We investigate in this paper the dependence relation between the space–time periodic coefficients A, q and μ of the reaction–diffusion equation and the spreading speed of the solutions of the Cauchy problem associated with compactly supported initial data. We prove in particular that (1) taking the spatial or temporal average of μ decreases the minimal speed, (2) if μ is not constant with respect to x, then increasing the amplitude of the diffusion matrix A does not necessarily increase the minimal speed and (3) if A = IN, μ is a constant, then the introduction of a space periodic drift term q = ∇Q decreases the minimal speed. In order to prove these results, we use a variational characterisation of the spreading speed that involves a family of periodic principal eigenvalues associated with the linearisation of the equation near zero. We are thus back to the investigation of the dependence relation between this family of eigenvalues and the coefficients.

The often-studied problem known as Kramers' problem, in the general area of rarefied-gas dynamics, is investigated in terms of a linearized, variable collision frequency model of the Boltzmann equation. A convenient change of variables is used to reduce the general case considered to a canonical form that is well suited for analysis by analytical and/or numerical methods. While the general formulation developed is valid for an unspecified collision frequency, a recently developed version of the discrete-ordinates method is used to compute the viscous-slip coefficient and the velocity defect in the Knudsen layer for three specific cases: the classical BGK model, the Williams model (the collision frequency is proportional to the magnitude of the velocity) and the rigid-sphere model.

We present the numerical solution of two-point boundary value problems for a third-order linear PDE, representing a linear evolution in one space dimension. To our knowledge, the numerical evaluation of the solution so far could only be obtained by a time-stepping scheme, that must also take into account the issue, generically non-trivial, of the imposition of the boundary conditions. Instead of computing the evolution numerically, we evaluate the novel solution representation formula obtained by the unified transform, also known as Fokas transform. This representation involves complex line integrals, but in order to evaluate these integrals numerically, it is necessary to deform the integration contours using appropriate deformation mappings. We formulate a strategy to implement effectively this deformation, which allows us to obtain accurate numerical results.

We study the extended Stefan problem which includes constitutional supercooling for the solidification of a binary alloy in a finite spherical domain. We perform an asymptotic analysis in the limits of large Lewis number and small Stefan number which allows us to identify a number of spatio-temporal regimes signifying distinct behaviours in the solidification process, resulting in an intricate boundary layer structure. Our results generalise those present in the literature by considering all time regimes for the Stefan problem while also accounting for impurities and constitutional supercooling. These results also generalise recent work on the extended Stefan problem for finite planar domains to spherical domains, and we shall highlight key differences in the asymptotic solutions and the underlying boundary layer structure which result from this change in geometry. We compare our asymptotic solutions with both numerical simulations and real experimental data arising from the casting of molten metallurgical grade silicon through the water granulation process, with our analysis highlighting the role played by supercooling in the solidification of binary alloys appearing in such applications.

This paper presents the current state of mathematical modelling of the electrochemical behaviour of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) as they are charged and discharged. It reviews the models developed by Newman and co-workers, both in the cases of dilute and moderately concentrated electrolytes and indicates the modelling assumptions required for their development. Particular attention is paid to the interface conditions imposed between the electrolyte and the active electrode material; necessary conditions are derived for one of these, the Butler–Volmer relation, in order to ensure physically realistic solutions. Insight into the origin of the differences between various models found in the literature is revealed by considering formulations obtained by using different measures of the electric potential. Materials commonly used for electrodes in LIBs are considered and the various mathematical models used to describe lithium transport in them discussed. The problem of upscaling from models of behaviour at the single electrode particle scale to the cell scale is addressed using homogenisation techniques resulting in the pseudo-2D model commonly used to describe charge transport and discharge behaviour in lithium-ion cells. Numerical solution to this model is discussed and illustrative results for a common device are computed.

We consider the initial value problem for the equation ut = uxx + H(u), where H is the Heaviside graph, on a bounded interval with Dirichlet boundary conditions, and discuss existence, regularity and uniqueness of solutions and interfaces.

