This study reports the first time-resolved particle image velocimetry characterization of a planar two-phase mixing layer flow, whose velocity field is measured simultaneously in gas and liquid streams. Two parallel air and water flows meet downstream of a splitter plate, giving rise to an initially spanwise invariant configuration. The aim is to elucidate further the mechanisms leading to the flow breakup in gas-assisted atomization. The complete experimental characterization of the velocity field represents a database that could be used in data-driven reduced-order models to investigate the global behaviour of the flow system. After the analysis of a selected reference case, a parametric study of the flow behaviour is performed by varying the liquid ($Re_l$) and gas ($Re_g$) Reynolds numbers, and as a consequence also the gas-to-liquid dynamic pressure ratio ($M$), shedding light on both time-averaged (mean) and unsteady velocity fields. In the reference case, it is shown that the mean flow exhibits a wake region just downstream of the splitter plate, followed by the development of a mixing layer. By increasing both $Re_l$ and $Re_g$, the streamwise extent of the wake decreases and eventually vanishes, the flow resulting in a pure mixing layer regime. The spectral analysis of the normal-to-flow velocity fluctuations outlines different flow regimes by variation of the governing parameters, giving more insights into the global characteristics of the flow field. As a major result, it is found that at high $Re_g$ and $M$ values, the velocity fluctuations are characterized by low-frequency temporal oscillations synchronized in several locations within the flow field, which suggest the presence of a global mode of instability. The proper orthogonal decomposition of velocity fluctuations, performed in both gas and liquid phases, reveals finally that the synchronized oscillations are associated with a low-frequency dominant flapping mode of the gas–liquid interface. Higher-order modes correspond to interfacial wave structures travelling with the so-called Dimotakis velocity. For lower gas Reynolds numbers, the leading modes describe higher frequency fingers shedding at the interface.

We study a thin, laterally confined heated liquid layer subjected to mechanical parametric forcing without gravity. In the absence of parametric forcing, the liquid layer exhibits the Marangoni instability, provided the temperature difference across the layer exceeds a threshold. This threshold varies with the perturbation wavenumber, according to a curve with two minima, which correspond to long- and short-wave instability modes. The most unstable mode depends on the lateral confinement of the liquid layer. In wide containers, the long-wave mode is typically observed, and this can lead to the formation of dry spots. We focus on this mode, as the short-wave mode is found to be unaffected by parametric forcing. We use linear stability analysis and nonlinear computations based on a reduced-order model to investigate how parametric forcing can prevent the formation of dry spots. At low forcing frequencies, the liquid film can be rendered linearly stable within a finite range of forcing amplitudes, which decreases with increasing frequency and ultimately disappears at a cutoff frequency. Outside this range, the flow becomes unstable to either the Marangoni instability (for small amplitudes) or the Faraday instability (for large amplitudes). At high frequencies, beyond the cutoff frequency, linear stabilization through parametric forcing is not possible. However, a nonlinear saturation mechanism, occurring at forcing amplitudes below the Faraday instability threshold, can greatly reduce the film surface deformation and therefore prevent dry spots. Although dry spots can also be avoided at larger forcing amplitudes, this comes at the expense of generating large-amplitude Faraday waves.

Rotational effects are commonly neglected when considering the dynamics of freely rising or settling isotropic particles. Here, we demonstrate that particle rotations play an important role for rising as well as for settling cylinders in situations when mass eccentricity, and thereby a new pendulum time scale, is introduced to the system. We employ two-dimensional simulations to study the motion of a single cylinder in a quiescent unbounded incompressible Newtonian fluid. This allows us to vary the Galileo number, density ratio, relative moment of inertia (MOI) and centre-of-mass (COM) offset systematically and beyond what is feasible experimentally. For certain buoyant density ratios, the particle dynamics exhibits a resonance mode, during which the coupling via the Magnus lift force causes a positive feedback between translational and rotational motions. This mode results in vastly different trajectories with significantly larger rotational and translational amplitudes and an increase of the drag coefficient easily exceeding a factor two. We propose a simple model that captures how the occurrence of the COM offset induced resonance regime varies, depending on the other input parameters, specifically the density ratio, the Galileo number and the relative MOI. Remarkably, depending on the input parameters, resonance can be observed for COM offsets as small as a few per cent of the particle diameter, showing that the particle dynamics can be highly sensitive to this parameter.

