In this paper we study the conditional limiting behaviour for the virtual waiting time process for the queue M/D/1. We describe the family of conditional invariant distributions which are continuous and parametrized by the eigenvalues λ ∊ (0, λc], as it happens for diffusions. In this case, there is a periodic dependence of the limiting conditional distributions on the initial point and the minimal conditional invariant distribution is a mixture, according to an exponential law, of the limiting conditional distributions.

A general two-dimensional random walk is considered with a barrier along the y-axis. Absorption probabilities are derived when the barrier is absorbing, and when it is semi-reflecting.

This paper presents a study of the intertemporal propagation of distributional properties of phenotypes in general polygenic multisex inheritance models with sex- and time-dependent heritabilities. It further analyzes the implications of these models under heavy-tailedness of traits' initial distributions. Our results suggest the optimality of a flexible asexual/binary mating system. Switching between asexual and binary inheritance mechanisms allows the population effectively to achieve a fast suppression of negative traits and a fast dispersion of positive traits, regardless of the distributional properties of the phenotypes in the initial period.

Double-stranded DNA molecules can be damaged by enzymic action or radiation, in a manner which creates randomly-located single-stranded breaks (nicks). The accumulation of these leads eventually to the double-stranded breakage of the molecule, because two opposite-strand nicks within a critical distance of each other establish conditions for breakage. We study the random variable N, defined as the number of nicks needed for double-stranded breakage to occur. We develop an asymptotic theory which is needed for practical computations.

In this paper we investigate the limiting behavior of the failure rate for the convolution of two or more life distributions. In a previous paper on mixtures, Block, Mi and Savits (1993) showed that the failure rate behaves like the limiting behavior of the strongest component. We show a similar result here for convolutions. We also show by example that unlike a mixture population, the ultimate direction of monotonicity does not necessarily follow that of the strongest component.

The stochastic version of the simple epidemic is considered in this paper. A method which has computational advantages is developed for computing the probability distribution of the process. The method is based on the Jordan canonical form of the matrix representing the system of differential-difference equations for the simple epidemic. It is also shown that the method can be applied to the general epidemic as well as any other right-shift process.

We define a class of anticipative flows on Poisson space and compute its Radon-Nikodym derivative. This result is applied to statistical testing in an anticipative queueing problem.

We consider non-homogeneous Markov chains generated by the simulated annealing algorithm. We classify states according to asymptotic properties of trajectories. We identify recurrent and transient states. The set of recurrent states is partitioned into disjoint classes of asymptotically communicating states. These classes correspond to atoms of the tail sigma-field. The results are valid under the weak reversibility assumption of Hajek.

A sampling system, MIL-STD-105D, used in quality control consists of three sampling plans with different acceptance probabilities used in turn for lot inspection. The decision to switch plan is based on the history of the lot acceptance records and a set of stopping rules. We derive the performance measure, average outgoing quality (AOQ), of this sampling system from a renewal process in which AOQ is expressed in terms of the moments of the stopping times. The renewal approach is simpler than that of the Markov chain generally used in computing AOQ for an infinite sequence of lots; it also provides a formula for AOQ for a finite sequence of lots.

This paper addresses random packing of equal-sized disks in a manner such that no disk has a gap on its circumference large enough to accommodate an extra touching neighbour. This structure generalises the deterministic packing models discussed in classical geometry (Coxeter (1961), Hilbert and Cohn-Vossen (1952)). Relationships with the dual mosaic formed by joining the centres of touching disks are established. Constraints on the neighbourhood of disks and on the packing density are established.

Let {Zt, t ≧ 0} be an irreducible regular semi-Markov process with transition probabilities Pij (t). Let f(t) be non-negative and non-decreasing to infinity, and let λ ≧ 0. This paper identifies a large set of functions f(t) with the solidarity property that convergence of the integral ≧ eλtf(t)Pij(t) dt for a specific pair of states i and j implies convergence of the integral for all pairs of states. Similar results are derived for the Markov renewal functions Mij (t). Among others it is shown that f(t) can be taken regularly varying.

