The geometry and thermal structure of western Greenland ice sheet are known to have undergone relatively substantial change over the Holocene. Evolution of the frozen and melted fractions of the bed associated with the ice-sheet retreat over this time frame remains unclear. We address this question using a thermo-mechanically coupled flowline model to simulate a 11 ka period of ice-sheet retreat in west central Greenland. Results indicate an episode of ~100 km of terminus retreat corresponded to ~16 km of upstream frozen/melted basal boundary migration. The majority of migration of the frozen area is associated with the enhancement of the frictional and strain heating fields, which are accentuated toward the retreating ice margin. The thermally active bedrock layer acts as a heat sink, tending to slow contraction of frozen-bed conditions. Since the bedrock heat flux in our region is relatively low compared to other regions of the ice sheet, the frozen region is relatively greater and therefore more susceptible to marginward changes in the frictional and strain heating fields. Migration of melted regions thus depends on both geometric changes and the antecedent thermal state of the bedrock and ice, both of which vary considerably around the ice sheet.

Results of petrographic and fabric analysis of fine-grained cold ice from the tongue of Meserve Glacier, Antarctica, are described. Most of the basal ice is remarkably uniform in texture and shows an optic-axis fabric with a single strong maximum, which is consistent with the steady-state conditions of flow. Within 0.5 m of the ice–rock interface, irregularities in the bed cause flow perturbations which are correlated with recrystallization and changes in fabric of the ice. Optic-axis fabrics in the basal ice show close symmetry relationships with dimensional fabric and deformation symmetry. Grain-size of the ice increases towards the surface of the glacier and the single maximum of the optic-axis fabric undergoes a rotation about the flow vector. In the near surface, where strain-rates are relatively much lower, the optic-axis fabric symmetry is not closely related to either deformation symmetry or the dimensional fabric. Syntectonic recrystallization of ice throughout the glacier tongue characteristically produces a strong single-maximum fabric, the orientation of which in relation to the stress field is apparently determined by stress level. Under steady-state conditions of flow, the strength of the maximum also appears to be a function of stress level.

The Arctic is a hotspot for climate warming, making it crucial to quantify the sea level rise contribution from its ice masses. Novaya Zemlya's ice caps are the largest glacier complex in Europe and are a major contributor to contemporary sea level rise. Here we show that Novaya Zemlya outlet glaciers on the Barents Sea coast respond rapidly and consistently to oceanic forcing at annual timescales, likely due to their exposure to Atlantic Water variability. Glaciers on the Kara Sea show more variable response, likely reflecting their reduced exposure to Atlantic Water. Data demonstrate that the pause in glacier retreat previously observed on Novaya Zemlya between 2013 and 2015 has not persisted and that these changes correspond to ocean temperature variability on the Barents Sea coast. We document a marked shift to warmer air and ocean temperatures, and reduced sea ice concentrations from 2005 onwards. Although we identify ocean warming as the primary trigger for glacier retreat, we suggest that multi-year thinning, driven by the shift towards warmer air temperatures since 2005, pre-conditioned Novaya Zemlya's glaciers to retreat. Despite commonality in the timing of outlet glacier retreat, the magnitude is highly variable during rapid retreat phases, which we attribute to glacier-specific factors.

In metamorphic rocks a sharp distinction between planar structures (e g. in schiste) and layered structures (e.g. in banded gneisses) is generally made. This same distinction has not been maintained in descriptions of analogous structures in glacial ice. At least part of the problem lies with the use of the term foliation, which, unfortunately, has been applied to both types of structures. On historical and etymological grounds, as well as on the basis of widespread acceptance by petrologists and structural geologists, it is argued that foliation should apply to planar structures in both rocks and glacial ice.

We present a re-analysis of the results obtained from a series of measurements on freshwater and saline ice beams under various centrifugal accelerations. The data show a strong influence of beam size, brine volume and centrifugal acceleration on the elastic modulus of ice. The data suggest a transition brine volume at around 9%, which might occur close to the melting point, at which the elastic modulus of ice drops rapidly due to a possible change of brine-pocket structure. Furthermore, for brine volumes less than 9%, there is a negligible increase in the elastic modulus measured under high centrifugal acceleration, but for brine volumes more than 9% the increase is considerable, approaching that measured with freshwater ice. This may be due to necking of brine drainage channels just above the ice/water interface at high centrifugal acceleration. A model of sea ice was constructed based on existing theories of brine inclusions in sea ice, which satisfactorily predicts the observed trends.

Two isotropic points measured by Meier and others (1985) on Columbia Glacier, Alaska, are examined. The pattern classification of the upper one is on the borderline between monstar and lemon, and this is traced to the fact that the variation of strain-rate in the longitudinal direction is approximately equal to that in the transverse direction, contrary to the assumption made in Nye (1983). The conditions for the lower isotropic point to have the star pattern, as observed, are believed to be typical for a glacier that ends in an ice cliff, like this one, which calves icebergs. Where, as in this case, there is only a small transverse velocity, the isotropic points on a glacier must nearly coincide with stationary points for the speed, and these are almost always either maxima or saddles, alternating. The maxima correspond to lemon or monstar patterns, and the saddles to star patterns.

Satellite imagery has substantially improved the quality of sea-ice observation over the last decades. Therefore, for a 25 year period, a statistical study based on the monthly Arctic sea-ice data and the monthly mean 700 mbar maps of the Northern Hemisphere was carried out to establish the relationships between sea-ice conditions and the general circulation of the atmosphere. It was found that sea-ice conditions have two opposing effects on the zonal circulation intensity, depending on the season. Heavier than normal ice in winter causes stronger than normal zonal circulation in the subsequent months, whereas heavier than normal ice in the summer-fall causes weaker zonal circulation in the subsequent months. Analyzing the two sectors, the Atlantic and Pacific ones separately, a negative correlation was found, which means a heavy ice year in the Atlantic Ocean is normally associated with a light one in the Pacific Ocean and vice versa.

