We prove the logarithmic Sarnak conjecture for sequences of subquadratic word growth. In particular, we show that the Liouville function has at least quadratically many sign patterns. We deduce the main theorem from a variant which bounds the correlations between multiplicative functions and sequences with subquadratically many words which occur with positive logarithmic density. This allows us to actually prove that our multiplicative functions do not locally correlate with sequences of subquadratic word growth. We also prove a conditional result which shows that if the ( $\kappa -1$ )-Fourier uniformity conjecture holds then the Liouville function does not correlate with sequences with $O(n^{t-\varepsilon })$ many words of length n where $t = \kappa (\kappa +1)/2$ . We prove a variant of the $1$ -Fourier uniformity conjecture where the frequencies are restricted to any set of box dimension less than $1$ .

We define a new class of shift spaces which contains a number of classes of interest, like Sturmian shifts used in discrete geometry. We show that this class is closed under two natural transformations. The first one is called conjugacy and is obtained by sliding block coding. The second one is called the complete bifix decoding, and typically includes codings by non-overlapping blocks of fixed length.

Consider a three-dimensional partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism. It is proved that under some rigid hypothesis on the tangent bundle dynamics, the map is (modulo finite covers and iterates) an Anosov diffeomorphism, a (generalized) skew-product or the time-one map of an Anosov flow, thus recovering a well-known classification conjecture of the second author to this restricted setting.

We calculate the growth rate of the complexity function for polytopal cut and project sets. This generalizes work of Julien where the almost canonical condition is assumed. The analysis of polytopal cut and project sets has often relied on being able to replace acceptance domains of patterns by so-called cut regions. Our results correct mistakes in the literature where these two notions are incorrectly identified. One may only relate acceptance domains and cut regions when additional conditions on the cut and project set hold. We find a natural condition, called the quasicanonical condition, guaranteeing this property and demonstrate by counterexample that the almost canonical condition is not sufficient for this. We also discuss the relevance of this condition for the current techniques used to study the algebraic topology of polytopal cut and project sets.

Unstable pressure and u-equilibrium states are introduced and investigated for a partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism f. We define the unstable pressure $P^{u}(f, \varphi )$ of f at a continuous function $\varphi $ via the dynamics of f on local unstable leaves. A variational principle for unstable pressure $P^{u}(f, \varphi )$ , which states that $P^{u}(f, \varphi )$ is the supremum of the sum of the unstable entropy and the integral of $\varphi $ taken over all invariant measures, is obtained. U-equilibrium states at which the supremum in the variational principle attains and their relation to Gibbs u-states are studied. Differentiability properties of unstable pressure, such as tangent functionals, Gateaux differentiability and Fréchet differentiability and their relations to u-equilibrium states, are also considered.

We study dynamical systems that have bounded complexity with respect to three kinds metrics: the Bowen metric $d_{n}$, the max-mean metric $\hat{d}_{n}$ and the mean metric $\bar{d}_{n}$, both in topological dynamics and ergodic theory. It is shown that a topological dynamical system $(X,T)$ has bounded complexity with respect to $d_{n}$ (respectively $\hat{d}_{n}$) if and only if it is equicontinuous (respectively equicontinuous in the mean). However, we construct minimal systems that have bounded complexity with respect to $\bar{d}_{n}$ but that are not equicontinuous in the mean. It turns out that an invariant measure $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}$ on $(X,T)$ has bounded complexity with respect to $d_{n}$ if and only if $(X,T)$ is $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}$-equicontinuous. Meanwhile, it is shown that $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}$ has bounded complexity with respect to $\hat{d}_{n}$ if and only if $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}$ has bounded complexity with respect to $\bar{d}_{n}$, if and only if $(X,T)$ is $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}$-mean equicontinuous and if and only if it has discrete spectrum.

Given a ${\mathcal{C}}^{\infty }$ expanding map $T$ of the circle, we construct a Hilbert space ${\mathcal{H}}$ of smooth functions on which the transfer operator ${\mathcal{L}}$ associated to $T$ acts as a compact operator. This result is made quantitative (in terms of singular values of the operator ${\mathcal{L}}$ acting on ${\mathcal{H}}$) using the language of Denjoy–Carleman classes. Moreover, the nuclear power decomposition of Baladi and Tsujii can be performed on the space ${\mathcal{H}}$, providing a bound on the growth of the dynamical determinant associated to ${\mathcal{L}}$.

Let $B$ be a rational function of degree at least two that is neither a Lattès map nor conjugate to $z^{\pm n}$ or $\pm T_{n}$. We provide a method for describing the set $C_{B}$ consisting of all rational functions commuting with $B$. Specifically, we define an equivalence relation $\underset{B}{{\sim}}$ on $C_{B}$ such that the quotient $C_{B}/\underset{B}{{\sim}}$ possesses the structure of a finite group $G_{B}$, and describe generators of $G_{B}$ in terms of the fundamental group of a special graph associated with $B$.

Let G be a semisimple real algebraic group defined over ${\mathbb {Q}}$ , $\Gamma $ be an arithmetic subgroup of G, and T be a maximal ${\mathbb {R}}$ -split torus. A trajectory in $G/\Gamma $ is divergent if eventually it leaves every compact subset. In some cases there is a finite collection of explicit algebraic data which accounts for the divergence. If this is the case, the divergent trajectory is called obvious. Given a closed cone in T, we study the existence of non-obvious divergent trajectories under its action in $G\kern-1pt{/}\kern-1pt\Gamma $ . We get a sufficient condition for the existence of a non-obvious divergence trajectory in the general case, and a full classification under the assumption that $\mathrm {rank}_{{\mathbb {Q}}}G=\mathrm {rank}_{{\mathbb {R}}}G=2$ .

