The responses of neurons in areas V1 (17) and V2 (18) of anesthetized and paralyzed rhesus monkeys and cats were recorded while presenting a set of computer-generated visual stimuli that varied in pattern, texture, luminance, and contrast. We find that a class of extrastriate cortical cells in cats and monkeys can signal the presence of boundaries regardless of the cue or cues that define the boundaries. These cue-invariant (CI) cells were rare in area V1 but easily found in V2. CI cortical cells responded more strongly to more salient boundaries regardless of the cue defining the boundaries. Many CI cortical cells responded to illusory contours and exhibited the same degree of orientation and direction selectivity when tested with boundaries defined by different cues. These cells have significant computational power inherent in their receptive fields since they were able to generalize across stimuli and integrate multiple cues simultaneously in order to signal boundaries. Cells in higher order cortical areas such as MT (Albright, 1992), MST (Geesaman & Anderson, 1996), and IT (Sary et al., 1993) have previously been reported to respond in a cue invariant fashion. The present results suggest that the ability to respond to boundaries in a cue-invariant manner originates at relatively early stages of cortical processing.

Action potentials of single perigeniculate (PGN) cells and relay cells of the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN) with topographically matched or at least partially overlapping receptive fields (RF) were simultaneously recorded in the anesthetized and paralyzed cat during visual stimulation with moving gratings or flashing light spots of different size. In many cases, PGN cells showed an activity pattern which appeared like a mirror image of distinct periods of dLGN activity. Flashing spots evoked transient volleys of activity in PGN cells which increased in strength and shortened in latency with increasing size of the stimulus. These responses were temporally matched with inhibitory phases in the early part of visual responses in the dLGN. The spatio-temporal properties of the RFs were established by reverse correlation of the spike activity with the spatially random presentation of bright and dark spots within an array of 20 × 20 positions. Anticorrelated firing patterns of such kind could also be elicited as interocular inhibition with stimulation of the perigeniculate RF in the nondominant eye. Inversely correlated changes in spontaneous and visually induced activity were also visible during spontaneous changes in EEG pattern. With increasing synchronization of the EEG (predominance of delta-waves) the strength of geniculate visual responses declined while maintained perigeniculate activity increased. A weakened interocular and monocular inhibition of dLGN relay cells during visual stimulation of PGN RFs could be achieved with local reversible inactivation of PGN areas topographically matched with the dLGN recording sites. The results indicate that the PGN contributes to the state-dependent control of retino-geniculate transmission and to the monocular and interocular inhibitory processes that shape the visual responses in the dLGN.

The phosphoinositide (PI) intracellular signaling pathway, which triggers Ca2+ release from intracellular stores, appears to be a central feature of phototransduction in most invertebrate species studied. Procedures designed to inhibit PI-pathway reactions cause suppression of excitation to dim lights. However, in Limulus photoreceptors, responses to bright stimuli are in fact enhanced by some of these procedures, suggesting that PI metabolism is not obligatory for light-induced excitation. Other studies, however, suggest that Ca2+ release is obligatory for excitation. We studied this issue by examining the effects of PI-pathway inhibitor, Li+, on electrophysiological responses to light in Limulus photoreceptors. Li+ is reported to cause depletion of intracellular PI-pathway intermediate, inositol; and it offers the pharmacological advantage that its block can be bypassed by introducing exogenous inositol. Introduction of Li+ caused a very slowly developing but complete suppression of responses to dim stimuli. In contrast, Li+ caused a rapidly developing but partial suppression of responses to bright stimuli. Li+-induced suppression was reversed by exogenous introduction of inositol. In addition, inositol prevented Li+-induced suppression of excitation. Li+ enhanced light adaptation (light-induced desensitization) but slowed response deactivation, indicating a difference in the processes underlying these phenomena. Li+ slowed dark adaptation, the recovery of sensitivity following light adaptation. All of these effects were prevented or rescued by extracellularly applied inositol, suggesting the presence of a transmembrane inositol transport system. The overall results suggest that PI-dependent signaling is central and obligatory for excitation in Limulus, at least for responses to dim to moderate illumination. The failure of Li+ to suppress bright light-induced excitation completely may be due to a failure of Li+ to block PI metabolism completely, as in other systems; however, it may point to a parallel, PI-independent excitation pathway possessing very low light sensitivity when PI metabolism is inhibited.

