃ6.00[Cu4(Cd1.68Fe0.27Zn0.16)]Ʃ6.11(Sb3.71As0.15)Ʃ3.86S12.79. Argentotetrahedrite-(Cd) is cubic, I$\bar{4}$3m, with a = 10.65(2) Å, V = 1208(4) Å3 and Z = 2. Argentotetrahedrite-(Cd) is isotypic with other members of the tetrahedrite group. The structural relationship between argentotetrahedrite-(Cd) and other members of the freibergite series are discussed and previous findings of this species are briefly reviewed.

Vanadium is the dominant trace element and chromophore in tanzanite, the most valued gemmological variety of zoisite. The structure of zoisite–tanzanite was obtained by structural refinement to assess the vanadium location in the zoisite structure. However, the small V content in tanzanite evidenced by electron microprobe and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry limits the exact determination of the V position in the zoisite structure. Structural refinement revealed that the average bond length of the less distorted M1,2O6 octahedron is below 1.90 Å, and M3O6 has slightly longer bonds with an average of ca. 1.96 Å. The M1,2 site is slightly overbonded with a bond-valence sum (BVS) of 3.03 vu, whereas M3 is slightly underbonded (BVS = 2.78 vu). Optical absorption spectra revealed that most V is trivalent, but a small portion is probably in a four-valent state. Therefore, crystal field Superposition Model and Bond-Valence Model calculations were applied based on several necessary assumptions: (1) V occupies octahedral sites; and (2) it can occur in two oxidation states, V3+ or V4+. Crystal field Superposition Model calculations from the optical spectra indicated that V3+ prefers occupying the M1,2 site; the preference of V4+ from the present data was impossible to determine. Bond-Valence Model calculations revealed no unambiguous preference for V3+, although simple bond-length calculation suggests the preference of the M3 site. However, it is quite straightforward that the M1,2 site is better suitable for V4+. If the possible octahedral distortion is considered, the M1,2O6 octahedron is subject to a smaller change in distortion if occupied by V3+ than the M3O6 octahedron. Consequently, considering the results of both the crystal field Superposition Model and Bond-Valence Model calculations, we assume that both V3+ and V4+ prefer the M1,2 site.

Bystrite is redefined as a four-layer cancrinite-group mineral with the four-layer Losod-type framework and the end-member formula Na7Ca(Al6Si6O24)S52–Cl–. The mineral is known only at the Malo–Bystrinskoe gem lazurite deposit, Baikal Lake area, Siberia, Russia. The associated minerals are calcite, lazurite, sodalite, fluorapatite, phlogopite, diopside, dolomite and plagioclase. Bystrite is brittle, with the Mohs hardness of 5 and distinct cleavage on {10$\bar{1}$0}. The yellow colour of bystrite is due to the presence of S52– anions occurring in Losod (LOS) cages of the aluminosilicate framework with the ABAC stacking sequence. Measured and calculated density is, respectively, 2.43(1) and 2.412 g cm–3 for the holotype and 2.42(1) and 2.428 g cm–3 for the cotype sample. Bystrite is uniaxial (+), ɛ = 1.660(2) and ω = 1.584(2). The mineral was characterised by infrared and Raman spectra. The empirical formulae of the holotype and cotype samples are Na6.97K0.04Ca0.98(Si6.03Al5.97O24)(S52–)0.93[(SO42–)0.15Cl0.83] and Na6.75K0.04Ca1.11(Si6.09Al5.91O24)(S52–)1.04[(HS–)0.17Cl0.85], respectively. Bystrite is trigonal, space group P31c. The unit-cell parameters are: a = 12.8527(6) Å, c = 10.6907(5) Å, V = 1529.4(1) Å3 and Z = 2. The strongest lines of the powder X-ray diffraction pattern [d, Å (I, %) (hkl)] are: 4.821 (32) (102), 3.915 (38) (211), 3.712 (100) (300), 3.307 (50) (212), 2.782 (18) (400), 2.692 (22) (401), 2.673 (30) (004) and 2.468 (23) (402). Isomorphism and genesis of bystrite-type minerals is discussed. Bystrite and its K,HS-analogue sulfhydrylbystrite, Na5K2Ca(Al6Si6O24)S52–(HS)–, are indicators of highly reducing conditions.

