In this work, we employ well-established relations for compressible turbulent mean flows, including the velocity transformation and algebraic temperature–velocity (TV) relation, to systematically improve the algebraic Baldwin–Lomax (BL) wall model for high-speed zero-pressure-gradient air boundary layers. Any new functions or coefficients fitted by ourselves are avoided. Twelve published direct numerical simulation (DNS) datasets are employed for a priori inspiration and a posteriori examination, with Mach numbers up to 14 under adiabatic, cold and heated walls. The baseline BL model is the widely used one with semilocal scalings. Three targeted modifications are made. First, we employ a total-stress-based transformation (Griffin et al., Proc. Natl Acad. Sci. USA, vol. 118, issue 34, 2021, e2111144118) to the inner-layer eddy viscosity for improved scaling up to the logarithmic region. Second, we utilize the van Driest transformation in the outer layer based on the compressible defect velocity scaling. Third, considering the difficulty in modelling the rapidly varying and singular turbulent Prandtl number near the temperature peak in cold-wall cases, we design a two-layer strategy and use the TV relation to formulate the inner-layer temperature. Numerical results prove that the modifications take effect as designed. The prediction accuracy for mean streamwise velocity is notably improved for diabatic cases, especially in the logarithmic region. Moreover, a significant improvement in mean temperature is realized for both adiabatic and diabatic cases. The mean relative errors of temperature to DNS for all cases are down to 0.4 % in the logarithmic wall-normal coordinate and 3.4 % in the outer coordinate, around one-third of those in the baseline model.

Direct numerical simulations of channel flow and temporal boundary layer at a Reynolds number $Re_{\tau } = 1500$ are used to assess the scale-by-scale mechanisms of wall turbulence. From the peak of turbulence production embedded at the small scales of the near-wall region, spatially ascending reverse cascades are generated that move through self-similar eddies growing in size with the wall distance. These fluxes are followed by spatially ascending forward cascades through detached eddies thus reaching sufficiently small scales where eventually scale energy is dissipated. This phenomenology is shared by both boundary layer and channel flow and is recognized as a robust physical feature characterizing wall turbulence in general. Specific features related to the flow configuration are indeed identified in the outer region. In particular, the central region of channels is characterized by a generalized Richardson energy cascade where large scales are in equilibrium with small scales at different wall distances through a combined forward cascade and spatial flux. On the contrary, the interface region of boundary layers is characterized by an almost two-dimensional physics where spatially ascending reverse cascades sustain long and wide interface structures with a forward cascade that survives only in the wall-normal scales. The overall scenario consists in a variety of scale motions that while protruding from the turbulent core towards the external region, squeeze at the interface thus sustaining vertical shear in a thin layer. The observed multidimensional physics sheds light on the complex interactions between outer entrainment and near-wall self-sustaining mechanisms with possible repercussions for theories.

Although there is a range of approaches for classifying the wake structure behind an array of obstacles, these approaches provide inconsistent results across different array systems. This motivates the present study to integrate and reconcile these approaches into one that is consistent across different systems. This new, transferable classification approach is based on the dimensionless flow blockage of the array and the wake stability parameter. To demonstrate this approach, a series of laboratory experiments was conducted to characterise the wake structure behind an array of emergent cylinders across a practically relevant parameter space that has not previously been explored. Two arrays with the same values of flow blockage and wake stability parameters but different sizes display the same wake structure, demonstrating the controlling influence of these two parameters on the wake structure. This approach classifies four different wake structures, which are distinct in that they display differences in instantaneous and time-averaged flow fields, temporal velocity oscillations, shear layer growth and the length of the steady wake region. The dependence of the wake structure on the two parameters is a consequence of (i) the controlling influence of blockage on the fraction of incident flow passing through the array and (ii) the ability of shallowness to suppress wake instabilities and, to a lesser extent, also influence the velocity through the array. This paper provides a predictive framework for the wake structure based on knowledge of the array geometry, and the depth and velocity of incident flow across the entire relevant practical parameter space.

