An experimental study was undertaken to measure the instantaneous lift and propulsive forces generated by a rigid, sinusoidally flapping wing at Reynolds numbers ranging from 72 000 to 120 000. The wing was flapped about a fulcrum at the root at frequencies of 2.55 Hz and 3.30 Hz. Instrumentation and a data reduction system were developed to provide quick and reliable assessment of the effects of changes in flapping amplitude, flapping frequency, flapping plane angle, wing incidence, and windspeed. In this way it was attempted to model, however crudely, the forward flapping flight of birds.

The instantaneous values of lift coefficient and thrust coefficient were plotted against position in the cycle while the average CL and CT were plotted against advance ratio (ratio of the windspeed to the maximum tip speed velocity). The experimental results were compared to the theories of Walker(e) and Hoist ' Kuchemann(4) both modified to correspond more closely to the experimental conditions.

A simple method is given for calculating, in incompressible flow, the spanwise and chordwise loadings on thin swept wings with symmetrical aerofoil sections and of moderate and large aspect ratios. The present note is based on, and continues, the investigation described in an earlier paper. The design of swept wings with given spanwise and chordwise load distributions, obtained by modifying the plan form of the wing or by adding camber and twist, is briefly considered, as well as the design of swept wings which give minimum induced drag.

A simple integral method is described for the calculation of a thick axisymmetric turbulent boundary layer. It is shown that the development of the boundary layer can be predicted with acceptable accuracy by using an approximate form of the momentum-integral equation, an appropriate skin-friction law, and an entrainment equation obtained for axisymmetric boundary layers. The method also involves the explicit use of a velocity profile family in order to interrelate some of the integral parameters. Available experimental results have been used to demonstrate the general accuracy of the method.

Three analyses are presented for predicting the development of an axisymmetric turbulent jet issuing into a co-flowing external air stream. The first analysis is analogous to a method used by Patel to predict the growth of a two-dimensional jet in an external air stream. The method is found to be inadequate when the excess velocity on the axis of the jet becomes small compared with the external stream velocity. The second analysis assumes that the turbulence structure is similar at different streamwise stations but it breaks down when the advection of turbulent energy becomes comparable with the turbulent energy production. In the third approach, a two-parameter model of turbulence developed by Rodi and Spalding, which uses two differential equations for the turbulent energy and the length scale of the turbulence respectively, is found to predict closely the experimental results of Antonia and Bilger for a ratio of jet to external stream velocity of 3.0. The success of this last method emphasises the non-similar character of turbulence.

Lean techniques are having a major impact on aerospace manufacturing. However, the cost and value of aerospace (and many other) products is determined primarily in product development. Migrating lean to engineering processes is ongoing in the industry, and a subject of study at the MIT Lean Aerospace Initiative. This paper summarises findings to date, with references to both research literature and successful implementation examples. To implement lean engineering, a three-part approach is needed: Creating the right products, with effective lifecycle and enterprise integration, using efficient engineering processes.

The problem of simulation models capable of predicting the aerodynamic instability of helicopter slung-load cargo containers and bluff bodies is addressed. Instability for these loads is known to depend on unsteady frequency-dependent aerodynamics, but simulation models that include the unsteady aerodynamics do not currently exist. This paper presents a method for generating such models using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to generate forced-oscillation aerodynamic data and frequency domain system identification techniques to generate a frequency response from the CFD data and to identify a transfer function fit to the frequency response. The method is independent of the responsible flow phenomenon and is expected to apply to bluff-bodies generally. Preliminary results are presented for the case of the 6- by 6- by 8-ft CONEX (container express) cargo container. The present work is based on two-dimensional (2D) aerodynamic data for the CONEX side force and yaw moment generated by a forced oscillation in which frequency is varied smoothly over the range of interest. A first-order rational polynomial transfer function is found adequate to fit the aerodynamics, and this is shown to provide a good match with flight test data for the yawing motion of the CONEX.

