We solve the inverse spectral problems for the class of Sturm–Liouville operators with singular real-valued potentials from the Sobolev space $W^{s-1}_2(0,1)$, $s\in[0,1]$. The potential is recovered from two spectra or from one spectrum and the norming constants. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the spectral data to correspond to a potential in $W^{s-1}_2(0,1)$ are established.

In a paper from 2002, Hovey introduced the Gorenstein projective and Gorenstein injective model structures on R-Mod, the category of R-modules, where R is any Gorenstein ring. These two model structures are Quillen equivalent and in fact there is a third equivalent structure we introduce: the Gorenstein flat model structure. The homotopy category with respect to each of these is called the stable module category of R. If such a ring R has finite global dimension, the graded ring R[x]/(x2) is Gorenstein and the three associated Gorenstein model structures on R[x]/(x2)-Mod, the category of graded R[x]/(x2)-modules, are nothing more than the usual projective, injective and flat model structures on Ch(R), the category of chain complexes of R-modules. Although these correspondences only recover these model structures on Ch(R) when R has finite global dimension, we can set R = ℤ and use general techniques from model category theory to lift the projective model structure from Ch(ℤ) to Ch(R) for an arbitrary ring R. This shows that homological algebra is a special case of Gorenstein homological algebra. Moreover, this method of constructing and lifting model structures carries through when ℤ[x]/(x2) is replaced by many other graded Gorenstein rings (or Hopf algebras, which lead to monoidal model structures). This gives us a natural way to generalize both chain complexes over a ring R and the derived category of R and we give some examples of such generalizations.

We prove that the Bergman projection on $L^p(w)$ $(p\neq 2)$, where $w(r)=(1-r^2)^A\textrm{e}^{-B/(1-r^2)^{\alpha}}$, is not bounded.

We characterize those commuting pairs of operators on Hubert space that have the symmetrized bidisc as a spectral set in terms of the positivity of a hermitian operator pencil (without any assumption about the joint spectrum of the pair). Further equivalent conditions are that the pair has a normal dilation to the distinguished boundary of the symmetrized bidisc, and that the pair has the symmetrized bidisc as a complete spectral set. A consequence is that every contractive representation of the operator algebra A(Γ) of continuous functions on the symmetrized bidisc analytic in the interior is completely contractive. The proofs depend on a polynomial identity that is derived with the aid of a realization formula for doubly symmetric hereditary polynomials, which are positive on commuting pairs of contractions.

We study families of integer polynomials having roots very close to each other.

For a large class of subsets $\varOmega\subset\mathbb{R}^{N}$ (including unbounded domains), we discuss the Fredholm and properness properties of second-order quasilinear elliptic operators viewed as mappings from $W^{2,p}(\varOmega;\mathbb{R}^{m})$ to $L^{p}(\varOmega;\mathbb{R}^{m})$ with $N\ltp\lt\infty$ and $m\geq1$. These operators arise in the study of elliptic systems of $m$ equations on $\varOmega$. A study in the case of a single equation ($m=1$) on $\mathbb{R}^{N}$ was carried out by Rabier and Stuart.

In this paper conditions are given that imply that a convolution operator has the same spectrum on all of the spaces Lp(G), 1≦p≦∞.

In this paper we give an elegant generalization of the formula of Frobenius–Stickelberger from elliptic curve theory to all hyperelliptic curves. A formula of Kiepert type is also obtained by a limiting process from this generalization. In the appendix a determinant expression of D. G. Cantor is also derived.

We consider the following boundary value problem

where λ > 0 and 1 ≤ p ≤ n – 1 is fixed. The values of λ are characterized so that the boundary value problem has a positive solution. Further, for the case λ = 1 we offer criteria for the existence of two positive solutions of the boundary value problem. Upper and lower bounds for these positive solutions are also established for special cases. Several examples are included to dwell upon the importance of the results obtained.

Over a field of characteristic p>0 the group algebra of a finite group has a unique maximal nilpotent ideal, the Jacobson radical of the algebra. The powers of the radical form a decreasing and ultimately vanishing series of ideals and it would be of interest to determine the least vanishing power. Apart from the work of Jennings (3) on p-groups little is known in general (cf. (5)) about this particular power of the radical (cf. Remarks of Brauer in (4), p. 144. Problem 15). In this paper we give non-trivial lower bounds for the index of the least vanishing power of the radical when the group is p-soluble. Of the lower bounds we give we show that that lower bound, which is dependent solely on the order of the group, is the best possible such bound and that this bound is invalid if the assumption of p-solubility is omitted.

