Spanning nearly sixty years of research, statistical network analysis has passed through (at least) two generations of researchers and models. Beginning in the late 1930's, the first generation of research dealt with the distribution of various network statistics, under a variety of null models. The second generation, beginning in the 1970's and continuing into the 1980's, concerned models, usually for probabilities of relational ties among very small subsets of actors, in which various simple substantive tendencies were parameterized. Much of this research, most of which utilized log linear models, first appeared in applied statistics publications.

But recent developments in social network analysis promise to bring us into a third generation. The Markov random graphs of Frank and Strauss (1986) and especially the estimation strategy for these models developed by Strauss and Ikeda (1990; described in brief in Strauss, 1992), are very recent and promising contributions to this field. Here we describe a large class of models that can be used to investigate structure in social networks. These models include several generalizations of stochastic blockmodels, as well as models parameterizing global tendencies towards clustering and centralization, and individual differences in such tendencies. Approximate model fits are obtained using Strauss and Ikeda's (1990) estimation strategy.

In this paper we describe and extend these models and demonstrate how they can be used to address a variety of substantive questions about structure in social networks.

We show that the twin-width of every $n$-vertex $d$-regular graph is at most $n^{\frac{d-2}{2d-2}+o(1)}$ for any fixed integer $d \geq 2$ and that almost all $d$-regular graphs attain this bound. More generally, we obtain bounds on the twin-width of sparse Erdős–Renyi and regular random graphs, complementing the bounds in the denser regime due to Ahn, Chakraborti, Hendrey, Kim, and Oum.

A graph $G$ is $q$-Ramsey for another graph $H$ if in any $q$-edge-colouring of $G$ there is a monochromatic copy of $H$, and the classic Ramsey problem asks for the minimum number of vertices in such a graph. This was broadened in the seminal work of Burr, Erdős, and Lovász to the investigation of other extremal parameters of Ramsey graphs, including the minimum degree.

It is not hard to see that if $G$ is minimally $q$-Ramsey for $H$ we must have $\delta (G) \ge q(\delta (H) - 1) + 1$, and we say that a graph $H$ is $q$-Ramsey simple if this bound can be attained. Grinshpun showed that this is typical of rather sparse graphs, proving that the random graph $G(n,p)$ is almost surely $2$-Ramsey simple when $\frac{\log n}{n} \ll p \ll n^{-2/3}$. In this paper, we explore this question further, asking for which pairs $p = p(n)$ and $q = q(n,p)$ we can expect $G(n,p)$ to be $q$-Ramsey simple.

We first extend Grinshpun’s result by showing that $G(n,p)$ is not just $2$-Ramsey simple, but is in fact $q$-Ramsey simple for any $q = q(n)$, provided $p \ll n^{-1}$ or $\frac{\log n}{n} \ll p \ll n^{-2/3}$. Next, when $p \gg \left ( \frac{\log n}{n} \right )^{1/2}$, we find that $G(n,p)$ is not $q$-Ramsey simple for any $q \ge 2$. Finally, we uncover some interesting behaviour for intermediate edge probabilities. When $n^{-2/3} \ll p \ll n^{-1/2}$, we find that there is some finite threshold $\tilde{q} = \tilde{q}(H)$, depending on the structure of the instance $H \sim G(n,p)$ of the random graph, such that $H$ is $q$-Ramsey simple if and only if $q \le \tilde{q}$. Aside from a couple of logarithmic factors, this resolves the qualitative nature of the Ramsey simplicity of the random graph over the full spectrum of edge probabilities.

We study the problem of identifying a small number $k\sim n^\theta$, $0\lt \theta \lt 1$, of infected individuals within a large population of size $n$ by testing groups of individuals simultaneously. All tests are conducted concurrently. The goal is to minimise the total number of tests required. In this paper, we make the (realistic) assumption that tests are noisy, that is, that a group that contains an infected individual may return a negative test result or one that does not contain an infected individual may return a positive test result with a certain probability. The noise need not be symmetric. We develop an algorithm called SPARC that correctly identifies the set of infected individuals up to $o(k)$ errors with high probability with the asymptotically minimum number of tests. Additionally, we develop an algorithm called SPEX that exactly identifies the set of infected individuals w.h.p. with a number of tests that match the information-theoretic lower bound for the constant column design, a powerful and well-studied test design.

