We investigate 10 QSO host galaxies at 1<z<2 in the COSMOS field (Scoville et al. 2007), observed with the HST in both ACS/WFC I-band and NICMOS/NIC3 H-band. We find that our galaxies with mean z = 1.4 follow the local MBH–Mbulge relation exactly – however, not with an explicit bulge mass, but with their total stellar mass.

Dwarf M stars comprise about 75 percent of all stars in the galaxy. For several years planets orbiting M stars have been discarded as suitable places for development of life. This paradigm now has changed and terrestrial-type planets within liquid-water habitable zones (LW-HZ) around M stars are reconsidered as possible hosts for life as we know it. Nevertheless, large amount of UV radiation is emitted during flares by this stars, and it is uncertain how these events could affect biological systems. In particular UV-C λ < 290nm) exhibits the most damaging effects for living organisms. To analyze the hypothesis that UV could set a limit for the development of extraterrestrial life, we studied the effect of UV-C treatment on halophile archaea cultures. Halophile archaea are extremophile organisms, they are exposed to intense solar UV radiation in their natural environment so they are generally regarded as relatively UV tolerant. Halophiles inhabits in hipersaline environments as salt lakes but also have been found in ancient salt deposits as halites and evaporites on Earth. Since evaporites have been detected in Martian meteorites, these organisms are proposed as plausible inhabitants of Mars-like planets. Our preliminary results show that even after UV damage, the surviving cells were able to resume growth with nearly normal kinetics.

Very few abundance analyses of individual stars in metal-poor globular clusters in the galactic bulge are available. The main purpose of this study is to derive abundances in individual stars of such clusters, in order to establish their abundance pattern, trying to characterize the oldest bulge stellar populations.

The treatment of mixing is still one of the major uncertainties in stellar evolution models. One open question is how well the prescriptions for rotational mixing describe the real effects. We tested the mixing prescriptions included in the Geneva stellar evolution code (GENEC) by following the evolution of surface abundances of light isotopes in massive stars, such as boron and nitrogen. We followed 9, 12 and 15 M⊙ models with rotation from the zero age main sequence up to the end of He burning. The calculations show the expected behaviour with faster depletion of boron for faster rotating stars and more massive stars. The mixing at the surface is more efficient than predicted by prescriptions used in other codes and reproduces the majority of observations very well. However two observed stars with strong boron depletion but no nitrogen enrichment still can not be explained and let the question open whether additional mixing processes are acting in these massive stars.

If all stars form in clusters and both stars and clusters follow a power-law distribution which favours the creation of low-mass objects, the numerous low-mass clusters will be deficient in high-mass stars. Therefore, the stellar mass function integrated over the entire galaxy (the integrated galactic initial mass function; IGIMF) will be steeper at the high-mass end than the underlying stellar IMF. We show how the steepness of the IGIMF depends on the sampling method and on the assumptions made regarding the star cluster mass function. We also investigate the O-star content, integrated photometry and chemical enrichment of galaxies that result from several IGIMFs compared to more standard IMFs.

With these sung words a grandmother, a teacher of the Waitaha Maori people of New Zealand, sets in motion the telling of the great patterns of journeys. These journeys to and from distant shores are still in the minds and memories of the elder grandparent teachers of the Waitaha people.

The reference time scales maintained at the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) are constructed with data from industrial clocks and primary frequency standards operated in national metrology laboratories and observatories world-wide distributed. Clocks are compared making use of techniques of time transfer between remote sites. The algorithm of calculation relies on clock weighting and clock frequency prediction. We briefly present hereafter the influence of some clocks on the scales, as well as the possibilities for improvement.

We analyzed data from PSMSL monthly mean sea level seeking correlations between sea level fluctuations and the solar and cosmic rays 11 year cycle. The data reveals decadal variability that could be causally connected to the solar and cosmic rays cycle, since these periodic changes are correlated. It is also found that the solar (cosmic rays) cycle correlates (anti-correlates) with the mean global surface temperature anomaly. A probable explanation of the above correlations is that the solar intensity and cosmic rays variations induce oscillations in the average temperature and precipitation, with corresponding changes in the continental water and snow accumulation. Thus, for instance, a higher than average snow and water over land, and lower temperatures produce oceans thermal contraction and lower mass, implicating lower mean sea level.

We carried out the intercomparison experiments between VLBI, GPS and DMTD to show the VLBI can measure the right time difference. We produced the artificial change using by line stretcher. At the artificial change part, VLBI and DMTD show good agreement, less than 10ps. The quantity and sense of VLBI results match well with DMTD results. Consequently, the geodetic VLBI technique can measure the right time difference.

We present the results of the ICOMOS international symposium “Cultural Heritage of Astronomical Observatories (around 1900) – From Classical Astronomy to Modern Astrophysics” (Oct. 2008). The objective of the symposium was to discuss the relevance of modern observatories to the cultural heritage of humankind and to select partner observatories which, due to the date of their construction or to their architectural or scientific importance are comparable to Hamburg Observatory, as international cooperation partners for a serial trans-national application.

The value of different forms of energy contained in TDC region as well as the structure and physical characteristics of star formation in the Taurus Dark Clouds are analyzed.

Large abundance anomalies have previously been detected in horizontal-branch B-type stars. We present the first high-resolution study of isotopic anomalies and chemical abundances in six horizontal-branch B-type stars in the globular clusters NGC 6397 and NGC 6752, carried out with UVES on the VLT and compare them to those observed in chemically peculiar main-sequence stars.