We present a very short derivation of the integral representation of the two-sided Skorokhod reflection Z of a continuous function X of bounded variation, which is a generalization of the integral representation of the one-sided map featured in Anantharam and Konstantopoulos (2011) and Konstantopoulos et al. (1996). We also show that Z satisfies a simpler integral representation when additional conditions are imposed on X.

Log-concavity of a joint survival function is proposed as a model for bivariate increasing failure rate (BIFR) distributions. Its connections with or distinctness from other notions of BIFR are discussed. A necessary and sufficient condition for a bivariate survival function to be log-concave (BIFR-LCC) is given that elucidates the impact of dependence between lifetimes on ageing. Illustrative examples are provided to explain BIFR-LCC for both positive and negative dependence.

A recent paper in Advances in Applied Probability (Siegel (1976)) considered the duration of the time Tmn for a linear birth and death process to grow from a (large) initial size m to a larger size n. The main aim was to show that, when the birth rate exceeds the death rate, Tmn is close to its mean value, log n/m, with high probability. This paper establishes this result using much simpler techniques.

Let f be the density function associated to a matrix-exponential distribution of parameters $(\boldsymbol{\alpha}, T,\boldsymbol{{s}})$ . By exponentially tilting f, we find a probabilistic interpretation which generalizes the one associated to phase-type distributions. More specifically, we show that for any sufficiently large $\lambda\ge 0$ , the function $x\mapsto \left(\int_0^\infty e^{-\lambda s}f(s)\textrm{d} s\right)^{-1}e^{-\lambda x}f(x)$ can be described in terms of a finite-state Markov jump process whose generator is tied to T. Finally, we show how to revert the exponential tilting in order to assign a probabilistic interpretation to f itself.

We consider solutions of Lévy-driven stochastic differential equations of the form $\textrm{d} X_t=\sigma(X_{t-})\textrm{d} L_t$, $X_0=x$, where the function $\sigma$ is twice continuously differentiable and the driving Lévy process $L=(L_t)_{t\geq0}$ is either vector or matrix valued. While the almost sure short-time behavior of Lévy processes is well known and can be characterized in terms of the characteristic triplet, there is no complete characterization of the behavior of the solution X. Using methods from stochastic calculus, we derive limiting results for stochastic integrals of the form $t^{-p}\int_{0+}^t\sigma(X_{t-})\,\textrm{d} L_t$ to show that the behavior of the quantity $t^{-p}(X_t-X_0)$ for $t\downarrow0$ almost surely reflects the behavior of $t^{-p}L_t$. Generalizing $t^{{\kern1pt}p}$ to a suitable function $f\colon[0,\infty)\rightarrow\mathbb{R}$ then yields a tool to derive explicit law of the iterated logarithm type results for the solution from the behavior of the driving Lévy process.

We consider parallel single-server queues in heavy traffic with randomly split Hawkes arrival processes. The service times are assumed to be independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) in each queue and are independent in different queues. In the critically loaded regime at each queue, it is shown that the diffusion-scaled queueing and workload processes converge to a multidimensional reflected Brownian motion in the non-negative orthant with orthonormal reflections. For the model with abandonment, we also show that the corresponding limit is a multidimensional reflected Ornstein–Uhlenbeck diffusion in the non-negative orthant.

A linear list is a collection of items that can be accessed sequentially. The cost of a request is the number of items that need to be examined before the desired item is located, i.e. the distance of the requested item from the beginning of the list. The transposition rule is one of the algorithms designed to reduce the search cost by organizing the list. In particular, upon a request for a given item, the item is transposed with the preceding one. We develop a new approach for analyzing the algorithm, based on a coupling to a certain constrained asymmetric exclusion process. This allows us to establish an asymptotic optimality of the rule for two families of request distributions.
