If a series of glacial advances occurs over the same pathway, the moraines that are now present may constitute an incomplete record of the total history. This is because a given advance can destroy the moraine left by a previous one, if the previous advance was less extensive. Gibbons, Megeath and Pierce (GMP) formulated an elegant stochastic model for this process; the key quantity in their analysis is $\bi P(n\vert N)$, the probability that n moraines are preserved after N glacial advances. In their paper, GMP derive a recursion formula satisfied by $\bi P(n\vert N)$, and use this formula to compute values of P for a range of values of n and N. In the present paper, we derive an explicit general answer for $\bi P(n\vert N)$, and show explicit, exact results for the mean value and standard deviation of n. We use these results to develop more insight into the consequences of the GMP model; for example, to a good approximation, 〈n〉 increases as ln(N). We explain how a Bayesian approach can be used to analyze $\bi P(N\vert n)$, the probability that there were N advances, given that we now observe n moraines.

Conical mounds of ice have been observed to form in a few hours during violent winter storms along the edge of shore-fast ice near Dunkirk, New York. They occur in lines which parallel depth contours, and are evenly spaced in the manner of beach cusps. The height and spacing of mounds and number of rows vary from year to year depending on such factors as storm duration and intensity, and the position of the edge of the shore-fast ice at the beginning of the storm.

The evenly sloping conical mounds have central channels which increase in width lakeward. The ice between the channels forms headlands above the lake surface. Spray-formed levees develop along the headlands and slope gently away from the lake margin. Lake marginal walls of ice are usually vertical.

Spray, slush and ice blocks are ejected over the cone as each successive wave is focused by the converging channel walls. Ice blocks, interlayered with frozen slush and dirt, form bedding paralleling the sloping surface of cones, headlands and levees. These features are here termed “ice volcanoes” because their origin is in so many ways analogous to that of true volcanoes.

A stainless-steel platen, with a centrally located pressure sensor on the front face, has been used to crush mono-crystalline, bubble-free fresh-water ice samples. Two electrical conductors, located on the face of the pressure sensor, were connected to a bridge circuit so that the presence of liquid between the two conductors could be detected and its thickness measured. Video records of the ice/ steel contact zone during crushing were obtained by mounting samples on a thick Plexiglas plate which permitted viewing through the specimen to the ice/steel interface. Total load and pressure records exhibited a sawtooth pattern due to the compliance of the ice and the testing apparatus, and spalling of ice from the contact zone. When the region of contact was in the vicinity of the pressure transducer, liquid was detected and peaks occurred in the liquid sensor output when load drops occurred. Contact between the platen and the ice consisted of low pressure zones of highly damaged crushed and/or refrozen ice, opaque in appearance, and transparent, high-pressure regions of relatively undamaged ice. Upper limits for the liquid-layer thickness on the high-pressure undamaged ice were ~3 µm on the ascending sides of the sawteeth in the load records and ~ 21 µ on the sharp descending sides.

Submersible remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) are valuable research tools for data collection in dangerous or inaccessible environments associated with glaciers terminating in the sea. At tide-water ice cliffs, iceberg calving makes close approaches for extended time periods In manned vessels dangerous. ROVs can be operated from relatively safe distances (hundreds of metres); they can also descend to considerably greater depths (hundreds rather than tens of metres) than scuba diving permits. They can provide data on glacier grounding-line and sea-floor morphology and water-column characteristics (e.g. salinity, turbidity, current velocity). They are also used for. diving under floating glacier tongues and ice shelves where no other access is possible. They can be fitted with a variety of oceanographic sensors, imaging sensors, tracking devices and water and sediment samplers, making them versatile research instruments that can supply qualitative and quantitative data for process studies in logistically difficult environments.

A solution for the steady flow of a cold ice sheet is recalled, which takes account of the heat released by deformation. As this strain heating increases the strain velocity, the bottom temperature may be unstable. A set of five equations with five unknowns is written, which allows the surface profile and the bottom temperature to be computed step by step by an iterative process. This has been done by computer for three very different models of ice sheets. and in each case with three distinct values of the constant B in Glen’s ice flow law. It was found in every case that steady-state temperature profiles could not be computed beyond a moderate distance from the ice divide. The correct value of B for bottom ice may be deduced from the actual surface profile. At the bottom of Greenland ice sheet, B ≈ 2.18 bar −3 year−1. This is about thirteen times bigger than for the bulk of the alpine glaciers.

Seismic compressional-wave data from short refraction shooting carried out during the 1974–75 and 1976–77 seasons at J-9, the site of the Ross Ice Shelf Drilling Project, have been compared. Significant dissimilarities were found to exist between the two sets of data. The measurements were made at locations about 2 km apart, with three unreversed profiles 60° apart recorded during the 1976–77 season and one unreversed profile during the 1974–75 season. The resulting velocity–depth profiles, and hence the derived density–depth profiles, differ by as much as 8%, with the 1976–77 results indicating a maximum velocity, corresponding to solid ice, at a shallower depth than the 1974–75 data. Both profiles were subjected to the same analysis, and a comparison of travel-time curves shows the differences to be real. Densities measured on cores from a 100 m bore hole drilled in 1974–75 about 50 m from the center of the 1974–75 profile agree well with densities computed from that profile. The density difference is believed to be due to the passage of the ice through the high-stress system associated with the interaction between Ice Stream B, flowing in from the West Antarctic ice sheet, and the Ross Ice Shelf. A reversed refraction profile carried out at station B.C. about 30 km up-stream, shows evidence of dipping layers that may be similarly caused.