Mathematical models for the growth of nutrient-rich tissue are presented and a number of properties of the resulting models outlined. The focus is on obtaining broadly applicable results for the simplest appropriate formulations by using matched-asymptotic, moving-boundary and thin-film approaches; the relevance of the results to a variety of specific biological applications will be addressed elsewhere, as will the inclusion of additional physical phenomena.

We use the heat equation as an illustrative example to show that the unified method introduced by one of the authors can be employed for constructing analytical solutions for linear evolution partial differential equations in one spatial dimension involving non-separable boundary conditions as well as non-local constraints. Furthermore, we show that for the particular case in which the boundary conditions become separable, the unified method provides an easier way for constructing the relevant classical spectral representations avoiding the classical spectral analysis approach. We note that the unified method always yields integral expressions which, in contrast to the series or integral expressions obtained by the standard transform methods, are uniformly convergent at the boundary. Thus, even for the cases that the standard transform methods can be implemented, the unified method provides alternative solution expressions which have advantages for both numerical and asymptotic considerations. The former advantage is illustrated by providing the numerical evaluation of typical boundary value problems.

In this paper, we analytically investigate multi-component Cahn–Hilliard and Allen–Cahn systems which are coupled with elasticity and uni-directional damage processes. The free energy of the system is of the form ∫Ω½Γ∇c : ∇c + ½|∇z|2+Wch(c)+Wel(e,c,z)dx with a polynomial or logarithmic chemical energy density Wch, an inhomogeneous elastic energy density Wel and a quadratic structure of the gradient of damage variable z. For the corresponding elastic Cahn–Hilliard and Allen–Cahn systems coupled with uni-directional damage processes, we present an appropriate notion of weak solutions and prove existence results based on certain regularization methods and a higher integrability result for strain e.

Recent attention has focused on deriving localised pulse solutions to various systems of reaction–diffusion equations. In this paper, we consider the evolution of localised pulses in the Brusselator activator–inhibitor model, long considered a paradigm for the study of non-linear equations, in a finite one-dimensional domain with feed of the inhibitor through the boundary and global feed of the activator. We employ the method of matched asymptotic expansions in the limit of small activator diffusivity and small activator and inhibitor feeds. The disparity of diffusion lengths between the activator and inhibitor leads to pulse-type solutions in which the activator is localised while the inhibitor varies on an O(1) length scale. In the asymptotic limit considered, the pulses become spikes described by Dirac delta functions and evolve slowly in time until equilibrium is reached. Such quasi-equilibrium solutions with N activator pulses are constructed and a differential-algebraic system of equations (DAE) is derived, characterising the slow evolution of the locations and the amplitudes of the pulses. We find excellent agreement for the pulse evolution between the asymptotic theory and the results of numerical computations. An algebraic system for the equilibrium pulse amplitudes and locations is derived from the equilibrium points of the DAE system. Both symmetric equilibria, corresponding to a common pulse amplitude, and asymmetric pulse equilibria, for which the pulse amplitudes are different, are constructed. We find that for a positive boundary feed rate, pulse spacing of symmetric equilibria is no longer uniform, and that for sufficiently large boundary flux, pulses at the edges of the pattern may collide with and remain fixed at the boundary. Lastly, stability of the equilibrium solutions is analysed through linearisation of the DAE, which, in contrast to previous approaches, provides a quick way to calculate the small eigenvalues governing weak translation-type instabilities of equilibrium pulse patterns.

