In a recent article [2] D. G. Larman and C. A. Rogers proved the following two results in Descriptive Set Theory (where R = the space of real numbers): (1) There is no analytic set in the plane R2, which is universal for the countable closed subsets of R; (2) there is no Borel set in R2, which is universal for the countable Gδ subsets of R. Recall that, if b is a class of subsets of a space X, a set U ⊆ X × X is called universal for b if (a) for each x ∈ X, Ux = def {y : (x, y) ∈ U} ∈ b, and (b) for each A ∈ b there is an x such that A = Ux. (Larman and Rogers have also shown that in both cases coanalytic universal sets exist.)

A method is developed for finding the distribution of velocity, density, pressure and magnetic field behind an expanding strong cylindrical shock wave in an infinitely conducting fluid in the presence of a magnetic field.

In the flow of such a fluid there are two distinct methods for producing a strong shock:

(i) by imposing the usual density ratio across the shock, as in the non-magnetic cnse, and

(ii) by imposing a large magnetic field, such that the Alfvén velocity is very much larger than the speed of sound. The distribution of the various physical quantities and the velocity of propagation of the shock are discussed for both cases, and numerical results given.

J. R. M. Radok [1] has applied complex variable methods to problems of dynamic plane elasticity. The object of this paper is to show that his results may be obtained in a somewhat simpler way by a more systematic use of complex variable analysis.

In fact it is shown that the problems may be reduced to a form similar to that of the static aelotropic plane strain problems considered by Green and Zerna [2].

This paper deals with the problem (raised by J. Browkin) of how many ring generators are needed for the ring of integers of a given algebraic number field. I show that the number of generators needed for the integers of a field of degree n is less than (logn/log2) + 1, and that if 2 splits completely in the field the number of generators needed is in fact the largest integer less than (logn/log2) + 1. These results follow from a computable formula (that depends only on how the small primes factorize in the field) for the number of generators of the ring of integers of a given field. This formula has the single drawback that when it yields “one” two generators may be needed, and I show that there are fields of arbitrarily high degree for which this happens.

In this paper we show that sieve methods used previously to investigate primes in short intervals and corresponding Goldbach-type problems can be modified to obtain results on primes in Beatty sequences in short intervals.

We prove the analog of Cramér’s short intervals theorem for primes in arithmetic progressions and prime ideals, under the relevant Riemann hypothesis. Both results are uniform in the data of the underlying structure. Our approach is based mainly on the inertia property of the counting functions of primes and prime ideals.

For a completely regular space X, denote by Cp(X) the space of continuous real valued functions on X, endowed with the pointwise convergence topology. The spaces X and Y are t-equivalent if Cp(X) and Cp(Y) are homeomorphic. It is proved that, for metrizable spaces X, the countable dimensionality is preserved by t-equivalence. It is also shown that this relation preserves absolute Borel classes greater than 2 and all projective classes.

The isotropic constant $L_{K}$ is an affine-invariant measure of the spread of a convex body $K$. For a $d$-dimensional convex body $K$, $L_{K}$ can be defined by $L_{K}^{2d}=\det (A(K))/(\text{vol}(K))^{2}$, where $A(K)$ is the covariance matrix of the uniform distribution on $K$. It is an open problem to find a tight asymptotic upper bound of the isotropic constant as a function of the dimension. It has been conjectured that there is a universal constant upper bound. The conjecture is known to be true for several families of bodies, in particular, highly symmetric bodies such as bodies having an unconditional basis. It is also known that maximizers cannot be smooth. In this work we study bodies that are neither smooth nor highly symmetric by showing progress towards reducing to a highly symmetric case among non-smooth bodies. More precisely, we study the set of maximizers among simplicial polytopes and we show that if a simplicial polytope $K$ is a maximizer of the isotropic constant among $d$-dimensional convex bodies, then when $K$ is put in isotropic position it is symmetric around any hyperplane spanned by a $(d-2)$-dimensional face and the origin. By a result of Campi, Colesanti and Gronchi, this implies that a simplicial polytope that maximizes the isotropic constant must be a simplex.

In [1] and [2] the flow of a conducting fluid past a magnetized sphere was considered. The magnetic distribution was an arbitrary axially symmetric one. The magnetic field, velocity, vorticity and drag were evaluated for the particular case of a dipole field when the dipole was in the free stream flow direction. Astronomically the more interesting case is that in which the dipole is perpendicular to the free stream flow. The axially symmetric nature of the problem is thereby lost.

For $k\geqslant 4$, we bound the number of variables needed to ensure that if ${\it\eta}$ is real and ${\it\tau}>0$ is sufficiently large then there exist integers $x_{1}>{\it\mu}_{1},\ldots ,x_{s}>{\it\mu}_{s}$ such that $|\mathfrak{F}(\mathbf{x})-{\it\tau}|<{\it\eta}$. This is a real analogue to Waring’s problem. When $s\geqslant 2k^{2}-2k+3$, we provide an asymptotic formula. We prove similar results for sums of general univariate degree-$k$ polynomials.

We study dual isoperimetric deficits of star bodies. We introduce the dual Steiner ball of a star body, and use it to establish an inequality for the Lp distance, p = 2 and p = ∞, between the radial functions of two convex bodies. By applying this inequality, we find dual Bonnesen-type inequalities for convex bodies. Finally, we use a general form of Grüss's inequality to derive dual Favard-type inequalities for star and convex bodies. The results contribute to the dual Brunn–Minkowski theory initiated by E. Lutwak, and continue the attempt to understand the relation between this and the classical Brunn–Minkowski theory.

This paper treats rational homology groups of one-point compactifications of spaces of complex monic polynomials with multiple roots. These spaces are indexed by number partitions. A standard reformulation in terms of quotients of orbit arrangements reduces the problem to studying certain triangulated spaces Xλ,μ.

In this paper we characterize the universal pointed actions of a semigroup S on a compact space such that the orbit of the distinguished point is dense; such actions are called transitive. The characterization is given in terms of the universal right topological monoidal compactification of S. All transitive actions are shown to arise as quotients modulo left congruences on this universal compactification. Minimal actions are considered, and close connections between these and minimal left ideals of the compactification are derived.

We prove a family of sharp bilinear space–time estimates for the half-wave propagator $\text{e}^{\text{i}t\sqrt{-\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E5}}}$ . As a consequence, for radially symmetric initial data, we establish sharp estimates of this kind for a range of exponents beyond the classical range.