An electromagnetic stress-wave generator which was developed to study shock waves in snow and ice is described. This system works on the principle of generating large electrical currents to produce highly transient loads on the test specimen. In its present configuration, the generator can produce pressures ranging from a few kilopascals to as large as 104 kPa and load frequencies as, high as 150 kHz. The system has been found to have high repeatability and has good turn-round time.

Previously reported experimental temperature data were used to compute the two components of the heat flux vector in the ice body adjacent to a crevasse in a glacier of the ice sheet of northern Greenland. Graphical differentiation techniques were employed. The computed components were used to synthesize values of the beat flux vector, including magnitude and direction. Improved accuracy was achieved over the previously reported technique of sketching heat flow lines orthogonal to the isotherms.

An examination is made of the Lliboutry theory of glacier sliding. It is concluded that this theory is incompletely developed and therefore it is impossible at present to make meaningful predictions of the sliding velocity from it that might be compared with field data.

Massive calving of the Ward Hunt Ice Shelf, northern Ellesmere Island, occurred between August 1961 and April 1962. An estimated 596 km.2 of ice shelf with a volume of 18 to 24 km.3 became detached to form ice islands, five of which are very large with areas ranging from 70 to 140 km.2. The fracture pattern and the subsequent drift of these ice islands are discussed.

Ice-sheet flow solutions commonly adopt a simple isotropic viscous law, in which the deviatoric stress is coaxial with the strain rate, and the single response function depends on only one invariant, the second principal invariant of the deviatoric stress. This can be correlated with single-stress component tests, which cannot, however, verify the validity of the simplification. Morland (2007) has shown how combined compression and shear tests can verify and correlate a general quadratic isotropic viscous relation, or simply third invariant dependence, and there is evidence that at least third principal invariant dependence is required. Morland (2007) showed that a significant quadratic term changes the relative stress magnitudes in the reduced model for ice-sheet flow, that crucial simplifications are not achieved and formally noted that dependence on the third invariant in the coaxial relation also prevented the simplification. It is now shown that, provided the third invariant dependence does not dominate the isotropic relation, further asymptotic expansion does yield the reduced model simplification, and the influence of different weightings of third invariant dependence is illustrated by a comparison of steady radial flow solutions over a flat bed. It is found that the third invariant dependence does not have a large influence in these examples.

The traditional method of calculating glacier outflows by measuring velocities and areas is difficult, inaccurate and sometimes dangerous in fast mountain streams. The salt-dilution method offers a more accurate alternative but, until now, its use has been restricted because of the difficulty of mixing chemical solutions and measuring chemical concentrations in the field. A computer program has been written which uses a laptop microcomputer to control measurements of stream conductivity and which quickly computes the stream flow directly in the field. The development of this method is described and examples are presented of the application of the method for glaciers in the Rocky Mountains and the Coast Mountains of Canada.

The velocity of flow of a glacier was measured at two places where the ice margin had no moraine debris between clear ice and unfragmented rock. In one of these places the point at which the measurement was made was only about 1 m. from the solid rock. It was found that at both sites the ice was flowing past the rock at a velocity of the same order of magnitude as the velocity of flow in the centre of the glacier in this region. Although conditions at the side of a glacier are not the same as at the bed, this large amount of slip is evidence for a high rate of slip all along the ice-rock interface, and this is in accordance with current ideas of the flow of ice below ice falls.

Surface strain-rate is best observed by fitting a strain-rate ellipsoid to the measured movement of a stake network, or other collection of surface features, using a least-squares procedure. Error of the resulting fit varies as (LΔt√n)-1 where L is the stake separation, Δt is the time period between initial and final stake survey, and n is the number of stakes in the network. This relation suggests that, if n is sufficiently high, the traditional practice of re-visiting stake-network sites on successive field seasons may be replaced by a less costly single-year operation. A demonstration using Ross Ice Shelf data shows that reasonably accurate measurements can be obtained from 12 stakes after only four days of deformation. The least-squares procedure may also aid airborne photogrammetric surveys in that reducing the time interval between survey and re-survey could permit better surface-feature recognition.

The wave of cold temperature, which begins to propagate into a snow field during the winter, may be considerably enhanced by the thermal blanketing of snow accumulating on the surface. This effect is discussed theoretically by means of calculations based on the mathematical theory of the conduction of heat in solids. The results of these calculations show that for an assumed steady velocity of accumulation at the rate of 4 meters/year or 8 meters/year, the winter cold wave should assume significantly larger proportions than in the absence of accumulation.

Two flood waves from the terminus of Peyto Glacier occurred as a result of very high precipitation in early July 1983 and a landslide which exposed a large section of ice-cored moraine. The flood waves induced erosion, and subsequent melt, of the moraine and deposited an estimated 6000 m3 of gravel in the valley. The majority of the deposition occurred in an area approximately 200 m × 20 m to depths of 3 m at the site of the National Hydrology Research Institute gauging station 1 km from the glacier terminus. The initial flood washed away most of the equipment from the site and the gravel deposition totally destroyed the rest of the installation. These events appear to be unique in the period that hydrological records have been maintained for Peyto Creek.
