The average yearly net ablation rate on permanently ice-covered Lake Fryxell, Victoria Land, Antarctica, is 30 to 40 cm. This figure was calculated by a novel method utilizing a record of ablation which is incorporated in the ice cover of the lake. These values are higher than those measured on Ross Island 80 km. to the east; the difference in ablation rates for the two areas is attributed to the prevalence of katabatic winds in the climate of Taylor Valley. The Lake Fryxell ablation figure is applied to nearby Canada and Commonwealth Glaciers in the calculation of their ice budgets.

Winter observations in the northern Rocky Mountains of Montana show two periods during which one may expect a collapsing snowpack and accompanying avalanches: (1) shaded and sheltered areas: December-February; (2) sunny and exposed areas: March-May. These periods appear to be linked in part to the cyclic rise and fall of strength in the basal snow layer. It is suggested that sheltered slopes are often about a half-cycle ahead of sunny slopes because sheltered slopes tend to retain the early snows which later become the critically weak basal layer on these slopes.

Measurements of snow properties across and down snow slopes have been used to calculate a safety margin — the difference between the basal shear strength and the applied static stress. Areas of basal deficit exist when the applied shear stress exceeds the basal shear strength (the safety margin is negative), and basal areas are pinned when the safety margin is positive. As the size of deficit increases, stresses within the overlying slab also increase, and these may be sufficient to cause an avalanche.

Measurements made on five slopes (four of which had avalanched) were characterized by considerable spatial variability, and the safety margin has been treated as a random function which varies over the slope. Statistical models of Vanmarcke (1977[a], 1983) have been applied to determine the most likely size of deficit required for avalanching (95% confidence). In one case, an avalanche occurred when the length of deficit was only 2.9 m, and in the other cases the length was always less than 7 m. This size of deficit is small compared with the total area of many avalanche slopes which suggests that avalanches initiate from small zones of deficit, and makes it difficult to locate a deficit with just a few tests.

The optimum sampling interval and number of tests required to yield an adequate estimate of the statistical parameters of the safety margin are also discussed.

We seek to infer the velocities within a cylindrical valley glacier from measured surface velocities. In the Newtonian viscous case, an explicit finite-difference scheme does not fulfil von Neumann’s condition for numerical stability. How this fact does not contradict the existence of Somigliana’s analytical solution is explained. A procedure is given which delays the onset of instability and allows velocities at shallow depths to be determined.

The relations between geodetic measurements of the surface level variations Δh and net budget measurements by stakes arc discussed. In 1961, 24 yr. after Finsterwalder’s survey, Tunsbergdalsbreen, the largest and most regular of the 26 outlet glaciers of Jostedalsbreen, was re-surveyed. The variations in the length, area, ice thickness, and volume of its tongue are shown. The lake Brimkjelen was 99 m. deep in 1937; it disappeared in 1949. From 1900–40 the whole Jostedalsbre lost 0.4 m./yr., about the same amount as the glaciers of the eastern Alps. The ice thickness of the Tunsbergdalsbre tongue diminished by −ΔhA = 0.46+0.0022 (1500−A) m./yr. from 1937–61; for the eastern Alps from 1920–50 −ΔhA ≈ 0.53+0.0021 (2850−A) m./yr. where A is the altitude. The change of Δh with altitude is much the same. The amounts of the retreat of the Alpine glaciers, of Tunsbergdalshreen, and at Werenskioldbreen, Vestspitsbergen, were the greater the higher the latitude. The numerical relations between Δh, net budget, and ice movement are shown. The temporary velocity transverse profile of 1937 served as a prototype for the streaming mode of flow, but in 1961 the glacier partially showed Blockschollen movement, although the velocity had decreased by more than 30 per cent. The article is accompanied by a map showing ice surface contours in 1937 and 1961.

Observations in the glaciological pit of Little America III (1939–41), carried out in March 1957 and in January 1958, are discussed. Of particular interest is the analysis of the settling of firn over a period of 17.6 years. The observed data, including those of Wade taken in 1940 and of Howard in 1947, were fitted best by a logarithmic expression, which proved useful as an interpolation formula. From the computed values of the rate of settling, and the observed density-depth relation, the average accumulation is calculated, using Sorge’s law. For the undisturbed period 1947–58 an average annual accumulation of 19 g./cm.2 is found for Little America III (position in 1958 about lat. 78° 26′ S., long. 163° 52′ W.).

A Tertiary tillite occurs at an altitude of 2750 m on Mount Feather in southern Victoria Land. The tillite mantles a remnant of the floor of a south-east-trending glacial valley that pre-dates the cutting of the existing glacial drainage system in southern Victoria Land. Petrographic evidence suggests that ice which deposited the tillite drained a relatively distant source area.

