The cross-slot stagnation point flow is one of the benchmark problems in non-Newtonian fluid mechanics as it allows large strains to develop and can therefore be used for extensional rheometry measurements or, once instability arises, as a mixing device. In such a flow, beyond a critical value for which the ratio of elastic force to viscous force is high enough, elasticity can break symmetry even in the absence of significant inertial forces (i.e. creeping flow), which is an unwanted phenomenon if the device is to be used as a rheometer but beneficial from a mixing perspective. In this work, a passive control mechanism is introduced to the cross-slot by adding a cylinder at the geometric centre to replace the ‘free’ stagnation point with ‘pinned’ stagnation points at the surface of the cylinder. In the current modified geometry, effects of the blockage ratio (the ratio of the diameter of the cylinder to the width of the channel), the Weissenberg number (the ratio of elastic forces to viscous forces) and extensibility parameters ($\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$ and $L^{2}$) are investigated in two-dimensional numerical simulations using both the simplified Phan-Thien and Tanner and finitely extensible nonlinear elastic models. It is shown that the blockage ratio for fixed solvent-to-total-viscosity ratio has a stabilizing effect on the associated symmetry-breaking instability. The resulting data show that the suggested modification, although significantly changing the flow distribution in the region near the stagnation point, does not change the nature of the symmetry-breaking instability or, for low blockage ratio, the critical condition for onset. Using both numerical and physical experiments coupled with a supporting theoretical analysis, we conclude that this instability cannot therefore be solely related to the extensional flow near the stagnation point but it is more likely related to streamline curvature and the high deformation rates towards the corners, i.e. a classic ‘curved streamlines’ purely elastic instability. Our work also suggests that the proposed geometric modification can be an effective approach for enabling higher flow rates to be achieved whilst retaining steady symmetric flow.

We herein report an experimental study to explore the effects of impact inertia, film thickness and viscosity on the dynamics of shape deformation of a drop impacting a liquid film. We have identified that the spreading dynamics shows a weak dependence on impact inertia, but strongly depends on the film thickness. For a thick film, the liquid surface deforms and absorbs part of the impact energy, and hence inhibits spreading of the drop. For a thin film, the drop motion is restricted by the bottom solid substrate, promoting spreading. The periodicity of the capillary controlled shape oscillation, on the other hand, is found to be independent of impact inertia and film thickness. The damping of the shape oscillation shows strong dependence on the film thickness, in that the oscillation decays faster for smaller film thicknesses, due to the enhanced viscous loss.

The governing equations of a surface wave field and a coexisting roll–streak circulation typical of Langmuir circulations or submesoscale frontal circulations are derived to better describe their two-way interactions. The gradients and vertical velocities of the roll–streak circulation induce wave refraction, amplitude modulation and higher-order waves. These changes then produce wave–wave nonlinear forces and divergence of the wave-induced mass transport, both of which in turn affect the circulation. To accurately represent these processes, both a wave theory and a wave-averaged theory are developed without relying on any extrapolation, any spatiotemporal mapping or an approximation that treats the wave-induced mass divergence as being concentrated at the surface. This wave theory finds seven types of current-induced higher-order wave motions. It also determines the wave dynamics such as the governing equation of the wave action density valid in the presence of the complex circulation. The evolution of the wave action density is clearly affected by the upwelling or downwelling. The new wave-averaged theory presents the governing equations of the wave-averaged circulation which satisfies the wave-averaged mass conservation. This circulation is different from the circulation considered to satisfy the mass conservation in the Craik–Leibovich theory, and the difference becomes critical when the wave field evolves due to refraction. In this case, compared to the Craik–Leibovich theory, long waves are more important and also the rolls are more weakly forced.

