The dynamics and nonlinear wave forcing of a flexible floating structure are investigated experimentally and numerically. The floater was designed to match sub-harmonic rigid-body natural frequencies of typical floating wind turbine substructures, with the addition of a flexible bending mode. Experiments were carried out for three sea states with phase-shifted input signals to allow harmonic separation of the measured response. We find for the weakest sea states that sub-harmonic rigid-body motion is driven by even-harmonic difference frequency forcing, and by linear forcing for the strongest sea state. The flexible mode was tested in a soft, linearly forced layout, and a stiff layout, forced by second-, third- and fourth-harmonic frequency content, for increasing severity of the sea state. Further insight is gained by analysis of the amplitude scaling of the resonant response. A new simplified approach is proposed and compared with the recent method of Orszaghova et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 929, 2021, A32). We find that resonant surge and pitch motions are dominated by even-harmonic potential-flow forcing and that odd-harmonic response is mainly potential-flow driven in surge and mainly drag driven in pitch. The measured responses are reproduced numerically with second-order forcing and quadratic drag loads, using a recent and computationally efficient calculation method, extended here for the heave, pitch and flexible motions. We are able to reproduce the response statistics and power spectra for the measurements, including the subharmonic pitch and heave modes and the flexible mode. Deeper analysis reveals that inaccuracies in the even-harmonic forcing content can be compensated by the odd-harmonic loads.

We experimentally investigate the forced synchronization of a self-excited chaotic thermoacoustic oscillator with two natural frequencies, $f_1$ and $f_2$. On increasing the forcing amplitude, $\epsilon _f$, at a fixed forcing frequency, $f_f$, we find two different types of synchronization: (i) $f_f/f_1 = 1:1$ or $2:1$ chaos-destroying synchronization (CDS), and (ii) phase synchronization of chaos (PSC). En route to $1:1$ CDS, the system transitions from an unforced chaotic state (${\rm {CH}}_{1,2}$) to a forced chaotic state (${\rm {CH}}_{1,2,f}$), then to a two-frequency quasiperiodic state where chaos is destroyed ($\mathbb {T}^2_{2,f}$), and finally to a phase-locked period-1 state (${\rm {P1}}_f$). The route to $2:1$ CDS is similar, but the quasiperiodic state hosts a doubled torus $(2\mathbb {T}^2_{2,f})$ that transforms into a phase-locked period-2 orbit $({\rm {P2}}_f)$ when CDS occurs. En route to PSC, the system transitions to a forced chaotic state (${\rm {CH}}_{1,2,f}$) followed by a phase-locked chaotic state, where $f_1$, $f_2$ and $f_f$ still coexist but their phase difference remains bounded. We find that the maximum reduction in thermoacoustic amplitude occurs near the onset of CDS, and that the critical $\epsilon _f$ required for the onset of CDS does not vary significantly with $f_f$. We then use two unidirectionally coupled Anishchenko–Astakhov oscillators to phenomenologically model the experimental synchronization dynamics, including (i) the route to $1:1$ CDS, (ii) various phase dynamics, such as phase drifting, slipping and locking, and (iii) the thermoacoustic amplitude variations in the $f_f/f_1$–$\epsilon _f$ plane. This study extends the applicability of open-loop control further to a chaotic thermoacoustic system, demonstrating (i) the feasibility of using an existing actuation strategy to weaken aperiodic thermoacoustic oscillations, and (ii) the possibility of developing new active suppression strategies based on both established and emerging methods of chaos control.

We develop a theoretical and experimental framework for generating slip underneath thin-film flows of viscous fluids in the laboratory, with the ability to control slip as desired. Such a framework is useful for large-scale fluid-mechanical experiments in which basal sliding is important. In particular, we consider the flow of a thin film of viscous fluid spreading over a structured, slippery substrate, involving a sequence of two-dimensional cavities that are prewetted with a fluid of smaller viscosity. By averaging over small-scale inhomogeneities, we demonstrate that such a substrate gives rise to a macroscopic linear sliding law, or Navier slip condition, that is effectively homogeneous on the large scale. The slip length, determining the slipperiness of the substrate, is proportional to the viscosity ratio and width of each cavity. As such, the slipperiness of the substrate can be controlled by altering the viscosity ratio, as desired. Two asymptotic regimes arise, describing flow over very slippery substrates and flow over no-slip substrates. The former regime is valid for early times, when the depth of the overlying fluid is much less than the slip length, and the latter is valid for late times, when the depth is much greater than the slip length. Solutions to the full model approach similarity solutions describing the two regimes for early and late times. We confirm our theoretical predictions by conducting a series of analogue laboratory experiments.

