I will review the role of massive stars in galactic evolution both from the nucleosynthesis and energetics point of view. In particular, I will highlight some important observational facts explained by means of massive stars in galaxies of different morphological type: the Milky Way, ellipticals and dwarf spheroidals. I will describe first the time-delay model and its interpretation in terms of abundance ratios in galaxies, then I will discuss the importance of mass loss in massive stars to reproduce the data in the Galactic bulge and disk. I will discuss also how massive stars can be important producers of primary nitrogen if rotation in stellar models is taken into account. Concerning elliptical galaxies, I will show that to reproduce the observed [Mg/Fe] versus Mass relation in these galaxies it is necessary to assume a more important role of massive stars in more massive galaxies and that this can be achieved by means of downsizing in star formation. I will discuss how massive stars are responsible in triggering galactic winds both in ellipticals and dwarf spheroidals. These latter systems show a low overabundance of α-elements relative to Fe with respect to Galactic stars of the same [Fe/H]: this is interpreted as due to a slow star formation coupled with very efficient galactic winds. Finally, I will show a comparison between the predicted Type Ib/c rates in galaxies and the observed GRB rate and how we can impose constraints on the mechanism of galaxy formation by studying the GRB rate at high redshift.

We present highest angular resolution (~ 1″ and 0.35″) mm-interferometric observations of the HCN(1-0), 12CO(1-0) and 12CO(2-1) line emission in the central 300 pc of the late-type spiral galaxy NGC 6946. The data, obtained with the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI) shows for the first time a molecular gas spiral in the inner ~ 10″ (270 pc) with a large concentration of molecular gas () within the inner 60 pc, The gas distribution in the central 50 pc has been resolved and is consistent with a gas ring or spiral driven by a bar. Both the distribution of the molecular gas as well as its kinematics can be well explained by the influence of an inner stellar bar of about 400 pc length as tested via a qualitative model for the gas flow. NGC 6946 is a prime example of molecular gas kinematics being driven by a small-scale, secondary stellar bar.

For the first time, it is possible to directly compare the location of (dense) giant molecular clouds with that of (optically) visible HII regions in space-based images. We use the 3 mm continuum and the HCN emission to estimate in the central 50 pc the star formation rates in young clusters that are still embedded in their parent clouds and hence are missed in optical and near-IR surveys of star formation. The amount of embedded star formation is about 1.6 times as high as that measured from HII regions alone, and appears roughly evenly split between ongoing dust-obscured star formation and very young giant molecular cloud cores that are just beginning to form stars. The build-up of central mass seems to have continued over the past ≥ 10 Myrs, to have occurred in an extended (albeit small) volume around the nucleus, and to be closely related to the presence of an inner bar.

Based on the conventional sequential-accretion paradigm, we have proposed that, during the migration of first-born gas giants outside the orbits of planetary embryos, super Earth planets will form inside the 2:1 resonance location by sweeping of mean motion resonances (Zhou et al. 2005). In this paper, we study the subsequent evolution of a super Earth (m1) under the effects of tidal dissipation and perturbation from a first-born gas giant (m2) in an outside orbit. Secular perturbation and mean motion resonances (especially 2 : 1 and 5 : 2 resonances) between m1 and m2 excite the eccentricity of m1, which causes the migration of m1 and results in a hot super Earth. The calculated final location of the hot super Earth is independent of the tidal energy dissipation factor Q′. The study of migration history of a Hot Super Earth is useful to reveal it's Q′ value and to predict its final location in the presence of one or more hot gas giants. When this investigation is applied to the GJ876 system, it correctly reproduces the observed location of GJ876d around 0.02 AU.

Three-body stability is fundamental to astrophysical processes on all length and mass scales from planetary systems to clusters of galaxies, so it is vital we have a deep and thorough understanding of this centuries-old problem. Here we summarize an analytical method for determining the stability of arbitrary three-body hierarchies which makes use of the chaos theory concept of resonance overlap. For the first time the dependence on all orbital elements and masses can be given explicitly via simple analytical expressions which contain no empirical parameters. For clarity and brevity, analysis in this paper is restricted to coplanar systems including a description of a practical algorithm for use in N-body and other applications. A Fortran routine for arbitrarily inclined systems is available from the author, and animations of stable and unstable systems are available at www.maths.monash.edu.au/~ro/Capri.

Substantial numbers of morphologically regular early-type (elliptical and lenticular) galaxies contain molecular gas, and the quantities of gas are probably sufficient to explain recent estimates of the current level of star formation activity. This gas can also be used as a tracer of the processes that drive the evolution of early-type galaxies. For example, in most cases the gas is forming dynamically cold stellar disks with sizes in the range of hundreds of pc to more than one kpc, although there is typically only 1% of the total stellar mass currently available to form young stars. The numbers are still small, but the molecular kinematics indicate that some of the gas probably originated from internal stellar mass loss while some was acquired from outside. Future studies will help to quantify the role of molecular gas (dissipational processes) in the formation of early-type galaxies and their evolution along the red sequence.

