Surprisingly high amounts of H2O have recently been reported in the circumstellar envelope around the M-type AGB star W Hya. However, substantial uncertainties remain, as the required radiative transfer modelling is difficult due to high optical depths, sub-thermal excitation and the sensitivity to the combined radiation field from the central star and dust grains.

Studies of the atomic phase of the interstellar medium, via the 21–cm spectral line of neutral hydrogen (H I), play a key rôle in our attempts to understand the structure and evolution of disk galaxies. We present here results from The H I Nearby Galaxy Survey (THINGS) and focus on the mass distribution as derived from the observed kinematics, and on the link between gas and star formation rate surface density, i.e., the Schmidt–Kennicutt law. Also, we briefly dwell on the wealth and wide variety of structures, often outlining what seem to be expanding shells surrounding sites of recent, massive star formation.

The diversity of physical phenomena embraced by the study of Chemically Peculiar (CP) stars results in an associated research community with interests that are equally diverse. This fact became once more evident during the CP#Ap Workshop that took place in Vienna (Austria) in September 2007, and which gathered over 80 members of this research community. Besides the excellent scientific outcome of the meeting, during the workshop the community had the opportunity to discuss its organization and plans for the future. Following on those plans, the Working Group has submitted a proposal for a Joint Discussion during the IAU XXVII General Assembly, in Rio de Janeiro, which has meanwhile been accepted. Moreover, through an ApN newsletter forum, the Working Group has compiled requests from the community concerning atomic and related data. These requests have been put together and will be shared with Commission 14.

New 2D dynamical models for the winds of AGB stars are presented which include hydrodynamics with radiation pressure on dust, equilibrium chemistry, time-dependent dust formation theory, and coupled frequency-dependent Monte Carlo radiative transfer. The simulations reveal a much more complicated picture of the dust formation and wind acceleration as compared to 1D spherical wind models. Triggered by non-spherical pulsations or large-scale convective motions, dust forms event-like in the cooler regions above the stellar surface which are temporarily less illuminated, followed by the radial ejection of dust arcs and clumps. These simulations can possibly explain recent high angular resolution interferometric IR observations of red giants, which show an often non-symmetric and highly time-variable innermost dust formation and wind acceleration zone. The dependence of the mass-loss rates on stellar parameters is less threshold-like as used from 1D models, and therefore, it seems quite possible that the phenomenon of dust-driven winds may occur also in less evolved red giants.

Selected topics in solar dynamo theory are being highlighted. The possible relevance of the near-surface shear layer is discussed. The role of turbulent downward pumping is mentioned in connection with earlier concerns that a dynamo-generated magnetic field would be rapidly lost from the convection zone by magnetic buoyancy. It is argued that shear-mediated small-scale magnetic helicity fluxes are responsible for the success of some of the recent large-scale dynamo simulations. These fluxes help in disposing of excess small-scale magnetic helicity. This small-scale magnetic helicity, in turn, is generated in response to the production of an overall tilt in each Parker loop. Some preliminary calculations of this helicity flux are presented for a system with uniform shear. In the Sun the effects of magnetic helicity fluxes may be seen in coronal mass ejections shedding large amounts of magnetic helicity.

The variations of the global mass of heliosphere in the 23rd cycle of the solar activity are described. The results are derived from solar corona observations and from ‘in situ’ measurements made by the space probes SOHO, VOYAGER2, ACE, WIND, and ULYSSES. It has been revealed that though the total mass of corona fluctuates during the solar activity cycle approximately in a ratio of 1 : 3, the specific mass flow (q) in the solar wind does not change in the ecliptic plane. In the polar regions the q decreases during the minimum in a third of the original value and the velocity of expansion is roughly double. These findings are valid for the 23rd solar cycle.

Giant molecular clouds (GMCs) are the major reservoirs of molecular gas in galaxies, and the starting point for star formation. As such, their properties play a key role in setting the initial conditions for the formation of stars. We present a comprehensive combined inteferometric/single-dish study of the resolved GMC properties in a number of extragalactic systems, including both normal and dwarf galaxies. We find that the extragalactic GMC properties measured across a wide range of environments, characterized by the Larson relations, are to first order remarkably compatible with those in the Milky Way. Using these data to investigate trends due to galaxy metallicity, we find that: 1) these measurements are not in accord with simple expectations from photoionization-regulated star formation theory; 2) there is no trend in the virial CO-to-H2 conversion factor on the spatial scales studied; and 3) there are measurable departures from the Galactic Larson relations in the Small Magellanic Cloud — the object with the lowest metallicity in the sample — where GMCs have velocity dispersions that are too small for their sizes. We will discuss the stability of these clouds in the light of our recent far-infrared analysis of this galaxy, and will contrast the results of the virial and far-infrared studies on the issue of the CO-to-H2 conversion factor and what they tell us about the structure of molecular clouds in primitive galaxies.

