Field trials were conducted in the spring of 2004 and the spring and summer of 2005 to evaluate cantaloupe tolerance to rimsulfuron and halosulfuron applied to cantaloupe at the two-leaf stage, five- to six-leaf stage, plants having 30- to 40-cm vines, and plants having up to 5-cm-diam melons. Additionally, control of eight weed species was evaluated in these trials in 2005. Cantaloupe plant injury from rimsulfuron differed among application timings and trials, but applications were generally more injurious when applied at the two early crop stages. Halosulfuron was less injurious to cantaloupe, but 31 and 14% injury occurred following the two-leaf and five- to six-leaf applications, respectively, in the second trial in 2005. In the first trial of 2005, number of marketable melons the first week of harvest was lower for all halosulfuron applications compared with the nontreated control (30 to 37% reduction). In the second trial of 2005, total number of marketable melons was comparable to the nontreated control for each of the halosulfuron treatments, except the five- to six-leaf and up to 5-cm-diam melon applications. Injury estimates were poor indicators of occurrence or absence of delays in crop earliness or number of marketable melons. Rimsulfuron was generally effective (≥ 80% control) in controlling seedling Texas panicum, large crabgrass, tall morningglory, pitted morningglory, and Palmer amaranth, but was ineffective against yellow and purple nutsedge and goosegrass. Halosulfuron was effective in controlling yellow and purple nutsedge, but was ineffective against Texas panicum, large crabgrass, goosegrass, pitted morningglory, tall morningglory, and Palmer amaranth.

In most world crop-production areas, the evolution of herbicide-resistant weeds is becoming a major issue. This problem has become most severe across the Australian dryland crop-production region, where herbicide-resistant weed populations are threatening crop-production profitability and sustainability across 20 million ha. Widespread herbicide resistance has forced changes in agronomic and herbicide practices. This problem is particularly evident in Western Australia, where the frequency and distribution of herbicide-resistant weed populations appear to be greater than anywhere else in the world. Judicious use of herbicide mixtures and rotations can reduce the selection pressure for evolved resistance to any one specific herbicide. Additionally, agronomic practices, such as the double knockdown (preseeding sequential application of nonselective herbicides), increased seeding rates, and targeting of weed seed production to prevent seedbank inputs, are needed to reduce the selection pressure on all herbicides by reducing in-crop weed populations. However, these techniques are not without problems or limitations, and their weed control efficacy is inferior to that of most in-crop selective herbicides. The adoption by Australian farmers of the current limited technology is clear evidence of the value placed on the use of these alternate crop weed-control practices. The continued evolution of herbicide resistance more than justifies continuing research and development efforts to produce integrated strategies and smarter herbicide use so as to achieve sustainable weed management.

Annual ryegrass has been proposed as a cover crop in the corn–soybean cropping systems of the U.S. Midwest because of its low seed cost, rapid establishment, contribution to soil quality, weed suppressive abilities, and susceptibility to common broad-spectrum herbicides. However, cover crops can reduce the subsequent main crop yield by creating unfavorable germination and emergence conditions, harboring pests, and if not controlled, competing with the main crop. This study, conducted in Illinois, Oregon, and Tennessee, investigated the efficacy of glyphosate for annual ryegrass winter cover crop removal. Glyphosate at 415, 830, and 1,660 g ae/ha was applied to annual ryegrass at late tiller, second node, boot, and early flowering stages. Annual ryegrass control was consistently maximized with the highest glyphosate rate applied at the boot or early flower stage. Annual ryegrass biomass was generally the lowest with the highest rate of glyphosate applied at the earlier stages. Overall, no single application timing at any glyphosate rate provided complete control or biomass reduction of the annual ryegrass cover crop. A sequential herbicide program or a glyphosate plus a graminicide tank-mix probably will be needed for adequate annual ryegrass stand removal.