We study computational aspects of repulsive Gibbs point processes, which are probabilistic models of interacting particles in a finite-volume region of space. We introduce an approach for reducing a Gibbs point process to the hard-core model, a well-studied discrete spin system. Given an instance of such a point process, our reduction generates a random graph drawn from a natural geometric model. We show that the partition function of a hard-core model on graphs generated by the geometric model concentrates around the partition function of the Gibbs point process. Our reduction allows us to use a broad range of algorithms developed for the hard-core model to sample from the Gibbs point process and approximate its partition function. This is, to the extent of our knowledge, the first approach that deals with pair potentials of unbounded range.

We determine the order of the k-core in a large class of dense graph sequences. Let $G_n$ be a sequence of undirected, n-vertex graphs with edge weights $\{a^n_{i,j}\}_{i,j \in [n]}$ that converges to a graphon $W\colon[0,1]^2 \to [0,+\infty)$ in the cut metric. Keeping an edge (i,j) of $G_n$ with probability ${a^n_{i,j}}/{n}$ independently, we obtain a sequence of random graphs $G_n({1}/{n})$. Using a branching process and the theory of dense graph limits, under mild assumptions we obtain the order of the k-core of random graphs $G_n({1}/{n})$. Our result can also be used to obtain the threshold of appearance of a k-core of order n.

We study the noise sensitivity of the minimum spanning tree (MST) of the $n$-vertex complete graph when edges are assigned independent random weights. It is known that when the graph distance is rescaled by $n^{1/3}$ and vertices are given a uniform measure, the MST converges in distribution in the Gromov–Hausdorff–Prokhorov (GHP) topology. We prove that if the weight of each edge is resampled independently with probability $\varepsilon \gg n^{-1/3}$, then the pair of rescaled minimum spanning trees – before and after the noise – converges in distribution to independent random spaces. Conversely, if $\varepsilon \ll n^{-1/3}$, the GHP distance between the rescaled trees goes to $0$ in probability. This implies the noise sensitivity and stability for every property of the MST that corresponds to a continuity set of the random limit. The noise threshold of $n^{-1/3}$ coincides with the critical window of the Erdős-Rényi random graphs. In fact, these results follow from an analog theorem we prove regarding the minimum spanning forest of critical random graphs.

We find asymptotics of the maximum size of a chordal subgraph in a binomial random graph $G(n,p)$, for $p=\mathrm{const}$ and $p=n^{-\alpha +o(1)}$.

Researchers theorize that many real-world networks exhibit community structure where within-community edges are more likely than between-community edges. While numerous methods exist to cluster nodes into different communities, less work has addressed this question: given some network, does it exhibit statistically meaningful community structure? We answer this question in a principled manner by framing it as a statistical hypothesis test in terms of a general and model-agnostic community structure parameter. Leveraging this parameter, we propose a simple and interpretable test statistic used to formulate two separate hypothesis testing frameworks. The first is an asymptotic test against a baseline value of the parameter while the second tests against a baseline model using bootstrap-based thresholds. We prove theoretical properties of these tests and demonstrate how the proposed method yields rich insights into real-world datasets.

A bootstrap percolation process on a graph with n vertices is an ‘infection’ process evolving in rounds. Let $r \ge 2$ be fixed. Initially, there is a subset of infected vertices. In each subsequent round, every uninfected vertex that has at least r infected neighbors becomes infected as well and remains so forever.

We consider this process in the case where the underlying graph is an inhomogeneous random graph whose kernel is of rank one. Assuming that initially every vertex is infected independently with probability $p \in (0,1]$, we provide a law of large numbers for the size of the set of vertices that are infected by the end of the process. Moreover, we investigate the case $p = p(n) = o(1)$, and we focus on the important case of inhomogeneous random graphs exhibiting a power-law degree distribution with exponent $\beta \in (2,3)$. The first two authors have shown in this setting the existence of a critical $p_c =o(1)$ such that, with high probability, if $p =o(p_c)$, then the process does not evolve at all, whereas if $p = \omega(p_c)$, then the final set of infected vertices has size $\Omega(n)$. In this work we determine the asymptotic fraction of vertices that will eventually be infected and show that it also satisfies a law of large numbers.

