This investigation reports the first simultaneous measurement of methanesulphonate (MSA) and non-sea salt sulphate (NSSS) in aerosols, surface snow, and ice core samples for a continental site in Antarctica (78°S, 139°E, elevation 2849 m). Aerosol MSA concentrations ranged from 0.09–0.43 nmol m−3 STP (median 0.14 nmol m−3) and were generally lower than those observed at coastal Antarctic sites. NSSS concentrations varied from 0.66–1.32 nmol m−3 stp (median 0.88 nmol m−3), comparable to those reported for other continental Antarctic locations. Whereas the MSA:NSSS molar ratio in aerosol samples was in the range 12.7–32.5% (median 17.0%), the ratio down a snow pit and ice profile varied from 1.14–55.6% (median 3.50%), reflecting the variability to be expected over a period of a decade. The chemical composition and low MSA content suggests an origin of aerosols consistent with long range transport from mid-latitudes.

A sedimentary sequence, c. 5–6 km thick, extending from the Kimmeridgian–Upper Eocene crops out in the James Ross Island area, northern Antarctic Peninsula. This succession is the most important onshore Late Cretaceous–Tertiary sequence in Antarctica and is probably one of the most significant Cretaceous sequences in the Southern Hemisphere. However, the understanding of the geological and palaeontological evolution of the area has been limited by an incomplete knowledge of the biostratigraphy of this region. Palynological studies are providing a finer resolution biostratigraphical zonation scheme than previously possible. This paper reviews the stratigraphy of the basin fill succession and provides a framework for the papers published in this Special Issue.

Polar Regions are the most important soil carbon reservoirs on Earth. Monitoring soil carbon storage in a changing global climate context may indicate possible effects of climate change on terrestrial environments. In this regard, we need to understand the dynamics of soil organic matter in relation to its chemical characteristics. We evaluated the influence of chemical characteristics of humic substances on the process of soil organic matter mineralization in selected Maritime Antarctic soils. A laboratory assay was carried out with soils from five locations from King George Island. We determined the contents of total organic carbon, oxidizable carbon fractions of soil organic matter, and humic substances. Two in situ field experiments were carried out during two summers, in order to evaluate the CO2-C emissions in relation to soil temperature variations. The overall low amounts of soil organic matter in Maritime Antarctic soils have a low humification degree and reduced microbial activity. CO2-C emissions showed significant exponential relationship with temperature, suggesting a sharp increase in CO2-C emissions with a warming scenario, and Q10 values (the percentage increase in emission for a 10°C increase in soil temperature) were higher than values reported from elsewhere. The sensitivity of the CO2-C emission in relation to temperature was significantly correlated with the humification degree of soil organic matter and microbial activity for Antarctic soils.

The Bruce, Discovery, Herdman and Jane banks, all located along the central-eastern part of the South Scotia Ridge, represent isolated topographic highs, surrounded by young oceanic crust (∼5–23 Ma), whose petrological and structural nature is still the subject of speculation due to the lack of relevant data. Surface wave tomography in and around the Scotia Sea region, performed using eight broadband seismic stations and 300 events, shows that the central-eastern part of the South Scotia Ridge is characterized by negative surface wave group velocity anomalies as large as 6% in the period range from 15 s to 50 s. The spatial resolution of our data set (∼300 km) makes it possible to study a specific area (centred at 61°S and 36°W) that includes Discovery Bank and appears to show dispersion characteristics similar to those found beneath the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula and southern South America. Surface wave dispersion curves are inverted to obtain 1-D isotropic shear wave velocity profiles that suggest a continental nature of Discovery Bank. Crustal thickness is in the range 23–28 km with a sub-Moho velocity of 4.1–4.2 km s−1. The boundaries of the negative group velocity anomalies are marked by a high level of seismic activity. The depth of the events and their large seismic moment suggest the presence of continental lithosphere. The continental-type crust of this topographic relief is supported by our interpretation of multichannel seismic reflection profiles acquired across this rise, where the observed seismic structures are interpreted as thinned and faulted continental plateau.