A study was conducted in 2004 and 2005 to evaluate the benefit of applying fluometuron PRE versus glyphosate-only POST programs in second-generation GR cotton (Roundup Ready Flex®). Fluometuron was either included or excluded with POST application timings of glyphosate at the following cotton growth stages: (1) 3 leaf (lf) followed by (fb) 7 lf fb 14 lf (over the top) OT (2) 3 fb 7 lf OT (3) 7 lf OT fb 14 lf postemergence directed (PD), and (4) 7 fb 14 lf OT. Control of goosegrass, Palmer amaranth, pitted morningglory, sicklepod, and smellmelon was increased 2 to 8 percentage points with the addition of fluometuron PRE. The inclusion of fluometuron PRE did not improve control of barnyardgrass, browntop millet, hemp sesbania, johnsongrass, or redroot pigweed and control ranged from 81% to 84%, 69% to 75%, 94% to 94%, 87% to 89%, and 92% to 93%, respectively. By 56 d after the last POST application, control of johnsongrass, Palmer amaranth, pitted morningglory, and smellmelon was at least 83%, 93%, 92%, and 86%, respectively, with only slight differences noted among POST glyphosate programs. Control of barnyardgrass, browntop millet, and redroot pigweed was 68%, 47%, 86%, respectively, with the POST glyphosate program of 3 fb 7 lf OT, which was significantly less than all other glyphosate POST programs. Cotton yield increased 32% and 36% with the addition of fluometuron PRE to glyphosate POST programs consisting of 7 lf OT fb 14 lf PD and 7 lf fb 14 lf OT, respectively. Cotton yield for other glyphosate POST programs including an earlier 3 lf application was not improved when fluometuron was applied PRE. Without inclusion of fluometuron PRE, yield was maximized with the glyphosate POST program that included three applications of glyphosate (2,510 kg/ha). Overall, this research emphasizes the fact that weed control is important in the early season as well as in the late season in second-generation GR cotton.

Research was conducted to evaluate the residual effect of burning and mechanical removal of sugarcane crop residue on weed control and sugarcane growth and yield. In one study, crop residue was removed in December or January within 3 wk after sugarcane harvest. Mechanical removal of residue from the row top and placement in the row middle using a Sunco Trash Tiger® was compared with burning and a no removal control. Superimposed on each residue removal treatment was tillage of row sides and middles in March and in May and a no-tillage program. Tillage efficiency in March when sugarcane was emerging from the winter dormant period was not negatively affected when residue was removed mechanically. Crop residue on the soil surface did not completely suppress winter weed emergence and growth. Based on sugarcane and sugar yield averaged across locations and tillage programs, mechanical removal of residue was as effective as burning. Sugar yield was reduced 7.9% when residue was not removed from the row top compared with burning or mechanical removal. In another study, crop residue of sugarcane harvested in early December was burned or removed mechanically from the row top 4 d after harvest and also mechanically in January, February, or March. Crop residue ground cover of 79% in March on the row top where residue was not removed provided some suppression of winter weeds. Sugarcane shoot population in April was reduced 16.1% when residue removal was delayed until March compared with December. Averaged across tillage and no-tillage treatments in March, sugarcane yield did not differ when residue was removed by burning in December compared with mechanical removal in December or January. Delaying mechanical removal of residue until February or March compared with residue removal in December decreased sugar yield an average of 13.1%.

Preplant applications of two 2,4-D formulations and dicamba were evaluated for injury to no-till soybean. Herbicides applied 28 or 21 d before planting (DBP) at 0.56 kg ae/ha for the 2,4-D formulations and 0.28 kg ae/ha for dicamba did not injure soybean. At 14 DBP soybean injury was lower (< 6%) with applications of 2,4-D than with dicamba (13% to 17%). Injury increased when herbicides were applied at 7 DBP with soybean injury from both 2,4-D (< 11%) and dicamba (< 38%). When the herbicides were applied at planting soybean injury was < 18% with the 2,4-D formulations and < 73% with dicamba. Soybean yields were unaffected by the injury from herbicides applied 21, 14, and 7 DBP. However, soybean yield was decreased to 870 kg/ha in 2005 when dicamba was applied at planting compared to the nontreated check (1,950 kg/ha)

