We study homeomorphisms of a Cantor set with $k$ ($k<+\infty$) minimal invariant closed (but not open) subsets; we also study crossed product C*-algebras associated to these Cantor systems and certain of their orbit-cut sub-C*-algebras. In the case where $k\geq 2$, the crossed product C*-algebra is stably finite, has stable rank 2, and has real rank 0 if in addition $(X,\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E})$ is aperiodic. The image of the index map is connected to certain directed graphs arising from the Bratteli–Vershik–Kakutani model of the Cantor system. Using this, it is shown that the ideal of the Bratteli diagram (of the Bratteli–Vershik–Kakutani model) must have at least $k$ vertices at each level, and the image of the index map must consist of infinitesimals.

In this survey we prove the sharpest results on the loss of Sobolev regularity for solutions of the cohomological equation for translation flows on translation surfaces, available to the methods developed by the author in Forni [Solutions of the cohomological equation for area-preserving flows on compact surfaces of higher genus. Ann. of Math. (2)146(2) (1997), 295–344] and Forni [Deviation of ergodic averages for area-preserving flows on surfaces of higher genus. Ann. of Math. (2)155(1) (2002), 1–103]. The paper was mostly written between 2005 and 2006 while the author was at the University of Toronto, Canada, and was posted on arXiv in July 2007 [Forni. Sobolev regularity of solutions of the cohomological equation. Preprint, 2007, arXiv:0707.0940v2]. In an updated introduction we describe our results, taking into account later work on the problem and relevant recent progress in the field of Teichmüller dynamics, interval exchange transformations and translation flows.

We prove that all transcendental entire functions have infinite topological entropy.

We show that if a partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism of a Seifert manifold induces a map in the base which has a pseudo-Anosov component then it cannot be dynamically coherent. This extends [C. Bonatti, A. Gogolev, A. Hammerlindl and R. Potrie. Anomalous partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms III: Abundance and incoherence. Geom. Topol., to appear] to the whole isotopy class. We relate the techniques to the study of certain partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms in hyperbolic 3-manifolds performed in [T. Barthelmé, S. Fenley, S. Frankel and R. Potrie. Partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms homotopic to the identity in dimension 3, part I: The dynamically coherent case. The appendix reviews some consequences of the Nielsen–Thurston classification of surface homeomorphisms for the dynamics of lifts of such maps to the universal cover.

The papers [O. M. Sarig. Symbolic dynamics for surface diffeomorphisms with positive entropy. J. Amer. Math. Soc.26(2) (2013), 341–426] and [S. Ben Ovadia. Symbolic dynamics for non-uniformly hyperbolic diffeomorphisms of compact smooth manifolds. J. Mod. Dyn.13 (2018), 43–113] constructed symbolic dynamics for the restriction of $C^r$ diffeomorphisms to a set $M'$ with full measure for all sufficiently hyperbolic ergodic invariant probability measures, but the set $M'$ was not identified there. We improve the construction in a way that enables $M'$ to be identified explicitly. One application is the coding of infinite conservative measures on the homoclinic classes of Rodriguez-Hertz et al. [Uniqueness of SRB measures for transitive diffeomorphisms on surfaces. Comm. Math. Phys.306(1) (2011), 35–49].

There is much research on the dynamical complexity on irregular sets and level sets of ergodic average from the perspective of density in base space, the Hausdorff dimension, Lebesgue positive measure, positive or full topological entropy (and topological pressure), etc. However, this is not the case from the viewpoint of chaos. There are many results on the relationship of positive topological entropy and various chaos. However, positive topological entropy does not imply a strong version of chaos, called DC1. Therefore, it is non-trivial to study DC1 on irregular sets and level sets. In this paper, we will show that, for dynamical systems with specification properties, there exist uncountable DC1-scrambled subsets in irregular sets and level sets. Meanwhile, we prove that several recurrent level sets of points with different recurrent frequency have uncountable DC1-scrambled subsets. The major argument in proving the above results is that there exists uncountable DC1-scrambled subsets in saturated sets.

