We present a generalisation of efficient numerical frameworks for modelling fluid–filament interactions via the discretisation of a recently developed, non-local integral equation formulation to incorporate regularised Stokeslets with half-space boundary conditions, as motivated by the importance of confining geometries in many applications. We proceed to utilise this framework to examine the drag on slender inextensible filaments moving near a boundary, firstly with a relatively simple example, evaluating the accuracy of resistive force theories near boundaries using regularised Stokeslet segments. This highlights that resistive force theories do not accurately quantify filament dynamics in a range of circumstances, even with analytical corrections for the boundary. However, there is the notable and important exception of movement in a plane parallel to the boundary, where accuracy is maintained. In particular, this justifies the judicious use of resistive force theories in examining the mechanics of filaments and monoflagellate microswimmers with planar flagellar patterns moving parallel to boundaries. We proceed to apply the numerical framework developed here to consider how filament elastohydrodynamics can impact drag near a boundary, analysing in detail the complex responses of a passive cantilevered filament to an oscillatory flow. In particular, we document the emergence of an asymmetric periodic beating in passive filaments in particular parameter regimes, which are remarkably similar to the power and reverse strokes exhibited by motile $9+2$ cilia. Furthermore, these changes in the morphology of the filament beating, arising from the fluid–structure interactions, also induce a significant increase in the hydrodynamic drag of the filament.

In self-excited combustion systems, the application of open-loop forcing is known to be an effective strategy for controlling periodic thermoacoustic oscillations, but it is not known whether and under what conditions such a strategy would work on thermoacoustic oscillations that are not simply periodic. In this study, we experimentally examine the effect of periodic acoustic forcing on a prototypical thermoacoustic system consisting of a ducted laminar premixed flame oscillating quasiperiodically on an ergodic $\mathbb{T}^{2}$ torus at two incommensurate natural frequencies, $f_{1}$ and $f_{2}$. Compared with that of a classical period-1 system, complete synchronization of this $\mathbb{T}_{1,2}^{2}$ system is found to occur via a more intricate route involving three sequential steps: as the forcing amplitude, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}_{f}$, increases at a fixed forcing frequency, $f_{f}$, the system transitions first (i) to ergodic $\mathbb{T}_{1,2,f}^{3}$ quasiperiodicity; then (ii) to resonant $\mathbb{T}_{1,f}^{2}$ quasiperiodicity as the weaker of the two natural modes, $f_{2}$, synchronizes first, leading to partial synchronization; and finally (iii) to a $P1_{f}$ limit cycle as the remaining natural mode, $f_{1}$, also synchronizes, leading to complete synchronization. The minimum $\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}_{f}$ required for partial and complete synchronization decreases as $f_{f}$ approaches either $f_{1}$ or $f_{2}$, resulting in two primary Arnold tongues. However, when forced at an amplitude above that required for complete synchronization, the system can transition out of $P1_{f}$ and into $\mathbb{T}_{1,2,f}^{3}$ or $\mathbb{T}_{2,f}^{2}$. The optimal control strategy is to apply off-resonance forcing at a frequency around the weaker natural mode ($f_{2}$) and at an amplitude just sufficient to cause $P1_{f}$, because this produces the largest reduction in thermoacoustic amplitude via asynchronous quenching. Analysis of the Rayleigh index shows that this reduction is physically caused by a disruption of the positive coupling between the unsteady heat release rate of the flame and the $f_{1}$ and $f_{2}$ acoustic modes. If the forcing is applied near the stronger natural mode ($f_{1}$), however, resonant amplification can occur. We then phenomenologically model this $\mathbb{T}_{1,2}^{2}$ thermoacoustic system as two reactively coupled van der Pol oscillators subjected to external sinusoidal forcing, and find that many of its synchronization features – such as the three-step route to $P1_{f}$, the double Arnold tongues, asynchronous quenching and resonant amplification – can be qualitatively reproduced. This shows that these features are not limited to our particular system, but are universal features of forced self-excited oscillators. This study extends the applicability of open-loop control from classical period-1 systems with just a single time scale to ergodic $\mathbb{T}^{2}$ quasiperiodic systems with two incommensurate time scales.