To define brain regions involved in feature extraction or elementary form perception, regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) was measured using positron emission tomography (PET) in subjects viewing two classes of achromatic textures. Textures composed of local features (e.g. extended contours and rectangular blocks) produced activation or increased rCBF along the occipitotemporal pathway relative to textures with the same mean luminance, contrast, and spatial-frequency content but lacking organized form elements or local features. Significant activation was observed in striate, extrastriate, lingual, and fusiform cortices as well as the hippocampus and brain stem. On a scan-by-scan basis, increases in rCBF shifted from the occipitotemporal visual cortices to medial temporal (hippocampus) and frontal lobes with increased exposure to only those textures containing local features. These results suggest that local feature extraction occurs throughout the occipitotemporal (ventral) pathway during extended exposure to visually salient stimuli, and may indicate the presence of similar receptive-field mechanisms in both occipital and temporal visual areas of the human brain.

Nitric oxide (NO) acts as a neuronal messenger which activates soluble guanylyl cyclase (SGC) in neighboring cells and produces a wide range of physiological effects in the central nervous system (CNS). Using immunocytochemical and histochemical stains, we have characterized the NO/SGC system in the rabbit retina and to a lesser extent, in monkey retina. Based on staining patterns observed with an antibody to nitric oxide synthase (NOS) type I and a histochemical marker for NADPH diaphorase, a metabolic intermediate required for NOS activity, three major classes of neurons appear to generate NO in the rabbit retina. These include two subclasses of sparsely distributed wide field amacrine cells, rod and cone photoreceptors, and a subpopulation of ganglion cells. Equivalent cell populations were labled in monkey retina. An antibody to SGC (tested only in rabbit retina), labeled large arrays of cone photoreceptors in the outer nuclear layer, both amacrine and bipolar cells in the inner nuclear layer (INL), as well as populations of neurons in the ganglion cell layer. These data suggest that the ability to generate NO is restricted to relatively few neurons in the inner retina and to photoreceptor cells in the outer retina; while presumptive target cells, containing pools of SGC, are widespread and form contiguous fields across the inner and outer nuclear layers (ONL) as well as the ganglion cell layer.

Photocurrents from isolated rods of adults and sub-adults of three species of amphibians, Rana pipiens, Ambystoma tigrinum, and Xenopus laevis, were measured with suction pipette electrodes. The intensity for a half-maximal response was 0.91 ± 0.48 photons μm−2 flash−1 (mean ± s.d., 10-ms flashes) for Rana, 0.92 ± 0.44 for Ambystoma, and 6.14 ± 1.33 for Xenopus. The mean number of photoisomerizations at half-saturation was 22 ± 12 for Rana, 50 ± 24 for Ambystoma, and 221 ± 48 for Xenopus. The photocurrent per photoisomerization is several times smaller in Xenopus rods than in the other two species. Spectral sensitivity was measured from 277–737 nm with light polarized both parallel and perpendicular to the planes of the membrane disks. Dichroism fell in the near UV and was absent in the region of absorption by tryptophan and tyrosine. Maximum sensitivity of Rana was at 503.9 ± 2.6 nm (n = 86), and of Ambystoma, 505.8 ± 1.8 nm (n = 24). Animals from these same batches that were sampled by HPLC had no 3-dehydroretinal (retinal2). Xenopus containing about 94% retinal2 and 6% retinal1 had λmax at 519.3 ± 2.7 nm (n = 11). Spectral position of the β-band, estimated by the method of Stavenga et al. (1993), appears to be at longer wavelengths in amphibian photoreceptors than in other vertebrates. Fits of log sensitivity to a normalized-frequency template that tracks the long-wavelength tail of the α-band (Lamb, 1995) show that the rod pigments of Rana and Ambystoma are slightly narrower than those found in the photoreceptors of fish and mammals.

A network model of disparity estimation was developed based on disparity-selective neurons, such as those found in the early stages of processing in the visual cortex. The model accurately estimated multiple disparities in regions, which may be caused by transparency or occlusion. The selective integration of reliable local estimates enabled the network to generate accurate disparity estimates on normal and transparent random-dot stereograms. The model was consistent with human psychophysical results on the effects of spatial-frequency filtering on disparity sensitivity. The responses of neurons in macaque area V2 to random-dot stereograms are consistent with the prediction of the model that a subset of neurons responsible for disparity selection should be sensitive to disparity gradients.

