Oscillatory flows have become an indispensable tool in microfluidics, inducing inertial effects for displacing and manipulating fluid-borne objects in a reliable, controllable and label-free fashion. However, the quantitative description of such effects has been confined to limit cases and specialized scenarios. Here we develop an analytical formalism yielding the equation of motion of density-mismatched spherical particles in oscillatory background flows, generalizing previous work. Inertial force terms are systematically derived from the geometry of the flow field together with analytically known Stokes number dependences. Supported by independent, first-principles direct numerical simulations, we find that these forces are important even for nearly density-matched objects such as cells or bacteria, enabling their fast displacement and separation. Our formalism thus consistently incorporates particle inertia into the Maxey–Riley equation, and in doing so provides a generalization of Auton's modification to added mass, as well as recovering the description of acoustic radiation forces on particles as a limiting case.

The coherent dynamics of bubble clusters are of fundamental and industrial importance, and are elusive due to the complex interactions of disordered bubble oscillations. Here we introduce and demonstrate a method for decomposition of the Lagrangian time series of bubble dynamics data by combining theory and principal component analysis. The decomposition extracts coherent features of bubble oscillations based on their energy, in a way similar to proper orthogonal decomposition of Eulerian flow field data. This method is applied to a dataset of spherical clusters under harmonic excitation at different amplitudes, with various nuclei density and polydispersity parameters. Results indicate that the underlying correlated mode of oscillations is isolated in a single dominant feature in cavitating regimes, independent of the nuclei's parameters. A systematic data analysis procedure further suggests that this feature is globally controlled by the dynamic cloud interaction parameter of Maeda and Colonius (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 862, 2019, pp. 1105–1134) that quantifies the mean-field interactions, regardless of initial polydispersity or nonlinearity. The method provides a simplified and comprehensive representation of complex bubble dynamics as well as a new path to reduced-order modelling of cavitation and nucleation.

Particle trapping and manipulation have a wide range of applications in biotechnology and engineering. Recently, a flow-based, particle-trapping device called the Stokes trap was developed for trapping and control of small particles in the intersection of multiple branches in a microfluidic channel. This device can also be used to perform rheological experiments to determine the viscoelastic response of an emulsion or suspension. We show that besides these applications, the various flow modes produced by the Stokes trap are able to manipulate drop shapes and induce active mixing inside droplets. To this end, we analyse the dynamics of a droplet in a Stokes trap through boundary-integral simulations. We also explore the dynamic response of drop shape with respect to distinct external flow modes, which allows us to perform numerical experiments such as step strain and oscillatory extension. A linear controller is used to manipulate drop position, and the drop deformation is characterized by a spherical-harmonic decomposition. For small drop deformations, we observe a linear superposition of harmonics, which, surprisingly, seems to hold even for moderate deformations. This result indicates that such a device can be used for shape control of droplets. We also investigate how the different flow modes may be combined to induce mixing inside the droplets. The transient combination of modes produces an effective chaotic mixing, which is characterized by a mixing number. The mixing inside the droplet can be further enhanced for lower viscosity ratios and low, but non-zero capillary number and flow frequencies.

Through a combination of laboratory experiments and theoretical models, we investigate the interaction of a mean upwelling through a closed basin with a vertical buoyancy flux. The fluid is mixed by a horizontally oscillating rake, which either traverses the whole basin or which oscillates just near one vertical boundary. We first review the steady state and demonstrate that, in both mixing regimes, the vertical density profile across the basin is controlled by the steady-state balance between the upward advective and diffusive fluxes of salinity as described by the classical model introduced by Munk (Deep-Sea Res., vol. 13, issue 4, 1966, pp. 707–730). However, with boundary mixing, we show that both the upwelling and the buoyancy transport are localised to the mixing zone near the boundary, and the interior fluid is stagnant. We then develop a model to describe the transient evolution of the system if there is either a discrete increase or gradual decrease to the buoyancy flux. In the boundary mixing case, the change in the buoyancy flux at the lower boundary leads to a change in the buoyancy of the fluid in the boundary mixing region, and this induces a transient, buoyancy-driven flow in the boundary region in addition to the steady upwelling. In turn, an equal and opposite vertical flow develops in the interior, and this leads to a change in the density stratification of the interior fluid as the system adjusts to a new equilibrium. However, in our experiments, there is no vertical mixing in the interior and interior fluid may upwell or downwell dependent on the change to the buoyancy forcing. We discuss the implications of our results for the transport and mixing in the deep ocean, and the associated interpretation of field experiments.