When a contaminated liquid evaporates from within a porous material, the impurities or dirt accumulate and deposit within the pore space. This occurs during the cleaning of filters and fouling of textiles, and is related to the ‘coffee-ring’ problem. To investigate how and where dirt is deposited in the pore space, we present a model for the motion of an evaporation front through a porous material, and the related accumulation, transport, and deposition of dirt, assuming that the liquid remains stationary. For physically relevant parameters, vapour transport out of the porous material is quasi-steady and we derive a single ordinary differential equation describing the motion of the evaporation front in time. Model solutions exhibit spatially non-uniform profiles of the deposited dirt-layer thickness through the porous material. The dirt accumulation and evaporation problems are coupled: deposited dirt hinders vapour transport through the porous material, slowing the evaporation. We identify two scenarios in which the porous material becomes clogged with dirt. Accumulation of suspended dirt at the evaporating interface along with slow dirt diffusion results in the deposited dirt layers clogging the pores at the evaporating interface, halting the drying and trapping liquid in the porous material. Alternatively, slow dirt deposition results in the suspended dirt being pushed far into the porous material by the evaporation, eventually leaving only dirt (with no liquid) in the pore space. We investigate the dynamics of both clogging scenarios, characterising the parameter regimes for which each occurs. Both clogging scenarios must be avoided in practice since they may be detrimental to future filter efficacy or textile breathability.

Stirring a fluid through a Gaussian forcing at a vanishingly small Reynolds number produces a Gaussian random field, while flows at higher Reynolds numbers exhibit non-Gaussianity, cascades, anomalous scaling and preferential alignments. Recent works (Yakhot & Donzis, Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 119, 2017, 044501; Khurshid et al., Phys. Rev. E, vol. 107, 2023, 045102) investigated the onset of these turbulent hallmarks in low-Reynolds-number flows by focusing on the scaling of the velocity gradients and velocity increments. They showed that the onset of power-law scalings in the velocity gradient statistics occurs at low Reynolds numbers, with the scaling exponents being surprisingly similar to those in the inertial range of fully developed turbulence. In this work we address the onset of turbulent signatures in low-Reynolds-number flows from the viewpoint of the velocity gradient dynamics, giving insights into its rich statistical geometry. We combine a perturbation theory of the full Navier–Stokes equations with velocity gradient modelling. This procedure results in a stochastic model for the velocity gradient in which the model coefficients follow directly from the Navier–Stokes equations and statistical homogeneity constraints. The Fokker–Planck equation associated with our stochastic model admits an analytic solution that shows the onset of turbulent hallmarks at low Reynolds numbers: skewness, intermittency and preferential alignments arise in the velocity gradient statistics through a smooth transition as the Reynolds number increases. The model predictions are in excellent agreement with direct numerical simulations of low-Reynolds-number flows.

The dynamics of stabilised concentrated emulsions presents a rich phenomenology including chaotic emulsification, non-Newtonian rheology and ageing dynamics at rest. Macroscopic rheology results from the complex droplet microdynamics and, in turn, droplet dynamics is influenced by macroscopic flows via the competing action of hydrodynamic and interfacial stresses, giving rise to a complex tangle of elastoplastic effects, diffusion, breakups and coalescence events. This tight multiscale coupling, together with the daunting challenge of experimentally investigating droplets under flow, has hindered the understanding of concentrated emulsions dynamics. We present results from three-dimensional numerical simulations of emulsions that resolve the shape and dynamics of individual droplets, along with the macroscopic flows. We investigate droplet dispersion statistics, measuring probability density functions (p.d.f.s) of droplet displacements and velocities, changing the concentration, in the stirred and ageing regimes. We provide the first measurements, in concentrated emulsions, of the relative droplet–droplet separations p.d.f. and of the droplet acceleration p.d.f., which becomes strongly non-Gaussian as the volume fraction is increased above the jamming point. Cooperative effects, arising when droplets are in contact, are argued to be responsible of the anomalous superdiffusive behaviour of the mean square displacement and of the pair separation at long times, in both the stirred and in the ageing regimes. This superdiffusive behaviour is reflected in a non-Gaussian pair separation p.d.f., whose analytical form is investigated, in the ageing regime, by means of theoretical arguments. This work paves the way to developing a connection between Lagrangian dynamics and rheology in concentrated emulsions.

