The amount of molecular gas is a key for understanding the future star formation in a galaxy. However, this quantity is difficult to infer as the cold H2 is almost impossible to observe and, especially at low metallicities, CO only traces part of the clouds, keeping large envelopes of H2 hidden from observations. In this context, millimeter dust emission tracing the cold and dense regions can be used as a tracer to unveil the total molecular gas masses. I present studies of a sample of giant molecular clouds in the Small Magellanic Cloud. These clouds have been observed in the millimeter and sub-millimeter continuum of dust emission: with SIMBA/SEST at 1.2 mm and the new LABOCA bolometer on APEX at 870 μm. Combining these with radio data for each cloud, the spectral energy distribution of dust emission are obtained and gas masses are inferred. The molecular cloud masses are found to be systematically larger than the virial masses deduced from CO emission. Therefore, the molecular gas mass in the SMC has been underestimated by CO observations, even through the dynamical masses. This result confirms what was previously observed by Bot et al. (2007). We discuss possible interpretations of the mass discrepancy observed: in the giant molecular clouds of the SMC, part of cloud's support against gravity could be given by a magnetic field. Alternatively, the inclusion of surface terms in the virial theorem for turbulent clouds could reproduce the observed results and the giant molecular clouds could be transient structures.

Commission 20 has been involved in the discussion on discovery credit rules of solar system objects (mainly concerned with asteroids) in particular with the role played by dynamicists in recovering objects by linking their orbits with previous apparitions. A working group was set up to discuss the issue that was integrated by professional astronomers as well as amateurs. There was some exchange of opinions and conflicting views, but the trend of the majority was to keep the discovery credit for the discoverer whose observations led to the object's principal designation, as expressed in the MPC existing rules (see <cfa-www.harvard.edu/iau/info/HowNamed.html>), considering only exceptionally credit for dynamicists when linkage of different apparitions led to the recovery of a lost object. The precise definition of non-trivial linkage should be worked out, and for the time being, the idea is to keep the existing MPC rules and, if necessary, to improve them, rather than starting a new set of rules.

The sunspot area fluctuations for the northern and the southern hemispheres of the Sun over the epoch of 12 cycles (12–23) are investigated. Because of the asymmetry of their probability distributions, the positive and the negative fluctuations are considered separately. The auto-correlation analysis of them shows three quasi-periodicities at 10, 17 and 23 solar rotations. The wavelets gives the 10-rotation quasi-periodicity. For the original and the negative fluctuations the correlation coefficient between the wavelet and the auto-correlation results is about 0.9 for 90% of the auto-correlation peaks. For the positive fluctuations it is also 0.9 for 70% of the peaks. For 90% of cycles in both hemispheres the auto-correlation analysis of negative fluctuations shows that two longer periods can be represented as the multiple of the shortest period. For positive fluctuations such dependences are found for more than 50% of cases.

Measuring the deuterium fractionation in different molecules can allow one to determine the physical conditions in the gas and to differentiate between gas-phase and grain surface chemical processing. Observations of molecular D/H ratios in different species towards the dense gas surrounding low-mass protostars are presented and are compared with model simulations. These consider gas-phase chemistry, accretion and desorption, and reactions on grain surfaces during the initial stages of core collapse.

The metallicity distribution and abundance ratios of the Galactic bulge are reviewed. Issues raised by different groups in recent work, in particular the high metallicity end, a comparison between the oxygen abundances derived from different indicators, the [OI] 630nm and IR OH lines, and the issue of measuring giants vs. dwarfs, are discussed. Finally, abundances in bulge globular clusters are briefly described.

We present three dimensional hydrodynamical simulations aimed at studying the dynamical and chemical evolution of the interstellar medium (ISM) in isolated dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs). This evolution is driven by the explosion of Type II and Type Ia supernovae, whose different contribution on both the dynamics and chemical enrichment is taken into account. Radiative losses are effective in radiating away the huge amount of energy released by SNe explosions, and the dSph is able to retain most of the gas allowing a long period (≥ 2 − 3 Gyr) of star formation, as usually observed in this kind of galaxies. We are able to reproduce the stellar metallicity distribution function (MDF) as well as the peculiar chemical properties of strongly O-depleted stars observed in several dSphs. The model also naturally predicts two different stellar populations, with an anti-correlation between [Fe/H] and velocity dispersion, similarly to what observed in the Sculptor and Fornax dSphs. These results derive from the inhomogeneous pollution of the SNe Ia, a distinctive characteristic of our model. We also applied the model to the peculiar globular cluster (GC) ω Cen in the hypothesis that it is the remnant of a formerly larger stellar system, possibly a dSph.

