In the present study, we examined the stability of one measure of emotion, the emotion-modulated acoustic startle response, in an undergraduate sample. Using the acoustic startle paradigm on two different occasions, we measured stability of affective modulation of the startle response during and following the presentation of pictures selected to be of positive, negative, or neutral emotional valence. The two assessments were separated by 4 weeks. Two groups of subjects were compared: one group that viewed the same pictures at each assessment and a second group that viewed different pictures at the second assessment. We found that viewing different pictures at two assessments separated by 4 weeks yielded moderate stability of the emotion modulation of startle magnitude, whereas subjects who viewed the same pictures at both assessments showed poor stability. Furthermore, this difference was due to the stability of responses to high versus low arousal pictures, not to differences in valence.

Conditioned inhibition of classical conditioning was investigated with the startle reflex and the skin conductance response (SCR) in humans using a serial presentation of the conditioned inhibitor (X) and of the conditioned stimulus (CS). The unconditioned stimulus (US) was a shock. During conditioning, participants were presented with two different reinforced CS (A, B) and with X preceding A (noted X → A). During X → A, A was not reinforced with the US. During the summation test, B, X → B, and Y → B were presented (Y was a new stimulus that tested the specificity of the inhibitory properties of X). B was not reinforced during the summation test. A, B, X, and Y were lights of different colors. Participants were divided into a low and a high anxious group based on the TPQ (C.R. Cloninger, 1987). In the low anxious group, conditioned startle potentiation and SCR responses to A were inhibited when X preceded A (noted AXA). This differential responding to A and AXA emerged earlier with the SCR than with startle. During the summation test, the inhibitory properties of X did not transfer to B. In the high anxious group, there was only a differential SCR to A and AXA. X did not inhibit startle potentiation to A.

In this study, we examined changes in the event-related potential (ERP) to stimuli with and without reproductive significance occurring during the menstrual cycle. Eleven spontaneously cycling women were tested during three menstrual phases (menses, ovulatory phase, luteal phase) differing in plasma concentrations of gonadal hormones. ERPs were recorded while subjects were presented with slides showing pictures from four different stimulus categories (sexual stimuli, babies, people occupied with body care, ordinary people). Slides were presented randomly in the context of two tasks, requiring either affective processing (i.e., to judge the emotional content of a slide as positive, neutral, or negative) or structural processing (i.e., to estimate the number of parallel thin lines inserted in each picture). Menstrual phase primarily affected a late positive component (LPC) peaking 550–600 ms poststimulus. The effects were as follows: (i) During the ovulatory phase, amplitude of the LPC to sexual stimuli was larger than that evoked by the other stimulus categories. (ii) This relationship was not apparent during the other menstrual phases or (iii) during the ovulatory phase when the task required structural processing. The ovulatory increase in LPC positivity to sexual stimuli suggests a greater valence of these stimuli during a phase of increased sexual desire. The data indicate a specific effect of the menstrual cycle on the processing of sexual stimuli that increases with deeper emotional processing.

This study investigated the functional significance of the N2 response to novel stimuli. In one condition, background, target, and deviant stimuli were simple geometric figures. In a second condition, all stimulus types were unfamiliar/unusual figures. In a third condition, background and target stimuli were unusual figures and deviant stimuli were simple shapes. Unusual figures, whether they were deviant, target, or background stimuli, evoked larger N2 responses than their simple, familiar counterparts. N2 elicited by an unusual background stimulus was larger than that evoked by simple, deviant stimuli, a pattern opposite that exhibited by the subsequent P3. Deviance from immediate context had limited influence over N2 amplitude. The results suggest that novelty N2 and novelty P3 reflect the processing of different aspects of “novel” visual stimuli. The novelty P3 is particularly sensitive to deviation from immediate context. In contrast, the novelty N2 is sensitive to deviation from long-term context that renders a stimulus unfamiliar and difficult to encode.

