The productivity of climax and serai grassland in South Africa was compared at three stocking rates with steers. On climax grassland, over nine years, gains per head at one steer per morgen (= 2·12 acres = 0·86 hectare) were not significantly greater than at two steers per morgen. Liveweight gains per morgen were 70 per cent higher at the heavier stocking rate and were 162 lb and 273 lb at one and two steers respectively. On serai grassland, over three seasons stocked at two steers and three steers per morgen, the liveweight gains per steer were significantly less at the higher stocking rate but there was no significant difference in the gains per morgen, which were 366 lb and 318 lb at two and three steers respectively. The liveweight gains on the seral grassland were significantly higher than on the climax grassland at the same stocking rate Calculation of the total digestible nutrients (T.D.N.) has shown that with heavier stocking more T.D.N. per morgen may be harvested on both grassland types. However, with heavy grazing the efficiency of conversion of T.D.N. into liveweight was less. The quality of the sward, measured in per cent crude protein, P2O5 and crude fibre was better at the heavier stocking owing to delayed maturity of the grass when it is continually grazed short.

Four sesame varieties were tested at three plant populations to study varietal and population effects on some attributes of vegetative growth. Significant differences between varieties were detected and planting density was found to modify both areas and dry weights of leaves.

The time and method of placement, and the distance from the plant at which fertilizers should be placed, was studied on sole-crop cowpeas. The development and yield of both early and late season crops were highest where fertilizers were applied at planting. It is suggested that it might be more advantageous to plough the fertilizers under before planting, so that the nutrients will become available to the seedlings from the time they emerge. Application of fertilizer in two bands gave the highest yields, but was not significantly superior to a less laborious method of application in one band. The distance at which the fertilizer was placed, and treatment interactions, did not show any definite trends.

Five fire-cured tobacco varieties were grown under different fertilizer levels and environments, to investigate their effects upon quality of the cured leaf. Environment exerted the greatest effect, and the best quality of leaf was produced from virgin soils. Fertilizer responses were greatest in environments where traditional agricultural methods operated, but even heavy applications of fertilizer under these conditions did not compensate for lack of good initial soil conditions. Although variety affected the style of tobacco produced, varietal differences were small compared with the effects of environment and fertilizer.

The yield potential of a highly productive non-commercial Type IV bean cultivar was determined under optimum field conditions, grown in monoculture at 1 plant/m2 on trellises 3 m high. Canopy growth was analysed by dividing the stand into 25 cm horizontal strata. The main components of yield were number of inflorescences and number of pods per stratum. Daily yield for the growing period was 4.9 g dry weight/m2. Although a high yield per plant was recorded (823 g/plant) drop of young pods and seed abortion were the major factors reducing the potential yield.

Phosphorus (P) is a limiting resource for agricultural production in the tropics. Urochloa spp. is commonly used as a cover crop and has mechanisms to mobilize partially the nonavailable P forms from the soil. The use of Urochloa intercropped with Arabica coffee (Coffea arabica L.) is increasing in Brazil, but P cycling has been overlooked in this system. Here, we proposed two experiments to test the hypothesis that Urochloa decumbens could mobilize and absorb P from deep soil layers and increase overall P cycling of the intercrop system. We measured U. decumbens root and shoot dry mass (SDM), root morphology and activity, nutrient uptake, soil nutrient availability, and soil P fractionation in both experiments. To better understand P cycling by Urochloa alone, in the first experiment, U. decumbens was cultivated in rhizotrons where adequate P was supplied in distinct soil layers – 0.0 to 0.3 m, 0.3 to 0.8 m, 0.8 to 1.3 m, and 1.3 to 2 m. Root dry mass (RDM) and morphology were not affected by P availability. Moreover, total biomass production (root plus shoot) and P uptake were higher when P was available in the superficial top soil layer compared to P availability in more than one layer or only in the bottom layer. Nevertheless, U. decumbens was able to reach and acquire P from depth. Correlation analysis showed that P cycling was strongly dependent on SDM, labile, and moderately labile fractions of soil P and was not significantly correlated with RDM. The second experiment aimed at verifying P uptake and mobilization from different soil depths in field conditions. P was supplied in different depths of the soil profile – 0.3 m, 0.6 m, and 0.9 m – in the field with preestablished U. decumbens intercropped with Arabica coffee plants. Shoot P content was higher at the first sample date when P was supplied at 0.3 m, compared to 0.6 m, 0.9 m, and control with no P. Soil P fractionation showed that there was no P mobilization of less labile forms by U. decumbens during the evaluated time. Our results showed that P fertilization in the top layer rather than suppling P trough the soil profile can maximize U. decumbens growth. Also, Urochloa P accumulation was enough to support coffee demand even in high yields and can be an alternative to increase P use efficiency in coffee production systems, being an effective recycler of P.