Knowledge of spatial distribution is fundamental to ecological studies and crucial for conservation and management of species and biodiversity, but detailed, large-scale spatial data are lacking for most taxa. Although the Adélie penguin is one of the most intensively studied Antarctic vertebrates, spatial data that could aid in ecological study and conservation management are incomplete. We undertook a large-scale survey of the current breeding distribution of Adélie penguins along 3800 km of the East Antarctic coastline. The survey increased the number of known breeding locations by 50% and revealed that the breeding distribution has expanded in some parts of the survey region over the past two to three decades. The expanding breeding distribution may reflect underlying population dynamics of sustained growth and resultant density dependent effect on dispersal and movement from established breeding sites to new sites. The comprehensive, large-scale distribution data from this study will form a baseline for assessing any future changes in Adélie penguin breeding distribution, provide data for developing spatial models for predicting future changes in breeding distribution under plausible scenarios of environmental change, and contribute to the development of metapopulation models by providing estimates of local colonization and extinction probabilities under specific conditions of metapopulation change.

New apatite fission-track (AFT) ages from Heimefrontfjella and Mannefallknausane indicate that the Mesoproterozoic basement and Permian sedimentary cover rocks were heated to c. 100°C during the Mesozoic. Heating was due to the burial by up to 2000 m of Jurassic lavas at c. 180 Ma, when the area was affected by the Bouvet/Karoo hot spot. Near the developing coastline, the lava pile was quickly eroded and in part deposited on the continental shelf as pebbly and coarse-grained volcaniclastic sandstones. The AFT data indicate that farther inland the lava pile was not eroded until c. 100 Ma, and the Palaeozoic unconformity between the Mesoproterozoic basement and Permo–Carboniferous sedimentary rocks as a reference plane remained at temperatures of c. 80°C. Formation of an up to 800 m b.s.l. deep graben in from Heimefrontfjella as well as flexural uplift and rapid denudational cooling of the not extended crust from Heimefrontfjella southwards occurred at c. 100 Ma. It is speculated that a period of major plate reorganisation and new rifting at c. 100 Ma is responsible for affecting a much wider continental margin as far inland as Heimefrontfjella and producing a total relief in excess of 3500 m.

Using the positive degree days approach and ERA-Interim reanalysis downscaled data, the researchers ran a melt model spatially gridded at 200 m with annual temporal resolution over 32 years and estimated surface melt (SM) and surface runoff (SR) on the Antarctic Peninsula. The model was calibrated and validated independently by field measurements. The maximum surface melt values occurred in 1985 (129 Gt), and the maximum runoff (40 Gt) occurred in 1993; both parameters showed minimum values in 2014 (26 Gt and 0.37 Gt, respectively). No significant trends are present. Two widespread positive anomalies occurred in 1993 and 2006. The results reveal that the floating ice areas produce an average of 68% of runoff and 61% of surface melt, emphasizing their importance to coastal hydrography. During the seven years preceding the Larsen B collapse, surface melt retention was higher than 95% on floating ice areas, and negative runoff anomalies persisted. Excluding the islands, the vicinity of this former ice shelf exhibits the highest specific surface melt and runoff across the studied area.

In mountainous terrain, the relationship between ice sheet dynamics and basal topography is complex, with each component influencing the other. This paper investigates how the last glacial maximum Antarctic Peninsula Ice Sheet might have modified its bed both at maximum extent and during progressive grounding line retreat. Focussing on the Marguerite Trough Ice Stream we then examine the degree to which basal topographical conditions affected the rate of ocean-forced recession. Zones of peak subglacial erosion are preferentially located in areas of convergent flow and where horizontal strain rates are highest. During ice sheet retreat, potential erosion rates increase in these areas, but the foci remain fixed. This leads to selective and progressive deepening of subglacial basins. As grounding lines migrate landward, faster retreat tends to occur over subglacial basins, especially if flow is divergent, whereas slower retreat takes place on sloping beds and where the geometry of the outlet allows convergent flow and a non-negative flux balance. In conclusion the Antarctic Peninsula Ice Sheet selectively erodes its bed beneath linear outlets and, over successive glacial cycles, progressive deepening of subglacial basins may bring about non-linear retreat of the ice sheet margin.