The influence of the boundary layer (BL) thickness on the tonal noise generated by subsonic impinging jets is investigated. For that, initially laminar jets at Mach numbers $0.6$ and $0.9$ with BL thicknesses $0.05r_0$, $0.1r_0$ and $0.2r_0$, where $r_0$ is the pipe-nozzle radius, impinging on a plate at $6r_0$ from the nozzle, are simulated. For Mach number $0.9$, acoustic tones due to feedback loops of axisymmetric nature between the nozzle and the plate are generated at frequencies that do not vary with the BL thickness. The two dominant tones are, however, $17$ and $26\ \mathrm {dB}$ stronger for the thickest BL compared with the thinnest one. For Mach number $0.6$, for the thinnest BL no acoustic peaks appear, as observed in the experiments of the literature, but narrow peaks resulting from axisymmetric feedback loops emerge for thicker BLs. Therefore, low subsonic impinging jets can be resonant for specific nozzle-exit conditions. The increase in tone amplitude for Mach number $0.9$, and the establishment of feedback loops for Mach number $0.6$ with increasing BL thickness, are found to result from two changes in the jet flow. The first change is that the shear-layer laminar–turbulent transition occurs farther downstream for a thicker BL, leading to a greater predominance of the axisymmetric aerodynamic fluctuations near the plate. The second change is that the amplification of the flow fluctuations between the nozzle and the plate at the tone frequencies is stronger for thicker BLs.

This paper investigates the transport of drugs delivered by direct injection into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) that fills the intrathecal space surrounding the spinal cord. Because of the small drug diffusivity, the dispersion of neutrally buoyant drugs has been shown in previous work to rely mainly on the mean Lagrangian flow associated with the CSF oscillatory motion. Attention is given here to effects of buoyancy, arising when the drug density differs from the CSF density. For the typical density differences found in applications, the associated Richardson number is shown to be of order unity, so that the Lagrangian drift includes a buoyancy-induced component that depends on the spatial distribution of the drug, resulting in a slowly evolving cycle-averaged flow problem that can be analysed with two-time scale methods. The asymptotic analysis leads to a nonlinear integro-differential equation for the spatiotemporal solute evolution that describes accurately drug dispersion at a fraction of the cost involved in direct numerical simulations of the oscillatory flow. The model equation is used to predict drug dispersion of positively and negatively buoyant drugs in an anatomically correct spinal canal, with separate attention given to drug delivery via bolus injection and constant infusion.

This study investigated the turbulent wake flow behind a flat-back Ahmed body using a combination of time-resolved tomographic particle image velocimetry measurements and spectral proper orthogonal decomposition (SPOD). The experiments were conducted at a Reynolds number of ReH = 10 000, which is defined as U∞H/ν, where U∞ represents the free-stream velocity, H is the height of the body and ν represents the viscosity. The SPOD analysis revealed four distinct flow motions present in the wake of the Ahmed body, each occupying a specific range of Strouhal number, StH. Here, StH is defined as f × H/U∞, where f is the frequency of the motion. At the lowest resolved StH of 0.007, the system exhibited a bi-stability mode, in which the wake switched between asymmetric states consisting of a tilted toroidal vortex and a streamwise vortex. In the next StH range of 0.014 to 0.123, the flow demonstrated swinging/flapping motions, characterized by small spanwise and vertical movements of the wake barycentre. These movements were attributed to the tilting of the toroidal vortex. The third category included the vortex-shedding motions and consisted of quasi-streamwise vortices. These vortices advected in the downstream direction, causing oblique displacements of the barycentre in the streamwise-vertical plane. The peak energy of the vortex shedding was observed at StH = 0.164. Finally, shear layer instabilities induced small vertical and spanwise velocity fluctuations along the shear layers at a high StH of 1.147.

We conducted experiments in a laboratory to study turbulent flow over wind generated water waves. The experiments were performed in a wind-wave-current flume with three free stream wind speeds of Uref = 6.0, 8.0 and 10.0 m s−1, corresponding to 10 m equivalent wind speed of U10 = 10.2, 12.2 and 14.1 m s−1 and the root-mean-square wave height of 0.7, 1.1 and 1.7 cm, respectively, at a fetch of 6.2 m. The instantaneous velocity fields above the waves were obtained by using a particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique. The velocity fields were decomposed into the mean, wave-induced and turbulent velocity components. The tested wind waves were primarily dissipated by capillaries and microscale breaking waves. The Bond number and the shear velocity-fetch based Reynolds number were found to correlate with the wind wave regimes well. The turbulent dissipation rates above the water surface were determined based on resolved spatial gradient of instantaneous velocities, where the time-averaged dissipation rate values were calibrated using those estimated from the one-dimensional velocity spectrum in the temporal space. Subsequently, the turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) budget including its production, dissipation, advection and turbulent transport was presented. In addition, conditional averaging analysis of the TKE budgets over leeward, windward sides and all phases was performed. The results showed a strong dependency with the wave phase in the TKE budget terms except for the dissipation. The production-dissipation ratio increased significantly as the wind speed increased, likely attributed to the increased roughness over the substantial coverage of micro-breaking waves.