Splashing of impacting drops produces a myriad of secondary spray droplets, which generate aerosols during rain on the ocean and can cause health hazards during the spraying of pesticides or enhance the droplet transmission of disease. Determining the size and number of the finest splashed droplets is therefore of practical interest. Herein, we use a novel experimental facility with a 26 m tall vacuum tube, to study well-controlled drop impacts at velocities as high as 22 m s$^{-1}$, where we reach parameter regimes not studied before using freely falling drops. Using extreme video frame rates, we pinpoint the primary source of the finest spray, coming from the catastrophic bending and rupture of the sub-micron-thick ejecta sheet, which emerges at a high speed from the neck connecting the drop and pool. The axisymmetric bending and convoluted ejecta shapes are driven primarily by resistance from the surrounding air, but also depend on the viscosity difference between drop and pool, which influences the initial ejection angle of the sheet. These extreme impact conditions provide new insights into general spray formation, through a sequence of bucklings of the rising ejecta, which dances next to the drop surface and can also form an enclosed air torus.

The tangential strain rate in premixed flames impacts significantly the flame surface area generation and thus the combustion process. Studies on incompressible isotropic turbulence have revealed that the mean tangential strain rate at material and iso-scalar surfaces is positive and exhibits a universal value when normalized by the Kolmogorov time. This is associated with the preferential alignment of the surface normal with the most compressive principal strain rate. The present study investigates such effects in premixed hydrogen and iso-octane flame kernels using direct numerical simulations. It is shown that the normalized mean tangential strain rate of the investigated flames has a very similar value compared with the incompressible flows. However, in the reaction zone, the flame surface normal aligns preferentially with the most extensive principal strain rate. Furthermore, this alignment depends on the reaction progress variable and the Lewis number, while the tangential strain rate remains independent of these parameters. Such counter-intuitive behaviour is systematically investigated by decomposing the effects of dilatation and residual solenoidal turbulence. It is found that the solenoidal turbulence influences significantly the tangential strain rate. A general effect of turbulence on the tangential strain rate is identified, which is consistent with incompressible flows and independent of the Lewis number and the reaction progress variable. This is a remarkable finding indicating that models of the tangential strain rate developed based on incompressible flows apply also to premixed flames with different Lewis numbers, and, for the modelling, only the solenoidal turbulence should be considered.

Industrial applications of flow through fractures such as geothermal energy or hydraulic stimulation involve forcing large flow rates through small fractures, thereby inducing inertial fluid behaviours and turbulence. The most common fracture flow model, Poiseuille flow (the cubic law), is incapable of capturing these phenomena and thus the impact of inertial and turbulent forces in fracture flow has remained relatively unexplored. The GG22 flow model is a newly derived fracture flow model that is capable of capturing inertial, transient and turbulent forces. In this article, we apply the GG22 flow model to hydraulic stimulation of radial fractures for the first time to determine how these phenomena manifest. We show that inertia and turbulence only manifest near the wellbore (within 30 radii) and lead to changes in fracture shape and injection pressure but have little impact on tip behaviour. Turbulence increases wellbore pressure and aperture while inertia decreases wellbore pressure and aperture. The majority of the pressure loss along the fracture occurs near the wellbore and is captured by turbulence where entrance correction factors would otherwise be needed. Using water, turbulence is the dominant mechanism that causes departures from Poiseuille flow at high $Re$. The solution departs immediately upon the manifestation of turbulence ($Re\geq 2\times 10^3$), while inertial effects manifest at higher flow rates ($Re\geq 2\times 10^4$). Using slickwater, the opposite trend is observed: inertial effects manifest first ($Re\geq 5\times 10^3$), while turbulent effects are delayed ($Re\geq 10^4$). In both cases, the threshold for departures from the Poiseuille flow solution are low and the differences are large.