Field studies were conducted in 1999, 2000, and 2001 to evaluate cotton response to trifloxysulfuron applied postemergence over the top (POT) or postemergence-directed (PDIR) at various growth stages. Treatments included trifloxysulfuron at 3.8 or 7.5 g ai/ha plus nonionic surfactant (NIS) applied POT to one-, three-, and five-leaf cotton or applied PDIR to 30- and 45-cm tall cotton. Crop injury 7 d after treatment (DAT) varied by year and ranged from 17 to 50%, 19 to 46%, and 5 to 23% with trifloxysulfuron applied POT to one-, three-, and five-leaf cotton, respectively. Injury 21DAT averaged 22, 16, and 6% with one-, three-, and five-leaf applications respectively. Trifloxysulfuron applied PDIR injured cotton 2 to 9% 7 DAT and 0 to 12% 21 DAT. At 30 DAT, cotton height was reduced with one-leaf trifloxysulfuron application, whereas differences were not present across other treatments. Heights at 90 days after planting (DAP) did not differ between treatments. Neither trifloxysulfuron rate or application timing negatively affected cotton yield or fiber quality.

Littleseed canarygrass is a major weed of winter-season crops, although it is most dominant in wheat-growing regions in the Indo-Gangetic Plains of India, Pakistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh. Resistance in this species to photosystem II–inhibiting herbicide isoproturon was first recorded in 1992, and has since spread to several Indian states covering more than a million ha. Genetic studies and resistance characterization from multiple locations indicate independent evolution of resistance due to continuous use of isoproturon and monoculture rice–wheat-cropping system. Isoproturon-resistant biotypes were found cross-resistant to diclofop, but not to chlortoluron, which has the same mode of action as isoproturon. The isoproturon-resistance mechanism is metabolic degradation, mediated by P-450 monooxygenase enzymes. This type of resistance could become serious and lead to the evolution of multiple resistances to herbicides of different modes of action. Adoption of fenoxaprop-P, clodinafop, and sulfosulfuron in isoproturon-resistant areas since 1997 initially led to high yields, but resulted in a weed flora shift which eventually reduced yields and increased the cost of weed management. Although isoproturon recommendation has been withdrawn from rice–wheat cropping zones, resistance in littleseed canarygrass is spreading in other areas where isoproturon has been used for several years because it is inexpensive and has broad-spectum weed control. Management factors, such zero or minimum tillage, early planting after rice harvest, and alternative herbicides provide effective control of resistant biotypes. However, lower efficacy of these herbicides has been observed in the field, although multiple resistances have yet to be confirmed. Herbicide rotations, mixtures, and sequences are beneficial, but only in the short term. Improved cultivation practices are also helpful; however, no current single system is sustainable. An integration of tillage method, planting time, varietal selection, crop rotation, timing and method of herbicide application, optimum dose, and sanitation practices is crucial in managing herbicide-resistant littleseed canarygrass.

A field study was conducted at Vezaiciai branch of the Lithuanian Institute of Agriculture from 1998 to 2000 to determine weed emergence dynamics in potato and to estimate the effect of different intervals of weed crop competition on potato tuber yield if regular interrow cultivation was applied. Treatments varying in intervals of weed-free conditions and competition were laid out in a randomized complete block design with six replications. The greatest emergence of annual broadleaf such as common lambsquarters and other weeds (62 to 86% of the season total) in the crop was observed in the period from potato planting until flowering. Emergence of winter annuals such as field violet and scentless mayweed was greatest in the period from the 20-cm potato plant height until harvesting. The 20-cm potato height was the most important stage affecting potato yield loss due to weed competition. Potato yield losses due to weed competition were minimized when weeds were removed before the potatoes reached 20 cm or kept clean from this point forward. The results indicated that the critical weed-free period, when weed competition was detrimental to yield, started from planting and lasted until 25 d after flowering.