The spontaneous formation of zonal jets is a distinctive feature of geostrophic turbulence with the phenomenon witnessed in numerous numerical studies. In such systems, strong rotation anisotropises the spectral evolution of the energy density such that zonal modes are favoured. In physical space, this manifests as eddies zonally elongating and forming into zonal jets. In the presence of large scale dissipation, the flow may reach statistical stationarity such that the zonal structure persists in the zonal and time mean, and is supported by a flux of eddy momentum. What is unclear is how the excitation of Rossby waves arranges the underlying eddy momentum stresses to support the mean flow structures. To study this, we examine a steady-state flow in the so-called ‘zonostrophic’ regime, in which characteristic scales of geostrophic turbulence are well separated and there are several alternating zonal jets that have formed spontaneously. We apply a geometric eddy ellipse formulation, in which momentum fluxes are cast as ellipses that encode information about the magnitude and direction of flux; the latter is described using the tilt angle. With the aid of a zonal filter, it is revealed that the scales responsible for providing the momentum fluxes associated with the jet structure are much smaller than the characteristic scales identified, and occupy a region of the energy spectrum that has been typically associated with isotropic dynamics.

A Marangoni surfer is an object embedded in a gas–liquid interface, propelled by gradients in surface tension. We derive an analytical theorem for the lower bound on the viscous dissipation by a Marangoni surfer in the limit of small Reynolds and capillary numbers. The minimum dissipation can be expressed with the reciprocal difference between drag coefficients of two passive bodies of the same shape as the Marangoni surfer, one in a force-free interface and the other in an interface with surface incompressibility. The distribution of surface tension that gives the optimal propulsion is given by the surface tension of the solution for the incompressible surface and the flow is a superposition of both solutions. For a surfer taking the form of a thin circular disk, the minimum dissipation is $16\mu a V^2$, giving a Lighthill efficiency of $1/3$. This places the Marangoni surfers among the hydrodynamically most efficient microswimmers.

We combine flow visualisation techniques and particle image velocimetry to experimentally investigate the higher-order transition to elastoinertial turbulence of Boger fluids ($El = 0.11\unicode{x2013}0.34$) in Taylor–Couette flows. The observed route to turbulence is associated with the appearance of chaotic inflow jets, termed flame patterns, for increasing inertia, and stable structures of solitons, known as diwhirls, for decreasing inertia. We also report for the first time spatially and temporally resolved flow fields in the meridional plane for the three characteristic viscoelastic flow regimes (diwhirls, flame patterns and elastoinertial turbulence). We observe in all cases coherent structures of dynamically independent solitary vortex pairs. The stability of these coherent structures is jet-dominated and can be mainly ascribed to the high extension of the polymer chains in the inflow boundaries in the $r$–$z$ plane. Solitary pairs are self-sustained when created through random events and do not split; instead, they merge when moving sufficiently close and annihilate when hoop stresses are not sufficient to sustain them. The highly localised and random events result in highly fluctuating, chaotic flow states. We estimate the decay exponent of spatial power spectral density, illustrating a universal scaling of $-2.5$ for elastoinertial turbulence. Based on our observations and in an effort to unify and combine precedent theories with our results, we suggest a mechanism for the origins of elastoinertial instabilities, accounting for both the effect of elasticity on the vortex formation and the effect of increasing/decreasing inertia on the flow dynamics.