The two major excitatory synapses onto ON–OFF directionally selective (DS) ganglion cells of the rabbit retina appear to be nicotinic cholinergic and NMDA glutamatergic. Blockade of either of these synapses with antagonists does not eliminate directional selectivity. This suggests that these synapses may have complementary roles in the computation of the direction of motion. To test this hypothesis, quantitative features of the DS cell excitatory pathways were determined by collecting responses, under nicotinic and/or NMDA blockade, to a sweeping bar, hyperacute apparent motions, or a drifting sinusoidal grating. Sweeping bar responses were reduced, but directional selectivity not eliminated, by blockade of either excitatory path, as previously shown (Cohen & Miller, 1995; Kittila & Massey, 1997). However, residual responses under combined blockades were not statistically significantly DS. NMDA blockade reduced responses more than nicotinic blockade for each protocol, and shifted hyperacute motion thresholds to higher values. This supported the notion that glutamate provides the main excitatory drive to DS cells, that is, the one responsible for contrast sensitivity. In turn, nicotinic, but not NMDA blockade eliminated directional selectivity to a drifting low spatial-frequency sinusoidal grating in these cells. This suggested that acetylcholine (ACh) is the main excitatory input with regards to directional selectivity for some textured stimuli, that is, those with multiple peaks in their spatial luminance profile. Moreover, nicotinic blockade raised the low temporal-frequency cutoff of the grating responses, consistent with the proposal that preferred-direction facilitation, which is temporally sustained, is dependent on the cholinergic input. These different properties of the NMDA and nicotinic pathways are consistent with a recently proposed two-asymmetric-pathways model of directional selectivity.

Noise recorded in visual neurons, or variability in psychophysical experiments, may be quantified in terms of quantal fluctuations from an “equivalent” steady illumination. The conversion requires assumptions concerning how photon signals are pooled in space and time, i.e. how to pass from light fluxes to numbers of photon events relevant to the Poisson statistics describing signal/noise. It is usual to approximate real weighting profiles for the integration of photon events in space and time (the sensitivity distribution of the receptive field [RF] and the waveform of the impulse response [IR]) by sharp-bordered apertures of “complete,” equal-weight summation of events. Apertures based on signal-equivalence cannot provide noise-equivalence, however, because greater numbers of events summed with smaller weights (as in reality) have lower variances than smaller numbers summed with full weight. Thus sharp-bordered apertures are necessarily smaller if defined for noise- than for signal-equivalence. We here consider the difference for some commonly encountered RF and IR profiles. Summation areas, expressed as numbers of photoreceptors (cones or rods) contributing with equal weight, are denoted NS for signal and NN for noise; sharply delimited summation times are correspondingly denoted tS and tN. We show that the relation in space is NN = 0.5NS for the Gaussian distribution (e.g. for the RF center mechanism of retinal ganglion cells). For a photoreceptor in an electrically coupled network the difference is even larger, e.g., for rods in the toad retina NN = 0.2NS (NS = 13.7 rods and NN = 2.8 rods). In time, the relation is tN ≈ 0.7tS for realistic quantal response waveforms of photoreceptors. The surround input in a difference-of-Gaussians RF may either decrease or increase total noise, depending on the degree of correlation of center and surround noise. We introduce a third useful definition of sharp-bordered summation apertures: one that provides the same signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for large-long stimuli as the real integration profiles. The SNR-equivalent summation area is N* = NS 2/NN and summation time t* = tS2/tN.

Previous physiological studies have shown that serotonin (5-HT) reciprocally modulates ON and OFF channels in the mammalian retina. This study was undertaken to determine if the serotoninergic system is exclusively associated with the rod pathway. We tested drugs specific to 5-HT3 receptor, a serotonin-gated ion channel, in both dark- and light-adapted retina. Consistent with previous studies, we demonstrated that 5-HT3 receptors modulate the light-evoked responses of ganglion cells in the dark-adapted state. Moreover, we have extended these prior studies and shown that activation of the 5-HT3 receptor is capable of completely blocking the light-evoked response of OFF-center cells whereas inactivation of the 5-HT3 receptor is capable of completely blocking the light-evoked responses of ON-center cells. In contrast, in light-adapted retinae, serotonin agents failed to have any effect on retinal processing. These data suggest that the serotoninergic system in retina is (1) specifically associated with rod-related pathways; and (2) exerts a powerful modulatory force over information transfer in the retina. Together these observations suggests that serotonin plays an important physiological role in modulating retinal processing.