We create a highly controlled laboratory environment – accessible to both global and local monitoring – to analyse turbulent boiling flows and in particular their shear stress in a statistically stationary state. By precisely monitoring the drag of strongly turbulent Taylor–Couette flow (the flow in between two coaxially rotating cylinders, Reynolds number $Re\approx 10^{6}$) during its transition from non-boiling to boiling, we show that the intuitive expectation, namely that a few volume per cent of vapour bubbles would correspondingly change the global drag by a few per cent, is wrong. Rather, we find that for these conditions a dramatic global drag reduction of up to 45 % occurs. We connect this global result to our local observations, showing that for major drag reduction the vapour bubble deformability is crucial, corresponding to Weber numbers larger than one. We compare our findings with those for turbulent flows with gas bubbles, which obey very different physics from those of vapour bubbles. Nonetheless, we find remarkable similarities and explain these.

In Rayleigh–Bénard convection experiments, the thermal coupling between the sidewall and fluid is unavoidable. As a result, the thermal properties of the sidewall can influence the flow structure that develops. To get a better understanding of the influence of the sidewall, we performed a one-to-one comparison between experiments and direct numerical simulations (DNS) in aspect ratio (diameter over height) $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}=1.00$ samples. We focus on the global heat transport, i.e. the Nusselt number $Nu$, and the local vertical temperature gradients near the horizontal mid-plane on the cylinder axis and close to the sidewall. The data cover the range $10^{5}\lesssim Ra\lesssim 10^{10}$ where $Ra$ is the Rayleigh number. The $Nu$ number obtained from experimental measurements and DNS, in which we use an adiabatic sidewall, agree well. The experiments are performed with several gases, which have widely varying thermal conductivities, but all have a Prandtl number $Pr\approx 0.7$. For $Ra\gtrsim 10^{7}$, both experiments and DNS reveal a stabilizing (positive) temperature gradient at the cylinder axis. This phenomenon was known for high $Pr$, but had not been observed for small $Pr\approx 0.7$ before. The experiments reveal that the temperature gradient decreases with decreasing $Ra$ and eventually becomes destabilizing (negative). The decrease appears at a higher $Ra$ when the sidewall admittance, which measures how easily the heat transfers from the fluid to the wall, is smaller. However, the simulations with an adiabatic sidewall do not reproduce the destabilizing temperature gradient at the cylinder axis in the low $Ra$ number regime. Instead, these simulations show that the temperature gradient increases with decreasing $Ra$. We find that the simulations can reproduce the experimental findings on the temperature gradient at the cylinder axis qualitatively when we consider the physical properties of the sidewall and the thermal shields. However, the temperature gradients obtained from experiments and simulations do not agree quantitatively. The reason is that it is incredibly complicated to reproduce all experimental details accurately due to which it is impossible to reproduce all experimental measurement details. The simulations show, in agreement with the models of Ahlers (Phys. Rev. E, vol. 63 (1), 2000, 015303) and Roche et al. (Eur. Phys. J. B, vol. 24 (3), 2001, pp. 405–408), that the sidewall can act as an extra heat conductor, which absorbs heat from the fluid near the bottom plate and releases it into the fluid near the top plate. The importance of this effect decreases with increasing $Ra$. A crucial finding of the simulations is that the thermal coupling between the sidewall and fluid can strongly influence the flow structure, which can result in significant changes in heat transport. Since this effect goes beyond a simple short circuit of the heat transfer through the sidewall, it is impossible to correct experimental measurements for this effect. Therefore, careful design of experimental set-ups is required to minimize the thermal interaction between the fluid and sidewall.

Recent progress in understanding subcritical transition to turbulence is based on the concept of the edge, the manifold separating the basins of attraction of the laminar and the turbulent state. Originally developed in numerical studies of parallel shear flows with a linearly stable base flow, this concept is adapted here to the case of a spatially developing Blasius boundary layer. Longer time horizons fundamentally change the nature of the problem due to the loss of stability of the base flow due to Tollmien–Schlichting (TS) waves. We demonstrate, using a moving box technique, that efficient long-time tracking of edge trajectories is possible for the parameter range relevant to bypass transition, even if the asymptotic state itself remains out of reach. The flow along the edge trajectory features streak switching observed for the first time in the Blasius boundary layer. At long enough times, TS waves co-exist with the coherent structure characteristic of edge trajectories. In this situation we suggest a reinterpretation of the edge as a manifold dividing the state space between the two main types of boundary layer transition, i.e. bypass transition and classical transition.