Beneitez et al. (Phys. Rev. Fluids, vol. 8, 2023, L101901) have recently discovered a new linear ‘polymer diffusive instability’ (PDI) in inertialess rectilinear viscoelastic shear flow using the finitely extensible nonlinear elastic constitutive model of Peterlin (FENE-P) when polymer stress diffusion is present. Here, we examine the impact of inertia on the PDI for both plane Couette and plane Poiseuille flows under varying Weissenberg number ${W}$, polymer stress diffusivity $\varepsilon$, solvent-to-total viscosity ratio $\beta$ and Reynolds number ${Re}$, considering the FENE-P and simpler Oldroyd-B constitutive relations. Both the prevalence of the instability in parameter space and the associated growth rates are found to significantly increase with ${Re}$. For instance, as $Re$ increases with $\beta$ fixed, the instability emerges at progressively lower values of $W$ and $\varepsilon$ than in the inertialess limit, and the associated growth rates increase linearly with $Re$ when all other parameters are fixed. For finite $Re$, it is also demonstrated that the Schmidt number $Sc=1/(\varepsilon Re)$ collapses curves of neutral stability obtained across various $Re$ and $\varepsilon$. The observed strengthening of PDI with inertia and the fact that stress diffusion is always present in time-stepping algorithms, either implicitly as part of the scheme or explicitly as a stabilizer, implies that the instability is likely operative in computational work using the popular Oldroyd-B and FENE-P constitutive models. The fundamental question now is whether PDI is physical and observable in experiments, or is instead an artifact of the constitutive models that must be suppressed.

In this paper we discuss the dynamics of vorticity at partial-slip boundaries. We consider the total vector circulation, which includes both the total vorticity of the fluid and the slip velocity at the boundary (the interface vortex sheet). The generation of vector circulation is an inviscid process, which does not depend on either viscosity or the slip length at the boundary. Vector circulation is generated by the inviscid relative acceleration between the fluid and the solid, due to either tangential pressure gradients or tangential acceleration of the partial-slip wall. While the slip length does not affect the creation of vector circulation, it governs how vector circulation is distributed between the total vorticity of the fluid and the interface vortex sheet. Specifically, the partial-slip boundary condition prescribes the ratio between boundary vorticity and the strength of the interface vortex sheet, and the viscous boundary flux transfers vector circulation between the interface vortex sheet and the fluid interior to maintain this condition. The interaction between a vortex ring and a partial-slip wall is examined to highlight various aspects of this formulation. For the head-on collision, the quantity of vector circulation diffused into the fluid as secondary vorticity increases as the slip length is decreased, resulting in a stronger secondary vortex and increased rebound of the vortex ring. For the oblique interaction, the extent to which the vortex ring connects to the boundary increases as the slip length is increased.

Cross-flow transition over a delta wing is systematically studied in a Mach 6.5 hypersonic wind tunnel, employing the Rayleigh scattering flow visualisation, high-speed schlieren and fast-response pressure sensors. Direct numerical simulations and analysis based on linear stability theory under the same flow conditions are applied to analyse the transition mechanism. Three unstable modes are identified: the travelling cross-flow instabilities, the second mode and the low-frequency waves. It is shown that the travelling cross-flow vortices first appear in the cross-flow region near the leading edge of the model. These vortices can modulate the mean profile of the flow, which benefits the growth of second mode. A phase-locked interaction mechanism transfers energy from the cross-flow instabilities to the high-frequency second mode, leading to amplification at the expense of the cross-flow instability. As the second mode grows to a critical amplitude, it triggers a $z$-type secondary instability within a similar frequency range, which introduces secondary finger-like structures connecting to the cross-flow vortex. It is further found that the generation of these finger-like structures is related to the expansion and compression of the second mode. These finger vortices further evolve along the streamwise direction into low-frequency waves and corresponding hairpin-like structures that finally trigger turbulence. An interaction mechanism likely exists between the secondary instability and the low-frequency waves, since their phase speeds are approaching each other. These observations of the interaction mechanism are consistent with those of previous studies on hypersonic boundary layers (Zhang et al., Phys. Fluids, vol. 32 (7), 2020, 071702; Li et al., Phys. Fluids, vol. 32 (5), 2020, 051701).