Intracrystalline distribution of ferrous and ferric iron within pumpellyites (VIIW8VIX4VIY8IVZ12O56–n(OH)n, Z = 1) from low-grade metamorphic green rocks of the Kanogawa unit in the Northern Chichibu Belt, Hijikawa district, western Shikoku, Japan, was investigated using electron microprobe analysis, X-ray Rietveld refinement, and 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopic analysis to verify the regularity of the distribution of Fe within the octahedral X and Y sites in pumpellyite and its effect on the pumpellyite structure. Two Fe-rich pumpellyite samples, labelled CLW and CHG, with average total Fe2O3 of 10.01±1.69 and 16.07±1.08 wt.%, respectively, were separated from the rock samples. The site occupancies at the X and Y sites in the CLW and CHG pumpellyites, refined using powder X-ray diffraction data, are X[Mg0.298Fe0.298(5)Al0.405]Y[Fe0.191Al0.809] and X[Mg0.244Fe0.42(1)Al0.34]Y[Fe0.32Al0.68], respectively. The Fe2+:Fe3+ ratio of the CLW pumpellyite, determined using Mössbauer spectroscopy, is 12(1):88(3). By combining the average chemical composition data, the site occupancies at the X and Y sites, and the Fe2+:Fe3+ ratio of the CLW pumpellyite, the chemical formulae of CLW and CHG pumpellyites are constructed as (Ca7.96K0.02Na0.01)Σ7.99(Mg1.19Mn2+0.09Fe2+0.39Fe3+0.71Al1.62)Σ4.00(Al6.47Fe3+1.50V0.02Ti0.01)Σ8.00Si12.26O43.33(OH)12.67 and (Ca8.01K0.01)Σ8.02(Mg0.97Mn2+0.02Fe2+0.63Fe3+1.03Al1.19)Σ4.01(Al5.44Fe3+2.55V0.01)Σ8.00Si12.02O42.69OH)13.31, respectively, implying that the proper name of both pumpellyites is pumpellyite-(Al). The intracrystalline distribution coefficients of Fe3+ versus Al between the X and Y sites, KD = (Fe3+/Al)X/(Fe3+/Al)Y, are 1.62 and 1.90 for the CLW and CHG pumpellyites, respectively, implying stronger X-site preference of Fe3+ than Al3+. In the CHG pumpellyite, where the Fe contents at the X and Y sites are higher than in the CLW pumpellyite, the mean <X–O> and <Y–O> distances are 2.06 and 1.98 Å, respectively, which are larger than <X–O> = 2.040 and <Y–O> = 1.944 Å in the CLW pumpellyite. The unit-cell parameters of the CHG pumpellyite are a = 8.8672(3), b = 5.9562(2), c = 19.1899(6) Å, β = 97.473(2)° with V = 1004.9(2) Å3 and are larger than those of the CLW pumpellyite, a = 8.8456(4), b = 5.9393(2), c = 19.1613(8) Å, β = 97.461(3)° with V = 998.14(7) Å3.

Aluminotaipingite-(CeCa), (Ce6Ca3)Al(SiO4)3[SiO3(OH)]4F3, is a new member of the cerite-supergroup minerals, whose general chemical formula is A9XM[TO3Ø]7Z3, (A = REE, Ca, Sr, Na and □; X = □, Ca, Na and Fe2+; M = Mg, Fe2+, Fe3+, Al and Mn; T = Si and P; Ø = O and OH; Z = □, OH and F). It was found in cavities of a leucogranitic orthogneiss at the Casette quarry, Montoso, Bagnolo Piemonte, Cuneo Province, Piedmont, Italy. Crystals of aluminotaipingite-(CeCa) are light pink to pink, transparent or semi-transparent, with a vitreous lustre. It forms pyramidal crystals up to 0.07 mm in size and observed forms are {0 0 1}, {1 0 $\bar{2}$}. The tenacity is brittle, no distinct cleavage is observed and the fracture is uneven. The mineral does not fluoresce in long- or short-wave ultraviolet light. The streak is white. Hardness (Mohs) = 5. The calculated density is 4.476 g cm–3.