Several workers have found evidence for the presence of longitudinal vortices in wind tunnel wall boundary layers near the centre line of each wall, although the only actual publication appears to be the reproduction of Bearman's work in Ref. 3. The phenomenon usually observed is shown in Fig. 1: the boundary layer is considerably thickened near the centre line. (This symmetrical and localised perturbation should be distinguished from the effect of non-uniformities in the wind tunnel screens which apparently also leads to longitudinal vortices, randomly spaced across the width of the working section). The hypothetical vortex pattern is also shown in Fig. 1: it arises because lateral pressure gradients in the wind tunnel contraction naturally deflect the slow-moving fluid in the boundary layer towards the centre line more strongly than the main ‘inviscid’ part of the flow, implying the generation of longitudinal vorticity: this is secondary flow of Prandtl's first kind.

The CAA has recognised the need to develop civil standards for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Accordingly the CAA Directorate of Airspace Policy has published the document ‘CAP 722 –Unmanned Air Vehicle Operation in UK Airspace – Guidance’, (which can be accessed via the CAA website — http://www.caa.co.uk/docs/33/CAP722.pdf). The document itemises the top-level military and civil regulations which impact upon the operation of UAVs in the UK. One of the items listed within the document is ‘Civil Certification’ of UAVs. This particular aspect is the responsibility of the Design and Production Standards Division, (D&PSD), of the CAA Safety Regulation Group. The purpose of this paper is to present and explain the current position of D&PSD regarding the appropriate design standards to be applied for the civil certification of the airworthiness of UAVs.

This paper presents the CAA position that UAVs should be granted permission to fly by qualifying for certificates of airworthiness, by demonstration of compliance with defined airworthiness standards comparable to, and derived from, those applied to manned aircraft. The paper also presents a method for determining, to a first approximation, the level of airworthiness standards which should be applied to any particular design of UAV by reference to the existing codes of airworthiness requirements for manned aircraft.

At a sufficiently high Reynolds number small separation bubbles, as for example at the leading-edge of an aerofoil, are characterised by laminar flow separation and turbulent reattachment. The transition to turbulence in the separated-flow region through the introduction of a disturbance at the boundary, localised in time and space, is examined. It is found that transition to turbulence is promoted by rapidly growing convective instabilities, and not an absolute instability at the point of application of the disturbance.

A review of recent developments in helicopter noise reduction is presented. The paper includes a discussion of the present state of understanding of helicopter noise radiation mechanisms and a review of actual noise reductions achieved by the manufacturers over the past decade. An analysis of progress achieved in meeting certification limits is given, together with an evaluation of the impact on design. Future trends in helicopter noise reduction based on current noise research programmes are discussed and suggestions advanced for possible additional areas of study.

A flush air data system uses surface pressure measurements to obtain speed and aerodynamic orientation of a flight vehicle. This paper investigates the use of a neural network to calibrate the air data system on a low-observable aircraft forebody with 22 pressure tappings. Wind tunnel data were obtained for between 0 and 25° angle of attack, 0 to 10° sideslip for speeds of 32, 37 and 45ms-1. Experimental data were used to train multilayer perceptron neural networks. A calibration accuracy of 0·322ms-1, 0·811° and 0·552° for speed, alpha and beta respectively was achieved just using the first five tappings on the nose cone. Increasing the number of tappings used as inputs to the neural network reduces the calibration error. A neural network with 22 inputs gives a best accuracy of 0·095ms-1, 0·15° and 0·085° for speed, α and β respectively. Trained networks show poor robustness to single sensor failures. Robustness is improved by preprocessing input data with an autoassociative network or by introducing sensor redundancy.

The work presented here forms part of a larger project on Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) of aeroengine aeroacoustic interactions. In this paper, we concentrate on LES of near-field flow over an isolated NACA0012 aerofoil at zero angle-of-attack and a chord based Reynolds number of Rec = 2 × 105. A wall-resolved compressible Numerical Large Eddy Simulation (NLES) approach is employed to resolve streak-like structures in the near-wall flow regions. The calculated unsteady pressure/velocity field will be imported into an analyticallybased scheme for far-field trailing-edge noise prediction later. The boundary-layer mean and root-mean-square (rms) velocity profiles, the surface pressure fluctuation over the aerofoil, and the wake flow development are compared with experimental data and previous computational simulations in our research group. It is found that the results from the wall-resolved compressible NLES are very encouraging as they correlate well with test data. The main features of the wall-resolved compressible NLES, as well as the advantages of such compressible NLES over previous incompressible LES performed in our research group, are also discussed.