The stellar initial mass function (IMF) is a very important question in modern astrophysics. Globular clusters (GCs) are good samples for studying the IMF, but the Galactic GCs can provide only one time-scale evolutionary stage. The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is an ideal environment for studying the IMF because it contains compact clusters at different evolutionary stages. By studying the IMF at different evolutionary stages, we can see how the mass function evolves with time.

Classical broad-band photometry can provide direct comparisons of star clusters both with each other and with theoretical models of stellar evolution. The confidence with which conclusions can be drawn is often limited by the accuracy of the measurements. The present work is part of a long-term attempt to improve photometric calibrations.

Many recent observational studies have concluded that planetary systems commonly exist in multiple-star systems. At least ~20%, and presumably a larger fraction, of the known extrasolar planetary systems are associated with one or more stellar companions. These stellar companions normally exist at large distances from the planetary systems (typical projected binary separations are 102–104 AU) and are often faint (ranging from F to T spectral types). Yet, secular cyclic angular momentum exchange with these distant stellar companions can significantly alter the orbital configuration of the planets around the primaries. One of the most interesting and fairly common outcomes seen in numerical simulations is the opening of a large mutual inclination angle between the planetary orbits, forced by differential nodal precessions caused by the binary companion. The growth of the mutual inclination angle between planetary orbits induces additional large-amplitude eccentricity oscillations of the inner planet due to the quadrupole gravitational perturbation by the outer planet. This eccentricity oscillation may eventually result in the orbital decay of the inner planet through tidal friction, as previously proposed as Kozai migration or Kozai cycles with tidal friction (KCTF). This orbital decay mechanism induced by the binary perturbation and subsequent tidal dissipation may stand as an alternative formation channel for close-in extrasolar planets.

Planetary nebulae (PNe) often show large departures from spherical symmetry. The origin and development of these asymmetries is not clearly understood. The most striking structures are the highly collimated jets that are already observed in a number of evolved stars before they enter the PN phase. The aim of this project is to observe the Zeeman splitting of the OH maser of the W43A star and determine the magnetic field strength in the low density region. The 1612 MHz OH masers of W43A were observed with MERLIN to measure the circular polarization due to the Zeeman splitting of 1612 OH masers in the envelope of the evolved star W43A. We measured the circular polarization of the strongest 1612 OH masers of W43A and found a magnetic field strength of ~100μG. The magnetic field measured at the location of W43A OH masers confirms that a large scale magnetic field is present in W43A, which likely plays a role in collimating the jet.

The problem of the global stability of rotating magnetized thin disks is considered. The appropriate boundary value problem (BVP) of the linearized MHD equations is solved by employing the WKB approximation to describe the dynamical development of an initial perturbation. The eigenfrequencies as well as eigenfunctions are explicitly obtained and are verified numerically. The importance of considering the initial value problem (IVP) as well as the question of global stability for finite systems is emphasized and discussed in detail. It is further shown that thin enough disks are stable (global stability) but as their thickness grows increasing number of unstable modes participate in the solution of the IVP. However it is demonstrated that due to the localization of the initial perturbation the growth time of the instability may be significantly longer than the calculated inverse growth rate of the individual unstable eigenfunctions.

The formation and evolution of the Milky Way bulge can be constrained by studying elemental abundances of bulge stars. Due to the large and variable visual extinction in the line-of-sight towards the bulge, an analysis in the near-IR is preferred. Here, I will present some preliminary results of an on-going project in which elemental abundances, especially those of the C, N, and O elements, of bulge stars are investigated by analysing CRIRES spectra observed with the VLT.

The differential rotation of the compact elements of the large-scale magnetic fields is studied using Solar Synoptic Charts (1966–1986). It is revealed that compact magnetic elements with the similar polarity of the polar magnetic field of the Sun have a larger rotation rate than the elements with the opposite polarity at all stages in the cycle.

From the comparison of the experimental measuring data of the solar magnetic elements there are received the results: a) The differential rotations of the compact magnetic elements with negative and positive polarities have the similar behavior for the solar 20 and 21 cycles; b) It is established that in the rotation rate of compact magnetic elements there are present some variations at the time of polarity reversal of the Sun.