The mineral is trigonal, space group R3c, with a = 10.658(3), c = 37.865(9) Å, V = 3725(2) Å3 and Z = 6. The eight strongest powder X-ray diffraction lines are [dobs, Å (I, %) (h k l)]: 8.38(29)(0 1 2), 4.499(28)(2 0 2), 3.282(41)(2 1 4), 2.936(100)(0 2 10), 2.816(51)(1 2 8), 2.669(37)(2 2 0), 2.207 (29)(3 0 12) and 1.935(35)(2 3 8). The structure was refined to R =0.0306 for 2297 reflections with I >2σ(I). The crystal structure of aluminotaipingite-(CeCa) contains two nine-fold coordinated sites (A1 and A2), which are occupied mainly by lanthanides, and a third nine-fold coordinated A3 site containing almost equal amounts of lanthanides and Ca. The X site is vacant and at the octahedral M site aluminium prevails over Fe3+. Among the three independent T sites, T2 belongs to a (SiO4)4– anion, whereas T1 and T3 belong to (SiO3OH)3– anions. Fluorine is involved in coordination with the A1 and A3 sites.

Two silesiaite crystals, one from Szklarska Poręba, Poland (type locality), and the other from Häiviäntien, Finland, were studied with electron-probe microanalysis, Raman spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystals have the following compositions normalised to 13 O2– + 1 (OH)– anions: Ca2.001(2)[(Sn1.105(6)Zr0.009(1))Σ1.114(Fe3+0.523(78)Sc0.185(62)Al0.070(14))Σ0.779(Fe2+0.065(12)Mn2+0.041(5)Mg0.003(3))Σ0.110]Σ2.003(Si3.997(2)O13OH), and Ca2.006(8)[(Sn1.110(18)Ti0.006(3))Σ1.107(Fe3+0.648(50)Al0.063(11))Σ0.710(Fe2+0.140(30)Mn2+0.011(3)Mg0.005(2))Σ0.155(Nb0.020(6)Ta0.011(3))Σ0.040]Σ2.009(Si3.991(14)O13OH), respectively. The structure of the crystals was refined in the triclinic system with unconventional space-group symmetry C1 to R1 = 2.02% and 3.56%, respectively. The unit cells were found to be a = 10.0080(2), b = 8.3622(1), c = 13.2994(2) Å, α = 89.987(1), β = 109.095(2), γ = 89.978(1)° and V = 1051.77(3) Å3 for silesiaite from Szklarska Poręba, and a = 9.9985(3), b = 8.3446(2), c = 13.2760(4) Å, α = 89.986(3), β = 109.122(2), γ = 90.020(2)° and V = 1046.55(5) Å3 for silesiaite from Häiviäntien. In both crystals, the Ca sites are occupied solely by calcium and Si sites by silicon atoms. Optimised occupancies of the four M sites indicated slightly different site fillings. In the Szklarska Poręba silesiaite, the M1 site is predominantly occupied by trivalent Fe + Sc and the M2–M4 sites by Sn. In contrast, in the Häiviäntien silesiaite, the M1–M3 sites are Sn-dominant, while Fe3+ predominantly occupies the M4 site. The differences can be considered a result of an evolution of the M1–M4 site occupancies following a decrease of the <M–O> distance. Among the minerals of the kristiansenite group, Sc-free silesiaite from the Häiviäntien pegmatite has the smallest average radius of M-site cations and a unit-cell volume that increases proportionally to the (Fe2+ ± Sc) content. The hydrogen atoms form moderate hydrogen bonds between disilicate groups (Si2O7 and Si2O6OH) linked in rows along [101], indicating the presence of one hydroxyl in the formula calculated for Z = 4. All three kristiansenite-group species, i.e. silesiaite, kozłowskiite and kristiansenite, are isostructural.

Multicoloured tourmalines from Elba Island, commonly display dark-coloured terminations due to incorporation of Fe, and also occasionally Mn. The mechanisms which led to the availability of these elements in the late-stage residual fluids are not yet completely understood. For this purpose, we investigated a representative tourmaline crystal found naturally in two fragments within a wide miarolitic cavity in the Rosina pegmatite (San Piero in Campo, Elba Island, Italy), and characterised by late-stage dark-coloured overgrowths. Microstructural and paragenetic observations, together with compositional and spectroscopic data (electron microprobe and optical absorption spectroscopy), provide evidence which shows that the formation of the dark-coloured Mn-rich overgrowths are the result of a pocket rupture. This event caused alteration of the cavity-coating spessartine garnet by highly-reactive late-stage cavity fluids by leaching processes, with the subsequent release of Mn to the residual fluids. We argue that the two fragments were originally a single crystal, which underwent natural breakage followed by the simultaneous growth of Mn-rich dark terminations at both breakage surfaces. This conclusion supports the evidence for a pocket rupture event, responsible for both the shattering of the tourmaline crystal and the compositional variation of the cavity-fluids related to the availability of Mn, which was incorporated by the tourmaline crystals. Additionally, a comparison of the dark overgrowths formed at the analogous and the antilogous poles, provides information on tourmaline crystallisation at the two different poles. The antilogous pole is characterised by a higher affinity for Ca, F and Ti, and a selective uptake of Mn2+, even in the presence of a considerable amount of Mn3+ in the system. This uneven uptake of Mn ions resulted in the yellow–orange colouration of the antilogous overgrowth (Mn2+ dependent) rather than the purple-reddish colour of the analogous overgrowths (Mn3+ dependent).