The interaction between ingested turbulence and rotating blades is a key source of broadband noise in engineering applications. In this paper, a far-field noise model accounting for source correlation across the span of the blade and between blades is developed and applied to the study of homogeneous isotropic turbulence ingestion by a model cooling fan, wind turbine and aircraft propeller. The widely used theory of Amiet is revisited and it is shown that previous works produce conflicting results when attempting to account for blade-to-blade correlation. Central to the model is the calculation of the time between blade chops of the same turbulent eddy as heard by the observer. In this paper it is shown that, when derived correctly, Amiet's theory accounts for correlated sources between blades and, thus, can predict haystacking tones. Comparisons with the new rotational formulation and with experimental data enable us to show that Amiet's theory can be used to accurately predict turbulence ingestion noise from open rotors. In particular, it is found that the infinite-span assumption in strip theory and the neglect of correlation effects across the span do not undermine the accuracy of this theory. This is of great importance because, unlike Amiet's theory, models which treat rotational effects and source correlation exactly are expensive to evaluate routinely at high frequencies due to the slow convergence of infinite series with Bessel functions.

This study extends our previous work (McCloughan & Suslov, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 887, 2020, A23), where the existence of a saddle-node bifurcation of steady axisymmetric electrolyte flows driven by the Lorentz force in a shallow annular domain was first reported. Here we perform further weakly nonlinear analysis over a wider range of the governing parameters to demonstrate that the previously reported saddle-node bifurcation is a local feature of a global fold catastrophe, which, in turn, is a part of cusp catastrophe occurring as the thickness of the fluid layer increases. The amplitude equation characterising multiple flow solutions in the finite vicinity of catastrophe points is derived. The sensitivity of its coefficients and solutions to the distance from the catastrophe points is assessed demonstrating the robustness of the used analytical procedure. The asymptotic flow solution past the catastrophe point is subsequently obtained and its topology is explored confirming the existence of the secondary circulation in the bulk of flow (two-tori background flow structure). The latter is argued to lead to the appearance of experimentally observable vortices on the fluid surface. The rigorous justification of this conjecture is to be given in Part 2 of the study.

For dissolving active oil droplets in an ambient liquid, it is generally assumed that the Marangoni effect results in repulsive interactions, while the buoyancy effects caused by the density difference between the droplets, diffusing product and the ambient fluid are usually neglected. However, it has been observed in recent experiments that active droplets can form clusters due to buoyancy-driven convection (Krüger et al., Eur. Phys. J. E, vol. 39, 2016, pp. 1–9). In this study we numerically analyse the buoyancy effect, in addition to the propulsion caused by Marangoni flow (with its strength characterized by the Péclet number $Pe$). The buoyancy effects have their origin in (i) the density difference between the droplet and the ambient liquid, which is characterized by the Galileo number $Ga$; and (ii) the density difference between the diffusing product (i.e. filled micelles) and the ambient liquid, which can be quantified by a solutal Rayleigh number $Ra$. We analyse how the attracting and repulsing behaviour of neighbouring droplets depends on the control parameters $Pe$, $Ga$ and $Ra$. We find that while the Marangoni effect leads to the well-known repulsion between the interacting droplets, the buoyancy effect of the reaction product leads to buoyancy-driven attraction. At sufficiently large $Ra$, even collisions between the droplets can take place. Our study on the effect of $Ga$ further shows that with increasing $Ga$, the collision becomes delayed. Moreover, we derive that the attracting velocity of the droplets, which is characterized by a Reynolds number $Re_d$, is proportional to $Ra^{1/4}/( \ell /R)$, where $\ell /R$ is the distance between the neighbouring droplets normalized by the droplet radius. Finally, we numerically obtain the repulsive velocity of the droplets, characterized by a Reynolds number $Re_{rep}$, which is proportional to $PeRa^{-0.38}$. The balance of attractive and repulsive effect leads to $Pe\sim Ra^{0.63}$, which agrees well with the transition curve between the regimes with and without collision.