A baroreflex mechanism may explain hypertensive hypoalgesia. At rest, arterial baroreceptors are stimulated during the systolic upstroke of the pressure pulse wave. This study examined the effects of naturally occurring variations in baroreceptor activity during the cardiac cycle on an objective measure of pain, the nociceptive flexion reflex (NFR). Two interleaved up–down staircase procedures determined separate NFR thresholds during systole and diastole in 36 healthy, normotensive young adults. On odd-numbered trials, the sural nerve was stimulated electrocutaneously at R + 300 ms whereas on even-numbered trials, stimulation was delivered at R + 600 ms. The NFR threshold was higher at R + 300 ms than R + 600 ms. In contrast, stimulus intensity ratings did not differ between R + 300 ms and R + 600 ms. Stimulation of baroreceptors by natural increases in blood pressure during the systolic phase of the cardiac cycle was associated with dampened nociception.

P300 latency is commonly thought to provide a chronometric index of the duration of perceptual processing. Because the evidence in favor of this assumption is controversial, we examined whether P300 latency is influenced by perceptual processes, response selection, and by motoric processes in two experiments using a two-choice spatial stimulus-response compatibility (SRC) task. Both experiments revealed additive effects of perceptual difficulty with spatial SRC in reaction time and P300 latency. In addition, Experiment 2 showed that P300 latency measured in average waveforms is insensitive to motoric processes. The influence of spatial SRC on P300 latency disagrees with the view that P300 latency is sensitive only to stimulus evaluation processes. However, P300 latency may be used to discriminate between influences on premotoric and motoric processing stages. A response conflict account for the SRC effect on P300 latency is suggested.

During listening to a musical piece, unexpected harmonies may evoke brain responses that are reflected electrically as an early right anterior negativity (ERAN) and a late frontal negativity (N5). In the present study we demonstrate that these components of the event-related potential can be evoked preattentively, that is, even when a musical stimulus is ignored. Both ERAN and N5 differed in amplitude as a function of music-theoretical principles. Participants had no special musical expertise; results thus provide evidence for an automatic processing of musical information in “nonmusicians.”

Two experiments addressed the following issues concerning modulation of the acoustic startle reflex during emotional imagery: (1) Is startle inhibited or potentiated during imagery of pleasurable events? (2) Does startle modulation differ for personal versus standard imagery scenes? (3) Is startle modulated differently during anger versus fear? For standard scenes, startle was greater during aversive than pleasant imagery, with both exceeding neutral. Blink potentiation was greater during imagery of personal pleasant than nonpersonal pleasant scenes. Startle potentiation did not differ for anger versus fear material, but differences were found in self-report, corrugator EMG, and HR response. These results suggest that in addition to the emotional valence of imagined material, startle reactivity is influenced by the degree of engagement or active disengagement from the sensory environment. The findings also indicate that fear and anger are differentiable in terms of affective report, cardiac mobilization, and expressive behavior, but not at the primary motivational level at which reflex priming occurs.

Event-related potentials to binaural complex tones were recorded from 40 depressed outpatients and 22 normal control participants at 30 electrode sites. Patients did not differ from control participants in N1 or P3 amplitude but showed greater N2. N2 was greater over right than over the left hemisphere at lateral sites in patients and control participants. A P3 asymmetry was found for control participants and patients with low scores on a physical anhedonia scale, but not for patients with high anhedonia scores. Topographic (local Laplacian) maps corresponding to P3 showed greater radial current flow over right than over left central regions in control participants. Patients with high anhedonia did not show this asymmetry, whereas patients with low anhedonia showed an intermediate asymmetry. These findings support the hypothesis that anhedonic depression is associated with dysfunction of right hemisphere mechanisms mediating the processing of complex pitch information.

Developmental psychophysiologists working with infants have no commonly accepted frequency definitions of EEG waves or rhythms. The purpose of this study was to investigate the task-related power changes in three infant EEG frequency bands during the performance of a spatial working memory task by 8-month-old infants. EEG data were divided into three frequency bands: 3–5 Hz, 6–9 Hz, and 10–12 Hz. Although all three frequency bands showed some level of discrimination of baseline from task and among different processing stages of cognitive activity, only the 6–9 Hz band consistently exhibited these capabilities and distinguished the correct from incorrect responses. These data may form the foundation for defining EEG frequency bands that are appropriate for use with infant research participants and for understanding the function of these frequencies during cognitive activity.