We study fast approximation of integrals with respect to stationary probability measures associated to iterated function systems on the unit interval. We provide an algorithm for approximating the integrals under certain conditions on the iterated function system and on the function that is being integrated. We apply this technique to estimate Hausdorff moments, Wasserstein distances and Lyapunov exponents of stationary probability measures.

We study the dynamics induced by homogeneous polynomials on Banach spaces. It is known that no homogeneous polynomial defined on a Banach space can have a dense orbit. We show a simple and natural example of a homogeneous polynomial with an orbit that is at the same time $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}$-dense (the orbit meets every ball of radius $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}$), weakly dense and such that $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}\cdot \text{Orb}_{P}(x)$ is dense for every $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}\subset \mathbb{C}$ that either is unbounded or has 0 as an accumulation point. Moreover, we generalize the construction to arbitrary infinite-dimensional separable Banach spaces. To prove this, we study Julia sets of homogeneous polynomials on Banach spaces.

We extend the unpublished work of Handel and Miller on the classification, up to isotopy, of endperiodic automorphisms of surfaces. We give the Handel–Miller construction of the geodesic laminations, give an axiomatic theory for pseudo-geodesic laminations, show that the geodesic laminations satisfy the axioms, and prove that pseudo-geodesic laminations satisfying our axioms are ambiently isotopic to the geodesic laminations. The axiomatic approach allows us to show that the given endperiodic automorphism is isotopic to a smooth endperiodic automorphism preserving smooth laminations ambiently isotopic to the original ones. Using the axioms, we also prove the ‘transfer theorem’ for foliations of 3-manifolds, namely that, if two depth-one foliations ${\mathcal{F}}$ and ${\mathcal{F}}^{\prime }$ are transverse to a common one-dimensional foliation ${\mathcal{L}}$ whose monodromy on the non-compact leaves of ${\mathcal{F}}$ exhibits the nice dynamics of Handel–Miller theory, then ${\mathcal{L}}$ also induces monodromy on the non-compact leaves of ${\mathcal{F}}^{\prime }$ exhibiting the same nice dynamics. Our theory also applies to surfaces with infinitely many ends.

Given a positive integer M and $q \in (1, M+1]$ we consider expansions in base q for real numbers $x \in [0, {M}/{q-1}]$ over the alphabet $\{0, \ldots , M\}$ . In particular, we study some dynamical properties of the natural occurring subshift $(\boldsymbol{{V}}_q, \sigma )$ related to unique expansions in such base q. We characterize the set of $q \in \mathcal {V} \subset (1,M+1]$ such that $(\boldsymbol{{V}}_q, \sigma )$ has the specification property and the set of $q \in \mathcal {V}$ such that $(\boldsymbol{{V}}_q, \sigma )$ is a synchronized subshift. Such properties are studied by analysing the combinatorial and dynamical properties of the quasi-greedy expansion of q. We also calculate the size of such classes as subsets of $\mathcal {V}$ giving similar results to those shown by Blanchard [ 10 ] and Schmeling in [ 36 ] in the context of $\beta $ -transformations.

A domain exchange map (DEM) is a dynamical system defined on a smooth Jordan domain which is a piecewise translation. We explain how to use cut-and-project sets to construct minimal DEMs. Specializing to the case in which the domain is a square and the cut-and-project set is associated to a Galois lattice, we construct an infinite family of DEMs in which each map is associated to a Pisot–Vijayaraghavan (PV) number. We develop a renormalization scheme for these DEMs. Certain DEMs in the family can be composed to create multistage, renormalizable DEMs.

We discuss the relation between the existence of fixed points of the Ruelle operator acting on different Banach spaces, and Sullivan’s conjecture in holomorphic dynamics.