Dongchuanite, ideally Pb4VIZnIVZn2(PO4)2(PO4)2(OH)2, is a new phosphate mineral with a new type of structure. It was found at the Dongchuan copper mine, Yunnan Province, People's Republic of China. Dongchuanite generally occurs as spherical aggregates with microscopic lamellar crystals, characterised by a turquoise–greenish blue colour. It is transparent, with a colourless streak and has a vitreous lustre without fluorescence. It is brittle with a Mohs hardness of 2–2½, and has good parallel cleavage to {011}, with insignificant parting and even fracture. According to the empirical formula and cell volume, it has a calculated density of 6.06 g/cm3. It easily dissolves in acid without gas being emitted. The mineral is biaxial (–), calculated n = 1.90 and maximum birefringence: δ = 0.010 and 2V=70°. Dispersion of the optical axes r < v is very weak. The mineral is pale blue to light blue and very weakly pleochroic in transmitted light. Dongchuanite crystallises in the triclinic space group P$\bar{1}$, with unit-cell parameters a = 4.7620(10) Å, b = 8.5070(20) Å, c = 10.3641(19) Å, α = 97.110(17)°, β = 101.465(17)°, γ = 92.273(18)°, V = 407.44(15) Å3 and Z = 1. The eight strongest reflections in the powder X-ray diffraction pattern [dobs, Å (I/I0) (hkl)] are: 3.442 (100) ($\bar{1}$12), 3.035 (50) (120), 4.652 (45) (100), 2.923 (40) ($\bar{1}\bar{1}$3), 2.384 (35) ($\bar{2}$01), 3.130 (30) ($\bar{1}$21), 2.811 (30) (030) and 2.316 (18) (032). The crystal structure (solved and refined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data, R1 = 0.07) is a new layered structure consisting of corner-sharing tetrahedrons and octahedrons, where [PO4] tetrahedra and [ZnO4] tetrahedra share corners to form a double chain, and the another [PO4] tetrahedra is connected by corner-sharing with a [ZnO4(OH)2] octahedra to form a tetrahedral–octahedral chain, extending along the a-axis direction. The two types of chains are connected by corner-sharing between [ZnO4] and [PO4] tetrahedra forming a wrinkled layer parallel to (011). The Pb atoms occupy two independent sites between the wrinkled layers, both of which have typical lopsided coordination of Pb2+ with stereoactive 6s2 lone-pair electrons.

The new mineral alumolukrahnite (IMA2022–059), CaCu2+Al(AsO4)2(OH)(H2O), was found at the Jote mine, Copiapó Province, Chile, where it is a secondary alteration phase associated with conichalcite, coronadite, gypsum, olivenite, pharmacosiderite, rruffite and scorodite. Alumolukrahnite occurs as crude diamond-shaped tablets up to ~0.1 mm, intergrown in crude spherical aggregates. Crystals are apple green and transparent to translucent, with vitreous lustre and a white streak. The Mohs hardness is 3½. The mineral is brittle with irregular fracture and no cleavage. The calculated density is 4.094 g cm–3. Optically, alumolukrahnite is biaxial (+) with α = 1.73(1), β = 1.74(1) and γ = 1.76(1) (white light). The empirical formula, determined from electron microprobe analyses, is Ca1.01(Cu0.92Zn0.13)Σ1.05(Al0.96Fe0.01)Σ0.97(As0.985O4)2(OH)0.88(H2O)1.12. Alumolukrahnite is triclinic, P$\bar{1}$, a = 5.343(5), b = 5.501(5), c = 7.329(5) Å, α = 67.72(2), β = 69.06(2), γ = 69.42(2)°, V = 180.3(3) Å3 and Z = 1. Alumolukrahnite is a member of the tsumcorite group and is the Al analogue of lukrahnite.