Coherence resonance (CR) is a phenomenon in which the response of a stable nonlinear system to external noise exhibits a peak in coherence at an intermediate noise amplitude. We report the first experimental evidence of CR in a hydrodynamic system, a low-density jet capable of undergoing both supercritical and subcritical Hopf bifurcations. By applying noise to the jet in its unconditionally stable regime, we find that, for both types of bifurcation, the coherence factor peaks at an intermediate noise amplitude and increases as the stability boundary is approached. We also find that the autocorrelation function decays differently between the two types of bifurcation, indicating that CR can reveal information about the nonlinearity of a system even before it bifurcates to a limit cycle. We then model the CR dynamics with a stochastically forced van der Pol oscillator calibrated in two different ways: (i) via the conventional method of measuring the amplitude evolution in transient experiments and (ii) via the system-identification method of Lee et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 862, 2019, pp. 200–215) based on the Fokker–Planck equation. We find better experimental agreement with the latter method, demonstrating the deficiency of the former method in identifying the correct form of system nonlinearity. The fact that CR occurs in the unconditionally stable regime, prior to both the Hopf and saddle-node points, implies that it can be used to forecast the onset of global instability. Although demonstrated here on a low-density jet, CR is expected to arise in almost all nonlinear dynamical systems near a Hopf bifurcation, opening up new possibilities for the development of global-instability precursors in a variety of hydrodynamic systems.

Turbulence structure resulting from multi-fluid or multi-species, variable-density isotropic turbulence interaction with a Mach 2 shock is studied using turbulence-resolving shock-capturing simulations and Eulerian (grid) and Lagrangian (particle) methods. The complex roles that density plays in the modification of turbulence by the shock wave are identified. Statistical analyses of the velocity gradient tensor (VGT) show that density variations significantly change the turbulence structure and flow topology. Specifically, a stronger symmetrization of the joint probability density function (PDF) of second and third invariants of the anisotropic VGT, PDF$(Q^{\ast },R^{\ast })$, as well as the PDF of the vortex stretching contribution to the enstrophy equation, are observed in the multi-species case. Furthermore, subsequent to the interaction with the shock, turbulent statistics also acquire a differential distribution in regions having different densities. This results in a nearly symmetric PDF$(Q^{\ast },R^{\ast })$ in heavy-fluid regions, while the light-fluid regions retain the characteristic tear-drop shape. To understand this behaviour and the return to ‘standard’ turbulence structure as the flow evolves away from the shock, Lagrangian dynamics of the VGT and its invariants is studied by considering particle residence times and conditional particle variables in different flow regions. The pressure Hessian contributions to the VGT invariants transport equations are shown to be not only affected by the shock wave, but also by the density in the multi-fluid case, making them critically important to the flow dynamics and turbulence structure.

We investigate the impact and penetration of a solid sphere passing through gelatine at various impact speeds up to $143.2~\text{m}~\text{s}^{-1}$. Tests were performed with several concentrations of gelatine. Impacts for low elastic Froude number $\mathit{Fr}_{e}$, a ratio between inertia and gelatine elasticity, resulted in rebound. Higher $\mathit{Fr}_{e}$ values resulted in penetration, forming cavities with prominent surface textures. The overall shape of the cavities resembles those observed in water-entry experiments, yet they appear in a different order with respect to increasing inertia: rebound, quasi-seal, deep-seal, shallow-seal and surface-seal. Remarkably, similar to the $We$–$Bo$ phase diagram in water-entry experiments, the elastic Froude number $\mathit{Fr}_{e}$ and elastic Grashof number $\mathit{Gr}_{e}$ (a ratio between gravity and gelatine elasticity) classify all five different phenomena into distinguishable regimes. We find that $\mathit{Fr}_{e}$ can be a good indicator to describe the cavity length $H$, particularly in the shallow-seal regime. Finally, the evolution of cavity shape, pinch-off depth, and lower cavity radius are investigated for different $\mathit{Fr}_{e}$ values.