A three-dimensional moving mesh method for solving the Euler equations describing the compressible flow about a wing undergoing arbitrary motions and deformations is described. A finite-volume formulation is chosen where the volumes distort as the wing moves or deforms. By using transfinite interpolation, a technique for generating the required sequence of grids has been developed. Furthermore, as the speeds of the grid at the vertices of the finite volumes are required by the flow solver, transfinite interpolation is also used to obtain these by interpolation of the boundary speeds. A two-dimensional version of the method has also been developed and results for both two- and three-dimensional transonic flows are presented and compared with experimental data where available.

Large-eddy simulations (LES) have been employed to investigate the far-field four-vortex wake vortex evolution over 10min behind an aircraft formation. In formation flight scenarios, the wake vortex behaviour was found to be much more complex, chaotic and also diverse than in the classical single aircraft case, depending very sensitively on the formation geometry, i.e. the lateral and vertical offset of the two involved aircraft. Even though the case-by-case variability of the wake vortex behaviour across the various formation flight scenarios is large, the final plume dimensions after vortex dissolution are in general substantially different from those of single aircraft scenarios. The plumes are around 170 to 250m deep and 400m to 680m broad, whereas a single A350/B777 aircraft would produce a 480m deep and 330m broad plume. Formation flight plumes are thus not as deep, yet they are broader, as the vortices do not only propagate vertically but also in span-wise direction. Two different LES models have been employed independently and show consistent results suggesting the robustness of the findings. Notably, $CO_{2}$ emissions are only one contribution to the aviation climate impact among several others like contrails and emission of water vapour and nitrogen oxides, which would be all affected by the implementation of formation flight. Thus, we also highlight the differences in ice microphysical and geometrical properties of young formation flight contrails relative to the classical single aircraft case.

New alternative jet fuels have provided many advantages in the aviation industry, especially in terms of economics and environment. However, fuel–seal compatibility is one of the major issues that restricts alternative fuel advancement into the market. Thus, to help understand and solve the problem, this study examines the swelling effect of prepared and non-prepared O-rings in different fuels and aromatic species. Stress relaxation experiments were carried out to evaluate seal compatibility under compression, which mimics engine operation conditions. Seals were compressed and immersed in a variety of fuels and their blends for about 90h while maintaining a constant temperature 30°C and constant compression force of 25% seal thickness. The two types of elastomers investigated were fluorosilicone and nitrile O-rings, which are predominantly used in the aviation industry. Meanwhile, three different fuels and aromatic species were utilised as the variables in the experiments. The fuels used were Jet-A1, SPK and SHJFCS, while the aromatic species added were propyl benzene, tetralin and p-xylene. The swelling effects were determined from the P/Po value. Results indicate that Jet-A1 has the highest swelling effect, followed by SHJFCS and SPK. It was observed that the higher the percentage of aromatics in fuel, the higher the rate of swelling. Furthermore, prepared seals had a lower swelling rate than did non-prepared seals. Meanwhile, the intensity of the swelling effect in the Jet-A1-SHJFCS blends was in the order of 60/40, 85/15 and 50/50 blend. The work done in this study will aid in the selection of suitable aromatic species in future fuels. The novelty of this research lies in the determination of the appropriate amount of aromatic content as well as the selection of type of aromatic and its mixture fuel. Moreover, the various proportions of fuel blends with aromatic are investigated. The primary aim of this study is to understand the behaviour of prepared and non-prepared seals, and their compatibility with alternative fuels.

