Survey data typically contain many variables. Structural equation modeling (SEM) is commonly used in analyzing such data. The most widely used statistic for evaluating the adequacy of a SEM model is TML, a slight modification to the likelihood ratio statistic. Under normality assumption, TML approximately follows a chi-square distribution when the number of observations (N) is large and the number of items or variables (p) is small. However, in practice, p can be rather large while N is always limited due to not having enough participants. Even with a relatively large N, empirical results show that TML rejects the correct model too often when p is not too small. Various corrections to TML have been proposed, but they are mostly heuristic. Following the principle of the Bartlett correction, this paper proposes an empirical approach to correct TML so that the mean of the resulting statistic approximately equals the degrees of freedom of the nominal chi-square distribution. Results show that empirically corrected statistics follow the nominal chi-square distribution much more closely than previously proposed corrections to TML, and they control type I errors reasonably well whenever N≥max(50,2p). The formulations of the empirically corrected statistics are further used to predict type I errors of TML as reported in the literature, and they perform well.

The monotone homogeneity model (MHM—also known as the unidimensional monotone latent variable model) is a nonparametric IRT formulation that provides the underpinning for partitioning a collection of dichotomous items to form scales. Ellis (Psychometrika 79:303–316, 2014, doi:10.1007/s11336-013-9341-5) has recently derived inequalities that are implied by the MHM, yet require only the bivariate (inter-item) correlations. In this paper, we incorporate these inequalities within a mathematical programming formulation for partitioning a set of dichotomous scale items. The objective criterion of the partitioning model is to produce clusters of maximum cardinality. The formulation is a binary integer linear program that can be solved exactly using commercial mathematical programming software. However, we have also developed a standalone branch-and-bound algorithm that produces globally optimal solutions. Simulation results and a numerical example are provided to demonstrate the proposed method.

Functional extended redundancy analysis (FERA) was recently developed to integrate data reduction into functional linear models. This technique extracts a component from each of multiple sets of predictor data in such a way that the component accounts for the maximum variance of response data. Moreover, it permits predictor and/or response data to be functional. FERA can be of use in describing overall characteristics of each set of predictor data and in summarizing the relationships between predictor and response data. In this paper, we extend FERA into the framework of generalized linear models (GLM), so that it can deal with response data generated from a variety of distributions. Specifically, the proposed method reduces each set of predictor functions to a component and uses the component for explaining exponential-family responses. As in GLM, we specify the random, systematic, and link function parts of the proposed method. We develop an iterative algorithm to maximize a penalized log-likelihood criterion that is derived in combination with a basis function expansion approach. We conduct two simulation studies to investigate the performance of the proposed method based on synthetic data. In addition, we apply the proposed method to two examples to demonstrate its empirical usefulness.

In this rejoinder we discuss the following aspects of our approach to model discrepancy: the interpretations of the two populations and adventitious error, the choice of inverse Wishart distribution, the perceived danger of justifying a model with bad fit, the relationship among our new approach, Chen’s (J R Stat Soc Ser B, 41:235–248, 1979) approach and the existing RMSEA-based approach, and the Pitman drift assumption.

Effort has been devoted to account for heteroscedasticity with respect to observed or latent moderator variables in item or test scores. For instance, in the multi-group generalized linear latent trait model, it could be tested whether the observed (polychoric) covariance matrix differs across the levels of an observed moderator variable. In the case that heteroscedasticity arises across the latent trait itself, existing models commonly distinguish between heteroscedastic residuals and a skewed trait distribution. These models have valuable applications in intelligence, personality and psychopathology research. However, existing approaches are only limited to continuous and polytomous data, while dichotomous data are common in intelligence and psychopathology research. Therefore, in present paper, a heteroscedastic latent trait model is presented for dichotomous data. The model is studied in a simulation study, and applied to data pertaining alcohol use and cognitive ability.

Factor or conditional independence models based on copulas are proposed for multivariate discrete data such as item responses. The factor copula models have interpretations of latent maxima/minima (in comparison with latent means) and can lead to more probability in the joint upper or lower tail compared with factor models based on the discretized multivariate normal distribution (or multidimensional normal ogive model). Details on maximum likelihood estimation of parameters for the factor copula model are given, as well as analysis of the behavior of the log-likelihood. Our general methodology is illustrated with several item response data sets, and it is shown that there is a substantial improvement on existing models both conceptually and in fit to data.