It has for some time been obvious that far-reaching results could be obtained by penetrating right through a glacier to its bed. The expense however has always been prohibitive. Recently however Dr. H. Carol, of Zürich, had the ingenious but simple idea of going down through a glacier by means of a glacier pot-hole and has described his experiences in Les Alpes, 1945 (pp. 180–84).

Cirque-like features, occurring on the western flank of Shawangunk Mountain in south-east New York State, are unique in the area. Though these topographic forms are apparently the product of periglacial and glacial processes, their initiation and subsequent development were dependent to a considerable extent on a specific set of jointing and bedding attitudes and differential lithologies.

Holes drilled into thin areas of the Brunt Ice Shelf encounter a layer of liquid brine less than 1 m thick approximately at sea-level. Assuming the brine to be moving horizontally, analysis of its effects on thermal equilibrium gives an estimate of steady-state annual brine flow that is in good agreement with the value deduced from a percolation model. The effect of firn density on percolation rates is such that the slope of an active brine layer increases rapidly as ice thickness increases. However, the heat transport model predicts that brine layers are unlikely to be active in both very thick and very thin ice shelves.

In sub-level caving mining operations, the lateral walls cave in. This results in dilution of the mineral content of the produced ore by 15%-20% waste rock. Also 15%-20% of the valuable ores are lost in the caved wall material that is left behind in the mined-out rooms. Placing ice, in the form of a small glacier, in the mine-room before the lateral walls start to cave, permit complete recovery of ore reserves without dilution. The glacier will advance at a rate permitted by ore extraction processes, in accordance with glaciological theories and laws.

Volumes of ice that are required may be calculated from ore extraction rates, power consumed in the mine, ventilating air volumes and temperatures, specific heat and thermal conductivity of the lateral rock. The required ice volumes can be produced through natural freezing of water, where the winter temperatures regularly fall below 0°C for a predictable period every winter. Use of ice as a mining aid reduces costs of the ore extraction process by about one-third and increases value of the produced ore by about 20%. Thus, the value of a given orebody is increased by about 30% relative to the values experienced in the most efficient mines of today.

The study of subglacial movements taking place in regions of cavitation beneath the Glacier d’Argentière, has demonstrated the necessity for using several cavitometers. The very unusual conditions in which such apparatus is installed to measure simultaneously the velocity and the position of the ice vault have led us to design and produce a prototype of a portable cavitometer which records the data on magnetic tape (cassettes).

A morainal sequence in south-west Yukon Territory, Canada, records at least four major, successively less extensive glaciations from ice fields in the St. Elias Mountains south of the glaciated area.

The Nisling Moraine flanks the Klondike Plateau in a belt t km. wide to an altitude of 1,040 m., 12 km. north-east of Snag. The northernmost lobe of this moraine terminates at the junction of the Donjek and White Rivers, 120 km, from the nearest source of ice, Klutlan Glacier. 11 km. north-east of Snag, the prominent front of the Donjek Moraine lies 180 m. below the front of the Nisling Moraine. The northernmost lobe of the Donjek Moraine terminates 106 km. north of Klutlan Glacier and occupies the lower courses of canyons cut into the Nisling Moraine. The front of the Snag Moraine crosses the White River valley 210 m. below the front of the Donjek Moraine and 96 km. north of Klutlan Glacier. The Tchawsahmon Moraine, 38 km. north-west of Klutlan Glacier. consists of a series of concentric ridges, the oldest of which impounded Tchawsahmon Lake.

Provisional correlations suggest that the Nisling Moraine is pre-Illinoian; the Donjek, Illinoian; the Snag, pre-classical Wisconsin; and the Tchawsahmon, classical Wisconsin.

For the observation of areal snow-depth distribution over a wide area, such as the Ishikari Plain in Hokkaido, Japan, existing telephone poles were used in place of the snow scales. Telephone pole number plates (telephone poles in Japan have number plates) were photographed by a 35 mm camera with zoom lens ranging from 80 mm to 200 mm through the window of the observation vehicle. The snow depth was calculated by the ratios of the length of the number plates to the distance between the lower edge of the number plates and the snow surface. Since measurements by direct sounding using a rod as compared with the values by the above method showed a good coincidence with an accuracy of ± 10 cm, it was considered satisfactory for snow depth observation over a wide area.

A linear model was used to investigate the behaviour of the Italian Western Tauri glaciers as a result of temperature changes projected for the 21st century. The model estimates the temperature variations once the glacier snout length variations are known and vice versa: it estimates the glacier snout length variations once the air temperature variations are known or predicted. The 46 glaciers of the Italian Western Tauri, 35 (76%) of which have areas smaller than 0.5 km2 and only 7 (15%) larger than 1 km2, are mostly mountain type glaciers and only three are presently valley glaciers. The model has been forced by the air temperature projections of the A1B emission scenario, which indicates an increase in temperature of 2.7°C from 2015 to 2100. The results show a shortening of more than 35% for mountain glaciers by 2100 with a surface loss of more than 60% and smaller reductions for valley glaciers. The consequent fragmentation into smaller units would lead to the extinction of 95% of the existing glaciers by the end of the century, possibly leaving only the valley glaciers surviving.
