Ceratopsid diversity at the end of the Cretaceous plays a role in interpreting faunal events at or near the Cretaceous–Tertiary boundary in North America. The addition of a new ceratopsid genus within this time frame thus has potential ramifications for the interpretation of these events.

A diverse fauna of ostracodes comprising 21 species representing 20 genera are described from the Maxville Limestone in central Ohio. Eight new species are proposed—Roundyella incompta, Deloia spinula, Lokius morsei, Bairdia prolixa, Acratia prolata, Waylandella depresssa, Pseudobythocypris securis, and Paracavellina cooperi.

Oliganisus secunda (Croneis and Bristol), Glyptopleura costata (McCoy), and Geffenina praelonga Cooper are represented by tecnomorphs and heteromorphs. Specimens of Sansabella bradfieldi Coryell and Sohn show reversal of valve overlap.

The ostracode fauna indicates a Chesterian age for the Maxville Limestone.

Disarticulated spines and sclerites of assumed multiple row problematic organisms are present in several Mississippian and Pennsylvanian stratigraphic units. Marginal spines and dorsal spinose sclerites are present. Marginal sclerites are distinguishable into anterior, posterior, and left- and right-handed lateral forms. The new family Aenigmatectidae and genus Aenigmatectus with two new species, A. hystricosus and A. magnacavus, are recognized. Aenigmatectus sp. from the Mississippian is also described. The family is tentatively assigned to the order Hercolepadida Dzik, 1986.

Zokors (Myospalacinae) continue to be the center of systematics discussions. Phylogenetic schemes based on molecular data do not always agree with each other, nor can phylogenetic schemes based on paleontological material be complete due to the only-partial description of West Siberian zokors. This paper tries to fill this gap and presents a description of the West Siberian lineage from the late early Pleistocene to the present, together with an analysis of molar development in other zokor lineages. We describe two new species and one subspecies (Myospalax myospalax krukoveri n. ssp., Myospalax convexus n. sp., Prosiphneus razdoleanensis n. sp.) ancestral to the extant Myospalax myospalax Laxmann, 1769. We also reveal differences in the ontogeny of molars of modern species that were not previously detailed. These differences, together with paleontological data, indicate that in the West Siberian lineage, peramorphosis occurred in the structure of the chewing surface (with the exception of the lower m1), whereas in all other zokor lineages, there was pedomorphosis. On the basis of these results, we suggest a new view on the systematics of Myospalacinae.

In this study, middle to late Mississippian microfossil assemblages from the Maritimes Basin of eastern Canada (Nova Scotia, SW Newfoundland, and New Brunswick) are closely compared to those from Western Paleotethys basins. The comparison is focused mainly on foraminifers and calcareous algae. Most foraminifers and algae described from the Maritimes Basin are considered cosmopolitan, and the occurrence in western Europe and northern Africa of taxa previously considered endemic to the North America Realm suggests a close paleobiogeographic relationship. This European/African correlation is further supported by other foraminiferal/algal taxa, the importance of which were previously overlooked, including: Plectogyranopsis ex gr. P. hirosei (Okimura, 1965), Mikhailovella Ganelina, 1956, Koktjubina windsorensis (Mamet, 1970), Polysphaerinella bulla Mamet, 1973, Mstinia Dain in Dain and Grozdilova, 1953, Haplophragmina Reitlinger, 1950, Omphalotis Shlykova, 1969, Pseudolituotuba Vdovenko, 1971, Pseudoendothyra Mikhailov, 1939, Saccamminopsis (Sollas, 1921) Vachard and Cózar, 2003, Kamaenella Mamet and Roux, 1974, and Anthracoporellopsis Maslov, 1956. Some species recorded in the Maritimes Basin have been typically recorded in Britain and Ireland in the southern platform of Laurussia. This implies a connection via the Rhenohercynian Ocean, whereas statistical analyses suggest that Maritimes Basin assemblages are closer to those of the Gondwana platform, which could have been established via the Paleotethys Ocean, and also with terranes northwest of the Variscan Front, in which its most logical connection should be with a still-open Rheic Ocean during the Visean and early Serpukhovian. Those taxa demonstrate a more-or-less continuous faunal and microfloral interchange between the Maritimes Basin and the Western Paleotethys paleobiogeographic realm. Furthermore, the width of the Paleotethys and Rheic oceans separating these regions is not considered excessive, particularly during the late Visean and early Serpukhovian.