We present elemental abundances of 13 microlensed dwarf and subgiant stars in the Galactic bulge, which constitute the largest sample to date. We show that these stars span the full range of metallicity from Fe/H= −0.8 to +0.4, and that they follow well-defined abundance trends, coincident with those of the Galactic thick disc.

Lithium has long been known to be a good tracer of non-standard mixing processes occurring in stellar interiors. Here we present the results of a large survey aimed at determining the surface Li abundance in a sample of about 800 giant (RGB and AGB) stars with accurate Hipparcos parallaxes. We compare the observed Li behaviour with that predicted by stellar models including rotation and thermohaline mixing.

We present results from a survey of the properties of the central black holes in nearby AGN. This shows that AGN radiating near Eddington are on average less massive now than at z ~ 1.

Millisecond and binary pulsars are the most stable astronomical standards of frequency. They can be applied to solving a number of problems in astronomy and time-keeping metrology including the search for a stochastic gravitational wave background in the early universe, testing general relativity, and establishing a new time-scale. The full exploration of pulsar properties requires that proper unbiased estimates of spin and orbital parameters of the pulsar be obtained. These estimates depend essentially on the random noise components present in pulsar timing residuals. The instrumental white noise has predictable statistical properties and makes no harm for interpretation of timing observations, while the astrophysical/geophyeical low-frequency noise corrupts them, thus, reducing the quality of tests of general relativity and decreasing the stability of the pulsar time scale.

The three young, massive star clusters found in the Galactic Centre region (Young Nuclear Cluster, the Arches and Quintuplet clusters) are among the six most massive star clusters in our Galaxy, with masses similar to low-mass, extragalactic starburst clusters. The conditions for star formation in this region are extreme and likely comparable to those found in the Hii regions in starburst galaxies and tidal-interaction zones of mergers. As the inner Galactic star clusters can be resolved, they can serve as templates for extragalactic starburst clusters. With knowledge of the spectral types, masses and ages of the individual stars, their stellar population can be studied in detail, allowing derivation of their present-day mass function (PDMF). The Quintuplet cluster, with an age of about 4 Myr, is the most extended of the three clusters and also displays a lower spatial density. To determine its mass function correctly, the distinction between cluster and field stars is therefore of particular importance. We present the first determination of a proper-motion-membership sample for the Quintuplet cluster. By comparing two high-precision astrometric VLT/NACO data sets with a time baseline of 5 years, the displacement of the Quintuplet cluster relative to the field population was measured and a selection of the proper-motion cluster members could be established, from which the PDMF can be derived.

Oscillations of the ground pressure and Z-component of geomagnetic field with a period of 160-min in December 2003 and March 2004 have been studied by regular measurements carried out over the territory of Europe and Siberia. As the analysis has shown, in December 2003 these specific oscillations are manifested synchronously from Europe up to Siberia, preferentially in the form of ‘packages’ (‘quanta’) consisting of two-five pulses. Their average amplitudes in December 2003 are of 0.0115±0.0023 mb in the ground pressure and of 0.323±0.070 nT in the Z-component. We suppose that the 160-min pulsations in those both terrestrial parameters represent the effect of a gravitational wave of the same period coming from the Galaxy center.

Evolved low mass stars (LMS) contribute not only to the synthesis of s-process nuclei, but also to modifications in the isotopic mix of light elements (Li and CNO especially), induced by proton captures. In particular, RGB and AGB stars show a wide range of Li abundances. This spread is currently attributed to deep phenomena of non-convective mixing. These processes can, in principle, either produce or destroy Li, depending on their velocity. This is due to the fact that Li production requires preserving the unstable 7Be, which has a half-life of only 53 days. Physical mechanisms devised so far to explain the existence of deep mixing in low mass stars generally fail in accounting for fast transport and in avoiding 7Be destruction; on the contrary, this is easily obtained in Intermediate Mass Stars, where Hot Bottom Burning can occur. However, as Li-rich low-mass red giants do exist, we propose here a scenario where both production and destruction of Li are possible in LMS, thanks to the buoyancy of magnetized parcels of processed matter, traveling from the H shell to the envelope at different speeds (depending on their size). Consequences of this transport for CNO nuclei are also discussed.

We present a measurement of the rate of high-z Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) using multi-epoch observations of Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Field (SXDF) with Suprime-Cam on the Subaru Telescope. Although SNe Ia are regarded as a standard candle, progenitor systems of SNe Ia have not been resolved yet. One of the key parameters to show the progenitor systems by observations is the delay time distribution between the binary system formation and subsequent SN explosion. Recently, a wide range of delay time is studied by SN Ia rates compared with an assumed cosmic star formation history. If SNe Ia with short delay time are dominant, the cosmic SN Ia rate evolution should closely trace that of the cosmic star formation. In order to detect a lot of high-z SNe Ia and measure SN Ia rates, we repeatedly carried out wide and deep imaging observations in the í-band with Suprime-Cam in 2002 (FoV~1 deg2, mi < 25.5 mag). We obtained detailed light curves of the variable objects, and 50 objects are classified as SNe Ia using the light curve fitting method at the redshift range of 0.2 < z < 1.3. In order to check the completeness and contamination of the light curve classification method, we performed Monte Carlo simulations and generated ~100,000 light curves of SNe Ia and II from templates. The control time and detection efficiency of the SN survey are also calculated using the artificial light curves. We derived an increasing trend of rates at around z ~ 1.2. Our results are almost consistent with other SN Ia rate results from low-z to high-z. Our results are the first results of high-z SN Ia rates with large statistics using light curves obtained by ground based telescopes, and give us visions of the SN rate studies for the future.