In turbulent planar Couette flow under anticyclonic spanwise system rotation, large-scale roll-cell structures arise due to a Coriolis-force-induced instability. The structures are superimposed on smaller-scale turbulence, and with increasing angular velocity ($\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}_{z}$) such roll cells dominate the flow field and small-scale turbulence is instead suppressed in a certain rotation number range $0<Ro\lesssim 0.1$ ($Ro=2\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}_{z}h/U_{w}$, where $h$ is the channel half-width, $U_{w}$ the wall velocity). At low rotation numbers around $Ro\approx 0.02$ both large-scale roll cells and smaller-scale turbulence coexist. In the present study, we investigate interaction between these structures through a scale-by-scale analysis of the Reynolds stress transport. We show that at low rotation numbers $Ro\approx 0.01$ the turbulence productions by the mean flow gradient and the Coriolis force occur at different scales and thereby the turbulent energy distribution over a wide range of scales is maintained. On the other hand at higher rotation numbers $Ro\gtrsim 0.05$, a zero-absolute-vorticity state is established and production of small scales from the mean shear disappears although large-scale turbulence production is maintained through the Coriolis force. At high enough Reynolds numbers, where scale separation between the near-wall structures and the roll cells is relatively distinct, transition between these different $Ro$ regimes is found to occur rather abruptly around $Ro\approx 0.02$, resulting in a non-monotonic behaviour of the wall shear stress as a function of $Ro$. It is also shown that at such an intermediate rotation number the roll cells interact with smaller scales by moving near-wall structures towards the core region of the channel, by which the Reynolds stress is transported from relatively small scales near the wall towards larger scales in the channel centre. Such Reynolds stress transport by scale interaction becomes increasingly significant as the Reynolds number increases, and results in a reversed mean velocity gradient at the channel centre at high enough Reynolds numbers.

Unsteady flow fields over a circular cylinder are used for training and then prediction using four different deep learning networks: generative adversarial networks with and without consideration of conservation laws; and convolutional neural networks with and without consideration of conservation laws. Flow fields at future occasions are predicted based on information on flow fields at previous occasions. Predictions of deep learning networks are made for flow fields at Reynolds numbers that were not used during training. Physical loss functions are proposed to explicitly provide information on conservation of mass and momentum to deep learning networks. An adversarial training is applied to extract features of flow dynamics in an unsupervised manner. Effects of the proposed physical loss functions and adversarial training on predicted results are analysed. Captured and missed flow physics from predictions are also analysed. Predicted flow fields using deep learning networks are in good agreement with flow fields computed by numerical simulations.

The most important unanswered questions in turbulence regard the nature of turbulent flow in the limit of infinite Reynolds number. The Princeton superpipe (PSP) data comprise 26 velocity profiles that cover three orders of magnitude in the Reynolds number from $Re=19\,639$, to $Re=20\,088\,000$ based on pipe radius and pipe centreline velocity. In this paper classical mixing length theory is combined with a new mixing length model of the turbulent shear stress to solve the streamwise momentum equation and the solution is used to approximate the PSP velocity profiles. The model velocity profile is uniformly valid from the wall to the pipe centreline and comprises five free parameters that are selected through a minimization process to provide an accurate approximation to each of the 26 profiles. The model profile is grounded in the momentum equation and allows the velocity derivative, Reynolds shear stress and turbulent kinetic energy production to be studied. The results support the conclusion that logarithmic velocity behaviour near the wall is not present in the data below a pipe Reynolds number somewhere between $Re=59\,872$, and $Re=87\,150$. Above $Re=87\,150$, the data show a very clear, nearly logarithmic, region. But even at the highest Reynolds numbers there is still a weak algebraic dependence of the intermediate portion of the velocity profile on both the near-wall and outer flow length scales. One of the five parameters in the model profile is equivalent to the well-known Kármán constant, $k$. The parameter $k$ increases almost monotonically from $k=0.4034$ at $Re=87\,150$ to $k=0.4190$ at $Re=20\,088\,000$, with an average value, $k=0.4092$. The variation of the remaining four model parameters is relatively small and, with all five parameters fixed at average values, the model profile reproduces the entire velocity data set and the wall friction reasonably well. With optimal values of the parameters used for each model profile, the fit to the PSP survey data is very good. Transforming the model velocity profile using the group, $u/u_{0}\rightarrow ku/u_{0}$, $y^{+}\rightarrow ky^{+}$ and $R_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}}\rightarrow kR_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}}$ where $R_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}}$ is the friction Reynolds number, leads to a reduced expression for the velocity profile. When the reduced profile is cast in outer variables, the physical velocity profile is expressed in terms of $\ln (y/\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF})$ and a new shape function $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}(y/\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF})$. In the limit of infinite Reynolds number, the velocity profile asymptotes to plug flow with a vanishingly thin viscous wall layer and a continuous derivative everywhere. The shape function evaluated at the pipe centreline is used to produce a new friction law with an additive constant that depends on the Kármán constant and a wall damping length scale.