Based on the quantitative analysis of a set of wide-field color—magnitude diagrams reaching the old main sequence-turnoffs, we present new LMC star-formation histories, and their variation with galactocentric distance. Some coherent features are found, together with systematic variations of the star-formation history among the three fields analyzed. We find two main episodes of star formation in all three fields, from 1 to 4 and 7 to 13 Gyr ago, with relatively low star formation around ≃ 4–7 Gyr ago. The youngest age in each field gradually increases with galactocentric radius; in the innermost field, LMC 0514–6503, an additional star formation event younger than 1 Gyr is detected, with star formation declining, however, in the last ≃ 200 Myr. The population is found to be older on average toward the outer part of the galaxy, although star formation in all fields seems to have started around 13 Gyr ago.

ASTEP South is the first phase of the ASTEP project that aims to determine the quality of Dome C as a site for future photometric searches for transiting exoplanets and discover extrasolar planets from the Concordia base in Antarctica. ASTEP South consists of a front-illuminated 4k × 4k CCD camera, a 10 cm refractor, and a simple mount in a thermalized enclosure. A double-glass window is used to reduce temperature variations and the associated turbulence on the optical path. The telescope is fixed and observes a 4° × 4° field of view centered on the celestial South pole. With this design, A STEP South is very stable and observes with low and constant airmass, both being important issues for photometric precision. We present the project, we show that enough stars are present in our field of view to allow the detection of one to a few transiting giant planets, and that the photometric precision of the instrument should be a few mmag for stars brighter than magnitude 12 and better than 10 mmag for stars of magnitude 14 or less.

It is well established that activity and rotation diminishes during the life of sun-like main sequence (~F7-K2V) stars. Indeed, the evolution of rotation and activity among these stars appears to be so deterministic that their rotation/activity diagnostics are often utilized as estimators of stellar age. A primary motivation for the recent interest in improving the ages of solar-type field dwarfs is in understanding the evolution of debris disks and planetary systems. Reliable isochronal age-dating for field, solar-type main sequence stars is very difficult given the observational uncertainties and multi-Gyr timescales for significant structural evolution. Observationally, significant databases of activity/rotation diagnostics exist for field solar-type field dwarfs (mainly from chromospheric and X-ray activity surveys). But how well can we empirically age-date solar-type field stars using activity/rotation diagnostics? Here I summarize some recent results for F7-K2 dwarfs from an analysis by Mamajek & Hillenbrand (2008), including an improved “gyrochronology” [Period(color, age)] calibration, improved chromospheric (R′HK) and X-ray (log(LX/Lbol)) activity vs. rotation (via Rossby number) relations, and a chromospheric vs. X-ray activity relation that spans four orders of magnitude in log(LX/Lbol). Combining these relations, one can produce predicted chromospheric and X-ray activity isochrones as a function of color and age for solar type dwarfs.

A brief summary of the history of stellar evolution theory and the use of isochrones is given. The present state of the subject is summarized. The major uncertainties in isochrone construction are considered: chemical abundances and color calibrations, and the treatment of turbulent convection in stellar interior and atmosphere models. The treatment of convection affects the modeling of stellar interiors principally in two ways: convective core overshoot which increases evolutionary lifetimes, and the depth of convection zones which determines theoretical radii. Turbulence also modifies atmospheric structure and dynamics, and the derivation of stellar abundances. The symbiosis of seismic techniques with increasingly more realistic three-dimensional radiation hydrodynamics simulations is transforming the study of late-type stars. The important case of very low mass stars, which are fully convective, is briefly visited.

The molecular gas in galaxy disks shows much more galaxy to galaxy variation than does the atomic gas. Detailed studies show that this variation can be attributed to differences in hydrostatic pressure in the disks due largely to variations in the stellar surface density and the total gas surface density. One prediction of pressure modulated H2 formation is that the location where HI and H2 have equal surface densities occurs at a constant value of the stellar surface density in the disk. Observations confirm this constancy to 40%.

The Working Group, created in 1982 during the IAU General Assembly in Patras (Greece), exists to examine, organize, and coordinate the various sets of standard stars for the fields in which they are used: radial velocities, spectral classification, photometry, astrometry, and others. It also provides a forum for discussion and education. All those working with and upon standard stars are considered members of the WG.