Cavitation inception originates from nuclei in a liquid. This paper proposes a Gibbs free energy approach that provides a smooth transition from homogeneous to heterogeneous nucleation when gas is present. The impact of gas content on nucleation is explored. It is found that the gas content stabilises nuclei, a phenomenon not present in pure liquid–vapour systems. This reduces the energy barrier over that required to nucleate a vapour bubble. Different gas saturation levels are studied. Gas content can significantly reduce the energy barrier required for nucleation, and under certain circumstances eliminate it. An analytic solution for the critical radius and activation energy is obtained that accounts for gas content. The classical Blake radius is recovered as a limiting case. The hysteresis between incipience and desinence is explained using the asymmetry observed in the critical radii. The solution is used to obtain the initial bubble radius, given a critical pressure condition in cavitation susceptibility meter experiments. The relationship between initial bubble diameter and critical pressure is described by an analytic solution that accounts for gas content. A model for the derivative of the cumulative nuclei histogram with respect to bubble diameter is proposed. An analytic expression is obtained that shows good agreement with decades worth of experimental data compiled by Khoo et al. (Exp. Fluids, vol. 61, issue 2, 2020, pp. 1–20) from ocean to water tunnels. The expression recovers the $-4$ power law that is observed experimentally.

We present the results from a series of experiments investigating the dynamics of gravity currents which form when a dense saline or particle-laden plume issuing from a moving source interacts with a horizontal surface. We define the dimensionless parameter $P$ as the ratio of the source speed, $u_a$, to the buoyancy speed, $(B_0/z_0)^{1/3}$, where $B_0$ and $z_0$ are the source buoyancy flux and height above the horizontal surface, respectively. Using our experimental data, we determine that the limiting case in which $P=P_c$ the gravity current only spreads downstream of the initial impact point occurs when $P_c=0.83\pm 0.02$. For $P< P_c$, from our experiments we observe that the plume forms a gravity current that spreads out in all directions from the point of impact and the propagation of the gravity current is analogous to a classical constant-flux gravity current. For $P>P_c$, we observe that the descending plume is bent over and develops a pair of counter-rotating line vortices along the axis of the plume. The ensuing gravity current spreads out downstream of the source, normal to the motion of the source. Analogous processes occur with particle-laden plumes, but there is a second dimensionless parameter $S$, the ratio of the particle fall speed, $v_s$, to the vertical speed of a plume in a crossflow, $(B_0/u_a z_0)^{1/2}$. For $S\ll 1$, particles remain well mixed in the plume and a particle-driven gravity current develops. For $S\gg 1$, particles separate from the plume prior to impacting the boundary which leads to a fall deposit and no gravity current. We discuss these results in the context of deep-sea mining.

The hydrodynamic influence of surface texture on static surfaces ranges from large drag penalties (roughness) to potential performance benefits (shark-like skin). Although it is of wide-ranging research interest, the impact of roughness on flapping systems has received limited attention. In this work, we explore the effect of roughness on the unsteady performance of a harmonically pitching foil through experiments using foils with different surface roughness, at a fixed Strouhal number and within the Reynolds number ($Re$) range of $17\,000\unicode{x2013}33\,000$. The foils’ surface roughness is altered by changing the distribution of spherical-cap-shaped elements over the propulsor area. We find that the addition of surface roughness does not improve the performance compared with a smooth surface over the $Re$ range considered. The analysis of the flow fields shows near-identical wakes regardless of the foil's surface roughness. The performance reduction mainly occurs due to an increase in profile drag. However, we find that the drag penalty due to roughness is reduced from $76\,\%$ for a static foil to $16\,\%$ for a flapping foil at the same mean angle of attack, with the strongest decrease measured at the highest $Re$. Our findings highlight that the effect of roughness on dynamic systems is very different than that on static systems; thereby, it cannot be estimated by only using information obtained from static cases. This also indicates that the performance of unsteady, flapping systems is more robust to the changes in surface roughness.