Confidence limits of expected twenty-day rainfall have been computed for two widely separated maize-producing regions in Kenya. The 35-km. square survey areas were quite different topographically, and limits were derived for seven rainfall sites in each. Ratios of these limits to the corresponding long-term mean precipitations were evaluated for each site for each twenty-day period during the appropriate maize-growing seasons. For a particular period and confidence level, these ratios were almost constant for either group of seven sites. The variability computed for a single, well-chosen site is therefore representative of quite a large neighbourhood. Expected rainfall totals were also derived for a ‘fictitious’ site, simulating the average precipitation over the whole of the flatter of the two areas. The resulting limits were less extreme than those of any individual site, indicating that areal rainfall, as used in hydrology, is less variable than the agriculturally-important point rainfall.

Young tea plants were grown for eight months in large polythene bags of soil, with provision to prevent rain from running into the soil. After a preliminary period of establishment, in which all plants were kept well-watered, four soil moisture regimes were applied ranging from watering twice weekly to withholding irrigation until plants had been subjected to a soil moisture tension of 15 bar, as determined by gypsum resistance units, for a period of one week before rewatering. Plant survival and growth were significantly better under the wettest compared with the driest regime.

Mechanized crop production schemes continue to be the main source of grain sorghum in the Sudan, where fertilizer experiments have shown that applications of NP and NPK significantly increase the grain yield of continuous sorghum, though economic increases could be obtained by the application of nitrogen.

Water deficiency is one of the most severe abiotic stresses in rainfed dry lands and limits crop productivity. Exogenous applications of salicylic acid (SA) have been applied to mitigate the adverse effects of water-deficit stresses, but the relative efficacy of different derivatives of SA in enhancing water-deficit tolerance along with the underlying physio-biochemical mechanism and yield of crops is not well documented. Field experiments were conducted to ascertain the relative efficacy of exogenous application of three plant bioregulators (PBRs) [SA, thiosalicylic acid and 5-sulfosalicylic acid (SSA)], each at three concentrations (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 mM), on the growth, physio-biochemical characteristics and yield of cluster bean under rainfed conditions. Based on a 2-year field experiment, the application of PBRs enhanced yield (from 8 to 16%). The yield enhancement with the application of PBRs was associated with elevated water content (from 9 to 17%), membrane stability (from 12 to 18%) and antioxidant enzyme activity (from 12 to 33%) and reduced lipid peroxidation (from −15 to −34%) in leaves. The effects of PBRs were conditionally type and concentration dependent. The application of SSA at a rate of 1 mM was more effective in enhancing water-deficit tolerance and improving the yield of cluster bean under water shortage conditions. This study provides empirical evidence of the potential for the application of SA and its derivatives to enhance crop yields under drought conditions. The results have direct implications for sustainable crop production for similar regions of the world facing water deficits.

The objective of this study was to compare historical experimental and commercial yield data for sugarcane in order to determine the general level of disparity and assess the possibility of deriving a correction factor to adjust trial yields to realistic commercial levels. Over the 29-year comparison period, trial yields (fresh stalk weight) of sugarcane were significantly higher (p < 0.001) than commercial yields by approximately 30 t ha−1. Trial and commercial yield data were used to derive a correction factor of 0.7, which can be used to successfully correct trial yields to equivalent commercial levels at both the national and regional level; however, at the local (mill supply area) level different correction factors were derived. The degree of correlation between experimental and commercial yields was found to be greater in areas of higher yield potential, and it was also established that off-station trials were more representative of the commercial potential than on-station trials. The correction factor of 0.7 can therefore be used as a tool to adjust experimental sugarcane yields to indicate likely commercial levels, thereby improving the confidence of growers in taking up recommendations for the adoption of new varieties derived from trial yields.

A NPK factorial experiment was conducted during two successive cropping seasons to study direct and residual effects of various treatments on the flower initiation and yield of soybeans. Plants were slower to reach the maximum flowering stage in the year of fertilizer application than in the following year. During the first year potassium in association with phosphorus delayed the flower forming process, whereas potassium alone hastened flowering in the second year unless associated with a high dosage of nitrogen. All the treatments gave far greater yields in the first season, suggesting that fertilizers should be applied during every cropping season. Nitrogen and phosphorus at 20 pounds of N2 and P2O5, per acre gave the biggest yields, but potassium failed to show any response. The residual responses to potassium and phosphorus during the second year were significant but not to nitrogen.