First-order (Fourier) motion consists of stable spatiotemporal luminance variations. Second-order (non-Fourier) motion consists instead of spatiotemporal modulation of contrast, flicker, or spatial frequency. In spite of extensive psychophysical and computational analysis of the nature and relationship of these two types of motion, it remains unclear whether they are detected by the same mechanism or whether separate mechanisms are involved. Here we report the selective impairment of first-order motion, on a range of local and global motion tasks, in the contralateral visual hemifield of a patient with unilateral brain damage centered on putative visual areas V2 and V3 in the medial part of the occipital lobe. His perception of second-order motion was unimpaired. As his disorder is the obverse of that reported after damage in the vicinity of human visual area MT (V5), the results support models of motion processing in which first- and second-order motion are, at least in part, computed separately at the extrastriate cortical level.

It is often assumed that the ultimate goal of a motion-detection system is to faithfully represent the time-dependent velocity of a moving stimulus. This assumption, however, may be an arbitrary standard since the requirements for a motion-detection system depend on the task that is to be solved. In the context of optomotor course stabilization, the performance of a motion-sensitive neuron in the fly's optomotor pathway and of a hypothetical velocity sensor are compared for stimuli as are characteristic of a normal behavioral situation in which the actions and reactions of the animal directly affect its visual input. On average, tethered flies flying in a flight simulator are able to compensate to a large extent the retinal image displacements as are induced by an external disturbance of their flight course. The retinal image motion experienced by the fly under these behavioral closed-loop conditions was replayed in subsequent electrophysiological experiments to the animal while the activity of an identified neuron in the motion pathway was recorded. The velocity fluctuations as well as the corresponding neuronal signals were analyzed with a statistical approach taken from signal-detection theory. An observer scrutinizing either signal performs almost equally well in detecting the external disturbance.

We serendipitously discovered that the preferred-direction responses of ON–OFF directionally selective (DS) ganglion cells in the rabbit retina fall as a function of contrast when the contrast of a moving bar exceeds about 100%. Null-direction responses did not fall for contrasts up to 400%. Because the non-monotonic (rise-then-fall) behavior as a function of contrast occurred only for preferred-direction responses, it must depend on the mechanism of directional selectivity. It became thus of interest to investigate how this non-monotonicity depends on the major synapses involved in directional selectivity. Blockades of nicotinic acetylcholine (ACh) and NMDA glutamate receptors reduced responses without eliminating preferred-response non-monotonicity. Blocking GABAergic inhibition, however, did eliminate non-monotonicity. These results pose a difficult puzzle, since in the accompanying paper (Grzywacz et al., 1998), we showed that residual responses under combined nicotinic and NMDA blockades are not statistically significantly directionally selective. How is it possible that null-direction GABAergic inhibition affects non-nicotinic-non-NMDA residual responses without generating directional selectivity? This may happen if there exists an asymmetric GABAergic input to distal dendrites of the DS cell while the excitatory, non-nicotinic-non-NMDA input is to proximal dendrites. In support of this hypothesis, bath-applied GABA reduces responses to exogenous ACh under synaptic block, providing for the first time in the rabbit's retina, direct evidence of GABA receptors on DS cells.

Mammalian horizontal cells are believed to be GABAergic because, in most species, they contain both GABA and glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD), and their terminals are presynaptic to GABA receptors. In adult rabbit, however, GABA and GAD immunoreactivity have not been consistently demonstrated in horizontal cells, casting doubts on the assumption that they too are GABAergic. Here we demonstrate that all rabbit horizontal cell terminals—dendritic terminals of type A, and both dendritic and axonal terminals of type B—immunostain for one isoform of GAD, GAD67. In addition, we show that type A horizontal cell somas and primary dendrites in the visual streak (identified by their immunoreactivity to calbindin) are immunoreactive for the other GAD isoform, GAD65. Double-labeling experiments for GAD65 and GABA reveal that every cell that stains for GAD65 also stains for GABA. The presence of GAD67 in horizontal cell terminals suggests that rabbit horizontal cells are GABAergic. The segregation of the two GAD isoforms to different cell compartments suggests that GABA is released at different sites, possibly by two different mechanisms.