Supersonic backward-facing step (BFS) flow is numerically studied using direct numerical simulation (DNS) and global stability analysis (GSA) with a free stream Mach number of 2.16 and a Reynolds number of 7.938 × 105 based on the flat-plate length L and free stream conditions. Two-dimensional BFS flow becomes unstable to three-dimensional perturbations as the step height h exceeds a certain value, while no two-dimensionally unstable mode is found. Global instability occurs with the fragmentation of the primary separation vortex downstream of the step. Two stationary modes and one oscillatory unstable mode are obtained at a supercritical ratio of L/h = 32.14, among which the two stationary modes originate from the coalescence of a pair of conjugate modes. The most unstable mode manifests itself as streamwise streaks in the reattached boundary layer, which is similar to that in shock-induced separated flow, although the flow separation mechanisms are different. Without introducing any external disturbances, the DNS captures the preferred perturbations and produces a growth rate in agreement with the GSA prediction in the linear growth stage. In the quasi-steady stage, the secondary separation vortex breaks up into several small bubbles, and the number of streamwise streaks is doubled. A low-frequency unsteadiness that may be associated with the oscillatory mode is also present.

Elasto-inertial turbulence (EIT) is a recently discovered two-dimensional chaotic flow state observed in dilute polymer solutions. Two possibilities are currently hypothesized to be linked to the dynamical origins of EIT: (i) viscoelastic Tollmien–Schlichting waves and (ii) a centre-mode instability. The nonlinear evolution of the centre mode leads to a travelling wave with an ‘arrowhead’ structure in the polymer conformation, a structure also observed instantaneously in simulations of EIT. In this work we conduct a suite of two-dimensional direct numerical simulations spanning a wide range of polymeric flow parameters to examine the possible dynamical connection between the arrowhead and EIT. Our calculations reveal (up to) four coexistent attractors: the laminar state and a steady arrowhead regime (SAR), along with EIT and a ‘chaotic arrowhead regime’ (CAR). The SAR is stable for all parameters considered here, while the final pair of (chaotic) flow states are visually very similar and can be distinguished only by the presence of a weak polymer arrowhead structure in the CAR regime. Analysis of energy transfers between the flow and the polymer indicates that both chaotic regimes are maintained by an identical near-wall mechanism and that the weak arrowhead does not play a role. Our results suggest that the arrowhead is a benign flow structure that is disconnected from the self-sustaining mechanics of EIT.

We investigate the effect of particle inertia on the merger of co-rotating dusty vortex pairs at semi-dilute concentrations. In a particle-free flow, the merger is triggered once the ratio of vortex core size to vortex separation reaches a critical value. The vortex pair separation then decreases monotonically until the two cores merge together. Using Eulerian–Lagrangian simulations of co-rotating particle-laden vortices, we show substantial departure from the vortex dynamics previously established in particle-free flows. Most strikingly, we find that disperse particles with moderate inertia cause the vortex pair to push apart to a separation nearly twice as large as the initial separation. During this stage, the drag force exerted by particles ejected out of the vortex cores on the fluid results in a net repulsive force that pushes the two cores apart. Eventually, the two dusty vortices merge into a single vortex with most particles accumulating outside the core, similar to the dusty Lamb–Oseen vortex described in Shuai & Kasbaoui (J. Fluid Mech., vol 936, 2022, p. A8). For weakly inertial particles, we find that the merger dynamics follows the same mechanics as that of a single-phase flow, albeit with a density that must be adjusted to match the mixture density. For highly inertial particles, the feedback force exerted by the particles on the fluid may stretch the two cores during the merger to a point where each core splits into two, resulting in inner and outer vortex pairs. In this case, the merger occurs in two stages where the inner vortices merge first, followed by the outer ones.

