NGC 1266 is a nearby field galaxy observed as part of the ATLAS3D survey (Cappellari et al. 2011). NGC 1266 has been shown to host a compact (< 200 pc) molecular disk and a mass-loaded molecular outflow driven by the AGN (Alatalo et al. 2011). Very Long Basline Array (VLBA) observations at 1.65 GHz revealed a compact (diameter < 1.2 pc), high brightness temperature continuum source most consistent with a low-level AGN origin. The VLBA continuum source is positioned at the center of the molecular disk and may be responsible for the expulsion of molecular gas in NGC 1266. Thus, the candidate AGN-driven molecular outflow in NGC 1266 supports the picture in which AGNs do play a significant role in the quenching of star formation and ultimately the evolution of the red sequence of galaxies.

We present a study of the observational properties of Millisecond Pulsars (MSPs) by way of their magnetic fields, spin periods and masses. These measurements are derived through the scenario of Accretion Induced Collapse (AIC) of white dwarfs (WDs) in stellar binary systems, in order to provide a greater understanding of the characteristics of MSP populations. In addition, we demonstrate a strong evolutionary connection between neutron stars and WDs with binary companions from a stellar binary evolution perspective via the AIC process.

We present the first results from the systematic observational campaign aimed at studying rapid photometric variability (i.e., flickering) in southern symbiotic stars. In particular, we report on the discovery of strong flickering from V648Car (also known as SS73-17), a poorly studied system belonging to the small class of hard X-ray emitting symbiotic stars. To our knowledge, with a U-band flickering amplitude >0.6mag over time scales of minutes, it is one of the most significant flickering ever reported from a symbiotic star.

The central engine of AGN is too compact to be observed directly so its structure has to be inferred through the combination of spectral and variability information. Here we study the connection between optical-emitting accretion disc and X-ray emitting corona of the Seyfert NGC3783. Short light curves are consistent with optical fluctuations arising from X-ray reprocessing, but the long-term fluctuations found over the course of several years prove that at least long-term optical variability is not produced by the X-rays: at time-scales longer than 1 year the variability power in the optical is higher than in the X-rays. This indicates variability originating in the thin accretion disc itself, therefore capable of revealing its characteristics.

Recent observational and theoretical results suggest that the production rates and luminosities of high-mass X-ray binaries depend on metallicity. To test this prediction, we combine HMXB population synthesis results with numerical simulations of galaxy formation to produce synthetic populations of HMXBs in star-forming galaxies, and compare the model predictions to observations of HMXB populations in nearby and high-redshift galaxies. Our models show a fair agreement with observations only when the HMXB production and luminosities are assumed to depend strongly on metallicity.

We study non-geodesic corrections to the quasicircular motion of charged test particles in the field of magnetized slowly rotating neutron stars. The gravitational field is approximated by the Lense-Thirring geometry, the magnetic field is of the standard dipole character. Using a fully-relativistic approach we determine influence of the electromagnetic interaction (both attractive and repulsive) on the quasicircular motion. We focus on the behaviour of the orbital and epicyclic frequencies of the motion. Components of the four-velocity of the orbiting charged test particles are obtained by numerical solution of equations of motion, the epicyclic frequencies are obtained by using the standard perturbative method. The role of the combined effect of the neutron star magnetic field and its rotation in the character of the orbital and epicyclic frequencies is discussed.

We have used archival Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) to study the Hα emission properties of main sequence (MS) stars in the globular cluster 47 Tucanae. An accurate photometric measurement of their Hα equivalent width, allows us to identify objects with large Hα emission. We demonstrate that this method allows us to identify and characterise candidate cataclysmic variables (CVs) with high efficiency, reconciling observations with theoretical predictions on the number of dynamically formed CVs expected in a 47 Tucanae-like globular cluster.

During outbursts in symbiotic binaries a neutral medium in the form of a flared disk develops around their hot stars. The appearance of the disks is most probably connected with the enhanced wind from the hot star. The wind is compressed towards the equatorial plane of the hot star due to its rotation. To test this idea we calculated the ionization boundaries in the enhanced wind and thus confirmed the possibility of the formation of the neutral disk-like zones around the hot stars in symbiotic binaries during outbursts.

We present the optical light curve of the very fast nova, KT Eridani, from its outburst in November 2009 to quiescence in 2012. Comparison of our data with the 24-hour monitoring by Swift on 2010 March 31 indicates a possible anticorrelation between the X-ray and optical emissions. A period of 57 d is found in the long-term optical light curve, which we interpret as the orbital modulation of the hot spot on the white dwarf disk accreting material from an early K-type giant. Our study lends support to the notation that KT Eri may be a recurrent nova.

Taking advantage of the type-I X-ray bursts from the hard surface of a NS of the NS XRB Aql X-1 to probe the purported corona, we found, during the bursts, a clear anti-correlation between the soft and the hard X-rays, which indicates an additional cooling of the corona with the soft X-ray shower fed by the bursts. The phenomenon was also found in IGR J17473-2721, 4U 1636-536 and 4U 1608-522. The time delay between the burst emission and corona emission are different each other, but the time delay are all within 5 seconds. The similarity and difference may be understood that the corona have same mechanism but behave different structure or scale.