Instabilities of a viscous fluid between two fast but differentially rotating concentric spheres, the so-called spherical Couette flow, with a fixed radius ratio of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D702}=r_{i}/r_{o}=1/3$ are studied, where $r_{i}$ is the inner and $r_{o}$ the outer radius of the spherical shell. Of particular interest is the difference between cases where the Rossby number $Ro=(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}_{i}-\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}_{o})/\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}_{o}>0$ and cases with $Ro<0$, where $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}_{i}$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}_{o}$ are the inner- and outer-sphere angular velocities. The basic state in both situations is an axisymmetric shear flow with a Stewartson layer situated on the tangent cylinder. The tangent cylinder is given by a cylinder that touches the equator of the inner sphere with an axis parallel to the axis of rotation. The experimental results presented fully confirm earlier numerical results obtained by Hollerbach (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 492, 2003, pp. 289–302) showing that for $Ro>0$ a progression to higher azimuthal wavenumbers $m$ can be seen as the rotation rate $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}_{0}$ increases, but $Ro<0$ gives $m=1$ over a large range of rotation rates. It is further found that in the former case the modes have spiral structures radiating away from Stewartson layer towards the outer shell whereas for $Ro<0$ the modes are trapped in the vicinity of the Stewartson layer. Further, the mean flow excited by inertial mode self-interaction and its correlation with the mode’s amplitudes are investigated. The scaling of the critical $Ro$ with Ekman number $E=\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}/(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}_{o}\,d^{2})$, where $\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}$ is the kinematic viscosity and $d$ the gap width, is well within the bounds that have been established in a number of experimental studies using cylindrical geometries and numerical studies using spherical cavities. However, the present work is the first that experimentally examines Stewartson-layer instabilities as a function of the sign of $Ro$ for the true spherical-shell geometry.

In this paper we contrast the early impact stage of a highly viscous drop onto a liquid versus a solid substrate. Water drops impacting at low velocities can rebound from a solid surface without contact. This dynamic is mediated through lubrication of a thin air layer between the liquid and solid. Drops can also rebound from a liquid surface, but only for low Weber numbers. Impacts at higher velocities in both cases lead to circular contacts which entrap an air disc under the centre of the drop. Increasing the drop viscosity produces extended air films for impacts on a smooth solid surface even for much larger velocities. These air films eventually break through random wetting contacts with the solid. Herein we use high-speed interferometry to study the extent and thickness profile of the air film for a large-viscosity drop impacting onto a viscous film of the same liquid. We demonstrate a unified scaling of the centreline height of the air film for impacts on both solid and liquid, when using the effective impact velocity. On the other hand, we show that the large-viscosity liquid film promotes air films of larger extent. Furthermore, the rupture behaviour becomes fundamentally different, with the air film between the two compliant surfaces being more stable, lacking the random wetting patches seen on the solid. We map the parameter range where these air films occur and explore the transition from gliding to ring contact at the edge of the drop dimple. After the air film ruptures, the initial contraction occurs very rapidly and for viscosities greater than 100 cSt the retraction velocity of the air film is ${\sim}0.3~\text{m}~\text{s}^{-1}$, independent of the liquid viscosity and impact velocity, in sharp contrast with theoretical predictions.

