To study effects of stellar variability, it is necessary to have complete lists of variable stars with good coordinates, correct variability ranges, reliable classification. The General Catalogue of Variable Stars (GCVS) is one of the main sources of information of this kind. Recently, the flow of information on stellar variability has increased strongly, requiring new approaches to GCVS compilation. New classification schemes are needed for variable stars, taking into account the development of our knowledge. We present information on the current state of the GCVS, its web data base, new Name-Lists containing thousands of new variables. We also discuss the problems of developing a new classification system for variable stars, of implementing catalogs of variable stars based on automatic surveys into the GCVS, of cooperation and interaction between the GCVS and other important sources of information on variable stars.

We present a study of star clusters in the starburst galaxy M82 using the BVI mosaic images taken with the Hubble Space Telescope's Advanced Camera for Surveys. We have selected about 850 clusters with V < 23 mag based on their morphological information. The brightest cluster is as bright as V ~ 16.5 mag (MV ~ −11.2 mag) and most clusters are fainter than V = 18 mag (MV = −9.7 mag). The V-band luminosity function is represented by a power law with a slope α ~ −2.0 in the range of −9.5 < MV < −7 mag. The star clusters in M82 are mainly distributed in the galaxy's disk. However, about a dozen clusters are found far from the disk and are considered to belong to the halo of M82. The color–magnitude diagrams of star clusters show that most star clusters are highly reddened. We have derived the age of the star clusters using a spectral-energy-distribution fitting method with Bruzual & Charlot simple stellar population models. We discuss the age distribution as well as the photometric properties of the star clusters in regard to the formation history of the M82 cluster population.

We present clustering results for AGN jointly selected to have optical and X-ray data at z ~ 3 in the ECDF-S field. Using Chandra X-ray imaging and UVR optical colors from MUSYC photometry, we selected a sample of 58 z ~ 3 AGN candidates. From the optical data we also selected 1385 Lyman break galaxies (LBG) in the range 2.8 < z < 3.8 with R < 25.5 mag. From optical spectroscopy, we have also determined redshifts and AGN types and estimated the UV and X-ray luminosities for the set of active galaxies selected by this method. We performed autocorrelation and cross-correlation analyses and present here our results for the clustering amplitudes and dark matter (DM) halo masses of each sample. The clustering analysis yields median DM halo masses of log M/M⊙ = 11.9±0.2 for the LBG sample, and log M/M⊙ = 12.9+0.4−0.9 for the sample of AGN. This shows that the active supermassive black holes (SMBHs) targeted by this selection method tend to sit in galaxies more massive than the typical population of UV–continuum selected galaxies, although showing much less clustering than SDSS quasars at the same redshift. Additionally, the expected evolution of the DM halos in ΛCDM cosmology implies that today these z ~ 3 SMBHs are hosted by group-sized halos, with masses log M/M⊙ = 14.1+0.3−0.2, at the high-mass end of the distribution of LBG DM halo descendants at z = 0.

Eureka is a “prose poem” published in 1848, where Edgar Allan Poe presents his original cosmology. While starting from metaphysical assumptions, Poe develops an evolving Newtonian model of the Universe which has many and non casual analogies with modern cosmology. Poe was well informed about astronomical and physical discoveries, and he was influenced by both contemporary science and ancient ideas. For these reasons, Eureka is a unique synthesis of metaphysics, art and science.

The Indian National Large Solar Telescope (NLST) will be a state-of-the-art 2-m class telescope for carrying out high resolution studies of the solar atmosphere. Sites in the Himalayan region at altitudes greater than 4000-m that have extremely low water vapor content and are unaffected by monsoons are under evaluation. This project is led by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics and has national and international partners.

NLST is an on-axis alt-azimuth Gregorian multi-purpose open telescope with the provision of carrying out night time stellar observations using a spectrograph. The telescope utilizes an innovative design with low number of reflections to achieve a high throughput and low instrumental polarization. High order adaptive optics is integrated into the design that works with a modest Fried's parameter of 7-cm to give diffraction limited performance. The telescope will be equipped with a suite of post-focus instruments including a high resolution spectrograph and a polarimeter. A detailed concept design of the telescope is presently being finalized and fabrication is expected to begin in 2010 with first light in 2014.