We have collected the parameter of 38 neutron stars (NSs) in binary systems with spin periods and measured masses. By adopting the Boot-strap method, we reproduced the procedure of mass calculated for each system separately, to determine the truly mass distribution of the NS that obtained from observation. We also applied the Monte-Carlo simulation and introduce the characteristic spin period 20 ms, in order to distinguish between millisecond pulsars (MSPs) and less recycled pulsars. The mass distributions of MSPs and the less recycled pulsars could be fitted by a Gaussian function as 1.45±0.42 M⊙ and 1.31±0.17 M⊙ (with 1σ) respectively. As such, the MSP masses are heavier than those in less recycled systems by factor of ~ 0.13M⊙, since the accretion effect during the recycling process.

High-mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) are keys to study stellar remnants that are otherwise extremely faint and difficult to observe when isolated. Vela X-1 is a well-known eclipsing HMXB composed of a very massive neutron star orbiting a B0.5I supergiant with a period of 9 days. The supergiant wind is the main feeding material for the accreting neutron star, and its properties are of prime interest to understand the physics at stakes in the accretion process.

In order to characterize the geometry and physical properties of the dense wind at a scale of a few stellar radii, we obtained infrared interferometric observations of Vela X-1 in 2010 using the VLTI/AMBER instrument in the K band (2.2 μm), and in 2012 using the VLTI/PIONIER instrument in the H band (1.6 μm).

Although the apparent disk of the supergiant and the orbital separation of the two objects are beyond the present resolution limit of the VLTI, the K-band observations partially resolve the wind envelope on the two longest baselines. We were able to measure the radius of 265±82 R⊙ for the circumstellar wind at a temperature of 1300 K, assuming a distance of 1.9 kpc. The H-band observations do not resolve the system, and we were able to set an upper limit of 112 R⊙ for the envelope radius at a temperature of 1800 K.

The question of the origin of the gas supplying the accretion process is pertinent especially in the context of enhanced activity of Galactic Center during the past few hundred years, seen now as echo from the surrounding molecular clouds, and the currently observed new cloud approaching Sgr A*. We discuss the so-called Galactic Center mini-spiral as a possible source of material feeding the supermassive black hole on a 0.1 parsec scale. The collisions between individual clumps reduce their angular momentum. and set some of the clumps on a plunging trajectory.

We conclude that the amount of material contained in the mini-spiral is sufficient to sustain the luminosity of Sgr A* at the required level. The accretion episodes of relatively dense gas from the mini-spiral passing through a transient ring mode at ~ 104 Rg provide a viable scenario for the bright phase of Galactic Center.

The magnetorotational instability (MRI) is widely believed to be the source of turbulence in accretion discs. This turbulence is responsible for the anomalous angular momentum transport in accretion discs. The turbulence will affect other aspects of the dynamics of the disc as well, and we will concentrate on two such issues: a) what kind of oscillations can be excited by the turbulence itself, and b) how the turbulence is interacting with modes that have been excited by some other agent. This is of interest in understanding the quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) that have been observed in the X-ray light curves of accreting neutron star and black hole binaries. We carry out local three dimensional (3D) magnetohydrodynamic simulations of a keplerian differentially rotating accretion disc, using a shearing box configuration taking in account the effects of the vertical stratification.

From the extreme position of disk motion, we infer the neutron star (NS) surface magnetic field strength (B0) of Z-source GX 17+2 and Cyg X-2. The inferred B0 of GX 17+2 and Cyg X-2 are ~(1–5)×108 G and ~(1–3)×108 G, respectively, which are not inferior to that of millisecond X-ray pulsars or atoll sources. It is likely that the NS magnetic axis of Z sources is parallel to the axis of rotation, which could result in the lack of pulsations in these sources.

From 13-years of the spectral optical monitoring of a well-known broad-line radio galaxy 3C 390.3 we concluded that the geometry of the broad emission-line region is complex, while still the main part of the emission is coming from the accretion disk. Here we present part of the analysis of the broad Hα and Hβ emission lines, which are showing highly variable double-peaked profiles during the monitoring period (1995-2007), with the aim to probe the accretion disk properties. The disk-like geometry plays a dominant role, but the variability of Hα and Hβ line profiles and intensities shows a presence of an additional emission-line region, that has a different nature for different periods, e.g. in one period the observed variation can be well modeled if one assumes changes in position and size of the emitting disk along the accretion disk.

In this paper, we compiled the X-ray observations for 138 Fermi blazars and calculated their Doppler factors, δγ. The calculated Doppler factors, δγ, are found strongly correlated with the γ-ray luminosity.

In this paper, we estimated the black hole mass for some blazars with available variability time scales by assuming that the γ-ray emissions are from a distance of 200Rg from the center. The results show that the central black hole masses are in the range of log (M/M⊙) = 6.45 to 8.30.

Lense-Thirring QPO model is a promising model to explain QPO phenomena (Ingram et al. (2009)). In this model the QPO results from Lense-Thirring precession of a optical translucent inner hot flow in a truncated disc geometry. Now we check this model with different types QPO (see (Belloni et al. (2011)) for a recent review) of black hole transient (BHT) GX 339-4 2010 outburst and suggest type C QPOs are mainly coincident with this model prediction while type B QPOs are not.

Mass transfer is very common in binary evolution and it dominates the evolutionary fate of binaries. Two crucial problems i.e. dynamical mass transfer and common envelope evolution, are not well understood yet. Here we focus on the first problem, and systematically show the critical mass ratio for dynamical mass transfer when the donor stars are still on the main sequence (MS).
