We study who perceives gains and losses in political representation in Rwanda and Burundi and why. We do so in the run-up to and during violence, but also in its aftermath characterized by radically different institutional approaches to manage a similar ethnic divide in both countries. We rely on quantitative and qualitative analyses of over 700 coded life histories covering the period 1985–2015. We find convergence in perceived political representation across ethnic groups in Rwanda, but divergence in Burundi, and argue how this relates to the postwar institutional remaking, legitimization strategies, and their impact on descriptive and substantive representation.

The interconnectedness of Atlantic West Africa and the Scandinavian Atlantic in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries exemplifies an entangled or shared history (histoire croisée). The present article maintains that in the context of the brutal transatlantic chattel trade this history manifests different historical trajectories as well as the temporality of episodic events and structural duration that are configured in the divergent itineraries of two eighteenth-century African Christians. Their texts and life histories reveal them as purveyors of intertwined Christian and non-Christian cultural codes and discursive fields, in one case according to a plantation-colony itinerary and in the other according to a world-port itinerary. The complex social realities of multiple texts and material cultures did not operate independently of socioeconomic structures intertwined with Atlantic world circuits.

This study compared the life histories of Hemidactylus frenatus, a significant invasive gecko, and Phyllodactylus palmeus, a Honduran endemic, over 10 wk, June–August 2013 at 12 study sites on the Honduran island of Cayo Menor of the Cayo Cochinos archipelago where H. frenatus arrived in 2008. Three different life-history traits related to invasion success were measured: body size, fecundity and population size. During the study 140 natives and 37 non-natives were captured, weighed, measured and marked uniquely. The number of gravid females and number of eggs were also recorded. Phyllodactylus palmeus was the significantly larger of the two species (60% larger mass, 25% longer SVL) and had higher population abundance at all 12 study sites with some sites yielding no H. frenatus individuals. However, H. frenatus had a larger proportion of gravid females. Observations that the native species is more common despite being sympatric with a known aggressive invader suggest two possibilities: the island is at the start of an invasion, or that the two species co-exist in a more stable fashion.

Behaviours of concern (e.g. aggression) are often present in residents of long-term care (LTC) facilities diagnosed with dementia and may impact quality of life. Prior uncontrolled research has shown that an intervention involving sharing resident life histories may be effective in reducing aggressive behaviours and improving quality of life, perhaps by increasing staff empathy. We used a randomised controlled design, involving a considerably larger sample than previous investigations. We also examined staff perceptions of LTC resident personhood in relation to aggressive behaviour. Seventy-three residents were randomised to either a life history intervention (N = 38) or a control condition (N = 35). Ninety-nine nurses and care aides answered questionnaires about their own attitudes and the residents' behaviours and quality of life at baseline, post-intervention and at follow-up. Results of mixed-effects modelling indicated significant differences between groups in personhood perception and resident quality of life. Personhood perception mediated the relationship between the intervention and improved quality of life. We identified significant negative correlations between resident cognitive impairment and staff perceptions of resident personhood. Qualitative findings suggested that staff primarily changed their verbal interactions with residents following the intervention, which may be particularly helpful for residents with the most severe dementia. Our results indicate that LTC residents benefit when life histories are constructed with their families and shared with nursing staff.

For many years, archaeologists and archaeometallurgists have suggested that recycled copper might have constituted a significant component of the metal in circulation in Britain during the first millennium AD. They have generally failed, however, to suggest a way of observing and quantifying this phenomenon. Here the authors propose a new methodology to rectify this. A large new database of chemical analyses of British copper alloys dating from the late Iron Age to the early medieval period demonstrates the potential of their approach; it shows that significant and measureable changes occur in metal circulation at the beginning of the first century AD and in the early Saxon period.

Oceanographical processes, such as upwelling, induce variations in nutrient availability in marine ecosystems, and evidence indicates that nutrient input can strongly influence the physiological activities, structure, and dynamics of marine communities. Intertidal organisms have long been considered ideal study units in which to quantify the relationship of physical variations and differential energy allocations in specimens that undergo environmental variations, such as observed with nutrient availability. In habitats with differential nutrient input (upwelling versus non-upwelling), both food availability (algae abundance) and seasonal gonadal and foot weight variations were determined in the keyhole limpet Fissurella crassa. Gonadal weight is used as a measure of reproduction allocation whereas foot weight is an indirect indicator of energy allocation towards survival. RNA:DNA ratio in limpets was used as an indicator of biosynthetic capability. Our results indicate that, in general, algae abundance, muscular foot weight, and gonadal weight were higher in upwelling sites during all seasons studied. The same result was found for RNA:DNA ratios. Energetic allocation in animals that inhabit intertidal upwelling habitats supported a constant allocation towards reproduction and soft tissues. In contrast, animals that inhabit non-upwelling habitats showed important energetic restrictions associated with higher water temperature and lower food availability. Our results clearly show that in the keyhole limpet F. crassa food availability is a more important determinant of an individual's condition than a physical variation such as environment temperature.