IRAS 19312+1950 is a unique SiO maser source, exhibiting a rich set of molecular radio lines, although SiO maser sources are usually identified as oxygen-rich evolved stars, in which chemistry is relatively simple comparing with carbon-rich environments. The rich chemistry of IRAS 19312+1950 has raised a problem in circumstellar chemistry if this object is really an oxygen-rich evolved star, but its evolutional status is still controversial. In this paper, we briefly review the previous observations of IRAS 19312+1950, as well as presenting preliminary results of recent VLBI observations in maser lines. We have calculated a set of low-mass (0.85 M⊙ ≤ M ≤ 3.0 M⊙) zero metallicity and extremely metal-poor (−6.5 ≤ [Fe/H] ≤ −3.0) stellar models, including nucleosynthetic yields for 74 species. As far as we are aware these are the first detailed yields in the mass and metallicity range considered. Due to the difficulty in modelling such stars the yields naturally contain numerous uncertainties, and thus present interesting challenges for future stellar modelling. We briefly present some results in the context of the Galactic Halo star observations, and also discuss qualitatively some of the uncertainties in the modelling. We conclude by suggesting that much work is still necessary in this research area. For example, multidimensional fluid dynamics models are needed to simulate the violent proton ingestion events that occur during the core He flash and early TPAGB, observations and theory of mass loss at low metallicities are needed, the effects of reaction rate uncertainties need to be quantified, and low temperature opacities variable in carbon (and nitrogen) need to be included in the models.

We derive the chemical composition of the neutral gas in the blue compact dwarf (BCD) Pox 36 observed with FUSE. Metals (N, O, Ar, and Fe) are underabundant as compared to the ionized gas associated with H ii regions by a factor ~7. The neutral gas, although it is not pristine, is thus probably less chemically evolved than the ionized gas. This could be due to different dispersal and mixing timescales. Results are compared to those of other BCDs observed with FUSE. The metallicity of the neutral gas in BCDs seems to reach a lower threshold of ~1/50 Z⊙ for extremely-metal poor galaxies.

The solar tachocline is shown as hydrodynamically stable against nonaxisymmetric disturbances if it is true that no cos4θ term exists in its rotation law. We also show that the toroidal field of 200 Gauss amplitude which produces the tachocline in the magnetic theory of Rüdiger & Kitchatinov (1997) is stable against nonaxisymmetric MHD disturbances – but it becomes unstable for rotation periods slightly slower than 25 days. The instability of such weak fields lives from the high thermal diffusivity of stellar radiation zones compared with the magnetic diffusivity. The growth times, however, result as very long (of order of 105 rotation times). With estimations of the chemical mixing we find the maximal possible field amplitude to be ~500 Gauss in order to explain the observed lithium abundance of the Sun. Dynamos with such low field amplitudes should not be relevant for the solar activity cycle.

With nonlinear simulations of MHD Taylor-Couette flows it is shown that for the rotation-dominated magnetic instability the resulting eddy viscosity is only of the order of the molecular viscosity. The Schmidt number as the ratio of viscosity and chemical diffusion grows to values of ~20. For the majority of the stellar physics applications, the magnetic-dominated Tayler instability will be quenched by the stellar rotation.

The analysis of in-situ data recorded by Ulysses for the ICME on 24 August 2001 is carried out, using different signatures such as He++ abundance enhancement, low ion temperature, low velocity, and anomalies of abundance and charge state of heavy ion species.

The Tautenburg Exoplanet Search Telescope (TEST) is a robotic telescope system. The telescope uses a folded Schmidt Camera with a 300mm main mirror. The focal length is 940mm and it gives a 2.2° × 2.2° field of view. Dome, mount, and CCD cameras are controlled by a software bundle made by Software Bisque. The automation of the telescope includes selection of the night observing program from a given framework, taking darks and skyflats, field identification, guiding, data taking, and archiving. For the search for transiting exoplanets and variable stars an automated psf photometry based on IRAF and a lightcurve analysis based on ESO-Midas are conducted. The images and the results are managed using a PostgreSQL database.

We have carried out a large-scale investigation of the metallicity and kinematics for a number of LMC and SMC star clusters using Ca ii triplet spectra obtained at the VLT. Our sample includes 28 LMC and 16 SMC clusters, covering a wide range of ages and spatial extent of the host galaxy. We determine mean cluster velocities to about 2 km s−1 and metallicities to 0.05 dex (random error), from about 7 members per cluster. Herein we present the main results for this study for the cluster metallicity distributions, metallicity gradients, age-metallicity relations and kinematics.