The presence of a commissure connecting the two superior colliculi suggests they do not act independently, but the function of the tectotectal connection has never been firmly identified. To develop a better understanding of this commissural system, the present study determined the distribution and morphology of tectotectal neurons in the cat and macaque monkey, two animals with well-studied, but different orienting strategies. First, we compared the distribution of tectotectal cells retrogradely labeled following WGA-HRP injections into the contralateral superior colliculus. In monkeys, labeled tectotectal cells were found in all layers, but were concentrated in the intermediate gray layer (75%), particularly dorsally, and the adjacent optic layer (12%). Tectotectal cells were distributed throughout nearly the entire rostrocaudal extent of the colliculus. In cats, tectotectal cells were found in all the layers beneath the superficial gray, but the intermediate gray layer contained the greatest concentration (56%). Labeled cells were almost exclusively located in the rostral half of the cat superior colliculus, in contrast to the monkey distribution. In the context of the representation of visuomotor space in the colliculus, the distribution of monkey and cat tectotectal cells suggests a correspondence with oculomotor range. So these neurons may be involved in directing orienting movements performed within the oculomotor range. The somatodendritic morphology of tectotectal cells in these two species was revealed by homogeneous retrograde labeling from injections of biocytin or biotinylated dextran amine into the contralateral colliculus. The cell classes contributing to this pathway are fairly consistent across the two species. A variety of neuronal morphologies were observed, so there is no single tectotectal cell type. Instead, cell types similar to those found in each layer, excepting the largest neurons, were present among tectotectal cells. This suggests that a sample of each layer's output is sent to the contralateral colliculus.

Connections of the thalamo-hyperstriatal system of hatchling chicks were investigated using multiple injections of cholera toxin B subunit (CTb) in the wulst. In the diencephalon, cells with CTb-like immunoreactivity (CTb-LI) were seen bilaterally in n. dorsolateralis anterior thalami, pars lateralis dorsalis and ventralis, n. dorsolateralis anterior thalami, pars magnocellularis, and pars lateralis rostralis. Within this complex, more CTb-LI cells were observed in the ventral portions of the ipsilateral side, whereas more labeled cells were found in the dorsolateral portions of the contralateral side. Moreover, CTb-LI cells were seen bilaterally in n. superficialis magnocellularis. In the nonvisual thalamic structures, numerous CTb-LI cells were seen in n. dorsolateralis anterior thalami, pars medialis and n. dorsolateralis posterior thalami. In the ventral thalamus, intense CTb-LI fibers/terminals were present in the external half of the external laminae of n. geniculatus lateralis, pars ventralis. Moderate to minor concentrations of fibrous labeling were found in n. intercalatus thalami and n. ventrolateral thalami. Moreover, efferent projections of the wulst were evident in the most ventral half of the optic tectum and the pretectal areas. The latter included n. pretectalis medialis, n. spiriformis medialis, n. principalis precommissuralis, n. lentiformis mesencephali, pars magnocellularis, and n. superficialis synecephali. Also, CTb-LI fibers were seen in n. basal optic root. The present study provides strong evidence that neuronal connections of the thalamo-hyperstriatal system are well established by the time of hatching. Additionally, efferent projections from the wulst to the diencephalic, mesencephalic, and pretectal structures are evident.

The maintained discharge of neurons along the early visual pathway in mammals constitutes the “noise” from which the visual signal must be discriminated. The statistics of this background noise in cat retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) have been shown to conform to that of a gamma-distributed renewal process (Kuffler et al., 1957; Barlow & Levick, 1969), and power spectrum analysis reveals that this property allows for low noise levels at the temporal-frequency range (0–10 Hz) most important for visual performance (Troy & Robson, 1992). In this study, we compare the statistics of the maintained discharge of cat lateral geniculate neurons with those of its RGC input by simultaneous recordings of spikes and S-potentials in single relay cells of the cat lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN). We demonstrate that, during primarily tonic spiking activity, the LGN maintained discharge preserves the renewal process statistics of its RGC input and also generates relatively little noise at the temporal frequencies important for vision. However, during burst spiking activity, the renewal process model breaks down and increased noise is generated at 2–10 Hz. This suggests that optimization of the visual signal/noise ratio is not a prime consideration in the behavioral states associated with bursting activity in the LGN. The occurrence of burst spikes in LGN relay cells is dependent on the activity of T-type calcium channels in their plasma membranes (Jahnsen & Llinas, 1984a,b). We show that a computational model of LGN relay cells that incorporates T-channel kinetics (Mukherjee & Kaplan, 1995) can correctly simulate LGN maintained discharge statistics during both tonic and bursty firing conditions, and indicates an essential role for this ion channel in determining the dynamic noise properties of the LGN. We also use the computational model to predict how the burstiness of the LGN maintained discharge is affected by the statistics of its RGC input.