The chemical composition (including B, Be and Li), the Raman spectrum and the crystal-structure evolution (at the temperature range 27–1000°C) of a Mn-bearing, Bi-rich gadolinite-subgroup mineral from the Jaguaraçu Pegmatite, Brazil (type-locality of minasgeraisite-(Y)) was studied. Elemental mapping revealed that the crystal investigated has complex chemical zonation with various Bi (~8–24 wt.% Bi2O3), Ca (~8–10 wt.% CaO) and Y (~11–17 wt.% Y2O3) content. The sample investigated has all the specific features of the chemical composition of minasgeraisite-(Y), except Ca excess and, thus, should be considered as hingganite-(Y). The Raman spectrum of the sample under study has bands at 140, 179, 243, 350, 446, 519, 559, 625, 902, 973, 3224, 3353, 3532 and 3763 cm–1, and is similar to that of hingganite-(Y) / -(Nd). Crystal-structure refinement confirmed that the crystal in question should be considered as hingganite-(Y) and is in line with the previously obtained data on gadolinite-subgroup minerals from the Jaguaraçu Pegmatite. High-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies revealed that the mineral starts to decompose above 800°C. We can conclude that beryllosilicates are most stable at high-temperature conditions within the gadolinite supergroup and that species with a higher M-site occupancy have higher stability upon heating.

This work describes the mineralogy of dolomite carbonatite occurring at the Newania carbonatite complex, Rajasthan, north-western India. The mineralogy records the textural and compositional features of magmatic and post-magmatic stages of carbonatite evolution. Ferroan dolomite is the principal constituent and displays variable degrees of deformation, ranging from brittle-to-ductile deformation regimes. Apatite exhibits textural and compositional evolutionary trends from early-to-late stages of carbonatite evolution. Two varieties of amphibole are reported for the first time from this complex, ferri-winchite and cummingtonite; the former is magmatic and the latter is metamorphic in origin. The columbite–tantalite-series minerals are columbite-(Fe), and their paragenesis evolves from composite grains with pyrochlore to individual crystals. Pyrochlore is magmatic with U–Ta–Ti-rich compositions and shows evolution from calciopyrochlore to kenopyrochlore, followed by alteration during late-stages of carbonatite evolution. Monazite and baryte constitute the post-magmatic mineral assemblage; the former is hydrothermal and crystallised after precursor apatite, whereas the latter is associated exclusively with columbite–pyrochlore composites. On the basis of the mineralogy of the carbonatite, it is concluded that the parent magma was generated by low-degree partial melting of magnesite–phlogopite-bearing peridotite.

The new mineral, gysinite-(La), with the ideal formula PbLa(CO3)2(OH)⋅H2O, has been discovered in lujavrite from the Saima alkaline complex, Liaoning Province, China. It commonly occurs as subhedral to anhedral, granular and platy crystals of 5 to 50 μm in size, in interstices or enclosed in microcline, aegirine and nepheline. Associated minerals include nepheline, aegirine, microcline, natrolite, eudialyte, lamprophyllite, bastnäsite-(Ce), parasite-(Ce), ancylite-(La), ancylite-(Ce), bobtraillite, britholite-(Ce), thorite, calcite and galena. The crystallisation of gysinite-(La) may be related to the post-magmatic carbonation event. Gysinite-(La) crystals are generally transparent, colourless, or pale yellow, with a vitreous lustre and white streak. It is brittle with an uneven fracture, and the estimated Mohs hardness is 3½ to 4. The calculated density is 5.007 g/cm3. Optically, gysinite-(La) is biaxial (–), α= 1.832(2), β= 1.849(4), γ = 1.862(5) in white light and 2Vmeas = 81.6°. The empirical formula of gysinite-(La) is (La0.93Pb0.61Nd0.23Pr0.14Sr0.04Gd0.02Sm0.01Eu0.01Ca0.01)Σ2(CO3)2(OH)1.34⋅0.66H2O, which is calculated on the basis of general formula (REExM2+2–x)(CO3)2(OH)x⋅(2–x)H2O. The strongest eight lines of its powder X-ray diffraction pattern [d, Å (I, %) (hkl)] are: 5.596 (21) (011), 4.349 (100) (110), 3.732 (68) (111), 2.984 (61) (121), 2.667 (21) (031), 2.363 (48) (131), 2.090 (29) (221) and 2.028 (21) (212). Gysinite-(La) is orthorhombic, in the space group Pmcn, and unit-cell parameters refined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data are: a = 5.0655(2) Å, b = 8.5990(3) Å, c = 7.3901(4) Å, V = 321.90(2) Å3 and Z = 2. It is a new member of the ancylite group and isostructural with gysinite-(Nd), but with La and Pb dominant in the metal cation sites in the structure.