Dual scaling (DS) is a multivariate exploratory method equivalent to correspondence analysis when analysing contingency tables. However, for the analysis of rating data, different proposals appear in the DS and correspondence analysis literature. It is shown here that a peculiarity of the DS method can be exploited to detect differences in response styles. Response styles occur when respondents use rating scales differently for reasons not related to the questions, often biasing results. A spline-based constrained version of DS is devised which can detect the presence of four prominent types of response styles, and is extended to allow for multiple response styles. An alternating nonnegative least squares algorithm is devised for estimating the parameters. The new method is appraised both by simulation studies and an empirical application.

When differential item functioning (DIF) is investigated, DIF classification is made using statistical test results and estimated DIF sizes in practice. One of the well-known DIF classifications is that of the Educational Testing Service (ETS) A (negligible DIF), B (medium DIF), and C (large DIF) rules. This article provides a clarifying note on (a) a sketch of the proof of the asymptotic normality of what is known as the Mantel–Haenszel (MH) delta, which provides the basis of a point and an interval null hypothesis test based on the MH delta, and (b) how to conduct an interval null hypothesis test using the MH delta, which is necessary for the C DIF classification.

While estimation bias is a primary concern in psychological and educational measurement, the standard error is of equal importance in linking key aspects of the assessment structure, especially when the assessment goal concerns the classification of individuals into categories (e.g., master/non-mastery). In this paper, we show analytically how standard error of ability estimates affects expected classification accuracy and consistency when the decision is binary. When standard error decreases, the conditional classification accuracy and consistency increase. Given an examinee population and a cut score, smaller standard error over the entire latent trait continuum guarantees higher overall expected classification accuracy and consistency. We were also able to show the interrelationship between standard error, the expected classification consistency, and reliability. Utilizing the relationship between standard error and expected classification accuracy and consistency, we derive the upper bounds of the overall expected classification accuracy and consistency of a fixed-length computerized adaptive test. The lower bound of the expected classification accuracy and consistency is also derived given a number of stopping rules of variable-length computerized adaptive testing. Implications of these analytical results on operational tests are discussed.

A Cultural Consensus Theory approach for ordinal data is developed, leading to a new model for ordered polytomous data. The model introduces a novel way of measuring response biases and also measures consensus item values, a consensus response scale, item difficulty, and informant knowledge. The model is extended as a finite mixture model to fit both simulated and real multicultural data, in which subgroups of informants have different sets of consensus item values. The extension is thus a form of model-based clustering for ordinal data. The hierarchical Bayesian framework is utilized for inference, and two posterior predictive checks are developed to verify the central assumptions of the model.

A number of mathematical models for overcoming intransitive choice have been proposed and tested in the literature of decision theory. This article presents the development of a new stochastic choice model based on multidimensional scaling. This allows decision-makers to have multiple viewpoints, whereas current multidimensional scaling models are based on the assumption that a subject or group of subjects has only one viewpoint. The implication of our model is that subjects make an intransitive choice because they are able to shift their viewpoint. This paper also presents the maximum likelihood estimation of the proposed model, and reanalyzes Tversky’s gamble experiment data.

The present work explores the connections between cognitive diagnostic models (CDM) and knowledge space theory (KST) and shows that these two quite distinct approaches overlap. It is proved that in fact the Multiple Strategy DINA (Deterministic Input Noisy AND-gate) model and the CBLIM, a competence-based extension of the basic local independence model (BLIM), are equivalent. To demonstrate the benefits that arise from integrating the two theoretical perspectives, it is shown that a fairly complete picture on the identifiability of these models emerges by combining results from both camps. The impact of the results is illustrated by an empirical example, and topics for further research are pointed out.

Large sample theory states the asymptotic normality of the maximum likelihood estimator of the person parameter in the two parameter logistic (2PL) model. In short tests, however, the assumption of normality can be grossly wrong. As a consequence, intended coverage rates may be exceeded and confidence intervals are revealed to be overly conservative. Methods belonging to the higher-order-theory, more specifically saddlepoint approximations, are a convenient way to deal with small-sample problems. Confidence bounds obtained by these means hold the approximate confidence level for a broad range of the person parameter. Moreover, an approximation to the exact distribution permits to compute median unbiased estimates (MUE) that are as likely to overestimate as to underestimate the true person parameter. Additionally, in small samples, these MUE are less mean-biased than the often-used maximum likelihood estimator.