Asymmetry of waking electroencephalography (EEG) alpha power in frontal regions has been correlated with waking emotional reactivity and the emotional content of dream reports. Little is known regarding alpha asymmetry during sleep. The present study was performed to compare alpha power and alpha power asymmetry in various brain regions across states of sleep and wakefulness. Waking and sleep EEG were recorded in a group of patients undergoing polysomnographic evaluation for possible sleep disorders. Alpha EEG asymmetry in frontal and temporal regions was significantly correlated in waking versus sleep, particularly during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. These results suggest that patterns of frontal alpha asymmetry are stable across sleep and waking and may be related to emotional reactivity during dreaming. During sleep, alpha power was highest during slow-wave sleep and lowest during REM sleep. Implications of these data for understanding the functional significance of alpha power during waking and sleeping are considered.

The impact of evaluative observation on cardiovascular reactivity and adaptation to recurrent psychological stress was evaluated in 162 undergraduate men and women. All participants performed three mental arithmetic tasks with or without evaluative observation. Impedance cardiographic, blood pressure, task performance, and stress appraisal measures were recorded for each task. Evaluative observation moderated the effects of task repetition on cardiac reactivity but not vascular reactivity. The introduction of evaluative observation disrupted cardiac adaptation, resulting in a resurgence of β-adrenergic cardiac reactivity (p < .005), whereas the removal of evaluative observation promoted cardiac adaptation. Evaluative observation also increased stress appraisals and slowed task performance. The results support the dual process theory of habituation, rather than stimulus comparator theory, but only partially support cognitive appraisal theory.

This study investigated the locus of the interference effect in a stimulus–response compatibility task using event-related potentials (ERPs). Ten participants were instructed to respond to stimulus color with the left or right middle finger. Red or blue arrows pointed in the same direction as the response hand on congruent trials and pointed in the opposite direction on incongruent trials. Neutral trials were red or blue horizontal bars. Reaction times (RTs) to incongruent stimuli were significantly longer than RTs to congruent stimuli. The peak latency of the P300 for incongruent stimuli was significantly longer than that for congruent stimuli. In addition, onset of stimulus-locked lateralized readiness potential (LRPs) was significantly later for incongruent stimuli than for congruent stimuli. However, electromyogram (EMG)-locked LRPs for incongruent stimuli showed incorrect preparation. These results suggest that the interference effect might occur at the stage in which stimulus evaluation processes and response-related processes overlap.

The present study assessed the effects of occlusion duration and attention on components of the respiratory-related evoked potential (RREP). Twenty-nine channel evoked potential recordings were obtained from 12 young adults exposed to a pseudorandom sequence of 100-, 200-, 400-, and 800-ms inspiratory occlusions, under attend and ignore conditions. Results demonstrated that the duration of an inspiratory occlusion does not affect RREP components systematically, highlighting the importance of the onset of the occlusion in producing the cortical responses. Attention resulted in augmentation of the N1, P2, and P3 components but did not affect the early latency Nf and P1 components. P1, N1, and P3 occurred with shorter latencies in the attend condition. One subject with poor duration estimation ability displayed substantially delayed P3 latency. This result highlights the relationship between P3 and perception of respiratory somatosensory information.

The current study was designed to clarify the psychological functions most closely associated with frontal brain asymmetry. Electroencephalography (EEG) was recorded from 60 participants while they performed a delayed reaction time (RT) task that included manipulations of incentive, expectancy, and response. Significant alpha asymmetry effects were reflected in topographic differences across anterior EEG sites. Variations in monetary incentives resulted in parametric changes in anterior frontal alpha asymmetry. Manipulations of outcome expectancies were related to mid-frontal EEG changes that differed for men and women. Varied response requirements were related to central asymmetry patterns. Taken together, the findings suggest that regionally specific patterns of frontal asymmetry are functionally related to particular aspects of approach–withdrawal tendencies involved in the temporal guidance and regulation of goal-directed behavior.