Auroselenide, ideally AuSe, is a new mineral from the Gaching ore occurrence of the Maletoyvayam deposit, Kamchatka peninsula, Russia. It occurs as anhedral grains up to 0.05 × 0.02 mm and as intergrowths up to 0.06 mm with maletoyvayamite–tolstykhite-series minerals, enclosed in native gold. Other associated minerals include pyrite, calaverite, fischesserite, gachingite, tetrahedrite-group minerals [stibiogoldfieldite, its As-analogue, tennantite-(Cu) and tetrahedrite-(Zn)], tripuhyite, minerals of the famatinite–luzonite and selenium–tellurium series, paraguanajuatite, petrovskaite, součekite and tiemannite. Auroselenide is bluish-grey, opaque with metallic lustre and grey streak. It is brittle and has an uneven fracture. Dcalc = 9.750 g/cm3. In reflected light, auroselenide is grey with a bluish shade. Bireflectance is very weak. No pleochroism and internal reflections are observed. In crossed polars, it is strongly anisotropic with bluish to brownish rotation tints. The reflectance values for wavelengths recommended by the Commission on Ore Mineralogy of the International Mineralogical Association are (Rmin/Rmax, %): 28.4/31.5 (470 nm), 30.2/33.3 (546 nm), 31.9/34.9 (589 nm) and 34.3/37.3 (650 nm). The principal bands in the Raman spectrum of auroselenide are at 93, 171, 200, 210 and 325 cm–1. The empirical formula calculated on the basis of 2 atoms per formula unit is (Au0.98Ag0.01)Σ0.99(Se0.79S0.17Te0.05)Σ1.01. Auroselenide is monoclinic, space group C2/m, a = 8.319(1), b = 3.616(1), c = 6.276(2) Å, β = 104.54(2)°, V = 182.74(5) Å3 and Z = 4. The strongest lines of the powder X-ray diffraction pattern [d, Å (I, %) (hkl)] are: 4.015 (54) (200); 3.033 (25) (${\bar 1}$11, 002); 2.780 (100) (${\bar 2}$02, 111); 2.172 (20) (${\bar 3}$11, 310); and 1.811 (25) (${\bar 1}$13). Auroselenide is the natural analogue of synthetic β-AuSe. The structural identity between them is confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The mineral is named according to its composition, as a combination of the main elements Au (aurum) and Se (selenium).

Corundum with inclusions of enigmatic super-reduced minerals was found in mineral separates received as a result of alluvial sediment exploration near Mt Carmel, Israel by the Shefa Yamim Company. This corundum, registered as ‘Carmel sapphireTM’, has been an object of numerous publications by W. Griffin's scientific team, in which they propose a questionable hypothesis of sapphire formation at the crust–mantle boundary with the participation of CH4+H2 fluids. Typically the Carmel sapphire is in small fragments of breccia with white cement, which in the opinion of Griffin et al. is a carbonate-cemented volcanic ash. Our investigation of the ‘white breccia’ showed that it consists of unsorted angular fragments of Carmel sapphire from ~1 μm to 7 mm in size cemented by aluminium hydroxides (bauxite) and is a waste product of the fused alumina process, i.e. it has an anthropogenic origin. Phases typical for slags of fused alumina production and metallurgical slags were identified in the ‘white breccia’. Carmel sapphire has numerous microscopic spherical inclusions of Si–Fe alloy indicating that the removal of Si and Fe from the corundum melt occurred at a temperature >2000°С. Osbornite, TiN, from Carmel sapphire has a chemical zonation characteristic of osbornite from fused alumina with enrichment of central zones in carbon. Comparison of the growth heterogeneity of Carmel sapphire and ‘electrocorundum’ indicates that the crystallisation of the corundum melt proceeded in a similar way. Unfortunately, in the case of Carmel sapphire from the Carmel locality, the contamination of geological samples with anthropogenic material has led to popularisation of biased views.