We studied the visuomotor properties of 645 neurons in area 6 of five cats trained in oculomotor tasks. The area we recorded from corresponds well with territories believed to contain the feline homologue of the frontal eye fields observed in primates. Despite an expectation that cells with pre-saccadic activity would be common, only a small fraction (∼5%) of the cells displayed activity that could be linked to subsequent saccadic eye movements. These pre-motor cells appeared to be distributed over a broad region of cortex mixed in with other cell types. As in primates, saccade-related activity tended to occur only during “purposeful” saccades. At least 30% (208/645) of the neurons were visual, with many of these cells possessing huge receptive fields that appeared to include the entire contralateral visual field. Visual responsiveness was generally attenuated by fixation during the oculomotor tasks. Although attentional mechanisms may play a role in this attenuation, this cortical area also exhibits powerful lateral interactions in which spatially displaced visual stimuli suppress each other. Most cells, visually responsive or not, were affected by fixation. Nearly equal proportions of cells showed increases or decreases in activity during fixation. For many of the cells affected by fixation, the source of this modulation appears to reflect cognitive, rather than sensory or motor processes. This included cells that showed anticipatory activity, and cells that responded to the reward only when it was presented in the context of the task. Based on the paucity of pre-saccadic neurons, it would be difficult to conclude that this region of cortex in the cat is homologous to the frontal eye fields of the monkey. However, when considered in the context of differences in the oculomotor habits of these two animals, we believe the homology fits. In addition to pre-motor neurons, the properties of several other cell types found in this area could contribute to the control of gaze.

Although differences in visual pigments between developmental stages of the European eel are well known, the expected differences in spectral sensitivity have not been demonstrated at the electrophysiological level. In fact, one past electroretinographic study led to the conclusion that in eels there is no change in scotopic sensitivity, with increasing sexual maturity. In the present experiments, electroretinograms (ERGs) were recorded from in situ eyecups of immobilized eels Anguilla anguilla (L.) caught in coastal running waters. It was shown that the ERG b-wave is as good an indicator of spectral sensitivity as the unmasked late receptor potential (LRP) which directly reflects the responsiveness of photoreceptors. Complete spectral-sensitivity curves, based on b-wave thresholds and on thresholds of LRP subsequently isolated by means of sodium iodate, have been obtained in the same eel. Using fitted amplitude-log intensity functions for threshold calculation, and two models for computer-assisted fitting of spectral-sensitivity curves, significant differences in λmax were found between yellow and silver developmental stages of the eel, identified by ocular index measurements.

The role of cortical area V4 in complex shape discriminations was studied by testing the effects of V4 lesions in macaques on the ability to visually discriminate between images of three-dimensional (3D) objects from different viewpoints. Stimuli were presented in pairs in the lower left or lower right visual field quadrants about 4 deg from the fovea, and the monkeys judged on each trial whether the two views were of the same or of different objects. Object similarity was varied to determine a threshold shape difference. V4 lesions caused profound, retinotopic, and apparently permanent disruptions of discrimination, regardless of whether the images represented single or multiple viewpoints. In V4 lesioned portions of the visual field, monkeys could discriminate objects only when they differed much more grossly in shape than was true in control locations. These effects of the lesion were virtually identical for discriminations that had been learned before lesions were placed and for those learned afterwards. As in previous studies, V4 lesions elevated contrast thresholds by approximately a factor of two, but control observations showed that this was not the basis of the disruption of shape discrimination. Manipulation of cues to shape showed that in control locations, monkeys maintained excellent shape discrimination despite a variety of stimulus alterations, whereas in V4 lesioned areas their performance was easily disrupted. This finding suggests that V4 may support visual shape discriminations by facilitating the use of multiple visual cues. However, the fact that single-viewpoint and multiple-viewpoint discriminations were similarly affected indicates that the disruption was not specific to 3D shape discrimination, but may apply to a variety of subtle discriminations.