We perform direct numerical simulations (DNS) of emulsions in homogeneous isotropic turbulence using a pseudopotential lattice-Boltzmann (PP-LB) method. Improving on previous literature by minimizing droplet dissolution and spurious currents, we show that the PP-LB technique is capable of long stable simulations in certain parameter regions. Varying the dispersed-phase volume fraction $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}$, we demonstrate that droplet breakup extracts kinetic energy from the larger scales while injecting energy into the smaller scales, increasingly with higher $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}$, with approximately the Hinze scale (Hinze, AIChE J., vol. 1 (3), 1955, pp. 289–295) separating the two effects. A generalization of the Hinze scale is proposed, which applies both to dense and dilute suspensions, including cases where there is a deviation from the $k^{-5/3}$ inertial range scaling and where coalescence becomes dominant. This is done using the Weber number spectrum $We(k)$, constructed from the multiphase kinetic energy spectrum $E(k)$, which indicates the critical droplet scale at which $We\approx 1$. This scale roughly separates coalescence and breakup dynamics as it closely corresponds to the transition of the droplet size ($d$) distribution into a $d^{-10/3}$ scaling (Garrett et al., J. Phys. Oceanogr., vol. 30 (9), 2000, pp. 2163–2171; Deane & Stokes, Nature, vol. 418 (6900), 2002, p. 839). We show the need to maintain a separation of the turbulence forcing scale and domain size to prevent the formation of large connected regions of the dispersed phase. For the first time, we show that turbulent emulsions evolve into a quasi-equilibrium cycle of alternating coalescence and breakup dominated processes. Studying the system in its state-space comprising kinetic energy $E_{k}$, enstrophy $\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}^{2}$ and the droplet number density $N_{d}$, we find that their dynamics resemble limit cycles with a time delay. Extreme values in the evolution of $E_{k}$ are manifested in the evolution of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}^{2}$ and $N_{d}$ with a delay of ${\sim}0.3{\mathcal{T}}$ and ${\sim}0.9{\mathcal{T}}$ respectively (with ${\mathcal{T}}$ the large eddy timescale). Lastly, we also show that flow topology of turbulence in an emulsion is significantly more different from single-phase turbulence than previously thought. In particular, vortex compression and axial straining mechanisms increase in the droplet phase.

Based on recent numerical simulations and field experiments, the mechanism behind wake meandering is increasingly accepted to be through the amplification of upstream disturbances owing to the convectively unstable nature of the flow. In this paper, we deduce a low-order phenomenological model for the far-wake region, which is based on a modified form of the complex Ginzburg–Landau (CGL) equation for flows that are in the amplifier regime, i.e. are only convectively unstable. The model reproduces the main qualitative features of wake meandering: (i) its origin via amplification of upstream structures, (ii) dependence of oscillation frequency on the upstream disturbance amplitude (higher amplitudes lead to lower frequencies), (iii) shift towards lower frequencies as the wake flow evolves in the streamwise direction and, to an extent, (iv) the transfer of energy from very low frequencies towards relatively higher frequencies. Additionally, the model also predicts the increase in the meandering amplitude and an advancement in its onset with increasing thrust coefficient. To our knowledge, this is the first low-order dynamical system in the literature that models wake meandering. The model coefficients are obtained from the mean flow local stability results that we show correctly account for the changing operating conditions and thus pave way for the prediction of wake meandering features. Its low order makes it suitable to use inside an energy farm design model, where it can help to mitigate the adverse effects of wake meandering.