In a one-dimensional domain, the stability of localized spike patterns is analysed for two closely related singularly perturbed reaction–diffusion (RD) systems with Brusselator kinetics. For the first system, where there is no influx of the inhibitor on the domain boundary, asymptotic analysis is used to derive a non-local eigenvalue problem (NLEP), whose spectrum determines the linear stability of a multi-spike steady-state solution. Similar to previous NLEP stability analyses of spike patterns for other RD systems, such as the Gierer–Meinhardt and Gray–Scott models, a multi-spike steady-state solution can become unstable to either a competition or an oscillatory instability depending on the parameter regime. An explicit result for the threshold value for the initiation of a competition instability, which triggers the annihilation of spikes in a multi-spike pattern, is derived. Alternatively, in the parameter regime when a Hopf bifurcation occurs, it is shown from a numerical study of the NLEP that an asynchronous, rather than synchronous, oscillatory instability of the spike amplitudes can be the dominant instability. The existence of robust asynchronous temporal oscillations of the spike amplitudes has not been predicted from NLEP stability studies of other RD systems. For the second system, where there is an influx of inhibitor from the domain boundaries, an NLEP stability analysis of a quasi-steady-state two-spike pattern reveals the possibility of dynamic bifurcations leading to either a competition or an oscillatory instability of the spike amplitudes depending on the parameter regime. It is shown that the novel asynchronous oscillatory instability mode can again be the dominant instability. For both Brusselator systems, the detailed stability results from NLEP theory are confirmed by rather extensive numerical computations of the full partial differential equations system.

We present a mathematical model describing the distribution of monomer and micellar surfactant in a steady straining flow beneath a fixed free surface. The model includes adsorption of monomer surfactant at the surface and a single-step reaction whereby $n$ monomer molecules combine to form each micelle. The equations are analysed asymptotically and numerically and the results are compared with experiments. Previous studies of such systems have often assumed equilibrium between the monomer and micellar phases, i.e. that the reaction rate is effectively infinite. Our analysis shows that such an approach inevitably fails under certain physical conditions and also cannot accurately match some experimental results. Our theory provides an improved fit with experiments and allows the reaction rates to be estimated.

We consider the minimizers of the Gibbs free energy which couples a complex Ginzburg–Landau order parameter with a magnetic potential. It is established that the set on which the complex order parameter equals zero consists only of isolated points. Some estimates concerning the set on which the absolute value of the order parameter is small are also given. Numerical simulations are presented for the problem without a magnetic potential.

Some nonlinear eigenvalue problems related to the modelling of the steady-state deflection of an elastic membrane associated with a Micro-Electromechanical System capacitor under a constant applied voltage are analysed using formal asymptotic methods. These problems consist of certain singular perturbations of the basic membrane nonlinear eigenvalue problem Δu = λ/(1 + u)2 in Ω with u = 0 on ∂Ω, where Ω is the unit ball in 2. It is well known that the radially symmetric solution branch to this basic membrane problem has an infinite fold-point structure with λ → 4/9 as ϵ ≡ 1 − ||u||∞ → 0+. One focus of this paper is to develop a novel singular perturbation method to analytically determine the limiting asymptotic behaviour of this infinite fold-point structure in terms of two constants that must be computed numerically. This theory is then extended to certain generalisations of the basic membrane problem in the N-dimensional unit ball. The second main focus of this paper is to analyse the effect of two distinct perturbations of the basic membrane problem in the unit disk resulting from either a bending energy term of the form −δΔ2u to the operator, or inserting a concentric inner undeflected disk of radius δ. For each of these perturbed problems, it is numerically shown that the infinite fold-point structure for the basic membrane problem is destroyed when δ > 0, and that there is a maximal solution branch for which λ → 0 as ϵ ≡ 1 − ||u||∞ → 0+. For δ > 0, a novel singular perturbation analysis is used in the limit ϵ → 0+ to construct the limiting asymptotic behaviour of the maximal solution branch for the biharmonic problem in the unit slab and the unit disk, and for the annulus problem in the unit disk. The asymptotic results for the bifurcation curves are shown to compare very favourably with full numerical results.