The transient processes of laminar separation bubble (LSB) formation and bursting on a rectangular NACA 0018 wing are studied experimentally. A two-dimensional airfoil model is used as a baseline for the assessment of finite wing effects. The models are subjected to ramp changes in free-stream velocity causing the flow to switch between a state where an LSB forms and a state without reattachment. Lift force and particle image velocimetry measurements are used to relate the flow development to the aerodynamic loading. The lift coefficient of the airfoil exhibits substantial hysteresis, and the duration of the lift transients range from $10$ to $22$ convective time scales for bubble formation and $22$ to $30$ convective time scales for bursting. In contrast, the transient lift coefficients of the wing change gradually, with less hysteresis. The wing tip causes greater three-dimensionality in the separation bubble, whose thickness increases near the midspan where bursting is initiated. During bubble formation, the region of separated flow contracts towards the midspan. The gradual change in lift of the wing is linked to slower spanwise expansion and contraction of the separated flow region relative to the airfoil. On both models, the wavenumbers and amplitudes of disturbances in the separated shear layer rapidly change when reattachment initiates or ceases. Applying the bursting criterion of Gaster (Tech. Rep. Reports and Memoranda 3595. Aeronautical Research Council, London, 1967) to the bubble on the wing shows that bursting of the bubble at a single spanwise location is insufficient to cause complete spanwise failure of reattachment, and that the relationship between bursting parameters depends on spanwise position.

Birds employ rapid pitch-up motions close to the ground for different purposes: perching birds use this motion to decelerate and come to a complete stop while hunting birds, such as bald eagles, employ it to catch prey and swiftly fly away. Motivated by these observations, our study investigates how natural flyers accomplish diverse flying objectives by rapidly pitching their wings while decelerating near ground. We conducted experimental and analytical investigations focusing on rapidly pitching plates during deceleration in close proximity to the ground to explore the impact of ground proximity on the unsteady dynamics. Initially, we executed synchronous pitch-up motion, where both pitching and deceleration have the same motion duration, at different ground heights. Experimental results demonstrate that as the pitching wing approaches the ground, the instantaneous lift increases by approximately $38\,\%$ compared with a far-from-ground case, while the initial peak drag force remains relatively unchanged. Our analytical model conforms to this trend, predicting an increase in lift force as the wing approaches the ground, indicating enhanced added mass and circulatory lift force due to the ground effect. Next, we examined asynchronous pitch-up motion cases, where rapid pitching motions were initiated at different stages of deceleration. The results reveal that initiating the wing pitch early in the deceleration leads to the formation of larger counter-rotating vortices at the early stage of the manoeuvre. These vortices generate stronger dipole jets that orient backward in the later stages of the manoeuvre after impinging with the ground surface, which hunting birds utilize to accelerate after catching prey. Conversely, when the wing pitch is delayed, smaller vortices form, but their growth is postponed until late in the manoeuvre. This delayed vortex growth produces lift and drag force at the end phase of the manoeuvre that facilitates a smooth landing or perching. Thus, through strategic tuning of a rapid pitch-up motion with deceleration, natural flyers, such as birds, achieve diverse flying objectives.

Studying liquid jet impacts on a liquid pool is crucial for various engineering and environmental applications. During jet impact, the free surface of the pool deforms and a cavity is generated. Simultaneously, the free surface of the cavity extends radially outward and forms a rim. Eventually the cavity collapses by means of gas inertia and surface tension. Our numerical investigation using an axisymmetric model in Basilisk C explores cavity collapse dynamics under different impact velocities and gas densities. We validate our model against theory and experiments across a previously unexplored parameter range. Our results show two distinct regimes in the cavity collapse mechanism. By considering forces pulling along the interface, we derive scaling arguments for the time of closure and maximum radius of the cavity, based on the Weber number. For jets with uniform constant velocity from tip to tail and $We \leqslant 150$, the cavity closure is capillary-dominated and happens below the surface (deep seal). In contrast, for $We \geqslant 180$ the cavity closure happens above the surface (surface seal) and is dominated by the gas entrainment and the pressure gradient that it causes. Additionally, we monitor gas velocity and pressure throughout the impact process. This analysis reveals three critical moments of maximum gas velocity: before impact, at the instant of cavity collapse and during droplet ejection following cavity collapse. Our results provide information for understanding pollutant transport during droplet impacts on large bodies of water, and other engineering applications, like additive manufacturing, lithography and needle-free injections.