We have investigated the dynamics of a monotrichous bacteria cell near a wall boundary, taking elastic hook flexibility into consideration. Combining theoretical linear stability analysis and direct numerical computations via the boundary element method, we have found that the elastohydrodynamic coupling between the hook elasticity and cell rotational motion enables a stable vertical spinning behaviour like a low-Reynolds-number spinning top. The forwardly rotated flagellum, which generates the force exertion pushing towards the cell body, typically destabilizes the vertical upright position and leads to a boundary-following motion. In contrast, the backward rotation of the flagellum, generating a force pulling the cell body, contributes to stable upright behaviour in a large range of hook rigidity. Further numerical investigations have demonstrated that the non-spherical geometry of the cell body and boundary adhesive interactions affect the bacterial dynamics, leading to complex behaviours such as horizontal spinning and unstable vertical spinning motions, both of which are experimentally observed in Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria. These results highlight the rich diversity of bacterial surface motility emerging from mechanical boundary interactions coupled with the cell swimming and hook flexibility.

Laser-induced forward transfer (LIFT) is a nozzle-free printing technology that can be used for two- and three-dimensional printing. In LIFT, a laser pulse creates an impulse inside a thin film of material that results in the formation of a liquid jet. We experimentally study LIFT of viscoplastic materials by visualizing the process of jetting with high-speed imaging. The shape of the jet depends on the laser energy, focal height, surface tension and material rheology. We theoretically identify the characteristic jetting velocity and how it depends on the control parameters, and define non-dimensional groups to classify the regimes of jetting. Based on the results, we propose the optimal conditions for printing with LIFT technology.

A thorough self-similarity analysis is presented to investigate the properties of self-similarity for the outer layer of compressible turbulent boundary layers. The results are validated using the compressible and quasi-incompressible direct numerical simulation (DNS) data shown and discussed in the first part of this study; see Wenzel et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 880, 2019, pp. 239–283). The analysis is carried out for a general set of characteristic scales, and conditions are derived which have to be fulfilled by these sets in case of self-similarity. To evaluate the main findings derived, four sets of characteristic scales are proposed and tested. These represent compressible extensions of the incompressible edge scaling, friction scaling, Zagarola–Smits scaling and a newly defined Rotta–Clauser scaling. Their scaling success is assessed by checking the collapse of flow-field profiles extracted at various streamwise positions, being normalized by the respective scales. For a good set of scales, most conditions derived in the analysis are fulfilled. As suggested by the data investigated, approximate self-similarity can be achieved for the mean-flow distributions of the velocity, mass flux and total enthalpy and the turbulent terms. Self-similarity thus can be stated to be achievable to a very high degree in the compressible regime. Revealed by the analysis and confirmed by the DNS data, this state is predicted by the compressible pressure-gradient boundary-layer growth parameter $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6EC}_{c}$, which is similar to the incompressible one found by related incompressible studies. Using appropriate adaption, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6EC}_{c}$ values become comparable for compressible and incompressible pressure-gradient cases with similar wall-normal shear-stress distributions. The Rotta–Clauser parameter in its traditional form $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}_{K}=(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}_{K}^{\ast }/\bar{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}}_{w})(\text{d}p_{e}/\text{d}x)$ with the kinematic (incompressible) displacement thickness $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}_{K}^{\ast }$ is shown to be a valid parameter of the form $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6EC}_{c}$ and hence still is a good indicator for equilibrium flow in the compressible regime at the finite Reynolds numbers considered. Furthermore, the analysis reveals that the often neglected derivative of the length scale, $\text{d}L_{0}/\text{d}x$, can be incorporated, which was found to have an important influence on the scaling success of common ‘low-Reynolds-number’ DNS data; this holds for both incompressible and compressible flow. Especially for the scaling of the $\bar{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}}\widetilde{u^{\prime \prime }v^{\prime \prime }}$ stress and thus also the wall shear stress $\bar{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}}_{w}$, the inclusion of $\text{d}L_{0}/\text{d}x$ leads to palpable improvements.