To date, there have been no reports of Dalmatian toadflax serving as a host for cucumber mosaic virus (CMV). Infestations of Dalmatian toadflax may serve as a reservoir of CMV, thereby facilitating aphid transmission of CMV to both agricultural crops and native plants. The goal of this study was to determine whether Dalmatian toadflax is a host for CMV. Dalmatian toadflax seedlings were randomly assigned to two treatments (18 replicates/treatment): no inoculation (control) and inoculation with CMV (Fast New York strain). The Dalmatian toadflax seedlings were inoculated by standard mechanical methods and tested for the presence of CMV using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Ten of the 18 CMV-inoculated toadflax plants tested positive for the virus; 6 of the 18 displayed systemic mosaic chlorosis and leaf curling. All control plants tested negative. Transmission electron microscopy obtained from CMV-positive plants confirmed the presence of CMV based on physical properties. To verify CMV infestation, tobacco plants were assigned to the following treatments (six replicates/treatment): no inoculation (control), CMV-negative (control) inoculation, and a CMV-positive inoculation. Plants were inoculated by standard methods. Five of the 6 tobacco plants treated with the CMV-positive inoculum tested positive for CMV using ELISA. All control plants tested negative for the virus.

Isoxaflutole and mesotrione have been used to control creeping bentgrass in cool season turf, these experiments evaluate these two products for selective nimblewill control. Three experiments were conducted in Virginia and Tennessee to evaluate selective control options for nimblewill in cool-season turfgrass. Single applications of isoxaflutole control nimblewill more effectively than single applications of mesotrione. Nimblewill control 8 wk after initial treatment (WAIT) increased as mesotrione rates increased from 28 to 280 g ai/ha, and isoxaflutole rates increased from 28 to 168 g/ha. Isoxaflutole at 84 and 168 g/ha were the only single application treatments that controlled nimblewill greater than 80% 8 WAIT. However, sequential applications of isoxaflutole and mesotrione at 28 g/ha, 10 d apart controlled nimblewill 94 and 80%, respectively 8 WAIT. Triclopyr and fenoxaprop-p did not effectively control nimblewill and caused unacceptable turfgrass injury. Long-term control was not evaluated in these studies. However, it was concluded that isoxaflutole and mesotrione at appropriate rates and applied in sequence selectively control nimblewill without harming desirable turf.

The significance of glyphosate and the appearance of glyphosate-resistant weeds have raised concerns about glyphosate sustainability. Resistance-prevention strategies, however, should first consider the mechanisms for resistance. For example, target-site resistance can provide virtual immunity, ensuring that every herbicide application successfully selects for resistance. However, metabolism and exclusion mechanisms provide lower magnitudes of resistance and are dependent on dosage. This discussion proposes that the relative risk of weed resistance is most highly correlated to mode of action (MOA), due to the respective principal mechanism for resistance. The development of data correlating agronomic practices with weed resistance vs. herbicide/MOA choices will be critical to the design of effective prevention strategies. Because resistance to glyphosate in weeds is typically of a low magnitude, using a high-dose strategy should minimize the potential for the selection of resistance and thus help to make the use of glyphosate sustainable. Maximizing weed control is the key to successful agronomic practice with limited weed resistance.

Studies were conducted to evaluate weed management systems in nontransgenic, bromoxynil-resistant, and glyphosate-resistant cotton in strip- and conventional-tillage environments. Tillage did not affect weed control, cotton lint yields, or net returns. Early season stunting in strip-tillage cotton was 5% or less, regardless of herbicide system or cultivar and was transient. Excellent (> 90%) control of common lambsquarters, common ragweed, and Ipomoea species, including entireleaf, ivyleaf, pitted and tall morningglories, jimsonweed, prickly sida, and velvetleaf, was achieved with systems containing bromoxynil, glyphosate, and pyrithiobac early postemergence (EPOST). Glyphosate systems provided better and more consistent control of fall panicum and large crabgrass than bromoxynil and pyrithiobac systems. Bromoxynil and pyrithiobac EPOST did not control sicklepod unless applied in mixture with MSMA and followed by (fb) a late postemergence-directed (LAYBY) treatment of prometryn plus MSMA. Palmer amaranth was controlled (> 90%) with all glyphosate and pyrithiobac systems and with the bromoxynil system that included a broadcast soil-applied herbicide treatment. Bromoxynil systems without a broadcast soil-applied herbicide treatment controlled Palmer amaranth 87% or less. Herbicide systems that included glyphosate EPOST controlled sicklepod with or without a soil-applied herbicide treatment. The highest yielding cotton included all the glyphosate systems and bromoxynil systems that contained a soil-applied herbicide treatment. Nontransgenic systems that included a soil-applied herbicide treatment yielded less than a system with soil-applied treatment plus glyphosate EPOST. Net returns from glyphosate systems were generally higher than net returns from bromoxynil or pyrithiobac systems.