Making inferences from IRT-based test scores requires accurate and reliable methods of person parameter estimation. Given an already calibrated set of item parameters, the latent trait could be estimated either via maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) or using Bayesian methods such as maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimation or expected a posteriori (EAP) estimation. In addition, Warm’s (Psychometrika 54:427–450, 1989) weighted likelihood estimation method was proposed to reduce the bias of the latent trait estimate in unidimensional models. In this paper, we extend the weighted MLE method to multidimensional models. This new method, denoted as multivariate weighted MLE (MWLE), is proposed to reduce the bias of the MLE even for short tests. MWLE is compared to alternative estimators (i.e., MLE, MAP and EAP) and shown, both analytically and through simulations studies, to be more accurate in terms of bias than MLE while maintaining a similar variance. In contrast, Bayesian estimators (i.e., MAP and EAP) result in biased estimates with smaller variability.

Finally, to compare the efficiency and robustness of these new estimators with that obtained through maximum likelihood when the sample size is not big enough to apply the asymptotic results, we have carried out a simulation study.

Extending the theory of lower bounds to reliability based on splits given by Guttman (in Psychometrika 53, 63–70, 1945), this paper introduces quantile lower bound coefficients λ4(Q) that refer to cumulative proportions of potential locally optimal “split-half” coefficients that are below a particular point Q in the distribution of split-halves based on different partitions of variables into two sets. Interesting quantile values are Q=0.05,0.50,0.95,1.00 with λ4(0.05)≤λ4(0.50)≤λ4(0.95)≤λ4(1.0). Only the global optimum λ4(1.0), Guttman’s maximal λ4, has previously been considered to be interesting, but in small samples it substantially overestimates population reliability ρ. The three coefficients λ4(0.05), λ4(0.50), and λ4(0.95) provide new lower bounds to reliability. The smallest, λ4(0.05), provides the most protection against capitalizing on chance associations, and thus overestimation, λ4(0.50) is the median of these coefficients, while λ4(0.95) tends to overestimate reliability, but also exhibits less bias than previous estimators. Computational theory, algorithm, and publicly available code based in R are provided to compute these coefficients. Simulation studies evaluate the performance of these coefficients and compare them to coefficient alpha and the greatest lower bound under several population reliability structures.

In a recent article Jennrich and Satorra (Psychometrika 78: 545–552, 2013) showed that a proof by Browne (British Journal of Mathematical and Statistical Psychology 37: 62–83, 1984) of the asymptotic distribution of a goodness of fit test statistic is incomplete because it fails to prove that the orthogonal component function employed is continuous. Jennrich and Satorra (Psychometrika 78: 545–552, 2013) showed how Browne’s proof can be completed satisfactorily but this required the development of an extensive and mathematically sophisticated framework for continuous orthogonal component functions. This short note provides a simple proof of the asymptotic distribution of Browne’s (British Journal of Mathematical and Statistical Psychology 37: 62–83, 1984) test statistic by using an equivalent form of the statistic that does not involve orthogonal component functions and consequently avoids all complicating issues associated with them.

We propose a two-way Bayesian vector spatial procedure incorporating dimension reparameterization with a variable selection option to determine the dimensionality and simultaneously identify the significant covariates that help interpret the derived dimensions in the joint space map. We discuss how we solve identifiability problems in a Bayesian context that are associated with the two-way vector spatial model, and demonstrate through a simulation study how our proposed model outperforms a popular benchmark model. In addition, an empirical application dealing with consumers’ ratings of large sport utility vehicles is presented to illustrate the proposed methodology. We are able to obtain interpretable and managerially insightful results from our proposed model with variable selection in comparison with the benchmark model.

The paper offers a general review of the basic concepts of both statistical model and parameter identification, and revisits the conceptual relationships between parameter identification and both parameter interpretability and properties of parameter estimates. All these issues are then exemplified for the 1PL, 2PL, and 1PL-G fixed-effects models. For the 3PL model, however, we provide a theorem proving that the item parameters are not identified, do not have an empirical interpretation and that it is not possible to obtain consistent and unbiased estimates of them.

Posterior odds of cheating on achievement tests are presented as an alternative to $p$\documentclass[12pt]{minimal}\usepackage{amsmath}\usepackage{wasysym}\usepackage{amsfonts}\usepackage{amssymb}\usepackage{amsbsy}\usepackage{mathrsfs}\usepackage{upgreek}\setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt}\begin{document}$$p$$\end{document} values reported for statistical hypothesis testing for several of the probabilistic models in the literature on the detection of cheating. It is shown how to calculate their combinatorial expressions with the help of a reformulation of the simple recursive algorithm for the calculation of number-correct score distributions used throughout the testing industry. Using the odds avoids the arbitrary choice between statistical tests of answer copying that do and do not condition on the responses the test taker is suspected to have copied and allows the testing agency to account for existing circumstantial evidence of cheating through the specification of prior odds.