It is shown that the Ellis semigroup of a $\mathbb Z$ -action on a compact totally disconnected space is completely regular if and only if forward proximality coincides with forward asymptoticity and backward proximality coincides with backward asymptoticity. Furthermore, the Ellis semigroup of a $\mathbb Z$ - or $\mathbb R$ -action for which forward proximality and backward proximality are transitive relations is shown to have at most two left minimal ideals. Finally, the notion of near simplicity of the Ellis semigroup is introduced and related to the above.

In this paper we study topological properties of the right action by translation of the Weyl chamber flow on the space of Weyl chambers. We obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for topological mixing.

Let $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}$ denote the mapping class group of the plane minus a Cantor set. We show that every action of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}$ on the circle is either trivial or semiconjugate to a unique minimal action on the so-called simple circle.

We derive the almost sure Assouad spectrum and quasi-Assouad dimension of one-variable random self-affine Bedford–McMullen carpets. Previous work has revealed that the (related) Assouad dimension is not sufficiently sensitive to distinguish between subtle changes in the random model, since it tends to be almost surely ‘as large as possible’ (a deterministic quantity). This has been verified in conformal and non-conformal settings. In the conformal setting, the Assouad spectrum and quasi-Assouad dimension behave rather differently, tending to almost surely coincide with the upper box dimension. Here we investigate the non-conformal setting and find that the Assouad spectrum and quasi-Assouad dimension generally do not coincide with the box dimension or Assouad dimension. We provide examples highlighting the subtle differences between these notions. Our proofs combine deterministic covering techniques with suitably adapted Chernoff estimates and Borel–Cantelli-type arguments.

The field of descriptive combinatorics investigates to what extent classical combinatorial results and techniques can be made topologically or measure-theoretically well behaved. This paper examines a class of coloring problems induced by actions of countable groups on Polish spaces, with the requirement that the desired coloring be Baire measurable. We show that the set of all such coloring problems that admit a Baire measurable solution for a particular free action $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$ is complete analytic (apart from the trivial situation when the orbit equivalence relation induced by $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$ is smooth on a comeager set); this result confirms the ‘hardness’ of finding a topologically well-behaved coloring. When $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$ is the shift action, we characterize the class of problems for which $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$ has a Baire measurable coloring in purely combinatorial terms; it turns out that closely related concepts have already been studied in graph theory with no relation to descriptive set theory. We remark that our framework permits a wholly dynamical interpretation (with colorings corresponding to equivariant maps to a given subshift), so this article can also be viewed as a contribution to generic dynamics.

We prove that for any countable group $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}$, there exists a free minimal continuous action $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}:\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}\curvearrowright {\mathcal{C}}$ on the Cantor set admitting an invariant Borel probability measure.

Using open books, we prove the existence of a non-vanishing steady solution to the Euler equations for some metric in every homotopy class of non-vanishing vector fields of any odd-dimensional manifold. As a corollary, any such field can be realized in an invariant submanifold of a contact Reeb field on a sphere of high dimension. The solutions constructed are geodesible and hence of Beltrami type, and can be modified to obtain chaotic fluids. We characterize Beltrami fields in odd dimensions and show that there always exist volume-preserving Beltrami fields which are neither geodesible nor Euler flows for any metric. This contrasts with the three-dimensional case, where every volume-preserving Beltrami field is a steady Euler flow for some metric. Finally, we construct a non-vanishing Beltrami field (which is not necessarily volume-preserving) without periodic orbits in every manifold of odd dimension greater than three.

We show that a sectional-hyperbolic attracting set for a Hölder- $C^{1}$ vector field admits finitely many physical/SRB measures whose ergodic basins cover Lebesgue almost all points of the basin of topological attraction. In addition, these physical measures depend continuously on the flow in the $C^{1}$ topology, that is, sectional-hyperbolic attracting sets are statistically stable. To prove these results we show that each central-unstable disk in a neighborhood of this class of attracting sets is eventually expanded to contain a ball whose inner radius is uniformly bounded away from zero.