We study lattice embeddings for the class of countable groups $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}$ defined by the property that the largest amenable uniformly recurrent subgroup ${\mathcal{A}}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}}$ is continuous. When ${\mathcal{A}}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}}$ comes from an extremely proximal action and the envelope of ${\mathcal{A}}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}}$ is coamenable in $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}$, we obtain restrictions on the locally compact groups $G$ that contain a copy of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}$ as a lattice, notably regarding normal subgroups of $G$, product decompositions of $G$, and more generally dense mappings from $G$ to a product of locally compact groups.

Let $M$ be a closed, oriented, and connected Riemannian $n$-manifold, for $n\geq 2$, which is not a rational homology sphere. We show that, for a non-constant and non-injective uniformly quasiregular self-map $f:M\rightarrow M$, the topological entropy $h(f)$ is $\log \deg f$. This proves Shub’s entropy conjecture in this case.

We give sufficient conditions for the non-triviality of the Poisson boundary of random walks on $H(\mathbb{Z})$ and its subgroups. The group $H(\mathbb{Z})$ is the group of piecewise projective homeomorphisms over the integers defined by Monod [Groups of piecewise projective homeomorphisms. Proc. Natl Acad. Sci. USA110(12) (2013), 4524–4527]. For a finitely generated subgroup $H$ of $H(\mathbb{Z})$, we prove that either $H$ is solvable or every measure on $H$ with finite first moment that generates it as a semigroup has non-trivial Poisson boundary. In particular, we prove the non-triviality of the Poisson boundary of measures on Thompson’s group $F$ that generate it as a semigroup and have finite first moment, which answers a question by Kaimanovich [Thompson’s group $F$ is not Liouville. We study dynamical systems $(X,G,m)$ with a compact metric space $X$, a locally compact, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E}$-compact, abelian group $G$ and an invariant Borel probability measure $m$ on $X$. We show that such a system has a discrete spectrum if and only if a certain space average over the metric is a Bohr almost periodic function. In this way, this average over the metric plays, for general dynamical systems, a similar role to that of the autocorrelation measure in the study of aperiodic order for special dynamical systems based on point sets.

We prove several general conditional convergence results on ergodic averages for horocycle and geodesic subgroups of any continuous $\operatorname {SL}(2, \mathbb {R})$ -action on a locally compact space. These results are motivated by theorems of Eskin, Mirzakhani and Mohammadi on the $\operatorname {SL}(2, \mathbb {R})$ -action on the moduli space of Abelian differentials. By our argument we can derive from these theorems an improved version of the ‘weak convergence’ of push-forwards of horocycle measures under the geodesic flow and a short proof of weaker versions of theorems of Chaika and Eskin on Birkhoff genericity and Oseledets regularity in almost all directions for the Teichmüller geodesic flow.

We adapt techniques developed by Hochman to prove a non-singular ergodic theorem for $\mathbb {Z}^d$ -actions where the sums are over rectangles with side lengths increasing at arbitrary rates, and in particular are not necessarily balls of a norm. This result is applied to show that the critical dimensions with respect to sequences of such rectangles are invariants of metric isomorphism. These invariants are calculated for the natural action of $\mathbb {Z}^d$ on a product of d measure spaces.

We consider here a certain class of groupoids obtained via an equivalence relation (the so-called subgroupoids of pair groupoids). We generalize to Haar systems in these groupoids some results related to entropy and pressure which are well known in thermodynamic formalism. We introduce a transfer operator, where the equivalence relation (which defines the groupoid) plays the role of the dynamics and the corresponding transverse function plays the role of the a priori probability. We also introduce the concept of invariant transverse probability and of entropy for an invariant transverse probability, as well as of pressure for transverse functions. Moreover, we explore the relation between quasi-invariant probabilities and transverse measures. Some of the general results presented here are not for continuous modular functions but for the more general class of measurable modular functions.

We provide conditions that imply the continuity of the Lyapunov exponents for non-uniformly fiber-bunched cocycles in $SL(2,\mathbb {R})$ . The main theorem is an extension of the result of Backes, Brown and Butler and gives a partial answer to a conjecture of Marcelo Viana.

We provide a detailed study of actions of the integers on compact quantum metric spaces, which includes general criteria ensuring that the associated crossed product algebra is again a compact quantum metric space in a natural way. Moreover, we provide a flexible set of assumptions ensuring that a continuous family of $\ast$-automorphisms of a compact quantum metric space yields a field of crossed product algebras which varies continuously in Rieffel’s quantum Gromov–Hausdorff distance. Finally, we show how our results apply to continuous families of Lip-isometric actions on compact quantum metric spaces and to families of diffeomorphisms of compact Riemannian manifolds which vary continuously in the Whitney $C^{1}$-topology.

We show that for any quasimeromorphic mapping with an essential singularity at infinity, there exist points whose iterates tend to infinity arbitrarily slowly. This extends a result by Nicks for quasiregular mappings, and Rippon and Stallard for transcendental meromorphic functions on the complex plane. We further establish a new result for the growth rate of quasiregular mappings near an essential singularity, and briefly extend some results regarding the bounded orbit set and the bungee set to the quasimeromorphic setting.