The acoustic response of a five-bladed rotor to an axisymmetric turbulent boundary layer at the tail end of a body of revolution (BOR) is investigated numerically to elucidate the physical sources of acoustics, particularly the role of coherent structures in sound generation. The BOR is at a length-based Reynolds number of $1.9 \times 10^6$ and free-stream Mach number of 0.059. Two rotor advance ratios, $1.44$ and $1.13$, are considered. The turbulent boundary layer on the nose and midsection of the BOR is computed using wall-modelled large-eddy simulation, whereas that in the acoustically important tail-cone section is wall-resolved. The radiated acoustic field is calculated using the Ffowcs Williams–Hawkings equation. The computed flow statistics and sound pressure spectra agree well with the experimental measurements at Virginia Tech. In addition to broadband turbulence-ingestion noise, spectral humps near multiples of the blade-passing frequency and accompanying valleys are captured. They are shown to be caused by correlated blade unsteady-loading dipole sources and their constructive and destructive interference as a result of successive blades cutting through the same coherent structures. The latter undergo rapid growth in the decelerating tail-cone boundary layer before their interaction with the rotor. The acoustic radiation is dominated by the outer region of the blade owing to a combination of larger blade chord-length, inflow turbulence intensity and blade speed. The numerical results also correctly predict the effect of the rotor advance ratio on the acoustic field. A mixed free-stream/convection Mach-number scaling successfully collapses the sound pressure spectra at the two advance ratios.

We develop a physics-informed neural network (PINN) to significantly augment state-of-the-art experimental data of stratified flows. A fully connected deep neural network is trained using time-resolved experimental data in a salt-stratified inclined duct experiment, consisting of three-component velocity fields and density fields measured simultaneously in three dimensions at Reynolds number $= O(10^3)$ and at Prandtl or Schmidt number $=700$. The PINN enforces incompressibility, the governing equations for momentum and buoyancy, and the boundary conditions at the duct walls. These physics-constrained, augmented data are output at an increased spatio-temporal resolution and demonstrate five key results: (i) the elimination of measurement noise; (ii) the correction of distortion caused by the scanning measurement technique; (iii) the identification of weak but dynamically important three-dimensional vortices of Holmboe waves; (iv) the revision of turbulent energy budgets and mixing efficiency; and (v) the prediction of the latent pressure field and its role in the observed asymmetric Holmboe wave dynamics. These results mark a significant step forward in furthering the reach of experiments, especially in the context of stratified turbulence, where accurately computing three-dimensional gradients and resolving small scales remain enduring challenges.

We analyse the results of direct numerical simulations of rotating convection in spherical shell geometries with stress-free boundary conditions, which develop strong zonal flows. Both the Ekman number and the Rayleigh number are varied. We find that the asymptotic theory for rapidly rotating convection can be used to predict the Ekman number dependence of each term in the governing equations, along with the convective flow speeds and the dominant length scales. Using a balance between the Reynolds stress and the viscous stress, together with the asymptotic scaling for the convective velocity, we derive an asymptotic prediction for the scaling behaviour of the zonal flow with respect to the Ekman number, which is supported by the numerical simulations. We do not find evidence of distinct asymptotic scalings for the buoyancy and viscous forces and, in agreement with previous results from asymptotic plane layer models, we find that the ratio of the viscous force to the buoyancy force increases with Rayleigh number. Thus, viscosity remains non-negligible and we do not observe a trend towards a diffusion-free scaling behaviour within the rapidly rotating regime.

Self-sustained, low-frequency, coherent flow unsteadiness over rigid, stationary aerofoils in the transonic regime is referred to as transonic buffet. This study examines the role of shock waves in sustaining this transonic phenomenon and its relation to low-frequency oscillations (LFO) that occur in flow over aerofoils in the incompressible regime (Zaman et al., J. Fluid Mech., vol. 202, 1989, pp. 403–442). This is investigated by performing large-eddy simulations of the flow over a NACA0012 profile for a wide range of flow conditions under free-transition conditions. At low Reynolds numbers, zero incidence angle and sufficiently high free-stream Mach numbers, $M$, transonic buffet occurs with shock waves present in the flow. However, when $M$ alone is lowered, self-sustained, periodic oscillations at a low frequency are observed even though shock waves are absent and the entire flow field remains subsonic at all times. At higher incidence angles, the oscillations are sustained at progressively lower $M$ and are present even at $M=0.3$, where compressibility effects are low. A spectral proper orthogonal decomposition (SPOD) shows that the spatial structure of these oscillations is consistent for all cases. The SPOD modes are topologically similar, suggesting a connection between transonic buffet and LFO in the incompressible regime. Comparisons with other studies examining transonic buffet on various aerofoils, under forced-transition and fully turbulent conditions support this hypothesis. Future studies using tools of global linear stability analysis, especially at high free-stream Reynolds numbers are required to examine whether the underlying mechanisms of transonic buffet and incompressible LFO are the same.