Classification of 162 sample plots of lichen vegetation from the Argentine Islands region, Antarctica, yielded two main groups, the Usnea complex and the Mastodia-Rinodina complex, comprising four and six subordinate communities, respectively. Communities of the Usnea complex typically occur in inland sites with steep slopes, characterized by low chloride, ammonia and phosphate concentrations. Communities of the Mastodia-Rinodina complex occur close to the shore and in areas occupied by birds, where concentrations of chloride, ammonia and phosphate were relatively high. Within each vegetation complex species composition is related to factors indicating nutrient status (chloride and ammonia concentration, distance from the sea), as well as to variables indicating different microclimatic conditions (elevation, aspect, exposure, moisture, and gradient). In canonical correspondence analyses of the data a large part of species variation could not be explained by the environmental variables studied (elevation, gradient, slope aspect, distance from the sea, direction of the sea, presence of guano, exposure, moisture, chloride, ammonia, phosphate and nitrate concentrations). It is suggested that temporal variability in mineral concentrations and the lack of information on differences in length of the growing season at the sample sites are, to a large extent, responsible for this.

On innumerable occasions, Adélie (Pygoscelis adeliae) and emperor penguins (Aptenodytes forsteri) have been observed in close proximity to killer whales (Orcinus orca), with no whale-penguin interactions reported. On the other hand, killer whales reportedly harass and eat seabirds on occasion (Walker 1968: p. 1122, Stacey et al. 1990, Williams et al. 1990). Killer whales are known to prey on young king penguins (A. patagonica) as they are fledging (Guinet 1992, Guinet & Bouvier 1995) and occasionally take emperor penguins (Mikhalev et al. 1981). Thomas et al. (1981) report killer whales chasing Adélies. Here we report the only observations of Adélie-killer whale interactions observed in nine field seasons on Ross Island.

Management of non-native species introductions is a conservation priority in the Antarctic region. However, despite the recognised importance of intra-regional propagule transfer, the majority of studies have focused on inter-regional pathways (i.e. from outside of the Antarctic region). Here we quantify the number of seeds carried by expeditioners who have visited sub-Antarctic Marion Island. We recorded 420 seeds from 225 items of clothing, with seeds found on 52% of the items and soil on 45% of them. The median number of seeds for field-based and station-based personnel was 20.5 and 3 per person, respectively. Waterproof trousers and socks, particularly those of field workers, carry the greatest number of propagules (for field workers, medians of 5 and 6.5, respectively) and therefore should be the focus of intra-regional management interventions. Amongst the seeds found entrained within clothing several were from species which are widespread aliens in the Antarctic region including Agrostis stolonifera, Poa annua and Sagina procumbens, and indigenous zoochorous species (Acaena magellanica, Uncinia compacta) were also well represented. The present data provide quantitative evidence in support of previous, largely hypothetical concerns about the risks of intra-regional propagule transfer in the Antarctic.