A highly diverse fauna of dromioid brachyurans from the Serraduy Formation (lower Eocene) in the western Pyrenees (Huesca, Spain) is described and illustrated. Recorded taxa are Mclaynotopus longispinosus new genus new species, Torodromia elongata n. gen. n. sp., Basidromilites glaessneri n. gen. n. sp., ?Basidromilites sp., Sierradromia gladiator n. gen. n. sp., Kromtitis isabenensis n. sp., and ?Basinotopus sp. Other European outcrops have yielded dromioids in association with specific environments, likely coral and sponge reef and siliciclastic soft bottoms; but the present material constitutes the most diverse dromioid assemblage from the lower Eocene worldwide. These dromioids co-occurred with a rich invertebrate fauna and lived near coral–algal reef mounds. Sedimentological data suggest that most of the fauna accumulated in fore reef settings as a result of storm activity. The present material greatly increases the diversity of known dromioid crabs associated with Eocene reef environments.

A new genus of flabellid scleractinian coral, Periplacotrochus, is described from the late Eocene to middle Miocene of Victoria, South Australia, and Tasmania. It differs from Placotrochus in having a pedicellate base, and from Flabellum in having a lamellar columella. Six previously described species are redescribed, illustrated, and reassigned to this genus (P. deltoideus Duncan, 1864, P. corniculatus Dennant, 1899, P. elongatus Duncan, 1864, P. pueblensis Dennant, 1903, P. inflectus Dennant, 1903, and P. magnus Dennant, 1904), and one new species is described: P. cudmorei. One species, Placotrochus elegans Tennison-Woods, 1878a, is considered as a nomen dubium. A key is provided to the seven species placed in this genus.

The family Cardiliidae has been scarcely studied. It was historically placed in the superfamily Mactroidea. Members of this family are characterized by a cordiform shell with a typical mactrid hinge, posterior adductor muscle placed into a myophore and three ornamental areas on the external surface of the shell. Six extant and 14 exclusively fossil species have been previously mentioned in the literature as belonging to the genus Cardilia. The geographical distribution, stratigraphic range, type material and type locality of each extant and fossil species are provided. In this work, four extant species and 11 exclusively fossil species belonging to the genus Cardilia are recognized. Extant species are from the western Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean and eastern Atlantic Ocean, while fossil taxa are recorded from deposits of middle Eocene to late Pliocene in Europe and Asia,. One of them is formally described herein as Cardilia edwardsi new species.

Toriyama and Kanmera (1968), in one of their studies of fusulines from the Rat Buri Limestone, Thailand, proposed two Permian fusuline foraminifer genera, Thailandina and Neothailandina. Based on these two genera they established the subfamily Thailandininae and placed it in the family Neoschwagerinidae. the tests of these genera are invariably replaced by secondary mineralization to a finegrained mosaic calcite such as seen in specimens of Staffellidae. the thailandinid wall was apparently originally composed of a tectum and keriotheca.

In 1992 Sander described in this journal a find of the ichthyosaurian genus Cymbospondylus from the Middle Triassic of Spitsbergen. At the time of publication, the specimen illustrated in figures 2-4 (Sander, 1992) and five associated elements (not figured) were housed at the Paleontological Institute and Museum of the University of Zürich (PIMUZ A/III 496 and PIMUZ A/III 647-651). These specimens were later donated by their collector and owner Professor Hans-Joachim Schweitzer (Bonn) to the Paleontological Museum of the University of Oslo (PMO), where they are now stored under the following numbers:

This is the first of two comprehensive taxonomic works on the early Miocene (ca. 23–20 Ma) bryozoan fauna associated with coral reefs from the Siamaná Formation, in the remote region of Cocinetas Basin in the La Guajira Peninsula, northern Colombia, southern Caribbean. Fifteen bryozoan species in 11 families are described, comprising two cyclostomes and 13 cheilostomes. Two cheilostome genera and seven species are new: Antropora guajirensis n. sp., Calpensia caribensis n. sp., Atoichos magnus n. gen. n. sp., Gymnophorella hadra n. gen. n. sp., Cribrilaria multicostata n. sp., Cribrilaria nixor n. sp., and Figularia bragai n. sp. Eight species are identified only at genus level and remain in open nomenclature. Of the species found, 27% have erect colonies and 73% encrusting colonies. Both types contributed to the reef framework and produced sediment. The observed bryozoan diversity was higher in the barrier reefs than in the lagoonal patch reefs.