Two species of benthopelagic deep-water crustaceans, the suprabenthic mysid Boreomysis arctica and the bathypelagic euphausiid Nematoscelis megalops were analysed in their lipidic composition, with especial emphasis on fatty acids, from specimens obtained in the north-west of Mallorca (Balearic Islands, western Mediterranean) at depths ranging between 650 and 780 m. Temporal shifts were studied seasonally, based on five cruises performed in August and November 2003, and February, April and June 2004, using a Macer-GIROQ suprabenthic sledge (0.5 mm mesh size). Evidences of omnivorous and carnivorous feeding habits were found for both species derived from their fatty acid and other lipid profiles. Boreomysis arctica showed a more varied fatty acid profile than N. megalops. This suggests that B. arctica feeds on a wider range of food sources and is a more opportunistic feeder. The high proportions of 16:1(n-7), 20:5(n-3) and 22:6(n-3) fatty acids in both species suggests a link between surface primary production and deep slope habitats, while markers such as 18:1(n-9) and the 20:1(n-9) and 22:1(n-11) fatty alcohols indicate a predatory activity, likely on calanoids. These components may arrive both via phytodetritus deposition to the seabed and by migratory movements of prey consumed by B. arctica and N. megalops close to the sea bottom. Seasonal changes in the total lipids and fatty acid composition of both species are related to the seasonal dynamics in their food sources, coupled with changes in the physiological or developmental stage of individuals. The proportion of total lipids and polyunsaturated fatty acids in the two species may be related to the different life histories of B. arctica and N. megalops. The mysid has direct development of embryos within brood pouches, so eggs with large amount of vitelum are generated and gonad is well developed. By contrast, the meso-bathypelagic euphausiids generate planktotrophic larvae, with a high number of free developmental larvae stages (from nauplius to Furcilia/Calyptopis), and eggs with poor storage of lipid compounds compared with B. arctica embryos.

Reproductive activities of six giant panda females (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) living in the Qinling Mountains of China (Shaanxi Province) were recorded from 1989 into early 1995. Data on mating and birth dates, litter size, cub sex and den use were collected for three of the pandas. At this site, pregnant females migrated to lower elevations in advance of other pandas to seek dens for birthing. One dam was videotaped in the den with her cub from birth to the end of the denning phase at 94 days of age. This cub was repeatedly handled during the dam's absences to obtain data on development and weight. During the early part of the denning phase, the cub was maintained on the dam's body virtually continuously. Post-partum fasting for up to 3 weeks was noted. Dams invariably moved cubs to new dens three or four times during the birth season. By the time cubs left the den at about 3–4 months, they were fully furred and capable of surviving winter temperatures without further shelter. Reproductive parameters for the wild population fell within the range of values for captive pandas, based on information in the literature and in the giant panda studbook. The combined data on length of gestation, intervals between births, litter size and weight, infant development, and reproductive life span reveal a range of life-history variables that strongly resemble the Ursidae.

The unique habitats of marine environments including some organically rich, but physically variable, benthic environments, and the rather uniform, regionally stable, open ocean environments have both produced species of biomineralizing protozoa of remarkable size ranging from several hundreds of microns to several millimetres (for solitary forms of foraminifera and radiolaria for example). Some colonial radiolaria are several centimetres in diameter and may reach lengths of over a metre for filiform species. These larger, free-living protozoa aften harbour algal symbionts and exhibit unusual adaptations to enhance their survival in their unique habitat and to stabilize, if not enhance, their association with their algal symbionts through structural and physiological modifications to complement the unique requirements imposed by animal–algal associations.

La diapause des Cyclopides pélagiques d'un lac tempéré peu profond (Créteil, France) a été étudiée sur un cycle annuel. Une dormance estivale affecte les copépodites IV de Cyclops vicinus (avril-mai à février) et de Diacyclops bicuspidatus (mars à novembre) ; une diapause hivernale est observée chez les copépodites IV de Thermocyclops crassus et chez les subadultes de Thermocyclops oithonoides (septembre à avril).Quelques subadultes de Th. oithonoides ont un arrêt de développement sans pénétration dans le sédiment (diapause active).La biomasse moyenne de la fraction diapausante égale 36 % (15 % à 80 %) de la biomasse totale des Cyclopides pendant la période d'étude. Les effectifs benthiques, compris entre 27 000 ind. m-2 et 350 000 ind. m-2, représentent un potentiel de recolonisation du domaine pélagique de 6 ind. l-1 à 78 ind. l-1.Alors que la diapause hivernale de Th. oithonoides et de Th. crassus est probablement une adaptation à des conditions climatiques défavorables, la diapause estivale de C. vicinus serait une stratégie adaptative d'évitement de la prédation.