We have developed a parameter-free, two-phase, volume-averaged approach to predictively describe the spin-up flow of dilute, cluster-free ferrofluids excited by low-frequency rotating magnetic fields. Predictive validation of the model was performed through a thorough comparison with local velocity profile measurements, and it demonstrated its ability to capture the spin-up flow dynamics without the need for parameter tuning by carefully delineating the validity domain of the ferrofluid dilutedness conditions. To gain insight into the underlying flow mechanisms, we performed a systematic parametric analysis examining the effects of the induced magnetic field, the dipolar interactions between magnetic nanoparticles and the demagnetizing field. How these mechanisms shape the flow of dilute ferrofluids excited by low-frequency rotating fields in a standard spin-up flow geometry has been addressed using probabilistic nanoparticle orientational dynamics, combining Faxén's laws and the Smoluchowski equation to describe the transport of particle magnetic moments. Our findings revealed that the induced magnetic field is the primary driving force of ferrofluid spin-up flow. The dipole interactions and demagnetizing field, on the other hand, contribute only as secondary phenomena to the overall flow behaviour. Furthermore, we have discussed the potential extension of the two-phase approach, in particular with respect to the formation of chain-like aggregates under the influence of strong magnetic fields. Overall, our study provides valuable insights into the complex dynamics of ferrofluid flow and contributes to a comprehensive understanding of the key mechanisms governing the spin-up flow of dilute ferrofluids excited by low-frequency rotating magnetic fields.

Flow through sudden expansion finds its application in several engineering and biological processes. Though the stability of flow through steady sudden expansion has garnered much attention, little to none is given to the pulsatile flow through sudden expansion. Hence, in the present work we study the influence of inflow pulsatility on flow characteristics in a sudden expansion. The inflow velocity is a sinusoidal waveform that is modulated to encompass a wide range of amplitudes, ${{a}}$, and reduced velocities, ${{U_{r}}}$. We report four different modes, namely, synchronized growth of the recirculation region (at high ${{U_{r}}}$), necking and diffusion of the recirculation region (at moderately high ${{U_{r}}}$), splitting and convection of the recirculation region (at moderate ${{U_{r}}}$) and inverse growth of the recirculation region (at low ${{U_{r}}}$). In each mode, the symmetry-breaking critical Reynolds number is obtained through numerical experiments and compared with those of Floquet stability analysis. We found that diffusion and the convection mode of the recirculation region increases the stability of the flow while the inverse growth mode of the recirculation region decreases the same. The effect of the expansion ratio, ${{ER}}$, is also explored, and we found that as ${{ER}}$ increases, the absolute stability of flow decreases, but relative stability between the modes remains similar. Finally, we explain the dynamics of the modes by using terms involving the vorticity transport equation.

Two common definitions of the spatially local rate of kinetic energy cascade at some scale $\ell$ in turbulent flows are (i) the cubic velocity difference term appearing in the ‘scale-integrated local Kolmogorov–Hill’ equation (structure-function approach), and (ii) the subfilter-scale energy flux term in the transport equation for subgrid-scale kinetic energy (filtering approach). We perform a comparative study of both quantities based on direct numerical simulation data of isotropic turbulence at Taylor-scale Reynolds number 1250. While in the past observations of negative subfilter-scale energy flux (backscatter) have led to debates regarding interpretation and relevance of such observations, we argue that the interpretation of the local structure-function-based cascade rate definition is unambiguous since it arises from a divergence term in scale space. Conditional averaging is used to explore the relationship between the local cascade rate and the local filtered viscous dissipation rate as well as filtered velocity gradient tensor properties such as its invariants. We find statistically robust evidence of inverse cascade when both the large-scale rotation rate is strong and the large-scale strain rate is weak. Even stronger net inverse cascading is observed in the ‘vortex compression’ $R>0$, $Q>0$ quadrant, where $R$ and $Q$ are velocity gradient invariants. Qualitatively similar but quantitatively much weaker trends are observed for the conditionally averaged subfilter-scale energy flux. Flow visualizations show consistent trends, namely that spatially, the inverse cascade events appear to be located within large-scale vortices, specifically in subregions when $R$ is large.