Accurate low-dimensional models for the dynamics of falling liquid films subject to localized or time-varying heating are essential for applications that involve patterning or control. However, existing modelling methodologies either fail to respect fundamental thermodynamic properties or else do not accurately capture the effects of advection and diffusion on the temperature profile. We argue that the best-performing long-wave models are those that give the surface temperature implicitly as the solution of an evolution equation in which the wall temperature alone (and none of its derivatives) appears as a source term. We show that, for both flat and non-uniform films, such a model can be rationally derived by expanding the temperature field about its free-surface values. We test this model in linear and nonlinear regimes, and show that its predictions are in remarkable quantitative agreement with full Navier–Stokes calculations regarding the surface temperature, the internal temperature field and the surface displacement that would result from temperature-induced Marangoni stresses.

A three-dimensional transient round liquid jet within a low-speed coaxial outer gas flow is numerically simulated and analysed via vortex dynamics ($\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}_{2}$ analysis). Two types of surface deformations are distinguished, which are separated by a large indentation on the jet stem. First, there are those inside the recirculation zone behind the leading cap – directly affecting the cap dynamics and well explained by the local vortices. Second, deformations upstream of the cap are mainly driven by the Kelvin–Helmholtz (KH) instability, unaffected by the vortices in the behind-the-cap region (BCR), and are important in the eventual atomization process. Different atomization mechanisms are identified and are delineated on a gas Weber number ($We_{g}$) versus liquid Reynolds number ($Re_{l}$) map based on the relative gas–liquid velocity. In a frame moving with the liquid velocity, this result is consistent with prior temporal studies. A simpler and clearer portrait of similarity of the atomization domains is shown by using the relative gas–liquid axial velocity, i.e. $We_{r}$ and $Re_{r}$, and avoiding the widely used velocity ratio as a third key parameter. A detailed comparison of vorticity along the axis in an Eulerian frame versus a frame fixed to a surface wave reveals that the vortex development and surface deformations are periodic in the upstream region, but this periodicity is lost closer to the BCR. In the practical range of the density ratio and for early times in the process, axial vorticity is mainly generated by baroclinicity while streamwise vortex stretching becomes more important at later times and only at lower relative velocities when pressure gradients are reduced. The inertia, vortex, pressure, viscous and surface tension forces are analysed to delineate the dominant causes of the three-dimensional instability of the axisymmetric KH structure due to surface acceleration in the axial, radial and azimuthal directions. The inertia force related to the axial gradient of kinetic energy is the main cause of the axial acceleration of the waves, while the azimuthal acceleration is mainly caused by the pressure and viscous forces. The viscous forces are negligible in the radial direction and away from the nozzle exit in the axial direction. It is interesting to note that azimuthal viscous forces are important even at high $Re_{l}$, indicating that inertia is not totally dominant in this instability occurring early in the atomization cascade.

Thermal fluctuations have been shown to influence the thinning dynamics of planar thin liquid films, bringing predicted rupture times closer to experiments. Most liquid films in nature and industry are, however, non-planar. Thinning of such films not just results from the interplay between stabilizing surface tension forces and destabilizing van der Waals forces, but also from drainage due to curvature differences. This work explores the influence of thermal fluctuations on the dynamics of thin non-planar films subjected to drainage, with their dynamics governed by two parameters: the strength of thermal fluctuations, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}$, and the strength of drainage, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D705}$. For strong drainage ($\unicode[STIX]{x1D705}\gg \unicode[STIX]{x1D705}_{tr}$), we find that the film ruptures due to the formation of a local depression called a dimple that appears at the connection between the curved and flat parts of the film. For this dimple-dominated regime, the rupture time, $t_{r}$, solely depends on $\unicode[STIX]{x1D705}$, according to the earlier reported scaling, $t_{r}\sim \unicode[STIX]{x1D705}^{-10/7}$. By contrast, for weak drainage ($\unicode[STIX]{x1D705}\ll \unicode[STIX]{x1D705}_{tr}$), the film ruptures at a random location due to the spontaneous growth of fluctuations originating from thermal fluctuations. In this fluctuations-dominated regime, the rupture time solely depends on $\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}$ as $t_{r}\sim -(1/\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}_{max})\ln (\sqrt{2\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}})^{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}}$, with $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}=1.15$. This scaling is rationalized using linear stability theory, which yields $\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}_{max}$ as the growth rate of the fastest-growing wave and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}=1$. These insights on if, when and how thermal fluctuations play a role are instrumental in predicting the dynamics and rupture time of non-flat draining thin films.