Decimeter-scale, elongate, fossil fronds from the Ediacara Range in South Australia were formally described as Rangea longa Glaessner and Wade, 1966, but the disparate nature of documented specimens has hindered their inclusion in global syntheses and has resulted in these fossils being assigned to at least five different genera in two different clades since their discovery. Detailed study of the type material from the Ediacara Range and the few specimens subsequently collected elsewhere in the Flinders Ranges reaffirms that these specimens represent a single species, with the apparent morphological variation between specimens entirely taphonomic and reflecting the obverse and reverse surfaces of these fronds coupled with the orientation of the frond axis and petaloids at different angles relative to the sea bottom on which they were preserved. The preserved architecture of these fronds constitutes three orders of branching microstructure that are strictly orthogonal to immediately higher and lower orders. This implies affinities with the arboreomorphs, but representing a new frond genus herein named Akrophyllas. Akrophyllas n. gen. differs from all other Ediacaran fronds in exhibiting a stalk that is visible only on one side of the frond and is internal to the other side where the first-order branches instead meet at a zigzag axial trace. Akrophyllas n. gen. was attached to a bulbous holdfast on the sea bottom, and evidence for current scours that formed in the lee of the fronds and for a strong current alignment of felled fronds with depositional overlap of adjacent fronds imply an upright, epibenthic lifestyle for Akrophyllas longa new combination.

The Milwaukee Public Museum has recently completed the computerized curation of its Cambrian and Devonian invertebrate fossil collections. This notice is intended to alert the paleontological community of the availability of these collections for study. The curation was supported by the Biological Research Resources Program of the National Science Foundation. The Cambrian and Devonian collections have approximately 87,000 specimens from 1,977 localities. Isolated specimens were counted directly, but counts of multiple specimens on slabs are conservative. Thus, the number of specimens represents a minimum number of fossils and more careful counting of material on slabs will increase the total.

In the November 1990 (Vol. 64, no. 6) issue of the Journal of Paleontology, Lehman and Carpenter described an Aublysodon, which at the time was believed to be the most complete Carnosaur known from the Upper Cretaceous Kirtland Shale of northwestern New Mexico. Recently, a more complete specimen, considered to be a tyrannosaurid dinosaur on the basis of a proximally constricted third metatarsal and a partial D-shaped (in cross section) premaxillary tooth (Molnar, 1990), has been brought to the attention of the Museum of Geology at Arizona State University by an amateur paleontologist who recognized its scientific importance after obtaining it from an individual in New Mexico. The remains of this dinosaur, collected in northwestern New Mexico sometime in late 1989 or early 1990 by unknown persons, include both cranial and skeletal material (Figure 1.1).

As one of the highly diversified radiolarian groups in the Mesozoic, Vallupinae occurred widely in the tuffaceous claystone from the Mariana Trench of the upper Tithonian–Berriasian where the specimens are extremely well-preserved. The occurrence of diversified Vallupinae presented here is further evidence that the range of Vallupinae extends to Berriasian. The stratigraphic range and proposed possible phylogenetic relationships within the Subfamily Vallupinae are provided and 17 radiolarian species of this subfamily are presented, including three new species: Vallupus gracilis, Mesovallupus brevispina, and Neovallupus mediforma.

The genus Ardea includes all living species of large herons. Brodkorb (1963) listed five fossil species of Ardea, and only one fossil species has since been described. Of these six, only two are unquestionably members of the genus Ardea. Ardea brunhuberi von Ammon, 1918, from the Upper Miocene Brown Coal Formation, Württemburg, Germany, was moved by Brodkorb (1980) to the Phalacrocoracidae as Phalacrocorax brunhuberi. Brodkorb (1980) considered A. lignitum Giebel, 1860, from the Sarmatian Brown Coal of Rippersroda, Thuringia, Germany, to be a large owl in the genus Bubo. Olson (1985) similarly regards A. perplexa from the Astaracian of Sansan, France, to be a large owl, possibly in the genus Bubo. The type of Ardea aureliensis Milne-Edwards, 1871, from the Oreleanian of Suevres, France, has never been illustrated or restudied and its affinities need to be confirmed (Olson, 1985). The valid fossil species are Ardea polkensis Brodkorb, 1955, from the late Hemphillian Bone Valley Mining District, Florida, and A. howardae Brodkorb, 1980, from the Plio/Pleistocene Shungura Formation, Omo Basin, Ethiopia. A large species of Ardea is also known from the late Clarendonian Love Bone Bed local fauna, Florida, but is based on material too fragmentary for specific identification (Becker, 1985). This note reports the earliest certain occurrence of Ardea now known.

Ecphora is one of the most easily recognized gastropod genera in late Oligocene, Miocene, and Pliocene marine formations in the southeastern United States. Its generally large size, strong spiral ribs, and brown, calcitic exterior are much prized by fossil collectors. However, despite speculations by Petuch (1988), its evolutionary origins have remained obscure. The present shell microstructural and mineralogical evidence suggests that the earliest ecphoras were entirely aragonitic and that the thick calcitic outer layer of the later Miocene and Pliocene species originated as a thin calcitic crust on the crests of the ribs of a latest Oligocene or earliest Miocene species.