Field observations of debris flows often show that a deep dry granular front is followed by a progressively thinner and increasingly watery tail. These features have been captured in recent laboratory flume experiments (Taylor-Noonan et al., J. Geophys. Res.: Earth Surf., vol. 127, 2022, e2022JF006622). In these experiments different initial release volumes were used to investigate the dynamics of an undersaturated monodisperse grain–water mixture as it flowed downslope onto a horizontal run-out pad. Corresponding dry granular flows, with the same particle release volumes, were also studied to show the effect of the interstitial fluid. The inclusion of water makes debris flows much more mobile than equivalent volumes of dry grains. In the wet flows, the formation of a dry front is crucially dependent on the heterogeneous vertical structure of the flow and the velocity shear. These effects are included in the depth-averaged theory of Meng et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 943, 2022, A19), which is used in this paper to quantitatively simulate both the wet and dry experimental flows using a high-resolution shock-capturing scheme. The results show that velocity shear causes dry grains (located near the free surface) to migrate forwards to create a dry front. The front is more resistant to motion than the more watery material behind, which reduces the overall computed run-out distance compared with debris-flow models that assume plug flow and develop only small dry snouts. Velocity shear also implies that there is a net transport of water to the back of the flow. This creates a thin oversaturated tail that is unstable to roll waves in agreement with experimental observations.

Adding moving boundaries to convective fluids is known to result in non-trivial and surprising dynamics, leading to spectacular geoformations ranging from kilometre-scale karst terrains to planetary-scale plate tectonics. On the one hand, the moving solid alters the surrounding flow field, but on the other hand, the flow modifies the motion and shape of the solid. This leads to a two-way coupling that is significant in the study of fluid–structure interactions and in the understanding of geomorphologies. In this work, we investigate the coupling between a floating plate and the convective fluid below it. Through numerical experiments, we show that the motion of this plate is driven by the flow beneath. However, the flow structure is also modified by the presence of the plate, leading to the ‘thermal blanket’ effect where the trapped heat beneath the plate results in buoyant and upwelling flows that in turn push the plate away. By analysing this two-way coupling between moving boundary and fluid, we are able to capture the dynamical behaviours of this plate through a low-dimensional stochastic model. Geophysically, the thermal blanket effect is believed to drive the continental drift, therefore understanding this mechanism has significance beyond fluid dynamics.

We show that a heating pattern applied to a surface with a corrugation pattern generates a propulsive effect. The same heating pattern applied to a smooth surface creates propulsion through nonlinear thermal streaming associated with pitchfork bifurcation. The combination of groove and heating patterns generates thermal drift, representing a forced response whose magnitude changes with the relative position of both patterns. Thermal drift is always present, while thermal streaming requires sufficiently intense heating. When both effects are active, a change in the relative position of these patterns produces rapid changes in the magnitude of propulsion, resulting in the formation of limit points. The strength of propulsion increases with a decrease in the Prandtl number and with an addition of uniform heating.

The axisymmetric problem of a conical shell impact onto an inviscid and incompressible liquid of infinite depth is studied. The shell is thin, and its deadrise angle is small. The problem is inertia dominated. Gravity, surface tension and viscous effects are not taken into account. The hydrodynamic loads acting on the shell and the shell displacements are determined at the same time. The model by Scolan (J. Sound Vib., vol. 277, issue 1–2, 2004, pp. 163–203) is used to find the flow and hydrodynamic pressure caused by the shell impact. This model is based on the Wagner theory of water impact, which was generalised to axisymmetric problems of hydroelastic slamming. Dry and wet modes of the conical shell, as well as the corresponding frequencies, are calculated. It is shown that a conical shell can be approximated by a circular plate only for a very small deadrise angle. Deflections and strains in the conical shell during the impact stage, when the wetted part of the shell increases at high rate, as well as the hydrodynamic loads, are determined and analysed.

We report numerical simulations confirming the predictions in Gordillo & Riboux (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 941, 2022, A10), where we elucidated the lubrication mechanism by which a drop of a low-viscosity liquid impacting over a smooth solid substrate skates over a thin gas film that prevents contact with the wall. Moreover, with the purpose of explaining the so-called lift-off mechanism reported in Kolinski et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 112, issue 13, 2014, 134501), we extend our previous findings and derive expressions for the time-varying thickness of the gas layer at the region where the distance to the wall is minimum, finding good agreement with the numerical results. In addition, we report that our predictions for the minimum thickness of the gas film separating a falling drop from a wall at room temperature follow closely the experimental values when gas kinetic effects are retained in the analysis, and also report that the analogous equation for the minimum thickness of the vapour layer formed after a drop impacts a superheated wall predicts well the experimental measurements.