Circulation control via blowing over Coanda surfaces at transonic freestream Mach numbers is investigated using numerical simulations. The performance and sensitivity of several circulation control devices applied to a supercritical aerofoil are assessed. Different Coanda devices were studied to assess the effect of Coanda radius-to-slot height ratio, nozzle shape and Coanda surfaces with a step. The range of operating conditions for which a supersonic Coanda jet remained attached at transonic freestream conditions were extended by increasing the radius of curvature at the slot exit for Coanda devices with a converging nozzle. Additional improvements were found by reducing the strength of shock boundary-layer interactions on the Coanda surface by expanding the jet flow using a converging-diverging nozzle and also by introducing a step between the Coanda surface and the nozzle exit. The performance when using a converging-diverging nozzle can be matched using a simple stepped Coanda device. It is shown that circulation control has the potential to match the performance of traditional control surfaces during regimes of attached flow at transonic speeds, up to an equivalent aileron deflection angle of 10°. In addition, lift augmentation ratios ΔCl/Cμ of over 100 were achieved.

Flowfield measurements of the blade tip vortices from a rotating helicopter rotor model were performed by three component laser-Doppler velocimetry (3D-LDV) and conventional (two component) particle image velocimetry (PIV). In general, the results are in good correspondence, but also illustrate the different properties of both techniques: LDV offers the capability of three-component measurements, whereas PIV captures the unsteadyness of the flowfield.

Dual-mode scramjet is one of the candidates for hypersonic flight propulsion system which will be used in wide range of flight Mach numbers from 4 to 12 or higher, wherein dual-mode scramjet should be well designed to be suitable for subsonic/supersonic combustion operation according to the flight conditions. Therefore this system is required to operate in a finite number of operational modes that necessitate robust, stable, and smooth transitions between them by which selective operability of supersonic/subsonic combustion modes and efficient combustor operation in these modes may be realised. A key issue in making mode transition efficient and stable is mode transition control. The major problem in mode transition control is the handling of the various flow and combustion coupling effects of dual-mode scramjet whose physical states are spatially coupled and whose governing equations are partial differential equations. Involving these distributed parameter issues, our basic idea is using the shape control theory to study the control problems of mode transition for dual-mode scramjet with the aim of achieving the desirable design properties and increasing control reliabilities. This specific approach is motivated by the promise of novel techniques in control theory developed in recent years. Concrete control arithmetic of this approach, such as shape control model, sensitivity analysis and gradient-based optimisation procedure, are given in this paper. Simulation results for an axisymmetric, wall-injection dual-mode scramjet show the feasibility and validity of the method.

A novel vortex generator design positioned upstream of a normal shock followed by a subsequent diffuser was investigated using large eddy simulations. In particular, “ramped-vane” flow control devices with three different heights relative to the incoming boundary layer thickness (0.34δ, 0.52δ and 0·75δ) were placed in a supersonic boundary layer with a freestream Mach number of 1.3 and a Reynolds number of 2400 based on the momentum thickness. This is the first numerical study to investigate the size effect of the ramped-vane for flow control device in terms of shape factor, flow separation and flow unsteadiness. The results showed that these devices generated strong streamwise vortices that entrained high-momentum fluid to the near-wall region and increased turbulent mixing. The devices also decreased shock-induced flow separation, which resulted in a higher downstream skin friction in the diffuser. In general, the largest ramped-vane (0.75δ) produced the largest reductions in flow separation, shape factor and overall unsteadiness. These results and a careful review of the literature study also determined the quantitative correlation of optimum VG height with Mach number, whereby h/δ~1 is often optimum for incompressible flows while higher Mach numbers lead to small optimum heights, tending towards h/δ~0.45 at M=2.5.

Aircraft sequencing and scheduling within terminal airspaces has become more complicated due to increased air traffic demand and airspace complexity. A stochastic mixed-integer linear programming model is proposed to handle aircraft sequencing and scheduling problems using the simulated annealing algorithm. The proposed model allows for proper aircraft sequencing considering wind direction uncertainties, which are critical in the decision-making process. The proposed model aims to minimise total aircraft delay for a runway airport serving mixed operations. To test the stochastic model, an appropriate number of scenarios were generated for different air traffic demand rates. The results indicate that the stochastic model reduces the total aircraft delay considerably when compared with the deterministic approach.
