Let K be a finitely generated field over its prime field. Then for almost all e-tuples σ = (σ1, …, σe) of elements of the abstract Galois group G(K) of K and for all elliptic curves E defined over the following results hold.

§1. Introduction, By a remarkable result of Erdos and Selfridge [3] in 1975. the diophantine equation

with integers k≥2 and m≥2, has only the trivial solutions. x = −j(j = i, …, m), y = 0. This put an end to the old question whether the product of consecutive positive integers could ever be a perfect power; for a brief account of its history see [7].

Let K/k be a normal extension of algebraic number fields whose Galois group G is a Frobenius group. Then K/k is said to be a Frobenius extension. Most of the structure of the unit group and of the ideal class group of K is determined by that; of the subfields fixed by the Frobenius kernel N and by a complement F. Here this is investigated when G is a maximal or metacyclic Frobenius group. In particular, the results apply firstly to the normal closure of where a ∊ k and p is a rational prime, and, secondly, when G is a dihedral group of order 2n for an odd integer n. A. Scholz, taking n = p = 3, was the first to consider this problem.

In this paper, we investigate in various ways the representation of a large natural number as a sum of a fixed power of Piatetski-Shapiro numbers, thereby establishing a variant of the Hilbert–Waring problem with numbers from a sparse sequence.

The self-complement index s(G) of a graph G is the maximum order of an induced subgraph of G whose complement is also induced in G. This new graphical invariant provides a measure of how close a given graph is to being selfcomplementary. We establish the existence of graphs G of order p having s(G) = n for all positive integers n < p. We determine s(G) for several families of graphs and find in particular that when G is a tree, s(G) = 4 unless G is a star for which s(G) = 2.

for all positive integers q. As is well known, a single number β is badly approximable if and only if the partial quotients in its continued fraction are bounded.

Let $s(\cdot )$ denote the sum-of-proper-divisors function, that is, $s(n)=\sum _{d\mid n,~d<n}d$. Erdős, Granville, Pomerance, and Spiro conjectured that for any set $\mathscr{A}$ of asymptotic density zero, the preimage set $s^{-1}(\mathscr{A})$ also has density zero. We prove a weak form of this conjecture: if $\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}(x)$ is any function tending to $0$ as $x\rightarrow \infty$, and $\mathscr{A}$ is a set of integers of cardinality at most $x^{1/2+\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}(x)}$, then the number of integers $n\leqslant x$ with $s(n)\in \mathscr{A}$ is $o(x)$, as $x\rightarrow \infty$. In particular, the EGPS conjecture holds for infinite sets with counting function $O(x^{1/2+\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}(x)})$. We also disprove a hypothesis from the same paper of EGPS by showing that for any positive numbers $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}$, there are integers $n$ with arbitrarily many $s$-preimages lying between $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}(1-\unicode[STIX]{x1D716})n$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}(1+\unicode[STIX]{x1D716})n$. Finally, we make some remarks on solutions $n$ to congruences of the form $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E}(n)\equiv a~(\text{mod}~n)$, proposing a modification of a conjecture appearing in recent work of the first two authors. We also improve a previous upper bound for the number of solutions $n\leqslant x$, making it uniform in $a$.

In [5] Knowles proved the following.

Every compact Hausdorff space with no isolated points admits a non-atomic measure.

This note is concerned with the converse problem in a more general set up. Here we deal with certain properties of the family of completely regular spaces admitting no continuous measures. In §3 it is shown that this family contains spaces with no isolated points, thus theorem (1.1) does not generalize to completely regular spaces. In §4 a canonical decomposition of the compact members of the above family into discrete subspaces is obtained, and it is shown that these spaces are metrizable whenever they satisfy the first axiom of countability.

In a recent article [2] D. G. Larman and C. A. Rogers proved the following two results in Descriptive Set Theory (where R = the space of real numbers): (1) There is no analytic set in the plane R2, which is universal for the countable closed subsets of R; (2) there is no Borel set in R2, which is universal for the countable Gδ subsets of R. Recall that, if b is a class of subsets of a space X, a set U ⊆ X × X is called universal for b if (a) for each x ∈ X, Ux = def {y : (x, y) ∈ U} ∈ b, and (b) for each A ∈ b there is an x such that A = Ux. (Larman and Rogers have also shown that in both cases coanalytic universal sets exist.)

An upper bound for the “sausage catastrophe” of dense sphere packings in 4-space is given.

A basic problem in the theory of finite packing is to determine, for a given positive integer k, the minimal volume of all convex bodies into which k translates of the unit ball Bd of the Euclidean d-dimensional space Ed can be packed ([5]). For d = 2 this problem was solved by Groemer ([6]).

An integer $d$ is called a jumping champion for a given $x$ if $d$ is the most common gap between consecutive primes up to $x$. Occasionally, several gaps are equally common. Hence, there can be more than one jumping champion for the same $x$. In 1999, Odlyzko et al provided convincing heuristics and empirical evidence for the truth of the hypothesis that the jumping champions greater than 1 are 4 and the primorials $2,6,30,210,2310,\ldots \,$. In this paper, we prove that an appropriate form of the Hardy–Littlewood prime $k$-tuple conjecture for prime pairs and prime triples implies that all sufficiently large jumping champions are primorials and that all sufficiently large primorials are jumping champions over a long range of $x$.

A method is developed for finding the distribution of velocity, density, pressure and magnetic field behind an expanding strong cylindrical shock wave in an infinitely conducting fluid in the presence of a magnetic field.

In the flow of such a fluid there are two distinct methods for producing a strong shock:

(i) by imposing the usual density ratio across the shock, as in the non-magnetic cnse, and

(ii) by imposing a large magnetic field, such that the Alfvén velocity is very much larger than the speed of sound. The distribution of the various physical quantities and the velocity of propagation of the shock are discussed for both cases, and numerical results given.

J. R. M. Radok [1] has applied complex variable methods to problems of dynamic plane elasticity. The object of this paper is to show that his results may be obtained in a somewhat simpler way by a more systematic use of complex variable analysis.

In fact it is shown that the problems may be reduced to a form similar to that of the static aelotropic plane strain problems considered by Green and Zerna [2].

Let f be a positive-definite ternary quadratic form with integer coefficients; by c(f), the class-number of f, is meant the number of classes in the genus of f. The object of this paper is to find all the f with c(f) = 1; these f are the ones for which , where f′ is an arbitrary ternary form and ∼, denote equivalence and semi-equivalence respectively. Trivially, it suffices to find the primitive f with c(f) = 1.

This paper deals with the problem (raised by J. Browkin) of how many ring generators are needed for the ring of integers of a given algebraic number field. I show that the number of generators needed for the integers of a field of degree n is less than (logn/log2) + 1, and that if 2 splits completely in the field the number of generators needed is in fact the largest integer less than (logn/log2) + 1. These results follow from a computable formula (that depends only on how the small primes factorize in the field) for the number of generators of the ring of integers of a given field. This formula has the single drawback that when it yields “one” two generators may be needed, and I show that there are fields of arbitrarily high degree for which this happens.
