We derive closed-form solutions to some discounted optimal stopping problems related to the perpetual American cancellable dividend-paying put and call option pricing problems in an extension of the Black–Merton–Scholes model. The cancellation times are assumed to occur when the underlying risky asset price process hits some unobservable random thresholds. The optimal stopping times are shown to be the first times at which the asset price reaches stochastic boundaries depending on the current values of its running maximum and minimum processes. The proof is based on the reduction of the original optimal stopping problems to the associated free-boundary problems and the solution of the latter problems by means of the smooth-fit and modified normal-reflection conditions. We show that the optimal stopping boundaries are characterised as the maximal and minimal solutions of certain first-order nonlinear ordinary differential equations.

We present a stand-alone simple proof of a probabilistic interpretation of the Gaussian binomial coefficients by conditioning a random walk to hit a given lattice point at a given time.

A method is provided for numerical evaluation, with any given accuracy, of the probability that at least p% of the genetic material from an individual's chromosomal segment survives to the next generation. Relevant MAPLE® V codes, for automated implementation of such evaluation, are also provided. The genomic continuum model, with Haldane's model for the crossover process, is assumed.

It is well known that a simple closed-form formula exists for the stationary distribution of the workload in M/GI/1 queues. In this paper, we extend this to the general stationary framework. Namely, we consider a work-conserving single-server queueing system, where the sequence of customers’ arrival epochs and their service times is described as a general stationary marked point process, and we derive a closed-form formula for the stationary workload distribution. The key to our proof is two-fold: one is the Palm-martingale calculus, that is, the connection between the notion of Palm probability and that of stochastic intensity. The other is the preemptive-resume last-come, first-served discipline.

We consider I fluid queues in parallel. Each fluid queue has a deterministic inflow with a constant rate. At a random instant subject to a Poisson process, random amounts of fluids are simultaneously reduced. The requested amounts for the reduction are subject to a general I-dimensional distribution. The queues with inventories that are smaller than the requests are emptied. Stochastic upper bounds are considered for the stationary distribution of the joint buffer contents. Our major interest is in finding exponential product-form bounds, which turn out to have the appropriate decay rates with respect to certain linear combinations of buffer contents.

This paper builds a mixture representation of the reliability function of the conditional residual lifetime of a coherent system in terms of the reliability functions of conditional residual lifetimes of order statistics. Some stochastic ordering properties for the conditional residual lifetime of a coherent system with independent and identically distributed components are obtained, based on the stochastically ordered coefficient vectors.

We analyse features of the patterns formed from a simple model for a martensitic phase transition that fragments the unit square into rectangles. This is a fragmentation model that can be encoded by a general branching random walk. An important quantity is the distribution of the lengths of the interfaces in the pattern, and we establish limit theorems for some of the asymptotics of the interface profile. In particular, we are able to use a general branching process to show almost sure power law decay of the number of interfaces of at least a certain size and a general branching random walk to examine the numbers of rectangles of a certain aspect ratio. In doing so we extend a theorem on the growth of the general branching random walk as well as developing results on the tail behaviour of the limiting random variable in our general branching process.

A random vibration model is investigated in this paper. The model is formulated as a cosine function with a constant frequency and a random walk phase. We show that this model is second-order stationary and can be rewritten as a vector-valued AR(1) model as well as a scalar ARMA(2, 1) model. The linear innovation sequence of the AR(1) model is shown to be a martingale difference sequence while the linear innovation sequence of the ARMA(2, 1) model is only an uncorrelated sequence. A non-linear predictor is derived from the AR(1) model while a linear predictor is derived from the ARMA(2, 1) model. We deduce that the non-linear predictor of this model has less mean square error than that of the linear predictor. This has significance, for example, for predicting seasonal phenomena with this model. In addition, the limit distributions of the sample mean, the finite Fourier transforms and the autocovariance functions are derived using a martingale approach. The limit distribution of autocovariance functions differs from the classical result given by Bartlett's formula.

This note is motivated by Blom's work in 1989. We consider a generalized Ehrenfest urn model in which a randomly-chosen ball has a positive probability of moving from one urn to the other urn. We use recursion relations between the mean transition times to derive formulas in terms of finite sums, which are shown to be equivalent to the definite integrals obtained by Blom.