Weed management is evolving to include cultural tactics that reduce weed populations. This study near Brookings, SD, evaluated the effect of crop sequence and tillage on seedling emergence of common sunflower across years. In the third and fourth years of the study, seedling density was sevenfold greater after 2 yr of soybean with tillage compared with a 2-yr sequence of canola and winter wheat with no-till. Apparently, canola and winter wheat enhanced the natural decline of common sunflower seed density in soil, leading to fewer seedlings in following years. In the first year of the study, tillage increased seedling emergence of common sunflower compared with no-till; seedlings rarely emerged in canola or winter wheat. Most seedlings of common sunflower emerged in May, with more than 90% of seedlings emerging between May 7 and June 4. Cool-season crops grown with no-till may affect weed seed survival in soil in the western Corn Belt.

Diclosulam is generally applied either PPI or PRE to peanut to control certain broadleaf weeds and suppress sedges. Research was conducted to determine efficacy and peanut response to POST applications of diclosulam at 9, 13, 18, and 27 g ai/ha. Efficacy of diclosulam was affected by application rate and environment. Common ragweed control ranged from 60 to 100%, entireleaf morningglory control from 56 to 100%, marestail control from 78 to 85%, and nodding spurge from 50 to 97%. Smooth pigweed and common lambsquarters were both controlled less than 35%. Diclosulam controlled yellow nutsedge and eclipta less than 70 and 80%, respectively. In separate experiments, diclosulam and imazapic controlled dogfennel more effectively than acifluorfen, bentazon, imazethapyr, lactofen, paraquat, or 2,4-DB. Visual estimates of peanut injury were 15% or less for all rates during both years. Peanut yield ranged from 3,340 to 3,730 kg/ha in 2002 and 5,230 to 5,820 kg/ha in 2003. Foliar injury and peanut pod yield were influenced by diclosulam rate, although no clear relation was evident. Cultivar and diclosulam rate did not interact with respect to visual injury or pod yield.

Canada thistle is a serious weed of many crop, rangeland, pasture, and natural areas throughout North America. Aminopyralid is a new pyridine carboxylic acid herbicide that has activity on Canada thistle at lower use rates than current standard treatments. The objectives of this study were to compare aminopyralid efficacy, rates, and application timing with several commercial standards for Canada thistle control. Studies were conducted across the Great Plains at ten locations, which encompassed a wide range of environments. Aminopyralid provided Canada thistle control comparable to picloram, picloram + 2,4-D amine, and clopyralid and better control than clopyralid + 2,4-D amine, dicamba, dicamba + 2,4-D amine and dicamba + diflufenzopyr. Canada thistle control was similar when aminopyralid was applied between 0.08 and 0.11 kg ai/ha and application timing (spring bolting vs. fall rosette/regrowth) did not strongly influence control 1 yr after treatment (YAT). Aminopyralid provided effective Canada thistle control at lower use rates than current commercial standards and might be useful in areas where herbicides such as picloram and clopyralid are not recommended for use.

Planting date of soybean may be one factor that affects the crop's ability to compete with weeds. Field experiments were conducted over 3 yr at two locations in Illinois to determine whether planting date affects optimal weed management strategies and the critical time of weed removal (CTWR) in glyphosate-resistant soybean. Across planting dates, a PRE application of metolachlor plus metribuzin followed by a single glyphosate application at a 10- or 20-cm weed height at Monmouth or at a 20-cm weed height at Urbana was effective at protecting yield. At Monmouth, higher yields occurred with sequential glyphosate applications than with a single application in the early planting in 2 yr when weeds were removed at a height of 10 cm. Across planting dates, highest yields at Monmouth occurred with a single glyphosate application when weeds were 20 to 30 cm tall. At Urbana, the CTWR was not affected by planting date and occurred between 176 and 290 growing-degree days (GDD) after planting, corresponding to the V1 to V2 stage of soybean development and a weed height of 11 to 19 cm. Applying glyphosate near the CTWR at Urbana (10-cm weed height) required a sequential application to prevent yield loss with early and middle planting dates in 1 of 3 yr. Overall, planting date did not affect optimal weed management strategies at either location.