Wall-pressure fluctuations are a practically robust input for real-time control systems aimed at modifying wall-bounded turbulence. The scaling behaviour of the wall-pressure–velocity coupling requires investigation to properly design a controller with such input data so that it can actuate upon the desired turbulent structures. A comprehensive database from direct numerical simulations (DNS) of turbulent channel flow is used for this purpose, spanning a Reynolds-number range $Re_\tau \approx 550\unicode{x2013}5200$. Spectral analysis reveals that the streamwise velocity is most strongly coupled to the linear term of the wall pressure, at a Reynolds-number invariant distance-from-the-wall scaling of $\lambda _x/y \approx 14$ (and $\lambda _x/y \approx 8$ for the wall-normal velocity). When extending the analysis to both homogeneous directions in $x$ and $y$, the peak coherence is centred at $\lambda _x/\lambda _z \approx 2$ and $\lambda _x/\lambda _z \approx 1$ for $p_w$ and $u$, and $p_w$ and $v$, respectively. A stronger coherence is retrieved when the quadratic term of the wall pressure is concerned, but there is only little evidence for a wall-attached-eddy type of scaling. An experimental dataset comprising simultaneous measurements of wall pressure and velocity complements the DNS-based findings at one value of $Re_\tau \approx 2$k, with ample evidence that the DNS-inferred correlations can be replicated with experimental pressure data subject to significant levels of (acoustic) facility noise. It is furthermore shown that velocity-state estimations can be achieved with good accuracy by including both the linear and quadratic terms of the wall pressure. An accuracy of up to 72 % in the binary state of the streamwise velocity fluctuations in the logarithmic region is achieved; this corresponds to a correlation coefficient of $\approx$0.6. This thus demonstrates that wall-pressure sensing for velocity-state estimation – e.g. for use in real-time control of wall-bounded turbulence – has merit in terms of its realization at a range of Reynolds numbers.

In the context of large off-shore wind farms, power production is influenced greatly by the turbine array's interaction with the atmospheric boundary layer. One of the most influencing manifestations of such complex interaction is the increased level of shear stress observed within the farm. This leads to higher momentum fluxes that affect the wind speed at the turbine locations and in the cluster wake. At the wind farm entrance, an internal boundary layer (IBL) grows due to the change in effective roughness imposed by the wind turbines, and for large enough clusters, this can reach the unperturbed boundary layer height in what is referred to as the fully developed regime. Downwind, a second IBL starts growing, while the shear stress profile decays exponentially to its unperturbed state. In the present study, we propose a simple analytical model for the vertical profile of the horizontal shear stress components in the three regions identified above. The model builds upon the top-down model of Meneveau (J. Turbul., vol. 13, 2012, N7), and assumes that the flow develops in a conventionally neutral boundary layer. The proposed parametrization is verified successfully against large-eddy simulations, demonstrating its ability to capture the vertical profile of horizontal shear stress, and its evolution both inside and downwind of the wind farm. Our findings suggest that the developed model can prove extremely useful to enhance the physical grounds on which new classes of coupled wind farm engineering models are based, leading to a better estimation of meso-scale phenomena affecting the power production of large turbine arrays.

An accurate prediction of turbulence has been very costly since it requires an infinitesimally small time step for advancing the governing equations to resolve the fast-evolving small-scale motions. With the recent development of various machine learning (ML) algorithms, the finite-time prediction of turbulence became one of promising options to relieve the computational burden. Yet, a reliable prediction of the small-scale motions is challenging. In this study, PredictionNet, a data-driven ML framework based on generative adversarial networks (GANs), was developed for fast prediction of turbulence with high accuracy down to the smallest scale using a relatively small number of parameters. In particular, we conducted learning of two-dimensional (2-D) decaying turbulence at finite lead times using direct numerical simulation data. The developed prediction model accurately predicted turbulent fields at a finite lead time of up to half the Eulerian integral time scale over which the large-scale motions remain fairly correlated. Scale decomposition was used to interpret the predictability depending on the spatial scale, and the role of latent variables in the discriminator network was investigated. The good performance of the GAN in predicting small-scale turbulence is attributed to the scale-selection and scale-interaction capability of the latent variable. Furthermore, by utilising PredictionNet as a surrogate model, a control model named ControlNet was developed to identify disturbance fields that drive the time evolution of the flow field in the direction that optimises the specified objective function.