In Discussion D the following problems were addressed: Has 6Li really been detected in the atmospheres of metal-poor halo stars? Is there a downward trend or increased scatter of Li abundances in stars on the ‘Li-plateau’ at metallicities [Fe/H] ≲ −2.5? Are there significant differences of Li abundances in main-sequence, turn-off, and sub-giant stars in globular clusters? Is the Li abundance in solar-type stars related to the presence of planets? How does the Be abundance in dwarf stars increase with the heavy-element abundance, and is there a cosmic scatter in Be at a given [Fe/H]? The discussion of these problems is summarized and some suggestions for future observational and theoretical studies are mentioned.

We present a characterization method based on spectral cross-correlation to obtain the physical parameters of the controversial stellar aggregate ESO442–SC04. The data used was obtained with GMOS at the Gemini South telescope, and includes spectra of 17 stars in the central region of the object and 6 standard stars. fxcor was used iteratively to obtain self-consistent radial velocities for the standard stars and average radial velocities for the science spectra. Spectral types, effective temperatures, surface gravities and metallicities were determined using fxcor to correlate cluster spectra with the ELODIE spectral library and select the best correlation matches using the Tonry & Davis ratio. Analysis of the results suggests that the stars in ESO442–SC04 are not bound and, therefore, they do not constitute a physical system.

We present the stellar parameters and lithium abundance for 23 stars of the young stellar association AB Doradus, determined by photometry and spectroscopy. The photometric data was obtained at OPD/LNA and/or from the literature and the spectroscopic data was obtained at La silla/ESO and at OPD/LNA. The parameters were determined using photometric calibrations, line ratios, curves of growth and spectral synthesis. Our results confirm that the selected stars are probably association members, showing an uniform metallicity and lithium depletion consistent with 50 Myears

In the past years, a clear picture of the evolution of outbursts of black-hole X-ray binaries has emerged. While the X-ray properties can be classified into our distinct states, based on spectral and timing properties, the observations in the radio band have shown strong links between accretion and ejection properties. Here I briefly outline the association between X-ray timing and jet properties.

Starburst features in the optical are nowadays well known, but the use of this knowledge is not always possible (e.g. objects heavily obscured). In this case the near-IR is of unprecedented value. Recent models show that TP-AGB stars should dominate the NIR spectra of populations 0.3 to 2 Gyr old. While the optical spectra is insensitive to the presence of these stars, the near-IR changes dramatically. Not only does the absolute flux in the near-IR is affected, but also peculiar absorption features appear. These features can be used as indicators of 1 Gyr stellar population. In this work we used the IRTF Spex to create the first empirical database of NIR spectra of carefully selected starbursts, to test for the first time and in a consistent way the new stellar population models that account for the TP-AGB. The methodology used is to do stellar population synthesis in the optical and in the NIR, and compare the predictions of both spectral regions. We also compare the strength of important features of the TP-AGB stars, like the CN (1.1 microns) and CO (2.3 microns) bands with optical diagnostics.

The coalescence of black hole binaries is a significant source of gravitational wave radiation. The typically asymmetric nature of this emission, which carries linear momentum, can result in the recoil of the black hole remnant with velocities in the range 100 < Vrecoil < 3750 km s−1. The detectability of recoiling massive black holes (MBH) as off-nuclear QSOs is tightly connected with the properties of the host galaxy, which determine the MBH's orbit and fuel reservoir. We present the results of N-body simulations of recoiling MBHs in high-resolution, non-axisymmetric potentials. We find that if the recoil velocities are high enough to reach regions of the galaxy dominated by the generally triaxial dark matter distribution, the return time is significantly extended when compared to a spherical distribution. We also perform simulations of recoiling MBHs traveling in gas merger remnants, where large amounts of gas have been funneled to the central regions, In this case, the MBHs remain within R<1 kpc from the center of the host even for high recoil velocities (Vrecoil = 1200 km s−1) due to the compactness of the remnant galaxy's nuclear disk. We discuss the implications of both scenarios for detectability.