Experiments were conducted at Minlaton on the Yorke Peninsula of South Australia in 2004 and 2005 to study the effect of four different seeding systems and dinitroaniline herbicides on the seedling emergence and growth of rigid ryegrass in wheat. The seeding systems were low soil-disturbance discs (DayBreak and K-Hart) and high soil-disturbance tines (narrow point and Ribbon seeder); and the herbicides were oryzalin, pendimethalin, and trifluralin at rate of 0.72 kg ai/ha. The total seedling emergence of rigid ryegrass was higher in nontreated plots planted with the tines compared with the discs. In general, oryzalin was the least-effective herbicide in controlling emergence of rigid ryegrass. All herbicides were more effective in reducing the number of plants, spikes, dry matter, and seed production of rigid ryegrass in combination with tines than with discs. However, in the absence of herbicides, plant and spike numbers, plant dry weight, and seed production of rigid ryegrass were significantly lower where discs were used to sow, rather than tines. In the absence of herbicide, rigid ryegrass was less competitive with wheat under the disc-sown systems. The response of grain yield to herbicides was greater under the tine-sown systems than the disc-sown systems.

Grass weeds are a major problem in winter wheat fields in the Pacific Northwest (PNW). Control of these weeds is now enhanced with the use of imazamox resistant winter wheat cultivars, which have been rapidly adopted by wheat growers. However, the effect of spray rate and timing on crop injury and agronomic traits of wheat cultivars with different genetic backgrounds has not been adequately evaluated. Thus, experiments were conducted near Moscow and Genesee, ID in the 2003–2004 and 2004–2005 growing seasons to evaluate the effect of imazamox on four resistant cultivars and seven resistant breeding lines. Wheat plants were treated at the 3- to 5-leaf stage and the 3- to 7-tiller stage with 45 and 90 g ai/ha of imazamox. Visible crop injury was evaluated from 14 to 35 d after treatment (DAT). Heading date, plant height, grain yield and test weight, and end-use grain quality also were measured. The cultivar by treatment interaction was significant at 21 DAT, caused by a differential response of wheat lines to imazamox treatment. This interaction also was significant for plant height and grain yield. Although cultivars and breeding lines responded differently to imazamox treatment, two lines consistently showed the least levels (3 to 8%) of crop injury, with no reductions in plant height or grain yield following imazamox application. Orthogonal contrasts of visible crop injury at 21 DAT showed that the 2× imazamox rate caused more crop injury (12%) than the 1× rate (7%). The 2× rate of imazamox reduced plant height 1%, grain yield 8%, test weight 1%, and percent flour yield 1%. All other traits were not affected by application of imazamox. Application timing only minimally affected crop injury, and had no effect on agronomic or end-use quality traits.

Reducing herbicide rates can reduce production costs and the potential for carryover injury in subsequent crops, but may also compromise residual weed control. When used at the highest recommended rates (0.35 kg ai/ha), fomesafen may cause carryover injury on sweet corn. One of the most valuable attributes of fomesafen use in snap and dry beans is control of common ragweed. Field experiments were conducted in 1999, 2000, and 2002 to investigate both the residual ragweed control from fomesafen at 0.09, 0.18, and 0.36 kg ai/ha and the potential for a second application to extend the duration of residual control, while reducing the total amount applied per season. Results were significantly affected by weather conditions. In a very wet year (2000), with the greatest ragweed pressure, a single application of fomesafen at 0.20 kg/ha was predicted to provide at least 90% control of ragweed throughout snap and dry bean seasons. In the driest year (1999), 0.09 kg ai/ha provided greater than 90% control for the same period. Regardless of whether a single or double application was made, the total amount of fomesafen required per season was less than the manufacturer's recommended rate. Compared with making a single application, two low-rate applications did not reduce the total fomesafen rate required per season. To help insure at least 90% control of ragweed throughout the snap and dry bean seasons a grower should apply 0.20 kg ai/ha early in the season. Lower rates may be used, but in wet seasons, a second application may be needed to prevent yield loss or interference of ragweed with mechanical harvesting.