The volume of ice that flows annually from the Skelton Glacier on the west side of the Ross Ice Shelf between the Worcester and Royal Society Ranges was determined during 1958–59 traverse operations to be approximately 791 × 106 m.3 or 712 × 106 m.3 water equivalent. Annual accumulation on the Skelton névé field and small cirque glaciers is estimated to be 1,018 × 106 m.3 water equivalent, but this figure can be reduced to 712 × 106 m.3 by assuming that 30 per cent of the expected accumulation in the lower slopes of the glacier is lost to adjacent areas of the Ross Ice Shelf by katabatic winds. It is evident that little or no contribution to the nourishment of the Skelton Glacier comes from the high plateau area of East Antarctica. It is suggested that this condition exists generally in the western Ross Sea and Ross Shelf area, and is responsible for the existence of the present “dry” valleys in the McMurdo Sound area.

Some estimates of local ice regime are made at two sites on the glacier where ice thickness and strain rates are known.

Climatic change occurs over a wide range of time scales. Each glacier responds in a unique fashion to this spectrum of climatic forcings. The response of the extent of the Lewis Glacier terminus to sinusoidal fluctuation in the net balance is calculated. The net balance versus elevation profile is separately translated along the orthogonal balance and elevation axes. Net balance amplitudes of 0.1 to 0.5 m a−1 of ice and 10 to 50 m elevation, respectively, and periods ranging from 20 to 1000 years are covered. The time lag between forcing and terminus response is dependent on applied period, reaching a maximum of about 30 years at 1000 years period, but is independent of applied amplitude. For the shorter applied periods the response amplitude increases rapidly with period but asymptotically approaches a maximum at periods above approximately 200 years; it is linearly dependent on applied amplitude. Consideration of the Lewis Glacier response taken in perspective with similar results for other alpine glaciers identifies general characteristics of the terminus response.

The north-west margin of the main ice cap in south-western Ellesmere Island is fringed by ice-cored moraines. The formation of these moraines seems to be more complex than simple upwarping of the foliation bands at the margin of the ice cap. At one locality, where outer and inner zones can be distinguished on the basis of lithological composition, debris in the outer zone is composed of material from farther back under the ice cap than debris in the inner zone. In another locality, localized ridges cross each other independently of the trend of the main ridge.

The time required to obtain the quantity of debris forming the moraine at the ice surface is estimated to be between 65 and 300 years.

18O and deuterium content was measured in snow and ice samples collected from two crevasses on temperate glaciers high in the Andes and in the Himalaya. The results show that, due to intense exposure to sun, a significant part of the annual accumulation of snow is removed by melting and sublimation, the latter being predominant. There is strong empirical evidence that in natural conditions which are characteristic of both the glaciers studied sublimation of the snow cover can be approximated by the thermodynamic equilibrium process. The short-term fluctuations, though slightly moderated, and longer-term variations can still be observed in the deeper parts of the glaciers in spite of firnification of the snow.

Previous work on the relation between glacier volume and area and on accumulation area ratios suggests that balance rates measured at the glacier terminus are not constant or random from glacier to glacier but instead scale with glacier length. Using mass-balance data from a collection of 68 valley and cirque glaciers, we show that the terminus mass-balance rate scales roughly linearly with surface area and scales with length raised to an exponent constrained to fall roughly between 0.5 and 2 with 1.7 preferred if a glacier’s length is dependent on the mass-balance conditions (rather than balance being dependent on length). When these exponents are used to predict valley-glacier volume–area scaling, the results are very close to empirical volume–area observations. Although the data are noisy and the proposed fits could be modified by improved observations, the scaling trend for terminus balance vs length remains clear. Although the exact value of the scaling exponent is not well determined, establishing the existence of this scaling relation will be important for studies of climate change and the impact of glacier recession on sea level.

Dye-tracer techniques are widely used in infer the character of subglacial drainage systems. Quantitative analysis of dye breakthrough curves focuses on the determination of the water through flow velocity (u), the dispersion coefficient (D) and the dispersivity parameter (d = D/u). Together, these parameters describe the rate of passage of tracer through the drainage system and the extent to which the dye cloud becomes spread out during passage. They have been used to infer the nature of flow conditions within a drainage system and temporal changes in system morphology. Estimates of all three parameters, however, are dependent upon the sampling interval at which measurements of dye concentration used to define breakthrough curves are made. For a given breakthrough curve, the dispersion coefficient increases with the sampling interval, while the through flow velocity shows no systematic variation. As a result, the dispersivity also tends to increase with the sampling interval. Investigations of the sensitivity of parameter estimates to the sampling interval reveal that reliable estimates can be obtained only if the sampling interval is less than 1/16 of the time from dye injection to peak dye concentration. As a general guide, we Suggest that, ideally, quantitative analyses of dye breakthrough curves should therefore be conducted only when this criterion can be met.

Ice samples from a 121 m core, representing the total thickness of the Meighen Ice Cap near its highest point, were studied for ice fabric, firn- and dirt-layer distribution. The absence of a strongly preferred fabric between the surface and the base of the ice cap at the core site suggests an absence of past or present ice movement at this point. From the variations of ice texture, am- and dirt-layer distribution with depth it is concluded that the ice cap post-dates the climatic optimum and has never been much thicker than it is at present. There is a possible relic ablation surface at a depth of 50 m which is estimated to be at least 500–600 years old.