Direct numerical simulations are performed to investigate the characteristics of a turbulent core–annular flow with water-lubricated high viscosity oil in a horizontal pipe. Six different superficial velocity ratios ($\,j_w/j_o = 0.057\unicode{x2013}0.41$) are examined by changing the water superficial velocity $j_w$ for a fixed oil superficial velocity $j_o$. The pressure drops in the pipe and the shapes of the phase interface agree well with those from previous experiments. The oil core flow is almost a plug flow, and the gaps between the phase interface and pipe wall are narrow and wide near the upper and lower surfaces of the pipe, respectively, due to the buoyancy. Within a narrow gap, water is confined mostly in a valley region of the wavy phase interface and hardly goes through its crest. On the other hand, water near the phase interface at a wide gap convects downstream almost at the core speed and the flow near the wall is similar to that of single-phase wall-bounded turbulent flow. The annular flow is characterized by three different regimes depending on the clearance Reynolds number ($Re_c$) based on the core velocity and local gap size: laminar Couette flow driven by the core for $Re_c \le 600$, transitional flow for $600 < Re_c < 2500$ and turbulent flow for $Re_c \ge 2500$. The minimum pressure drop occurs at $j_w/j_o = 0.11$ in the early transition regime. For all $j_w/j_o$ considered, the negative lift force acting on the core comes from the pressure force which balances the buoyancy.

A wide range of environmental, energy, medical and biological processes rely on dispersive transport through complex media. Yet, because of the stagnant and opaque nature of the microscopic system, the role of disordered flow and structure in the dispersive transport of solutes remains poorly understood. Here, we use a circular porous microfluidic system to investigate the radial dispersion in porous media driven by non-Newtonian fluids with strong advection rate (or at high Péclet number) and low-to-moderate Reynolds numbers. We observe for the first time the presence of diffusion ‘blind zones’ in the microstructure for high solution injection velocities. More specifically, an in-depth analysis uncovers that the circumferential flow frame, coformed by obstacles and vortices especially the ‘twin-vortex’ with same rotation direction, is responsible for the diffusion ‘blind zones’ and transport heterogeneity. The vortices are induced by the coupling of microfluidics and porous structures, and correlated to inertial flow-induced instabilities. The trade-off between diffusion efficiency and quality/completeness with respect to the high Péclet number (or high inlet velocity) serves to enhance our comprehension of intricate fluid dynamics and affords a set of principles to aid a diverse range of practical implementations.

We investigate theoretically and numerically the impact of an elastic sphere on a rigid wall in a viscous fluid. Our focus is on the dynamics of the contact, employing the soft lubrication model in which the sphere is separated from the wall by a thin liquid film. In the limit of large sphere inertia, the sphere bounces and the dynamics is close to the Hertz theory. Remarkably, the film thickness separating the sphere from the wall exhibits non-trivial self-similar properties that vary during the spreading and retraction phases. Leveraging these self-similar properties, we establish the energy budget and predict the coefficient of restitution for the sphere. The general framework derived here opens many perspectives to study the lubrication film in impact problems.

Applying a variational analysis, a minimum-enstrophy vortex in three-dimensional (3-D) fluids with continuous stratification is found, under the quasi-geostrophic hypothesis. The buoyancy frequency is held constant. This vortex is an ideal limiting state in a flow with an enstrophy decay while energy and generalized angular momentum remain fixed. The variational method used to obtain two-dimensional (2-D) minimum-enstrophy vortices is applied here to 3-D integral quantities. The solution from the first-order variation is expanded on a basis of orthogonal spherical Bessel functions. By computing second-order variations, the solution is found to be a true minimum in enstrophy. This solution is weakly unstable when inserted in a numerical code of the quasi-geostrophic equations. After a stage of linear instability, nonlinear wave interaction leads to the reorganization of this vortex into a tripolar vortex. Further work will relate our solution with maximal entropy 3-D vortices.