High angular resolution observations are essential for understanding the nature of maser emission and the sources which excite it. Here we present preliminary results from MERLIN observations of three methanol masers from the Toruń survey. These MERLIN observations are being analysed as part of the interferometric component of the Methanol Multibeam (MMB) Survey which is surveying the Galactic plane at |b|≤2° for 6.67 GHz methanol maser sources.

Analysis of dwarf galaxies in the local universe shows that dwarf irregular galaxies are its dominant populations and the majority of dwarf elliptical galaxies are likely to be located in the overdense regions, However, a significant fraction of blue dwarf ellipticals (dEblue) and peculiar dwarf ellipticals (dEpec are found to be located in the under-dense regions.

Precision astrometry can yield model-independent distances and velocities for neutron stars. Such measurements can be exploited, for example, to locate neutron star birth sites, establish reference frame ties, model the Galactic electron density distribution, and constrain the astrophysics of supernova explosions. As a case study, I discuss recent some parallax and proper motion measurements, and their scientific implications for supernova core collapse and the velocities of ordinary pulsars versus magnetars. I also outline the calibration techniques that are enabling sub-milliarcsecond astrometry of neutron stars with VLBI. In the short term, systematic surveys and high sensitivity on very long baselines will produce ongoing science dividends from precision astrometry at radio wavelengths. In the longer term, new technology such as focal plane arrays, new telescopes such as the Square Kilometre Array, and synergy with new instruments such as Gaia, LSST, and GLAST, all hold great promise in an upcoming era of microarcsecond astrometry.

Division IX provides a forum for astronomers engaged in the innovation, development and calibration of optical instrumentation and observational procedures including data processing.

The high resolution observations (TRACE and SOHO) of waves in coronal structures have revealed a rapid damping of modes, sometimes their damping length being of the same order as their wavelength. The rapid damping of modes in coronal loops permits us to derive values for magnetic field and transport coefficients. In this contribution we study the damping of linear compressional waves considering a two-dimensional propagation in gravitationally stratified plasma in the presence of thermal conduction. By considering this 2D model, we show that the presence of an additional transversal motion has an important effect on the damping of the waves. This theoretical model allows as to conclude that the main effects influencing the damping of the waves are the degree of the transversal structuring and temperature.

Despite the complexity and uncertainties of core collapse supernova simulations there is a need to provide correct nucleosynthesis abundances for the progressing field of galactic evolution and observations of low metallicity stars. Especially the innermost ejecta are directly affected by the explosion mechanism, i.e. most strongly the yields of Fe-group nuclei for which an induced piston or thermal bomb treatment will not provide the correct yields because the effect of neutrino interactions is not included.

Recent observations of metal-poor halo stars support the suggested existence of a lighter element primary process (LEPP) which operates very early in the galaxy and is independent of the r-process. We present a candidate for the LEPP, the so-called νp-process.

We present a mechanism by which gas giants form efficiently around intermediate mass stars. MRI-driven turbulence effectively drives angular momentum transport in regions of the disk with sufficiently high ionization fraction. In the inner regions of the disk, where the midplane temperature is above ∼1000K, thermal ionization effectively couples the disk to the magnetic field, providing a relatively large viscosity. A pressure maximum will develop outside of this region as the gaseous disk approaches a steady-state surface density profile, trapping migrating solid material. This rocky material will coagulate into planetesimals which grow rapidly until they reach isolation mass. Around intermediate mass stars, viscous heating will push the critical radius for thermal ionization of the midplane out to around 1 AU. This will increase the isolation mass for solid cores. Planets formed here may migrate inwards due to type II migration, but they will induce the formation of subsequent giant planets at the outer edge of the gap they have opened. In this manner, gas giants can form around intermediate mass stars at a few AU.

The problem of three stars arises in many connections in stellar dynamics: three-body scattering drives the evolution of star clusters, and bound triple systems form long-lasting intermediate structures in them. Here we address the question of stability of triple stars. For a given system the stability is easy to determine by numerical orbit calculation. However, we often have only statistical knowledge of some of the parameters of the system. Then one needs a more general analytical formula. Here we start with the analytical calculation of the single encounter between a binary and a single star by Heggie (1975). Using some of the later developments we get a useful expression for the energy change per encounter as a function of the pericenter distance, masses, and relative inclination of the orbit. Then we assume that the orbital energy evolves by random walk in energy space until the accumulated energy change leads to instability. In this way we arrive at a stability limit in pericenter distance of the outer orbit for different mass combinations, outer orbit eccentricities and inclinations. The result is compared with numerical orbit calculations.