We consider a Josephson junction system installed with a finite length inhomogeneity, either of micro-resistor or micro-resonator type. The system can be modelled by a sine-Gordon equation with a piecewise-constant function to represent the varying Josephson tunneling critical current. The existence of pinned fluxons depends on the length of the inhomogeneity, the variation in the Josephson tunneling critical current and the applied bias current. We establish that a system may either not be able to sustain a pinned fluxon, or – for instance by varying the length of the inhomogeneity – may exhibit various different types of pinned fluxons. Our stability analysis shows that changes of stability can only occur at critical points of the length of the inhomogeneity as a function of the (Hamiltonian) energy density inside the inhomogeneity – a relation we determine explicitly. In combination with continuation arguments and Sturm–Liouville theory, we determine the stability of all constructed pinned fluxons. It follows that if a given system is able to sustain at least one pinned fluxon, a microresistor has exactly one pinned fluxon, i.e. the system selects one unique pinned stable pinned configuration, and a microresonator has at least one stable pinned configuration. Moreover, it is shown that both for micro-resistors and micro-resonators this stable pinned configuration may be non-monotonic – something which is not possible in the homogeneous case. Finally, it is shown that results in the literature on localised inhomogeneities can be recovered as limits of our results on micro-resonators.

On a sufficiently soft substrate, a resting fluid droplet will cause significant deformation of the substrate. This deformation is driven by a combination of capillary forces at the contact line and the fluid pressure at the solid surface. These forces are balanced at the surface by the solid traction stress induced by the substrate deformation. Young's Law, which predicts the equilibrium contact angle of the droplet, also indicates an a priori radial force balance for rigid substrates, but not necessarily for soft substrates that deform under loading. It remains an open question whether the contact line transmits a non-zero force tangent to the substrate surface in addition to the conventional normal (vertical) force. We present an analytic Fourier transform solution technique that includes general interfacial energy conditions, which govern the contact angle of a 2D droplet. This includes evaluating the effect of gravity on the droplet shape in order to determine the correct fluid pressure at the substrate surface for larger droplets. Importantly, we find that in order to avoid a strain singularity at the contact line under a non-zero tangential contact line force, it is necessary to include a previously neglected horizontal traction boundary condition. To quantify the effects of the contact line and identify key quantities that will be experimentally accessible for testing the model, we evaluate solutions for the substrate surface displacement field as a function of Poisson's ratio and zero/non-zero tangential contact line forces.

We next address the issue of determining the qualitative behaviour of solutions under appropriate assumptions on the asymptotic properties of $B_1$ and $B_2$ . Indeed, for arbitrary $\chi>0$ , we obtain boundedness of the solutions given strict positivity of the average of $B_2$ over the domain; moreover, it is seen that imposing a mild decay assumption on $B_1$ implies that u must decay to zero in the long-term limit. Analysis ℓ1-recovery refers to a technique of recovering a signal that is sparse in some transform domain from incomplete corrupted measurements. This includes total variation minimization as an important special case when the transform domain is generated by a difference operator. In the present paper, we provide a bound on the number of Gaussian measurements required for successful recovery for total variation and for the case that the analysis operator is a frame. The bounds are particularly suitable when the sparsity of the analysis representation of the signal is not very small.

A model focusing on key components involved in tumour invasion is studied. Tumour cell migration is based on cell motility and haptotaxis, i.e., the directed migratory response of tumour cells up gradients of cell-adhesion molecules. Individual cell processes are modelled according to cell age and several tumour phenotypes are incorporated. Global existence and uniqueness of nonnegative solutions to the corresponding coupled system of nonlinear partial differential equations are shown.

This paper is concerned with the spatial dynamics of a monostable delayed age-structured population model in a 2D lattice strip. When there exists no positive equilibrium, we prove the global attractivity of the zero equilibrium. Otherwise, we give some sufficient conditions to guarantee the global attractivity of the unique positive equilibrium by establishing a series of comparison arguments. Furthermore, when those conditions do not hold, we show that the system is uniformly persistent. Finally, the spreading speed, including the upward convergence, is established for the model without the monotonicity of the growth function. The linear determinacy of the spreading speed and its coincidence with the minimal wave speed are also proved.