Mangani-eckermannite, ideally NaNa2(Mg4Mn3+)Si8O22(OH)2, is a new member of the amphibole supergroup found at Tanohata Mine, Shimohei District, Iwate Prefecture, Japan. It occurs as prismatic crystals up to 0.3 × 0.2 mm and their aggregates up to 1 mm intergrown with braunite, vittinkiite and quartz. Mangani-eckermannite is cherry-red to very dark red and reddish-brown in thicker grains. It is translucent with a pinkish white streak and vitreous lustre. It is brittle, fracture is stepped along crystal elongation and uneven across a crystal. Cleavage is perfect on {110}. Mohs hardness is 6. Dmeas = 3.16(2) and Dcalc = 3.186 g/cm3. The mineral is optically biaxial (–), with α = 1.645(3), β = 1.668(2), γ = 1.675(3) (589 nm); 2Vmeas = 60(10)°, 2Vcalc = 57°. The empirical formula derived from electron microprobe analysis, secondary-ion mass spectrometry and single-crystal structure refinement and calculated on the basis of 24 (O+OH) atoms per formula unit (apfu) is A(Na0.74K0.24□0.02)Σ1.00 B(Na1.52Ca0.24Mn2+0.24)Σ2.00 C(Mg2.54Mn2+1.45Mn3+0.71Fe3+0.26Ti0.04)Σ5.00 T(Si7.97Al0.03)Σ8.00O22W[(OH)1.52O0.48]Σ2.00. Mangani-eckermannite is monoclinic, space group C2/m, a = 9.9533(4), b = 18.1440(7), c = 5.2970(2) Å, β = 103.948(4)°, V = 928.39(6) Å3 and Z = 2. The strongest lines of the powder X-ray diffraction pattern [d, Å (I, %)(hkl)] are: 8.52(100)(110); 4.54(25)(040); 3.41(29)(131); 3.16(23)(310,201); 2.721(37)(151); 2.533(26)($\bar{2}$02). The crystal structure was refined to R1 = 0.0264 for 1001 independent reflections with I > 2σ(I). The place of mangani-eckermannite in the nomenclature of the amphibole supergroup is discussed and the status of mangano-ferri-eckermannite as a valid mineral species and successor of ‘kôzulite’ is questioned.

The categorisation of minerals and their related names, such as synonyms, obsolete or historical names, varieties or mixtures, is an asset for designing an interoperable and consistent mineralogical data warehouse. An enormous amount of this data, provided by mindat.org and other resources, was reviewed and analysed during the research. The analysis indicates the existence of several categories of (1) the abstract titles or designations representing the link to the original material or a group of names or substances without actual physical representation, and (2) the unique names representing actual physical material, compounds, or an aggregate of one or more minerals. A revision of the dependency between the categories attributes stored in a database (e.g. chemical properties, physical properties) and their classification status assigned allowed us to design a robust prototype for maintaining database integrity and consistency. The proposed scheme allows standardisation and structuring of officially regulated and maintained species, e.g. IMA-approved, and, in addition, unregulated ones.

The new mineral libbyite (IMA2022-091), (NH4)2(Na2□)[(UO2)2(SO4)3(H2O)]2⋅7H2O, was found in the Blue Lizard mine, San Juan County, Utah, USA, where it occurs as tightly intergrown aggregates of light green–yellow equant crystals in a secondary assemblage with bobcookite, coquimbite, halotrichite, metavoltine, rhomboclase, römerite, tamarugite, voltaite and zincorietveldite. The streak is very pale green yellow and the fluorescence is strong green under 405 nm ultraviolet light. Crystals are transparent with vitreous lustre. The tenacity is brittle, the Mohs hardness is ~2½, the fracture is curved. The mineral is soluble in H2O and has a calculated density of 3.465 g⋅cm–3. The mineral is optically uniaxial (–) with ω = 1.581(2) and ɛ = 1.540(2). Electron microprobe analyses provided (NH4)1.92K0.08Na2.00U4.00S6.00O41H18.00. Libbyite is tetragonal, P41212, a = 10.7037(11), c = 31.824(2) Å, V = 3646.0(8) Å3 and Z = 4. The structural unit is a uranyl–sulfate sheet that has the same topology as the sheets in several synthetic uranyl selenates.