This work presents an estimate of the error on a cumulative reward function until the entrance time of a continuous-time Markov chain into a set, when the infinitesimal generator of this chain is perturbed. The derivation of an error bound constitutes the first part of the paper while the second part deals with an application where the time until saturation is considered for a circuit switched network which starts from an empty state and which is also subject to possible failures.

In this paper we study a special class of size dependent branching processes. We assume that for some positive integer K as long as the population size does not exceed level K, the process evolves as a discrete-time supercritical branching process, and when the population size exceeds level K, it evolves as a subcritical or critical branching process. It is shown that this process does die out in finite time T. The question of when the mean value E(T) is finite or infinite is also addressed.

In a previous paper, the author has described a method for obtaining envelope processes for oscillatory stochastic processes. These are processes which can be represented as the output of a time-varying linear filter whose input is a stationary process.

It is shown in this paper that the proposed definition of the envelope process may not be unique, but may depend on the particular representation of the oscillatory process chosen.

It is then shown that for a class of oscillatory processes which is of particular interest, the class of transient processes, there is a class of natural representations which all lead to a unique envelope process.

In this paper we study players' long-run behaviors in evolutionary coordination games with imperfect monitoring. In each time period, signals corresponding to players' underlying actions, instead of the actions themselves, are observed. A boundedly rational quasi-Bayesian learning process is proposed to extract information from the realized signals. We find that players' long-run behaviors depend not only on the correlations between actions and signals, but on the initial probabilities of risk-dominant and non-risk-dominant equilibria being chosen. The conditions under which risk-dominant equilibrium, non-risk-dominant equilibrium, and the coexistence of both equilibria emerges in the long run are shown. In some situations, the number of limiting distributions grows unboundedly as the population size grows to infinity.

Cars entering and leaving a parking place in a forest are registered automatically in connection with an investigation of forest recreational use. By subtraction the number of cars parked is computed. Due to erroneous and missing counts, errors occur and may for instance indicate a negative number. The theory of incompletely observed Markov chains is used to obtain an estimate of the number of cars parked.

For some three-dimensional random walks on the cubic lattice, the probability of the walk returning to its starting point is given numerically.

The two-dimensional periodogram has been proposed as an estimator of the spectral density of a real, homogeneous, random field defined over a regular lattice on the plane. In the present paper, results pertaining to the asymptotic distributional properties of such a periodogram are obtained. These results generalize some of the work of Hannan (1960), Walker (1965) and more directly Olshen (1967a,b) concerning asymptotic theory for the periodogram of a stationary time series. Although extension of asymptotic theory for one-dimensional periodograms to a parallel theory for two-dimensional periodograms is not completely straightforward (one runs into problems akin to the problems encountered in extending the theory of one-dimensional trigonometric series to two dimensions), further extensions to asymptotic theory for p-dimensional periodograms (p > 2) is easily accomplished by an obvious mimicry of the definitions, theorems and proofs for the two-dimensional case. Since the notation required for the p-dimensional case is rather cumbersome, we have chosen to give results only for two-dimensional periodograms.

For normal populations an approximation is given for PK;N based on a Taylor series expansion in the θ 's. If F(x) has an increasing failure rate, as is the case for the normal, an upper bound can be given for the ‘win' probability P1;N Some moment relations for normal order statistics are also given.

Suppose that {Xs, 0 ≤ s ≤ T} is an m-dimensional geometric Brownian motion with drift, μ is a bounded positive Borel measure on [0,T], and ϕ : ℝm → [0,∞) is a (weighted) lq(ℝm)-norm, 1 ≤ q ≤ ∞. The purpose of this paper is to study the distribution and the moments of the random variable Y given by the Lp(μ)-norm, 1 ≤ p ≤ ∞, of the function s ↦ ϕ(Xs), 0 ≤ s ≤ T. By using various geometric inequalities in Wiener space, this paper gives upper and lower bounds for the distribution function of Y and proves that the distribution function is log-concave and absolutely continuous on every open subset of the distribution's support. Moreover, the paper derives tail probabilities, presents sharp moment inequalities, and shows that Y is indetermined by its moments. The paper will also discuss the so-called moment-matching method for the pricing of Asian-styled basket options.