The classical Cox–Voinov theory of contact line motion provides a relation between the macroscopically observable contact angle, and the microscopic wetting angle as a function of contact-line velocity. Here, we investigate how viscoelasticity, specifically the normal stress effect, modifies the wetting dynamics. Using the thin film equation for the second-order fluid, it is found that the normal stress effect is dominant at small scales yet can significantly affect macroscopic motion. We show that the effect can be incorporated in the Cox–Voinov theory through an apparent microscopic angle, which differs from the true microscopic angle. The theory is applied to the classical problems of drop spreading and dip coating, which shows how normal stress facilitates (inhibits) the motion of advancing (receding) contact lines. For rapid advancing motion, the apparent microscopic angle can tend to zero, in which case the dynamics is described by a regime that was already anticipated in Boudaoud (Eur. Phys. J. E, vol. 22, 2007, pp. 107–109).

This paper investigates the linear and nonlinear evolution of radiating modes in supersonic boundary layers under the influence of impinging sound waves. It is found that the ensuing boundary-layer response is extraordinarily large for a subset of the sound frequency and incident angle, and the resonant over-reflection, corresponding to the reflection coefficient becoming infinite, occurs at a particular pairing of frequency and incident angle. At this point, the reflected wave coincides with a locally neutral radiating mode, which emits spontaneously sound in the form of Mach waves. A fundamental resonance takes place between the incident wave and the radiating mode. Viewed in a developing boundary layer, the response is rendered finite by introducing non-parallelism and nonlinear effects near the neutral location of the radiating mode, where the sound wave directly excites the radiating mode and/or acts on the pre-existing radiating mode. Inhomogeneous amplitude equations are derived to describe the excitation as well as the nonlinear development of the radiating mode in the two regimes where non-equilibrium and non-parallelism play a leading-order role, respectively. A composite amplitude equation is then constructed to take into account both non-parallelism and non-equilibrium effects. This amplitude equation is, with an appropriate initial condition, solved to quantify the impact of the impinging sound wave on the linear and nonlinear instability characteristics of the radiating mode. The far-field analysis shows that the Mach wave field of the radiating mode is changed significantly due to the incident sound.

Advective–diffusive transport in Poiseuille flow through a channel with partially absorbing walls is a classical problem with applications to a broad range of natural and engineered scenarios, ranging from solute and heat transport in porous and fractured media to absorption in biological systems and chromatography. We study this problem from the perspective of transverse distributions of surviving mass and velocity, which are a central ingredient of recent stochastic models of transport based on the sampling of local flow velocities along trajectories. We show that these distributions tend to asymptotic equilibria for large times and travel distances, and derive rigorous explicit expressions for arbitrary reaction rate. We find that the equality of flux-weighted and breakthrough distributions that holds for conservative transport breaks in the presence of reaction, and that the average velocity of the scalar plume is no longer fully characterized by the transverse distribution of flow velocities sampled at a given time.

The two-dimensional gravity-driven motion of a relatively dense viscous liquid at the base of a granular mush is investigated using a model that exploits the relative shallowness of the flow. The granular mush obeys a $\mu (I)$-rheology, and we assume that the two phases are segregated throughout the motion. The viscous liquid spreads under gravity, carrying the granular mush above and transporting it outwards as levees at either end of the flow. The accumulation of granular material away from the centre of the deposit produces hydrostatic pressure gradients that retard the viscous gravity current. At later times, the granular mush is quasi-static relative to the moving liquid owing to the balance of outward granular transfer by the liquid and inward hydrostatic pressure gradients associated with the granular free surface. The viscous liquid exhibits a Poiseuille-like flow structure with negligible velocity at both the base and the granular interface. The flow of a fixed volume of viscous liquid becomes self-similar with the effective viscosity quadrupled relative to a classical viscous gravity current owing to the retarding effects of the granular mush. The case of constant input flux of viscous liquid is also analysed. The qualitative features are akin to the fixed volume case with the granular mush forming levees and slowing the viscous spreading. The case in which the upper medium is a Bingham material rather than a granular mush is also discussed, and the same features are observed, demonstrating the importance of the yield criterion in the upper medium.