An interface between two miscible fluids is transient, existing as a non-equilibrium state before complete molecular mixing is reached. However, during the existence of such an interface, which typically occurs at relatively short time scales, composition gradients at the boundary between the two liquids cause stresses effectively mimicking an interfacial tension. Here, we combine numerical modelling and experiments to study the influence of an effective interfacial tension between a colloidal fibre dispersion and its own solvent on the flow in a microfluidic system. In a flow-focusing channel, the dispersion is injected as core flow that is hydrodynamically focused by its solvent as sheath flows. This leads to the formation of a long fluid thread, which is characterized in three dimensions using optical coherence tomography and simulated using a volume of fluid method. The simulated flow and thread geometries very closely reproduce the experimental results in terms of thread topology and velocity flow fields. By varying the interfacial tension numerically, we show that it controls the thread development, which can be described by an effective capillary number. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the applied methodology provide the means to measure the ultra-low but dynamically highly significant effective interfacial tension.

An experimental study of bluff bodies in confinement is presented. Two Reynolds matched rigs (pipe diameters: $D=40~\text{mm}$ and $D=194~\text{mm}$) are used to derive a picture of the flow topology of the primary-shedding mode (Kármán vortex, mode-I). Confined bluff bodies create an additional spectral mode (mode-II). This is caused by the close coupling of the shedder blockage and the wall and is unique to the confined bluff-body problem. Under certain conditions, modes-I and II can interact, resulting in a lock-on, wherein the modes cease to exist at independent frequencies. The topological effects of mode interaction are demonstrated using flow visualisation. Furthermore, the scaling of mode-II is explored. The two experimental facilities span Reynolds numbers (based on the shedder diameter, $d$) $10^{4}<Re_{d}<10^{5}$ and bulk Mach numbers $0.02<M_{b}<0.4$. Bluff bodies with a constant blockage ratio ($d/D$), forebody shape and various splitter-plate lengths ($l$) and thicknesses ($t$) are used. Results indicate that the flow topology changes substantially between short ($l<d$) and long ($l>d$) tailed geometries. Surface flow visualisation indicates that the primary vortex becomes anchored on the tail when $l\gtrsim 3h$ ($2h=d-t$). This criterion prohibits the development of such a topology for short-tailed geometries. When mode interaction occurs, which it does exclusively in long-tailed cases, the tail-anchored vortex pattern is disrupted. The onset of mode-II occurs at approximately the same Reynolds number in both rigs, although the associated dimensionless frequency is principally a function of Mach number. Accordingly, mode interaction is avoided in the larger-scale rig, due to the increased separation of the modal frequencies.

We simulate the flow of two immiscible and incompressible fluids separated by an interface in a homogeneous turbulent shear flow at a shear Reynolds number equal to 15 200. The viscosity and density of the two fluids are equal, and various surface tensions and initial droplet diameters are considered in the present study. We show that the two-phase flow reaches a statistically stationary turbulent state sustained by a non-zero mean turbulent production rate due to the presence of the mean shear. Compared to single-phase flow, we find that the resulting steady-state conditions exhibit reduced Taylor-microscale Reynolds numbers owing to the presence of the dispersed phase, which acts as a sink of turbulent kinetic energy for the carrier fluid. At steady state, the mean power of surface tension is zero and the turbulent production rate is in balance with the turbulent dissipation rate, with their values being larger than in the reference single-phase case. The interface modifies the energy spectrum by introducing energy at small scales, with the difference from the single-phase case reducing as the Weber number increases. This is caused by both the number of droplets in the domain and the total surface area increasing monotonically with the Weber number. This reflects also in the droplet size distribution, which changes with the Weber number, with the peak of the distribution moving to smaller sizes as the Weber number increases. We show that the Hinze estimate for the maximum droplet size, obtained considering break-up in homogeneous isotropic turbulence, provides an excellent estimate notwithstanding the action of significant coalescence and the presence of a mean shear.