There is assumed that the physical understanding of the connections of differential rotation of compact magnetic elements and polarity reversal of the Sun depends upon establishing a connection between the temporal variability of spatially resolved solar magnetic elements and polar reversals.

There is a difference of a few Kelvins in the effective temperature between a model used only two-point interpolation of opacity and a model used piecewise linear interpolation of opacity. However the frequency difference between the models is of the order of several microHertz at a certain stage, which is almost 10 times worse than the observational precision of p-modes of solar-like stars. Therefore, the two-point interpolation of opacity is unsuitable in modelling of solar-like stars with element diffusion.

NH3 and CH3OH are key molecules in the chemical networks leading to the formation of complex N- and O-bearing organic molecules. However, despite a number of recent studies, there is still a lot to learn about their abundances in the solid state and how they relate to those of other N/O-bearing organic molecules or to NH3 and CH3OH abundances in the gas phase. This is particularly true in the case of low-mass young stellar objects (YSOs), for which only the recent advent of the Spitzer Space Telescope has allowed high sensitivity observations of the ices in their enveloppes. We present a combined study of Spitzer data (obtained within the Legacy program “From Molecular Cores to Planet-Forming Disks”, c2d) and laboratory spectra, leading to the detections of NH3 and CH3OH in the ices of low-mass protostars. We investigate correlations with other ice features and conclude with prospects on further studies linking these two precursors of complex organic molecules with their gas-phase products.

We compared deep images acquired with the Advanced Camera for Surveys on board of the Hubble Space Telescope with mid-IR Spitzer Space Telescope images and University College London Echelle Spectrograph spectra of NGC 346 and NGC 602, two of the youngest star clusters in the Small Magellanic Cloud. Our multi-wavelength approach allowed us to infer very different origins for the clusters: while NGC 346 is likely the result of the hierarchical collapse of a giant molecular cloud, NGC 602 is probably the result of the collision and consequent interaction of two H I shells of gas.

Horizontal branch (HB) stars play a particularly important role in the “age debate,” since they are at the very center of the long-standing “second parameter” problem. In this review, I discuss some recent progress in our understanding of the nature and origin of HB stars.

We compare the resolved properties of giant molecular clouds (GMCs) in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) and other low mass galaxies to those in more massive spirals. When measured using CO line emission, differences among the various populations of GMCs are fairly small. We contrast this result with the view afforded by dust emission in the Small Magellanic Cloud. Comparing temperature-corrected dust opacity to the distribution of H i suggests extended envelopes of CO-free H2, implying that CO traces only the highest density H2 in the SMC. Including this CO-free H2, the gas depletion time, H2-to-H i ratio, and H2-to-stellar mass/light ratio in the SMC are all typical of those found in more massive irregular galaxies.

Commission 21 consists of IAU members and consultants with expertise and interest in the study of the light of the night sky and its various diffuse components, at all accessible electromagnetic frequencies. In cosmic distance scales, the subjects of Commission 21 range from airglow and tropospheric scattering in Earth's atmosphere, through zodiacal light in the solar system, including thermal emission from interplanetary dust, integrated starlight in the Milky Way galaxy, diffuse galactic light due to dust scattering in the galactic diffuse interstellar medium, thermal emissions from interstellar dust and free free emission from ionized interstellar gas, to various diffuse extragalactic background sources, including the cosmologically important cosmic microwave background (CMB). Observations of the diffuse night sky brightness at any frequency typically include signals from several of these sources, and it has been the historic mandate of Commission 21 to foster the necessary collaboration of experts from the different astronomical sub-disciplines involved.

Strong tidal interaction with the central star can circularize the orbits of close-in planets. With the standard tidal quality factor Q of our solar system, estimated circularization timescales for close-in extrasolar planets are typically shorter than the age of the host stars. While most extrasolar planets with orbital radii a ≲ 0.1 AU indeed have circular orbits, some close-in planets with substantial orbital eccentricities have recently been discovered. This new class of eccentric close-in planets implies that either their tidal Q factor is considerably higher, or circularization is prevented by an external perturbation. Here we constrain the tidal Q factor for transiting extrasolar planets by comparing their circularization times with accurately determined stellar ages. Using estimated secular perturbation timescales, we also provide constraints on the properties of hypothetical second planets exterior to the known eccentric close-in planets.