Previous research has shown that regional brain activation, assessed via frontal electroencephalographic (EEG) asymmetry, predicts affective responsivity to aerobic exercise. To replicate and extend this work, in the present study we examined whether resting brain activation was associated with affective responses to an acute bout of aerobic exercise and the extent to which aerobic fitness mediated this relationship. Participants (high-fit, n = 22; low/moderate-fit, n = 45) ran on a treadmill for 30 min at 75% VO2max. EEG and affect were assessed pre- and 0-, 10-, 20-, and 30-min postexercise. Resting EEG asymmetry predicted positive affect (as measured by the energetic arousal subscale of the Activation Deactivation Adjective Check List) postexercise. Furthermore, resting frontal EEG asymmetry predicted affect only in the high-fit group, suggesting the effect might be mediated by some factor related to fitness. It was also shown that subjects with relatively greater left frontal activation had significantly more energy (i.e., activated pleasant affect) following exercise than subjects with relatively greater right frontal activation. In conclusion, aerobic fitness influenced the relationship between resting frontal asymmetry and exercise-related affective responsivity.

The objective of this study was to assess the relation between the intensity of single moods and of mood combinations on blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR). The subjects were 203 healthy registered nurses, all women, who were studied on two work and two off days. Ambulatory BP and HR were recorded every 20 min. On each occasion subjects rated their moods on a 5-point scale. Graded increases in BP and HR were shown with higher ratings of negative moods and decreases for a mood related to energy level. Little change was observed for a positive mood. These effects depended on concurrent changes in other moods. A positive mood countered the effects of a negative mood, whereas two negative moods resulted in unique patterns of BP and HR. The energy level mood moderated the cardiovascular effects of positive and negative moods. Ambulatory methods provide a way of probing into the nature and consequences of everyday emotional experiences.

In this study we tested the hypothesis that hypoalgesia in individuals at risk for hypertension is related to enhanced activation of supraspinal pain modulation systems. Supraspinal inhibition of pain signals was assessed using a diffuse noxious inhibitory control paradigm, in which a noxious conditioning stimulus was used to suppress pain in response to a noxious test stimulus applied to a remote area of the body. Specifically, the nociceptive flexion reflex (NFR) was assessed in 113 healthy young adults before, during, and after exposure to forearm tourniquet ischemia. Consistent with previous evidence of hypoalgesia in individuals at risk for hypertension, offspring of hypertensive individuals exhibited significantly higher NFR thresholds than offspring of normotensive persons. Although NFR activity was significantly decreased in all participants during concomitant application of forearm ischemia, the degree of attenuation of NFR activity was not significantly different as a function of risk for hypertension.

Task-evoked pupillary responses were recorded during a visual backward masking task as an index of resource allocation. Increased pupillary dilation indicates increased allocation of processing resources to the task. Consistent with numerous studies, detection accuracy increased with longer interstimulus intervals and approximated no-mask accuracy in the 300-ms condition. Pupillary dilation responses were significantly greater during task performance (cognitive load) than during a passive stimulus viewing condition (no-load) and were significantly greater in the 300-ms condition than the no-mask condition. Consistent with models of early visual information processing, the results suggest that the mask demanded extra processing resources when it followed the target by more than 100 ms. Pupillography methods may be useful in evaluating the contribution and timing of resource-demanding processes during early visual information processing.

Choice reaction time (RT) is shorter when the stimulus corresponds spatially to the response than when the stimulus does not, even when the stimulus location is irrelevant to the task. We used electromyographic measures to document that this effect is the result of a response conflict. The activity of the prime movers of two alternative responses was recorded during the performance of a visual RT task in which the irrelevant spatial correspondence between the stimuli and the responses was varied. Only the premotor component of RT was affected by the stimulus–response correspondence. Correct trials were distinguished according to whether or not the activation of the prime mover involved in the required response was preceded by an activation of the prime mover involved in the alternative response. Double muscular activation trials were more numerous for noncorresponding than for corresponding stimulus–response associations. Furthermore, these trials yielded longer RTs than the single muscular activation trials.