Capillary ripples in thin viscous films are important features of coating and lubrication flows. Here, we present experiments based on digital holographic microscopy, measuring with nanoscale resolution the morphology of capillary ripples ahead of a viscous drop spreading on a prewetted surface. Our experiments reveal that upon increasing the spreading velocity, the amplitude of the ripples first increases and subsequently decreases. Above a critical spreading velocity, the ripples even disappear completely and this transition is accompanied by a divergence of the ripple wavelength. These observations are explained quantitatively using linear wave analysis, beyond the usual lubrication approximation, illustrating that new phenomena arise when the capillary number becomes of the order of unity.

A direct numerical simulation study of self-similar compressible flat-plate turbulent boundary layers (TBLs) with pressure gradients (PGs) has been performed for inflow Mach numbers of 0.5 and 2.0. All cases are computed with smooth PGs for both favourable and adverse PG distributions (FPG, APG) and thus are akin to experiments using a reflected-wave set-up. The equilibrium character allows for a systematic comparison between sub- and supersonic cases, enabling the isolation of pure PG effects from Mach-number effects and thus an investigation of the validity of common compressibility transformations for compressible PG TBLs. It turned out that the kinematic Rotta–Clauser parameter $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}_{K}$ calculated using the incompressible form of the boundary-layer displacement thickness as length scale is the appropriate similarity parameter to compare both sub- and supersonic cases. Whereas the subsonic APG cases show trends known from incompressible flow, the interpretation of the supersonic PG cases is intricate. Both sub- and supersonic regions exist in the boundary layer, which counteract in their spatial evolution. The boundary-layer thickness $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}_{99}$ and the skin-friction coefficient $c_{f}$, for instance, are therefore in a comparable range for all compressible APG cases. The evaluation of local non-dimensionalized total and turbulent shear stresses shows an almost identical behaviour for both sub- and supersonic cases characterized by similar $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}_{K}$, which indicates the (approximate) validity of Morkovin’s scaling/hypothesis also for compressible PG TBLs. Likewise, the local non-dimensionalized distributions of the mean-flow pressure and the pressure fluctuations are virtually invariant to the local Mach number for same $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}_{K}$-cases. In the inner layer, the van Driest transformation collapses compressible mean-flow data of the streamwise velocity component well into their nearly incompressible counterparts with the same $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}_{K}$. However, noticeable differences can be observed in the wake region of the velocity profiles, depending on the strength of the PG. For both sub- and supersonic cases the recovery factor was found to be significantly decreased by APGs and increased by FPGs, but also to remain virtually constant in regions of approximated equilibrium.

Droplet impact on a granular layer results in various morphologies of the liquid–grain mixture. Some are concentrated and highly curved, some are extended and flatter. No matter how the morphology looks from the top, it is generally believed that its bottom is tightly connected to the concavely deformed granular target. In this paper we report the discovery of a hidden cavity below a droplet residual, formed upon impact on packings of hydrophilic grains and exposed by X-ray tomography. Its occurrence in the parameter space is explored. We elucidate the mechanism leading to this counterintuitive phenomenon using a dual-curvature model and an energy criterion. This research may shed new light onto the ongoing discussion about the origin of the so-called fossilized raindrop impressions.

Plane Poiseuille flow, the pressure-driven flow between parallel plates, shows a route to turbulence connected with a linear instability to Tollmien–Schlichting (TS) waves, and another route, the bypass transition, that can be triggered with finite-amplitude perturbation. We use direct numerical simulations to explore the arrangement of the different routes to turbulence among the set of initial conditions. For plates that are a distance $2H$ apart, and in a domain of width $2\unicode[STIX]{x03C0}H$ and length $2\unicode[STIX]{x03C0}H$, the subcritical instability to TS waves sets in at $Re_{c}=5815$ and extends down to $Re_{TS}\approx 4884$. The bypass route becomes available above $Re_{E}=459$ with the appearance of three-dimensional, finite-amplitude travelling waves. Below $Re_{c}$, TS transition appears for a tiny region of initial conditions that grows with increasing Reynolds number. Above $Re_{c}$, the previously stable region becomes unstable via TS waves, but a sharp transition to the bypass route can still be identified. Both routes lead to the same turbulent state in the final stage of the transition, but on different time scales. Similar phenomena can be expected in other flows where two or more routes to turbulence compete.