We show that the size-Ramsey number of the $\sqrt{n} \times \sqrt{n}$ grid graph is $O(n^{5/4})$, improving a previous bound of $n^{3/2 + o(1)}$ by Clemens, Miralaei, Reding, Schacht, and Taraz.

We extend a recent argument of Kahn, Narayanan and Park ((2021) Proceedings of the AMS 149 3201–3208) about the threshold for the appearance of the square of a Hamilton cycle to other spanning structures. In particular, for any spanning graph, we give a sufficient condition under which we may determine its threshold. As an application, we find the threshold for a set of cyclically ordered copies of $C_4$ that span the entire vertex set, so that any two consecutive copies overlap in exactly one edge and all overlapping edges are disjoint. This answers a question of Frieze. We also determine the threshold for edge-overlapping spanning $K_r$-cycles.

We study competing first passage percolation on graphs generated by the configuration model with infinite-mean degrees. Initially, two uniformly chosen vertices are infected with a type 1 and type 2 infection, respectively, and the infection then spreads via nearest neighbors in the graph. The time it takes for the type 1 (resp. 2) infection to traverse an edge e is given by a random variable $X_1(e)$ (resp. $X_2(e)$) and, if the vertex at the other end of the edge is still uninfected, it then becomes type 1 (resp. 2) infected and immune to the other type. Assuming that the degrees follow a power-law distribution with exponent $\tau \in (1,2)$, we show that with high probability as the number of vertices tends to infinity, one of the infection types occupies all vertices except for the starting point of the other type. Moreover, both infections have a positive probability of winning regardless of the passage-time distribution. The result is also shown to hold for the erased configuration model, where self-loops are erased and multiple edges are merged, and when the degrees are conditioned to be smaller than $n^\alpha$ for some $\alpha\gt 0$.

We study site and bond percolation in simple directed random graphs with a given degree distribution. We derive the percolation threshold for the giant strongly connected component and the fraction of vertices in this component as a function of the percolation probability. The results are obtained for degree sequences in which the maximum degree may depend on the total number of nodes n, being asymptotically bounded by $n^{\frac{1}{9}}$.

Consider a set of n vertices, where each vertex has a location in $\mathbb{R}^d$ that is sampled uniformly from the unit cube in $\mathbb{R}^d$, and a weight associated to it. Construct a random graph by placing edges independently for each vertex pair with a probability that is a function of the distance between the locations and the vertex weights.

Under appropriate integrability assumptions on the edge probabilities that imply sparseness of the model, after appropriately blowing up the locations, we prove that the local limit of this random graph sequence is the (countably) infinite random graph on $\mathbb{R}^d$ with vertex locations given by a homogeneous Poisson point process, having weights which are independent and identically distributed copies of limiting vertex weights. Our set-up covers many sparse geometric random graph models from the literature, including geometric inhomogeneous random graphs (GIRGs), hyperbolic random graphs, continuum scale-free percolation, and weight-dependent random connection models.

We prove that the limiting degree distribution is mixed Poisson and the typical degree sequence is uniformly integrable, and we obtain convergence results on various measures of clustering in our graphs as a consequence of local convergence. Finally, as a byproduct of our argument, we prove a doubly logarithmic lower bound on typical distances in this general setting.

We consider supercritical site percolation on the $d$ -dimensional hypercube $Q^d$ . We show that typically all components in the percolated hypercube, besides the giant, are of size $O(d)$ . This resolves a conjecture of Bollobás, Kohayakawa, and Łuczak from 1994.

We provide a general purpose result for the coupling of exploration processes of random graphs, both undirected and directed, with their local weak limits when this limit is a marked Galton–Watson process. This class includes in particular the configuration model and the family of inhomogeneous random graphs with rank-1 kernel. Vertices in the graph are allowed to have attributes on a general separable metric space and can potentially influence the construction of the graph itself. The coupling holds for any fixed depth of a breadth-first exploration process.