This paper investigates the linear and nonlinear evolution of radiating modes under the influence of the spontaneously emitted Mach waves in a simple set-up of the supersonic boundary layers that develop in the entry region of a channel formed by two parallel semi-infinite flat plates. Two scenarios are considered. The first occurs in the boundary layers having identical wall conditions, where the Mach wave emitted by a radiating mode in one boundary layer influences the instability in the other. The second scenario takes place when the wall temperatures are different, in which case the spontaneously radiated Mach wave is reflected by the other boundary layer back to act on the radiating mode. Appropriate amplitude equations with the acoustic feedback effect being accounted for are derived. In each case, the effect of the spontaneously emitted sound contributes a linear term of delay type to the respective amplitude equation. For the first scenario, analytical and numerical studies of the amplitude equations show that due to the back action of the spontaneously radiated Mach wave, the amplitude exhibits rapid oscillations, and in the case of enhanced feedback effects, its envelope experiences near extinction followed by resurrection. The study of the coupled equations shows that the two modes with different initial amplitudes either undergo oscillations before attenuating, or terminate a finite-distance singularity at different locations. For the second scenario, the acoustic feedback produces similar effects in a broad range of wall temperature. The effects become pronounced, and the dependence on the wall temperature becomes more sensitive when the latter approaches the value corresponding to the resonance. Estimates suggest that such acoustic feedback is likely to be present in typical wind tunnel experiments and models for scramjet combustors.

The interaction between a uniform current with a circular cylinder submerged in a fluid covered by a semi-infinite ice sheet is considered analytically. The ice sheet is modelled as an elastic thin plate, and the fluid flow is described by the linearised velocity potential theory. The Green function or the velocity potential due to a source is first obtained. As the water surface is divided into two semi-infinite parts with different boundary conditions, the Wiener–Hopf method (WHM) offers significant advantages over alternative approaches and is consequently adopted. To do that, the distribution of the roots of the dispersion equation for fluid fully covered by an ice sheet in the complex plane is first analysed systematically, which does not seem to have been done before. The variations of these roots with the Froude number are investigated, especially their effects or factorisation and decomposition required in the WHM. The result is verified by comparing with that obtained from the matched eigenfunction expansion method. Through differentiating the Green function with respect to the source position, the potentials due to multipoles are obtained, which are employed to construct the velocity potential for the circular cylinder. Extensive results are provided for hydrodynamic forces on the cylinder and wave profiles, and some unique features are discussed. In particular, it is found that the forces can be highly oscillatory with the Froude number when the body is below the ice sheet, whereas such an oscillation does not exist when the body is below the free surface.

The molten sand that is a mixture of calcia, magnesia, alumina and silicate, known as CMAS, is characterized by its high viscosity, density and surface tension. The unique properties of CMAS make it a challenging material to deal with in high-temperature applications, requiring innovative solutions and materials to prevent its buildup and damage to critical equipment. Here, we use multiphase many-body dissipative particle dynamics simulations to study the wetting dynamics of highly viscous molten CMAS droplets. The simulations are performed in three dimensions, with varying initial droplet sizes and equilibrium contact angles. We propose a parametric ordinary differential equation (ODE) that captures the spreading radius behaviour of the CMAS droplets. The ODE parameters are then identified based on the physics-informed neural network (PINN) framework. Subsequently, the closed-form dependency of parameter values found by the PINN on the initial radii and contact angles are given using symbolic regression. Finally, we employ Bayesian PINNs (B-PINNs) to assess and quantify the uncertainty associated with the discovered parameters. In brief, this study provides insight into spreading dynamics of CMAS droplets by fusing simple parametric ODE modelling and state-of-the-art machine-learning techniques.

This study investigates the influence of suspended kelp farms on ocean mixed layer hydrodynamics in the presence of currents and waves. We use the large eddy simulation method, where the wave effect is incorporated by solving the wave-averaged equations. Distinct Langmuir circulation patterns are generated within various suspended farm configurations, including horizontally uniform kelp blocks and spaced kelp rows. Intensified turbulence arises from the farm-generated Langmuir circulation, as opposed to the standard Langmuir turbulence observed without a farm. The creation of Langmuir circulation within the farm is attributed to two primary factors depending on farm configuration: (i) enhanced vertical shear due to kelp frond area density variability, and (ii) enhanced lateral shear due to canopy discontinuity at lateral edges of spaced rows. Both enhanced vertical and lateral shear of streamwise velocity, representing the lateral and vertical vorticity components, respectively, can be tilted into downstream vorticity to create Langmuir circulation. This vorticity tilting is driven by the Craik–Leibovich vortex force associated with the Stokes drift of surface gravity waves. In addition to the farm-generated Langmuir turbulence, canopy shear layer turbulence is created at the farm bottom edge due to drag discontinuity. The intensity of different types of turbulence depends on both kelp frond area density and the geometric configuration of the farm. The farm-generated turbulence has substantial consequences for nutrient supply and kelp growth. These findings also underscore the significance of the presence of obstacle structures in modifying ocean mixed layer characteristics.