We present the results of a light element abundance analysis of three solar-type main sequence (MS) dwarfs and three red giant branch (RGB) clump stars in the Hyades open cluster using high-resolution and high signal-to-noise spectroscopy. The CNO abundances of each group (MS or RGB) are in excellent star-to-star agreement and confirm that the giants have undergone first dredge-up mixing. The observed abundances are compared to predictions of a standard stellar model based on the Clemson-American University of Beirut (CAUB) stellar evolution code. The model reproduces the observed evolution of the N and O abundances, as well as the previously derived 12C/13C ratio, but it fails to predict the observed level of 12C depletion in the giants. More tellingly, the sum of the observed giant CNO abundances does not equal that of the dwarfs.

The symposium has shown the dynamism of this rapidly evolving discipline. I shall concentrate here on some highlights and some complementary informations. I conclude on open questions with some perspectives on solar & stellar activity and related planets.

Almost all the Voyages Extraordinaires written by Jules Verne refer to astronomy. In some of them, astronomy is even the leading theme. However, Jules Verne was basically not learned in science. His knowledge of astronomy came from contemporaneous popular publications and discussions with specialists among his friends or his family. In this article, I examine, from the text and illustrations of his novels, how astronomy was perceived and conveyed by Jules Verne, with errors and limitations on the one hand, with great respect and enthusiasm on the other hand. This informs us on how astronomy was understood by an “honnête homme” in the late 19th century.

We present blue optical spectra of 92 members of h and χ Per obtained with the WIYN telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory. From these spectra, several stellar parameters were measured for the B-type stars, including v sin i, Teff, log gpolar, M∗, and R∗. Strömgren photometry was used to measure Teff and log gpolar for the Be stars. We also analyze photometric data of cluster members and discuss the near- to mid-infrared excesses of Be stars.

We present results of a detailed model atmosphere abundance analysis for a variety of elements, including Fe, Ca, Si, Ti, Sc, Ni, Cr and Ba for a number of giants in the surrounding field of the LMC cluster H11, obtained from high resolution FLAMES@VLT spectra.

We present the first estimate of the black hole mass function (BHMF) of broad-line quasars (BLQSOs) that self-consistently corrects for incompleteness and the statistical uncertainty in the mass estimates, based on a sample of 9886 quasars at 1 < z < 4.5 drawn from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We find evidence for “cosmic downsizing” of black holes in BLQSOs, where the peak in their number density shifts to higher redshift with increasing black hole mass. We estimate the lifetime of the BLQSO phase to be 70 ± 5 Myr for supermassive black holes (SMBHs) at z = 1 with a mass of MBH = 109M⊙, and we constrain the maximum mass of a black hole in a BLQSO to be ~ 1010M⊙. We find that most BLQSOs are not radiating at or near the Eddington limit. Our results are consistent with models for self-regulated black hole growth, where the BLQSO phase occurs at the end of a fueling event when black hole feedback unbinds the accreting gas.

Chemical features of the local disk have firmly established the picture for the formation of the Galactic disk that the star formation has proceeded under the continuous accretion of low-metallicity gas from the halo. It sets two determinant processes for the evolution of deuterium (D), that is, the destruction of D in the interior of stars and the supply of new (nearly) primordial D associated with the gas infall. Conventional Galactic chemical evolution (GCE) models predict that this scheme leads to a monotonic decrease in D/H with time and ends up in the present-day D/H abundance (D/H)0 which is severely lower than the recently observed estimates. These predicted features are the natural results of a construction of the metal-rich (~solar abundance) local star+gas system. Here we propose that the new GCE models, that incorporate large-scale winds form the Galactic bulge which entrain heavy elements and drop them on the disk with the recent tendency of star formation in tune with the observed implications, make the system rich in both metals and D. In addition, our finding of a gradual increase in D/H with time during the last several Gyr is observationally supported by the D/H abundance for the protosolar cloud lower than (D/H)0.

I report results of kinematic studies of the Narrow-Line Region (NLR) of nearby Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) from integral field spectroscopy (IFS) obtained with the Gemini Telescopes, including mass outflow rates and corresponding kinetic power. The IFS has allowed the construction of velocity channel maps which provide a better coverage of the gas kinematics and do not support the presence of acceleration up to hundred parsec scales in the NLR as found in previous studies based solely on centroid velocity maps.

The recently completed AT20G survey provides the largest and most complete sample of high-frequency selected radio sources yet obtained, and offers new insights into the nature of the high-frequency active galaxy population. Here we focus on the optical properties of this survey which highlights the difference of the AT20G source population compared to other radio-selected AGN samples.