The validity of the Oberbeck–Boussinesq (OB) approximation in Rayleigh–Bénard (RB) convection is studied using the Gray & Giorgini (Intl J. Heat Mass Transfer, vol. 19, 1976, pp. 545–551) criterion that requires that the residuals, i.e. the terms that distinguish the full governing equations from their OB approximations, are kept below a certain small threshold $\hat {\sigma }$. This gives constraints on the temperature and pressure variations of the fluid properties (density, absolute viscosity, specific heat at constant pressure $c_p$, thermal expansion coefficient and thermal conductivity) and on the magnitudes of the pressure work and viscous dissipation terms in the heat equation, which all can be formulated as bounds regarding the maximum temperature difference in the system, $\varDelta$, and the container height, $L$. Thus for any given fluid and $\hat {\sigma }$, one can calculate the OB-validity region (in terms of $\varDelta$ and $L$) and also the maximum achievable Rayleigh number ${{Ra}}_{max,\hat {\sigma }}$, and we did so for fluids water, air, helium and pressurized SF$_6$ at room temperature, and cryogenic helium, for $\hat {\sigma }=5\,\%$, $10\,\%$ and $20\,\%$. For the most popular fluids in high-${{Ra}}$ RB measurements, which are cryogenic helium and pressurized SF$_6$, we have identified the most critical residual, which is associated with the temperature dependence of $c_p$. Our direct numerical simulations (DNS) showed, however, that even when the values of $c_p$ can differ almost twice within the convection cell, this feature alone cannot explain a sudden and strong enhancement in the heat transport in the system, compared with its OB analogue.

Biological microorganisms and artificial micro-swimmers often locomote in heterogeneous viscous environments consisting of networks of obstacles embedded into viscous fluid media. In this work, we use the squirmer model and present a numerical investigation of the effects of shape on swimming in a heterogeneous medium. Specifically, we analyse the microorganism's propulsion speed as well as its energetic cost and swimming efficiency. The analysis allows us to probe the general characteristics of swimming in a heterogeneous viscous environment in comparison with the case of a purely viscous fluid. We found that a spheroidal microorganism always propels faster, expends less energy and is more efficient than a spherical microorganism in either a homogeneous fluid or a heterogeneous medium. Moreover, we determined that above a critical eccentricity, a spheroidal microorganism in a heterogeneous medium can swim faster than a spherical microorganism in a homogeneous fluid. Based on an analysis of the forces acting on the squirmer, we offer an explanation for the decrease in the squirmer's speed observed in heterogeneous media compared with homogeneous fluids.

We study the instantaneous inference of an unbounded planar flow from sparse noisy pressure measurements. The true flow field comprises one or more regularized point vortices of various strength and size. We interpret the true flow's measurements with a vortex estimator, also consisting of regularized vortices, and attempt to infer the positions and strengths of this estimator assuming little prior knowledge. The problem often has several possible solutions, many due to a variety of symmetries. To deal with this ill posedness and to quantify the uncertainty, we develop the vortex estimator in a Bayesian setting. We use Markov-chain Monte Carlo and a Gaussian mixture model to sample and categorize the probable vortex states in the posterior distribution, tailoring the prior to avoid spurious solutions. Through experiments with one or more true vortices, we reveal many aspects of the vortex inference problem. With fewer sensors than states, the estimator infers a manifold of equally possible states. Using one more sensor than states ensures that no cases of rank deficiency arise. Uncertainty grows rapidly with distance when a vortex lies outside of the vicinity of the sensors. Vortex size cannot be reliably inferred, but the position and strength of a larger vortex can be estimated with a much smaller one. In estimates of multiple vortices their individual signs are discernible because of the nonlinear coupling in the pressure. When the true vortex state is inferred from an estimator of fewer vortices, the estimate approximately aggregates the true vortices where possible.