The topology of turbulent coherent structures is known to regulate the transport of energy, mass and momentum in the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL). While previous research has primarily focused on characterizing the structure of turbulence in stationary ABL flows, real-world scenarios frequently deviate from stationarity, giving rise to nuanced and poorly understood changes in the turbulence geometry and associated transport mechanisms. This study sheds light on this problem by examining topological changes in ABL turbulence induced by non-stationarity and their effects on momentum transport. Results from a large-eddy simulation of pulsatile open channel flow over an array of surface-mounted cuboids are examined. The analysis reveals that the flow pulsation triggers a phase-dependent shear rate, and the ejection-sweep pattern varies with the shear rate during the pulsatile cycle. From a turbulence structure perspective, it is attributed to the changes in the geometry of hairpin vortices. An increase (decrease) in the shear rate intensifies (relaxes) these structures, leading to an increase (decrease) in the frequency of ejections and an amplification (reduction) of their percentage contribution to the total momentum flux. Furthermore, the size of the hairpin packets undergoes variations, which depend on the geometry of the constituting hairpin vortices, yet the packet inclination preserves its orientation throughout the pulsatile cycle. These observations reinforce the important role non-stationarity holds in shaping the structure of ABL turbulence and the momentum transport mechanisms it governs.

Using experiments and a depth-averaged numerical model, we study instabilities of two-phase flows in a Hele-Shaw channel with an elastic upper boundary and a non-uniform cross-section prescribed by initial collapse. Experimentally, we find increasingly complex and unsteady modes of air-finger propagation as the dimensionless bubble speed $Ca$ and level of collapse are increased, including pointed fingers, indented fingers and the feathered modes first identified by Cuttle et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 886, 2020, A20). By introducing a measure of the viscous contribution to finger propagation, we identify a $Ca$ threshold beyond which viscous forces are superseded by elastic effects. Quantitative prediction of this transition between ‘viscous’ and ‘elastic’ reopening regimes across levels of collapse establishes the fidelity of the numerical model. In the viscous regime, we recover the non-monotonic dependence on $Ca$ of the finger pressure, which is characteristic of benchtop models of airway reopening. To explore the elastic regime numerically, we extend the depth-averaged model introduced by Fontana et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 916, 2021, A27) to include an artificial disjoining pressure that prevents the unphysical self-intersection of the interface. Using time simulations, we capture for the first time the majority of experimental finger dynamics, including feathered modes. We show that these disordered states evolve continually, with no evidence of convergence to steady or periodic states. We find that the steady bifurcation structure satisfactorily predicts the bubble pressure as a function of $Ca$, but that it does not provide sufficient information to predict the transition to unsteady dynamics that appears strongly nonlinear.

An experimental study in a wind tunnel is presented to explore the wake of a floating wind turbine subjected to harmonic side-to-side and fore–aft motions under laminar inflow conditions. The wake recovery is analysed as a function of the frequency of motion $f_p$, expressed by the rotor-based Strouhal number, $St = f_p D / U_{\infty }$ ($D$ is the rotor diameter, $U_{\infty }$ the inflow wind speed). Our findings indicate that both directions of motion accelerate the transition to the far-wake compared with the fixed turbine. The experimental outcomes confirm the computational fluid dynamics results of Li et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 934, 2022, p. A29) showing that sideways motions lead to faster wake recovery, especially for $St \in [0.2, 0.6]$. Additionally, we find that fore–aft motions also lead to better recovery for $St \in [0.3, 0.9]$. The recovery is closely linked to nonlinear spatiotemporal dynamics found in the shear layer region of the wake. For both directions of motion and $St \in [0.2, 0.55]$, the noisy wake dynamics lock in to the frequency of the motion. In this synchronised-like state, sideways motions result in large coherent structures of meandering, and fore–aft movements induce coherent pulsing of the wake. For fore–aft motion and $St \in [0.55, 0.9]$, the wake shows a more complex quasiperiodic dynamic, namely, a self-generated meandering mode emerges, which interacts nonlinearly with the excitation frequency $St$, as evidenced by the occurrence of mixing components. The coherent structures grow nonlinearly, enhance wake mixing and accelerate the transition to the far-wake, which, once reached, exhibits universal behaviour.
