Three glaciers in Switzerland, Griesgletscher, Oberaargletscher and Vadrec da l’Albigna, terminate in lakes recently impounded for hydro-electricity generation. Calving at their snouts has produced excellent cross-sections which enable one to study the structures along almost complete vertical profiles when the lakes are empty. Each of the glacier cliffs displays a shallow synclinal structure which, by comparison with surface structures, is interpreted as the vertical expression of an arcuate foliation, originating in or below an ice fall or an area of transverse crevassing. Extensive minor folding of an earlier layering is associated with this foliation. Well-developed longitudinal foliation exposed at the surface is sometimes visible in these vertical sections, indicating that the structure can form at depth.

Monocrystals of ice grown from NaCl solutions (concentration 5 X 10–4 to 10–2 mol/l) have been tested in creep at —10°C by basal glide. The maximum resolved shear stress ranged from 0.6 to 2.5 bar. The resulting creep curves show a deceleration, that is, the creep rate decreases with time. At the highest concentration the creep is essentially transient; the strain tends to a fixed value. This is unlike the behaviour of similarly orientated monocrystals of pure ice or of ice grown from solutions of other dopants so far reported in the literature.

The possible causes for this behaviour are discussed and the implications for the mechanical properties of polycrystalline ice, and in particular sea ice and glacier ice, are described.

Repeat-pass L-band interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) data for part of Hielo Patagónico Sur, Chile, were collected by the space-shuttle-based Spaceborne Imaging Radar C (SIR-C) over a 4 day span in October 1994. Three co-registered complex SAR images are used to generate phase-coherence maps, a digital elevation model (DEM) and an ice-velocity map. The phase-coherence maps indicate low coherence in the 5–15 km approaching the termini due to large displacements, ice deformation and melting. However, the coherence is high over nearly all of the remaining imaged icefield. Ice-velocity precision is greater than 2 cm d−1, while the DEM is good to about 25 m. A flow divide between two of the glaciers is mapped by locating a narrow band of near-zero ice velocity. Horizontal ice-surface velocity profiles calculated along flowlines show there is a high degree of spatial variability reaching a peak value of 5.5 m d−1 located 3.5 km from the terminus of Glaciar Europa. Longitudinal strain rates along the center lines calculated from these velocities at the locations of the initiation of crevassing are used to compute the tensile strength of ice (169–224 kPa).

Interlocking rectangular ice patterns, with dimensions of several metres, on the surface of a perennial frozen lake in East Antarctica can be related to a strong crystallographic orientation in the underlying ice. Most of the surface patterns are characterized by parallel centimetre-scale ridges and furrows that correspond to an aggregate of tabular-shaped grains. Grain elongation is parallel to the basal plane. The c-axis distribution within each ice pattern lies in a horizontal plane. It defines a discrete maximum perpendicular to the surface ridges and to the long axis of the rectangular pattern. Areas exhibiting no patterning are composed of variably orientated ice grains. The strong c-axis horizontal orientation and the distinctive morphology of these ice patterns are interpreted as having developed by a geometric enhancement over a long period of time.

The shallow ice approximation for glaciers and ice sheets is a degenerate model in which the ice surface slope at the margin may be infinite. This result is due to the neglect of the otherwise small longitudinal stress terms. Here we derive a corrected approximation for the basal shear stress, and show that the resulting model provides an explanation for the observed finite slope margins.

A new method for measuring ice tunnel deformation and closure is described. It includes cutting slots into a smooth vertical wall, forcing wet dyed string into the slots and freezing it in. Results of one year’s installation are given for each of 13 grids installed throughout a 366 m. ice tunnel. Two important visual observations are reported. The first is that no differential shearing was found; and the second, that heavy dirt bands that occurred throughout the tunnel appeared to have extruded into the tunnel opening. A possible explanation is that dirty ice is more plastic than clear ice.

A comprehensive survey of the Larsen Ice Shelf has been conducted using precise orbit and retracked Seasat radar-altimeter data with editing of erroneous values resulting from intrumental artefacts. Contour maps of elevation and radar back-scatter (with absolute accuracies of 1 m and 2 dB, respectively) have been produced and it has also been possible to map rifts, grounding points, rough terrain, and about 30% of the ice shelf’s seaward margin. Ice thicknesses derived from these elevation data show broad agreement with those derived from previous airborne radio-echo surveys. The maps of parameters measured by Seasat represent a very substantial improvement over those previously available. They thus provide a reference against which comparison may be made with a view to detecting substantial climatic changes. This is of particular interest since, as the most northerly major ice shelf in Antarctica, the Larsen Ice Shelf may be more sensitive than others to global climatic trends.

The Gorge du Guil (Hautes-Alpes) might be regarded as a typical example of a post-glacial gorge. In fact, this is not the case. Systematic and very detailed observations based on maps of the scale of 1 : 5,000 have revealed that the greatest part of the excavation of the defiles, cut across the bands of massive rocks, was accomplished by subglacial melt waters. Remnants of glacial deposits containing well-rounded pebbles, but whose finer constituents have been largely removed, occur a few metres above the present valley floor in each of these defiles. The down-cutting was very powerful, being facilitated by the crevassing of the ice, which was at the most 300 m. thick, over the ridges and in the constricted sections of the valley, and by the load carried in the englacial melt water. The sheltered and sunny climate, and the situation of the area below the limit of permanent snow also favoured erosion by melt water. By comparison, post-glacial down-cutting has been slight, not exceeding some ten metres in the massive strata, and appears to have been far less rapid than the subglacial erosion.

We report on the radiative transfer process and optical properties of sea ice in the thermal infrared (TIR) band, presenting two new linear kernel driver models (Relative Emissivity Distribution Function, REDF) that describe TIR emission characteristics of smooth and rough ice. In order to test the models and determine the necessary coefficients, in situ measurements from the Bohai Sea were carried out during the 2011/12 and 2012/13 boreal winters. The results show that the relative emissivity of smooth sea ice decreases along with increasing viewing zenith angle, and the shape of the relative emissivity curve is similar to that of an ideal plane. Affected by parameters such as roughness and surface temperature distribution, the anisotropy of relative emissivity of sea ice with a high degree of roughness is stronger relative to the cosine emitter. The model coefficients were also obtained using a robust regression method based on the measured data. The presented models are more practical than the numerical radiative transfer model and can be used for multi-angular TIR remote sensing.

Studies were made of the correlation between the crystallographic axes and the shape of an individual single crystal of a crystalline aggregate in a temperate glacier and an Antarctic deep core, both of which have the typical fabric pattern of the four-maxima type, by approximating the crystal shape to an ellipsoid and then measuring misorientations between the axes of the ellipsoid and the crystallographic axes of the crystal. The result shows that the crystallographic axes are correlated with the axes of the ellipsoid; that is, in most cases the longest and the shortest axis of the ellipsoid are coincident with one of the a-axes and the c-axis of a crystal, respectively.

Observations on the distribution and movement of the pack ice around Antarctica. These are based mainly on the work of the “Discovery” Committee’s ships between 1925 and 1939, but also include observations from the pelagic whaling fleet for the years 5930–36. The seasonal advance and retreat of the pack ice are considered in detail and information is given of conditions at the ice edge throughout the year. The movement, or drift, of the pack ice is thought to be closely connected with the surface waters around the Antarctic Continent and a brief account of these currents is included. Some outstanding problems are mentioned in connexion with future research and attention is drawn to the need for air reconnaissance.