Active flow control for drag reduction with reinforcement learning (RL) is performed in the wake of a two-dimensional square bluff body at laminar regimes with vortex shedding. Controllers parametrised by neural networks are trained to drive two blowing and suction jets that manipulate the unsteady flow. The RL with full observability (sensors in the wake) discovers successfully a control policy that reduces the drag by suppressing the vortex shedding in the wake. However, a non-negligible performance degradation ($\sim$50 % less drag reduction) is observed when the controller is trained with partial measurements (sensors on the body). To mitigate this effect, we propose an energy-efficient, dynamic, maximum entropy RL control scheme. First, an energy-efficiency-based reward function is proposed to optimise the energy consumption of the controller while maximising drag reduction. Second, the controller is trained with an augmented state consisting of both current and past measurements and actions, which can be formulated as a nonlinear autoregressive exogenous model, to alleviate the partial observability problem. Third, maximum entropy RL algorithms (soft actor critic and truncated quantile critics) that promote exploration and exploitation in a sample-efficient way are used, and discover near-optimal policies in the challenging case of partial measurements. Stabilisation of the vortex shedding is achieved in the near wake using only surface pressure measurements on the rear of the body, resulting in drag reduction similar to that in the case with wake sensors. The proposed approach opens new avenues for dynamic flow control using partial measurements for realistic configurations.

Experiments were performed to document the complex flow field around and over a $70^{\circ }$ swept fin mounted on a $7^{\circ }$ half-angle right-circular cone in a Mach 6 free-stream. Of particular interest is the turbulent transition of the boundary layer over the swept fin, which is expected to be dominated by a cross-flow instability. Stationary features in the surface temperature distribution over the fin are documented using infrared thermal imaging. These were processed further to determine average spatial Stanton number distributions over the fin. Wavelet analysis of the Stanton number distributions revealed stationary patterns with wavelengths near the fin leading edge that were consistent with linear theory predictions of stationary cross-flow modes. Further from the leading edge, the wavelength of the stationary patterns was observed to increase prior to turbulence onset. Based on these observations, specially designed arrays of discrete roughness elements (DREs) were investigated as a means of delaying turbulence transition with the objective of reducing surface heat flux on the swept fin. The DRE designs followed our previous approach used for cross-flow transition control (Corke et al., J. Fluid Mech., vol. 856, issue 10, 2018, pp. 822–849; Arndt et al., J. Fluid Mech., vol. 887, 2020, A30). These focused on either the shorter wavelengths near the leading edge, or the longer wavelengths that developed near turbulence onset. With regard to delaying transition and reducing the surface heat flux, the DREs that focused on the larger wavelengths of stationary modes were most effective. The fin included an array of pressure sensors that were used to document travelling disturbances that could include those associated with travelling cross-flow modes. Phase analysis of the pressure fluctuation time series was used to determine the wavelength, wave angle and phase speed that were consistent with the travelling cross-flow modes. Cross-bicoherence analysis between the stationary and travelling disturbances indicates a nonlinear phase locking that can account for the development of the longer-wavelength stationary features in the surface heat flux, presumed to be due to stationary cross-flow modes, prior to turbulence onset.

In this paper, we investigate periodic travelling waves in a three-layer system with the rigid-lid assumption. Solutions are recovered numerically using a boundary integral method. We consider the case where the density difference between the layers is small (i.e. a weakly stratified fluid). We consider the system both with and without the Boussinesq assumption to explore the effect the assumption has on the solution space. Periodic solutions of both mode-1 and mode-2 are found, and their bifurcation structure and limiting configurations are described in detail. Similarities are found with the two-layer case, where large-amplitude solutions are found to overhang with an internal angle of $120^{\circ }$. However, the addition of a second interface results in a richer bifurcation space, in part due to the existence of mode-2 waves and their resonance with mode-1 waves. New limiting profiles are found.