Palaeoclimate changes, such as the Medieval Climate Anomaly and the Little Ice Age, are well-defined in the Northern Hemisphere during the past 2000 years. In contrast, these anomalies appear to be either absent, or less well-defined, in high-latitude regions of the Southern Hemisphere. Here, we inferred environmental changes during the past two millennia from proxies in a sediment core from Mago Ike, an East Antarctic lake in Skarvsnes (Lützow Holm Bay). Variations in lake primary production were inferred from fossil pigments, sedimentological and geochemical proxies and combined with absolute diatom counts to infer past diatom productivity and community changes. Three distinct stratigraphic zones were recognized, resulting from a shift from marine to lacustrine conditions with a clear transition zone in between. The presence of open-water marine diatoms indicates a coastal zone seasonally free of sea ice between c. 2120–1500 cal yr bp. Subsequently, the lake became isolated from the ocean due to isostatic uplift. Freshwater conditions were established from c. 1120 cal yr bp onwards after which the proxies are considered highly sensitive to temperature changes. There is no evidence for a Medieval Climate Anomaly, Little Ice Age or twentieth century warming in our lake sediment record suggesting that studies that have imposed Northern Hemisphere climate anomalies onto Southern Hemisphere palaeoclimate records should be treated with caution.

Water tracks are zones of high soil moisture that route shallow groundwater down-slope, through the active layer and above the ice table. A water track in Taylor Valley, McMurdo Dry Valleys, was analysed for surface hydrogeological, geochemical, and biological characteristics in order to test the hypothesis that water tracks provide spatial structure to Antarctic soil ecosystems by changing the physical conditions in the soil environment within the water tracks from those outside the water tracks. The presence of the water track significantly affected the distribution of biotic and abiotic ecosystem parameters: increasing soil moisture, soil salinity, and soil organic matter within the water track relative to soils outside the water track, and reducing soil phosphate, soil pH, and the population of nematodes and other invertebrates in water track soils relative to off track soils. These results suggest that water tracks are distinct and extreme ecological zones in Taylor Valley that provide long-range (kilometre to multi- kilometre) structure to Antarctic hillslope ecosystems through physical control on soil moisture and solute content. Contrary to expectations, these high soil-moisture sites are not hotspots for faunal biological activity because high soil salinity makes them suitable habitats for only the most halo-tolerant organisms.

Within the Western Ross Sea, there are six emperor penguin colonies of widely different size that occur exclusively on sea ice. In 1990 a survey of all six sites, two by close overflights and four from the ground, showed that the breeding habitats were highly variable. The most important physical characteristics of these habitats appear to be stable fast ice, nearby open water, access to fresh snow, and shelter from the wind.

An actinobacterial strain with antimicrobial activity, INACH3013, was isolated from soil collected from Antarctica. The taxonomic status of the isolate was established using a polyphasic approach. The strain was identified as belonging to the genus Streptomyces based on the scanning electron microscopic observation and partial 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. The sequence analysis revealed that strain INACH3013 is closely related to Streptomyces fildesensis (99.8%), S. beijiangensis (98.1%) and S. purpureus (97.2%). A phylogenetic tree constructed using the partial 16S rRNA gene sequences of strain INACH3013 and closely related strains revealed that INACH3013 fell into the same subclade as S. fildesensis and S. purpureus. Strain INACH3013 was observed to be psychrotolerant, slightly halotolerant (up to 5% NaCl) and capable of inhibiting the growth of seven Gram-negative and eight Gram-positive foodborne pathogens. The GenBank/EMBL/DDBJ accession number for the 16S rRNA gene sequence of the strain is KJ624755.

Southern elephant seals Mirounga leonina within the Kerguelen province disperse between Marion Island (MI), Iles Crozet (IC) and Iles Kerguelen (IK) despite the high site fidelity characteristic of this species. From 1987–2002, 199 IC individuals, or 11.63% of the tagged population there, were resighted at MI. Resights of IC seals at MI peaked during the juvenile moult and seals aged 0–2 represent 66% of all resights made. Equal numbers of male and female seals (all age classes) were dispersing. Dispersing breeding females (n = 22, on 33 occasions) outnumbered dispersing breeding males (n = 6, on 16 occasions), after initially emigrating from IC to MI as juvenile seals (natal dispersal). Greater male-mediated gene flow was ultimately attained due to the polygynous mating system and some extremely successful males. Of 132 seals fitted with satellite-relay data loggers at MI, six hauled out at IC and three at IK. Two of the seals which migrated to IC were born at MI; all others were unmarked males likely to be native to IC or IK. Dispersal should ideally be considered when assessing vital rates for southern Indian Ocean elephant seal populations.