In this paper, we experimentally study the influence of large-scale Taylor rolls on the small-scale statistics and the flow organization in fully turbulent Taylor–Couette flow for Reynolds numbers up to $Re_{S}=3\times 10^{5}$. The velocity field in the gap confined by coaxial and independently rotating cylinders at a radius ratio of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D702}=0.714$ is measured using planar particle image velocimetry in horizontal planes at different cylinder heights. Flow regions with and without prominent Taylor vortices are compared. We show that the local angular momentum transport (expressed in terms of a Nusselt number) mainly takes place in the regions of the vortex in- and outflow, where the radial and azimuthal velocity components are highly correlated. The efficient momentum transfer is reflected in intermittent bursts, which becomes visible in the exponential tails of the probability density functions of the local Nusselt number. In addition, by calculating azimuthal energy co-spectra, small-scale plumes are revealed to be the underlying structure of these bursts. These flow features are very similar to the one observed in Rayleigh–Bénard convection, which emphasizes the analogies of these systems. By performing a complex proper orthogonal decomposition, we remarkably detect azimuthally travelling waves superimposed on the turbulent Taylor vortices, not only in the classical but also in the ultimate regime. This very large-scale flow pattern, which is most pronounced at the axial location of the vortex centre, is similar to the well-known wavy Taylor vortex flow, which has comparable wave speeds, but much larger azimuthal wavenumbers.

Dense granular flows can spontaneously self-channelise by forming a pair of parallel-sided static levees on either side of a central flowing channel. This process prevents lateral spreading and maintains the flow thickness, and hence mobility, enabling the grains to run out considerably further than a spreading flow on shallow slopes. Since levees commonly form in hazardous geophysical mass flows, such as snow avalanches, debris flows, lahars and pyroclastic flows, this has important implications for risk management in mountainous and volcanic regions. In this paper an avalanche model that incorporates frictional hysteresis, as well as depth-averaged viscous terms derived from the $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}(I)$-rheology, is used to quantitatively model self-channelisation and levee formation. The viscous terms are crucial for determining a smoothly varying steady-state velocity profile across the flowing channel, which has the important property that it does not exert any shear stresses at the levee–channel interfaces. For a fixed mass flux, the resulting boundary value problem for the velocity profile also uniquely determines the width and height of the channel, and the predictions are in very good agreement with existing experimental data for both spherical and angular particles. It is also shown that in the absence of viscous (second-order gradient) terms, the problem degenerates, to produce plug flow in the channel with two frictionless contact discontinuities at the levee–channel margins. Such solutions are not observed in experiments. Moreover, the steady-state inviscid problem lacks a thickness or width selection mechanism and consequently there is no unique solution. The viscous theory is therefore a significant step forward. Fully time-dependent numerical simulations to the viscous model are able to quantitatively capture the process in which the flow self-channelises and show how the levees are initially emplaced behind the flow head. Both experiments and numerical simulations show that the height and width of the channel are not necessarily fixed by these initial values, but respond to changes in the supplied mass flux, allowing narrowing and widening of the channel long after the initial front has passed by. In addition, below a critical mass flux the steady-state solutions become unstable and time-dependent numerical simulations are able to capture the transition to periodic erosion–deposition waves observed in experiments.