With every graph G (finite and undirected with no loops or multiple lines) there is associated a graph L(G), called the line-graph of G, whose points correspond in a one-to-one manner with the lines of G in such a way that two points of L(G) are adjacent if and only if the corresponding lines of Gare adjacent. This concept was originated by Whitney (3). In a similar way one can associate with G another graph which we call its total graph and denote by T(G). This new graph has the property that a one-to-one correspondence can be established between its points and the elements (the set of points and lines) of G such that two points of T(G) are adjacent if and only if the corresponding elements of G are adjacent (if both elements are points or both are lines) or theyare incident

An operator $T$ on a Banach space $X$ is said to be weakly supercyclic (respectively $N$-supercyclic) if there exists a one-dimensional (respectively $N$-dimensional) subspace of $X$ whose orbit under $T$ is weakly dense (respectively norm dense) in $X$. We show that a weakly supercyclic hyponormal operator is necessarily a multiple of a unitary operator, and we give an example of a weakly supercyclic unitary operator. On the other hand, we show that hyponormal operators are never $N$-supercyclic. Finally, we characterize $N$-supercyclic weighted shifts.

In this paper the spectral properties of the abstract Klein–Gordon equation are studied. The main tool is an indefinite inner product known as the charge inner product. Under certain assumptions on the potential V, two operators are associated with the Klein–Gordon equation and studied in Krein spaces generated by the charge inner product. It is shown that the operators are self-adjoint and definitizable in these Krein spaces. As a consequence, they possess spectral functions with singularities, their essential spectra are real with a gap around 0 and their non-real spectra consist of finitely many eigenvalues of finite algebraic multiplicity which are symmetric to the real axis. One of these operators generates a strongly continuous group of unitary operators in the Krein space; the other one gives rise to two bounded semi-groups. Finally, the results are applied to the Klein–Gordon equation in ℝn.

Rings and distributive lattices can both be considered as semirings with commutative regular addition. Within this framework we can consider subdirect products of rings and distributive lattices. We may also require that the semirings with these restrictions are regarded as algebras with two binary operations and the unary operation of additive inversion (within the additive subgroup of the semiring). We can also consider distributive lattices with the two binary operations and the identity mapping as the unary operation. This makes it possible to speak of the join of ring varieties and distributive lattices. We restrict the ring varieties in order that their join with distributive lattices consist only of subdirect products. In certain cases these subdirect products can be obtained via a general construction of semirings by means of rings and distributive lattices.

Let L be a one-to-one operator of type ω in L2(ℝn), with ω∈[0, π/2), which has a bounded holomorphic functional calculus and satisfies the Davies–Gaffney estimates. Let p(·): ℝn→(0, 1] be a variable exponent function satisfying the globally log-Hölder continuous condition. In this article, the authors introduce the variable Hardy space $H_L^{p(\cdot )} ({\open R}^n)$ associated with L. By means of variable tent spaces, the authors establish the molecular characterization of $H_L^{p(\cdot )} ({\open R}^n)$. Then the authors show that the dual space of $H_L^{p(\cdot )} ({\open R}^n)$ is the bounded mean oscillation (BMO)-type space ${\rm BM}{\rm O}_{p(\cdot ),{\kern 1pt} L^ * }({\open R}^n)$, where L* denotes the adjoint operator of L. In particular, when L is the second-order divergence form elliptic operator with complex bounded measurable coefficients, the authors obtain the non-tangential maximal function characterization of $H_L^{p(\cdot )} ({\open R}^n)$ and show that the fractional integral L−α for α∈(0, (1/2)] is bounded from $H_L^{p(\cdot )} ({\open R}^n)$ to $H_L^{q(\cdot )} ({\open R}^n)$ with (1/p(·))−(1/q(·))=2α/n, and the Riesz transform ∇ L−1/2 is bounded from $H_L^{p(\cdot )} ({\open R}^n)$ to the variable Hardy space Hp(·)(ℝn).

Let X = (X0, X1) and Y = (Y0, Y1) be Banach couples and suppose T:X→Y is a linear operator such that T:X0→Y0 is compact. We consider the question whether the operator T:[X0, X1]θ→[Y0, Y1]θ is compact and show a positive answer under a variety of conditions. For example it suffices that X0 be a UMD-space or that X0 is reflexive and there is a Banach space so that X0 = [W, X1]α, for some 0<α<1.

Rings of invariants are identified for some automorphisms θ of certain iterated skew polynomial rings R, including the enveloping algebra of sl2(k), the Weyl algebra A1 and their quantizations. We investigate how finite-dimensional simple R-modules split over the ring of invariants Rθ and how finite-dimensional simple Rθ-modules extend to R.

The well-posedness of the Ostrovsky equation is considered. Local well-posedness for data in $\tilde{H}^s(\mathbb{R})$ $(s\geq-\frac{1}{8})$ and global well-posedness for data in $\tilde{L}^{2}(\mathbb{R})$ are obtained.