The annual and diurnal behaviours of near surface wind speed, temperature, and the radiative budget at Concordia Station (Dome C) in different seasons are shown. The wind speed was lowest in summer when a daily cycle was also observed. The largest mean values were concurrent with boundary layer growth in the afternoon. In winter and spring the wind speed reached the highest mean values. Perturbations in the wind flow were due to warming events which occurred periodically at Dome C. The lowest temperatures were in April and at the end of August. The coreless winter behaviour was perturbed by warming events which in many cases produced an increase in temperature of c. 20°C. The average temperature profiles show permanent thermal inversion, with the exception of a few hours in the afternoons during the summer. The strongest ground-based thermal inversions were observed in the polar winter. The largest potential temperature gradients were limited to a 30–40 m deep layer close to the surface. The net radiation was negative almost all the time with the exception of the period from mid-December to mid-January.

Notothenioid fish of the artedidraconid genus Artedidraco are a little studied, component of the bottom fauna on the Antarctic continental shelf. Trawling in the south-western Ross Sea, especially in shallow areas with sponge beds, yielded a collection of 65 specimens of Artedidraco. These included all four species occurring in the Ross Sea as well as a new species. The new species Artedidraco glareobarbatus is described and illustrated. This species is most similar to A. orianae, but is distinguished by barbel morphology, by higher counts for dorsal rays and vertebrae, by lower counts for upper lateral-line scales and by colour pattern and visceral anatomy. A distinctive spotted colour morph of A. shackletoni is also documented and compared with the typical barred morph. Depth distribution and meristic variation among species of Artedidraco are summarized, and a taxonomic key to the six species is provided.

Recent trawling in the Southern Ocean has yielded individuals of a number of species of the deep sea octopod genus Thaumeledone. This paper provides the first molecular study of the genus, employing molecular sequences from five mitochondrial (12S rDNA, 16S rDNA, COI, COIII, cytochrome oxidase b) and a single nuclear gene (rhodopsin) and includes representatives of each of the known Southern Ocean species. Thaumeledone rotunda, believed to be circumpolar in distribution and found in relatively deep water is the sister taxa to T. gunteri, known only from South Georgia. A notable level of sequence variability was evident between a T. peninsulae individual recently captured from the Powell Basin, and two T. peninsulae individuals captured from the continental slope, north of the South Shetland Islands. This is likely to represent population level intraspecific variation within this species.

Deposition of the Upper Cambrian succession of the Ellsworth Mountains was influenced by major, episodic tectonically-driven changes to the depositional basin geometry. We subdivide the succession into four stratigraphical sequences based on the recognition of three sequence-bounding unconformities. The upper part of Sequence 1 is composed of the laterally equivalent Liberty Hills, Springer Peak and Frazier Ridge formations, a siliciclastic fluvial to marine deltaic association displaying NW-directed palaeocurrents. A switch in the position of the Late Cambrian depocentre from the north-west to the south coincided with cessation of terrigenous clastic deposition and accumulation of Sequence 2, the limestones of the Minaret Formation. Previously unreported talus breccias from the Independence Hills provide important clues to basin configuration at this time. A brief period of emergence of the Minaret Formation is inferred, prior to rapid subsidence and disconformable deposition of Sequence 3 (the ‘transition beds’) in outer-inner shelf environments. Localized intra-basinal uplift occurred prior to the deposition of Sequence 4 (the lower Crashsite Group), the base of which is locally an erosive unconformity, with a correlative conformity exposed elsewhere. We interpret the Upper Cambrian succession as representing the ‘rift-drift’ transition from initial rifting (preceded by Middle Cambrian volcanism) to thermal subsidence along the South African sector of the palaeo-Pacific margin of Gondwana.