Shallow granular avalanches on slopes close to repose exhibit hysteretic behaviour. For instance, when a steady-uniform granular flow is brought to rest it leaves a deposit of thickness $h_{stop}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D701})$ on a rough slope inclined at an angle $\unicode[STIX]{x1D701}$ to the horizontal. However, this layer will not spontaneously start to flow again until it is inclined to a higher angle $\unicode[STIX]{x1D701}_{start}$, or the thickness is increased to $h_{start}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D701})>h_{stop}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D701})$. This simple phenomenology leads to a rich variety of flows with co-existing regions of solid-like and fluid-like granular behaviour that evolve in space and time. In particular, frictional hysteresis is directly responsible for the spontaneous formation of self-channelized flows with static levees, retrogressive failures as well as erosion–deposition waves that travel through the material. This paper is motivated by the experimental observation that a travelling-wave develops, when a steady uniform flow of carborundum particles on a bed of larger glass beads, runs out to leave a deposit that is approximately equal to $h_{stop}$. Numerical simulations using the friction law originally proposed by Edwards et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 823, 2017, pp. 278–315) and modified here, demonstrate that there are in fact two travelling waves. One that marks the trailing edge of the steady-uniform flow and another that rapidly deposits the particles, directly connecting the point of minimum dynamic friction (at thickness $h_{\ast }$) with the deposited layer. The first wave moves slightly faster than the second wave, and so there is a slowly expanding region between them in which the flow thins and the particles slow down. An exact inviscid solution for the second travelling wave is derived and it is shown that for a steady-uniform flow of thickness $h_{\ast }$ it produces a deposit close to $h_{stop}$ for all inclination angles. Numerical simulations show that the two-wave structure deposits layers that are approximately equal to $h_{stop}$ for all initial thicknesses. This insensitivity to the initial conditions implies that $h_{stop}$ is a universal quantity, at least for carborundum particles on a bed of larger glass beads. Numerical simulations are therefore able to capture the complete experimental staircase procedure, which is commonly used to determine the $h_{stop}$ and $h_{start}$ curves by progressively increasing the inclination of the chute. In general, however, the deposit thickness may depend on the depth of the flowing layer that generated it, so the most robust way to determine $h_{stop}$ is to measure the deposit thickness from a flow that was moving at the minimum steady-uniform velocity. Finally, some of the pathologies in earlier non-monotonic friction laws are discussed and it is explicitly shown that with these models either steadily travelling deposition waves do not form or they do not leave the correct deposit depth $h_{stop}$.

A new type of wave–mean flow interaction is identified and studied in which a small-amplitude, linear, dispersive modulated wave propagates through an evolving, nonlinear, large-scale fluid state such as an expansion (rarefaction) wave or a dispersive shock wave (undular bore). The Korteweg–de Vries (KdV) equation is considered as a prototypical example of dynamic wavepacket–mean flow interaction. Modulation equations are derived for the coupling between linear wave modulations and a nonlinear mean flow. These equations admit a particular class of solutions that describe the transmission or trapping of a linear wavepacket by an unsteady hydrodynamic state. Two adiabatic invariants of motion are identified that determine the transmission, trapping conditions and show that wavepackets incident upon smooth expansion waves or compressive, rapidly oscillating dispersive shock waves exhibit so-called hydrodynamic reciprocity recently described in Maiden et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 120, 2018, 144101) in the context of hydrodynamic soliton tunnelling. The modulation theory results are in excellent agreement with direct numerical simulations of full KdV dynamics. The integrability of the KdV equation is not invoked so these results can be extended to other nonlinear dispersive fluid mechanic models.

According to the celebrated Bolgiano–Obukhov (Bolgiano, J. Geophys. Res., vol. 64 (12), 1959, pp. 2226–2229; Obukhov, Dokl. Akad. Nauk SSSR, vol. 125, 1959, p. 1246) phenomenology for moderately stably stratified turbulence, the energy spectrum in the inertial range shows a dual scaling: the kinetic energy follows (i) ${\sim}k^{-11/5}$ for $k<k_{B}$, and (ii) ${\sim}k^{-5/3}$ for $k>k_{B}$, where $k_{B}$ is the Bolgiano wavenumber. The $k^{-5/3}$ scaling, akin to passive scalar turbulence, is a direct consequence of the assumption that buoyancy is insignificant for $k>k_{B}$. We revisit this assumption, and using the constancy of kinetic and potential energy fluxes and simple theoretical analysis, we find that the $k^{-5/3}$ spectrum is absent. This is because the velocity field at small scales is too weak to establish a constant kinetic energy flux as in passive scalar turbulence. A quantitative condition for the existence of the second regime is also derived in the paper.