We discuss the nature of the Galactic center lobe (GCL), a degree-tall, loop-like structure apparently erupting from the central few hundred parsecs of our Galaxy. Although its coincidence with the Galactic center has inspired diverse models for its origin, the observational evidence connecting this structure to the GC region has been thin. We describe a multiwavelength observing campaign with the VLA, GBT, Spitzer, and other telescopes that finds compelling evidence that the structure is likely formed by a mass outflow from the central tens of parsecs of our Galaxy. The size and mass of the putative outflow is consistent with that expected from the observed supernova rate and gas pressure in the GC region. If the GCL is a mass outflow, its relative proximity offers a unique opportunity for studying these structures in unprecedented detail.

We present results from a targeted survey undertaken with the 305m Arecibo radiotelescope to detect HI-line emission from disk galaxies at redshift z>0.16. Among other applications, this dataset will be used to study the evolution of disk scaling relations at intermediate redshifts. Compared to optical velocity widths, HI measurements sample a larger fraction of the disks, where the rotation curves are typically flat, and are not affected by slit smearing and misalignment or by aperture effects. Thus, in contrast to studies based on optical spectroscopy, this dataset allows for a direct comparison with the local Tully-Fisher relation that is technique independent.

The SKA is a global project to plan and construct the next-generation international radio telescope operating at metre to cm wavelengths. More than 50 institutes in 19 countries are involved in its development. The SKA will be an interferometric array with a collecting area of up to one million square metres and maximum baseline of at least 3000 km. The SKA reference design includes field-of-view expansion technology that will allow instantaneous imaging of up to several tens of degrees. The SKA is being designed to address fundamental questions in cosmology, physics and astronomy. The key science goals range from the epoch or re-ionization, dark energy, the formation and evolution of galaxies and large-scale structure, the origin and evolution of cosmic magnetism, strong-field tests of gravity and gravity wave detection, the cradle of life, and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. The sensitivity, field-of-view and angular resolution of the SKA will make possible a program to create a multi-epoch data base of wide-angle relative astrometry to a few μas precision for ~10,000,000 radio sources with S > 10 μJy.

Transit observations indicate a large dispersion in the internal structure among the known gas giants. This is a big challenge to the conventional sequential planetary formation scenario because the diversity is inconsistent with the expectation of some well defined critical condition for the onset of gas accretion in this scenario. We suggest that giant impacts may lead to the merger of planets or the accretion of planetary embryos and cause the diversity of the core mass. By using an SPH scheme, we show that direct parabolic collisions generally lead to the total coalescence of impinging gas giants whereas, during glancing collisions, the efficiency of core retention is much larger than that of the envelope. We also examine the adjustment of the gaseous envelope with a 1D Lagrangian hydrodynamic scheme. In the proximity of their host stars, the expansion of the planets' envelopes, shortly after sufficiently catastrophic impacts, can lead to a substantial loss of gas through Roche-lobe overflow. We are going to examine the possibility that the accretion of several Earth-mass objects can significantly enlarge the planets' photosphere and elevate the tidal dissipation rate over the time scale of 100 Myr.

We present VLBI and single dish observations of a strong (1000 Jy) OH maser flare at 1665 MHz in the star-forming region W75N. This new flare appeared in 2003, after a 100 Jy flare in 2000. Three major spectral features N1, N2, and N3 were present at all epochs, with N1 declining and N2 increasing in flux density during observations taken in 2003–2006. All three features have strong linear polarization approaching 90%. VLBI maps show that along with the strong features N1-3, many weaker features have appeared within 100 mas of the ultra compact HII region VLA 2. The proper motion of the flare feature N1 was measured: Δα=1.36±0.3; Δδ=-0.3±0.3 mas in 1.75 years, corresponding to a tangential velocity of about 8 km s−1 relative to the rest of the features, and is comparable to the radial velocity range in the VLA 2 disk.

We present near-infrared (H- and K-band) SINFONI integral-field observations of the circumnuclear star formation rings in five nearby spiral galaxies. We made use of the relative intensities of different emission lines (i.e. [FeII], HeI, Brγ) to age date the stellar clusters present along the rings. This qualitative, yet robust, method allows us to discriminate between two distinct scenarios that describe how star formation progresses along the rings. Our findings favour a model where star formation is triggered predominantly at the intersection between the bar major axis and the inner Lindblad resonance and then passively evolves as the clusters rotate around the ring (‘Pearls on a string’ scenario), although models of stochastically distributed star formation (‘Popcorn’ model) cannot be completely ruled out.

The various methods for regularisation of the gravitational few-body problem, from the coordinate transformation by the Kustaanheimo-Stiefel method to the more recent methods of algorithmic regularisation, are reviewed. Numerical comparisons of the performance of the methods are presented and future research suggested.
