Let G be a permutation group on a set Ω with no fixed points in Ω and let m be a positive integer. Then we define the movement of G as, m := move(G) := supΓ{|Γg \ Γ| │ g ∈ G}. Let p be a prime, p ≥ 5. If G is not a 2-group and p is the least odd prime dividing |G|, then we show that n := |Ω| ≤ 4m – p + 3.

Moreover, if we suppose that the permutation group induced by G on each orbit is not a 2-group then we improve the last bound of n and for an infinite family of groups the bound is attained.

In this paper, we discuss the relationship among the concepts of an S-strictly quasiconcave vector-valued function introduced by Benson and Sun, a C-strongly quasiconcave vector-valued function and a C-strictly quasiconcave vector-valued function in a topological vector space with a lattice ordering. We generalize a main result obtained by Benson and Sun about the closedness of an efficient solution set in multiple objective programming. We prove that an efficient solution set is closed and connected when the objective function is a continuous S-strictly quasiconcave vector-valued function, the objective space is a topological vector lattice and the ordering cone has a nonempty interior.

Let Y = {z ∈ C: z3 ∈ [0, 1]} (equipped with subspace topology of the complex space C) and let f: Y → Y be a continuous map. We show that if f is pointwise chain recurrent (that is, every point of Y is chain recurrent under f), then either f12 is the identity map or f12 is turbulent. This result is a generalisation to Y of a result of Block and Coven for pointwise chain recurrent maps of the interval.

In this article we consider index 1 invariant subspaces M of the operator of multiplication by ζ(z) = z, Mζ, on the Bergman space of the unit disc . It turns out that there is a positive sesquianalytic kernel lλ defined on  ×  which determines M uniquely. Here we study the boundary behaviour and some of the basic properties of the kernel lλ. Among other things, we show that if the lower zero set of M, (M), is nonempty, the kernel lλ for fixed λ ∈  has a meromorphic continuation across \(M), where  is the unit circle. Furthermore we consider some special type of kernels lλ and by studying their structure we obtain information for the invariant subspaces related to them. Lastly, and after introducing the general for the invariant subspaces related to them. Lastly, and after introducing the general vector valued setting, we discuss some analogous results for the case of , where m is a positive integer.

The Wielandt subgroup of a group is the intersection of the normalisers of its subnormal subgroups. It is non-trivial in any finite group and thus gives rise to a series whose length provides a measure of the complexity of the group's subnormal structure. In this paper results of Ormerod concerning the interplay between the Wielandt series and upper central series of metabelian p-groups, p odd, are extended to the class of all odd order metabelian groups. These extensions are formulated in terms of a natural generalization of the upper central series which arises from Casolo's strong Wielandt subgroup, the intersection of the centralisers of a group's nilpotent subnormal sections.

Let C be a cancellative cone and consider a subcone C0 of C. We study the natural problem of obtaining conditions on a non negative homogeneous function φ: C → R+ so that for each linear functional f defined in C0 which is bounded by φ, there exists a linear extension to C. In order to do this we assume several geometric conditions for cones related to the existence of special algebraic basis of the linear span of these cones.

We consider n-dimensional normally flat submanifolds satisfying these curvature conditions in (n + d)-dimensional Euclidean space n+d. Let be the function-indexed Kaplan-Meier integral process constructed from the random censorship model. We study a uniform version of the law of large numbers of Glivenko-Cantelli type for {Un} under the bracketing entropy condition. The main result is that the almost sure convergence and convergence in the mean of the process Un holds uniformly in ℱ. In proving the result we shall employ the bracketing method which is used in the proof of the uniform law of large numbers for the complete data of the independent and identically distributed model.

Let be the Kaplan-Meier integral process constructed from the random censorship model. We prove a uniform central limit theorem for {Un} under the bracketing entropy condition and mild conditions due to the censoring effects. We also prove a sequential version of the uniform central limit theorem that will give a functional law of the iterated logarithm of Strassen type.

Let N be a fixed positive integer. In this paper, we apply a newly developed method of Eie and Lai to the evaluation of certain infinite trigonometric series. Indeed, we are able to express the sums of these series in terms of Bernoulli polynomials. That is, we obtain several new Bernoulli identities. A similar method leads to Ramanujan's identities.

A multivariate semi-orthogonal frame multiresolution analysis with a general integer dilation matrix and multiple scaling functions is considered. We first derive the formulas of the lengths of the inital (central) shift-invariant space V0 and the next dilation space V1, and, using these formulas, we then address the problem of the number of the elements of a wavelet set, that is, the length of the shift-invariant space W0 := V1 ⊖ V0. Finally, we show that there does not exist a ‘genuine’ frame multiresolution analysis for which V0 and V1 are quasi-stable spaces satisfying the usual length condition.

Let c ≥ 0, d ≥ 2 be integers and be the variety of groups in which every d-generator subgroup is nilpotent of class at most c. N.D. Gupta asked for what values of c and d is it true that is locally nilpotent? We prove that if c ≤ 2d + 2d−1 − 3 then the variety is locally nilpotent and we reduce the question of Gupta about the periodic groups in to the prime power exponent groups in this variety.

In this paper we consider a nonlinear parabolic equation with gradient dependent nonlinearities of the form

0 < p, q and a, b ∈ ℝ, with homogeneous boundary condition in a bounded domain Ω ⊆ ℝ,N. In the case 0 < p, q ≤ 1 we prove the existence of solution for suitable initial data. A comparison theorem for the solutions with respect to supersoultions and subsolutions is proved. Using these result, uniqueness and boundedness of solutions is studied.

Conditions are presented which ensure that an abstractly σ-complete Boolean algebra of projections on a (DF)-space or on an (LF)-space is necessarily equicontinuous and/or the range of a spectral measure. This is an extension, to a large and important class of locally convex spaces, of similar and well known results due to W. Bade (respectively, B. Walsh) in the setting of normed (respectively metrisable) spaces.

Without the need of a constraint qualification, we establish the optimality necessary and sufficient conditions for generalised minimax programming. Using these optimality conditions, we construct a parametric dual model and a parameter-free mixed dual model. Several duality theorems are established.

In this paper we show that a contact metric three-manifold is a generalised (k, μ)-space on an everywhere dense open subset if and only if its characteristic vector field ξ determines a harmonic map from the manifold into its unit tangent sphere bundle equipped with the Sasaki metric. Moreover, we classify the contact metric three-manifolds whose characteristic vector field ξ is strongly normal (or equivalently, is harmonic and minimal).

In this paper we show that there do not exist any real hypersurfaces in a complex two dimensional Grassmannians G2(ℂn+2) with parallel shape operator.

Turbnikov/s property (U, λ, α, β) is investigated. In particular, it is shown that property (U, λ, α, α, − 1) with α > 1 is equivalent to α-uniform smoothness. It s also shown that property (U, 1, α, 1) with α > 1 is equivalent to the space being a Hilbert space. The dual property (U*, γ α α − 1) is also introduced and it is shown that a Banach space X has (U*, γ α, α − 1) if and only if X is α-uniformly convex.
