We prove the following theorem, which settles a conjecture made by J. S. Lew (2, p.379).

We study commutation properties of subsets of right-angled Artin groups and trace monoids. We show that if Γ is any graph not containing a four-cycle without chords, then the group G(Γ) does not contain four elements whose commutation graph is a four-cycle; a consequence is that G(Γ) does not have a subgroup isomorphic to a direct product of non-abelian groups. We also obtain corresponding and more general results in the monoid case.

1. It is well known [1] that there is a one-to-one relation between solutions of the Darboux equation and the wave equation. The purpose of this paper is to show that some recent results in the fractional calculus can be used to obtain a similar connection between solutions of Darboux's equation and second order linear hyperbolic differential equations with constant coefficients.

We prove the existence of a solution u(.,.;α,β) of the Darboux problem uxy∈F(x, y, u), u(x,0) = α(x), u(0, y) = β(y), which is continuous with respect to (α,β). We assume that F is Lipschitzean with respect to u but not necessarily convex valued.

This paper deals with the construction of exact and analytical-numerical solutions with a priori error bounds for systems of the type ut = Auxx, A1u(0, t) + B1ux (0, t) = 0, A2u (1, t) + B2ux (1, t) = 0, 0 < x < 1, t > 0, u(x, 0) = f(x), where A1, A2, B1 and B2 are matrices for which no simultaneous diagonalizable hypothesis is assumed, and A is a positive stable matrix. Given an admissible error ε and a bounded subdomain D, an approximate solution whose error with respect to an exact series solution is less than ε uniformly in D is constructed.

We discuss the finiteness of (two-term) silting objects. First, we investigate new triangulated categories without silting object. Second, we study two classes of $\tau$-tilting-finite algebras and give the numbers of their two-term silting objects. Finally, we explore when $\tau$-tilting-finiteness implies representation-finiteness and obtain several classes of algebras in which a $\tau$-tilting-finite algebra is representation-finite.

Let $w(z)$ be an arbitrary transcendental solution of the fourth (respectively, second) Painlevé equation. Concerning the frequency of poles in $|z|\le r$, it is shown that $n(r,w)\gg r^2$ (respectively, $n(r,w)\gg r^{3/2}$), from which the growth estimate $T(r,w)\gg r^2$ (respectively, $T(r,w)\gg r^{3/2}$) immediately follows.

Suppose that G is an abelian group and that A ⊂ G is finite and contains no non-trivial three-term arithmetic progressions. We show that |A+A| »ε|A|(log|A|)⅓−ε.

Let α be an automorphism of a free group of rank n. The Scott conjecture, proved by Bestvina-Handel, asserts that the fixed subgroup of α has rank at most n. We give a short alternative proof of this result using R-trees.

We are concerned with the degenerate anisotropic problem

We first establish the existence of an unbounded sequence of weak solutions. We also obtain the existence of a non-trivial weak solution if the nonlinear term f has a special form. The proofs rely on the fountain theorem and Ekeland's variational principle.

We show that an inverse transversal of a regular semigroup is multiplicative if and only if it is both weakly multiplicative and a quasi-ideal. Examples of quasi-ideal inverse transversals that are not multiplicative are known. Here we give an example of a weakly multiplicative inverse transversal that is not multiplicative. An interesting feature of this example is that it also serves to show that, in an ordered regular semigroup in which every element x has a biggest inverse x0, the mapping x↦x00 is not in general a closure; nor is x↦x** in a principally ordered regular semigroup.

A barrel in a locally convex Hausdorff space E[τ] is a closed absolutely convex absorbent set. A σ-barrel is a barrel which is expressible as a countable intersection of closed absolutely convex neighbourhoods. A space is said to be barrelled (countably barrelled) if every barrel (σ-barrel) is a neighbourhood, and quasi-barrelled (countably quasi-barrelled) if every bornivorous barrel (σ-barrel) is a neighbourhood. The study of countably barrelled and countably quasi-barrelled spaces was initiated by Husain (2).

Let P be a semilattice. In (5), a ring T is called a supplementary semilattice sum of subringsTα (α∈P) if the following conditions hold: TαTβ⊆Tαβ for all α,β∈P, and for each α∈P. Thus, as an abelian group, T is a direct sum of the additive subgroups Tα (α∈P), and the multiplicative structure of T is strongly influenced by the semilattice P. Properties of these rings have been studied extensively in (2), (3), (5), and (6).

Let (X, C) be a germ of a 3-fold X with terminal singularities along an irreducible reduced complete curve C with a contraction f:(X, C) → (Z, o) such that C = f−1 (o)red and −KX is ample. Assume that (X, C) contains a point of type (IC) or (IIB). We complete the classification of such germs in terms of a general member containing C.

Much has been written on inequalities concerning positive definite matrices, but a new insight may be gained by examining inequalities from the standpoint of the inverse matrix. The standard inequality of Hölder can then be used in a more fruitful manner. This leads to some new results and a rediscovery of some known results.

The resolution problem of the system

where U(t), A, B, D and Uo are bounded linear operators on H and B* denotes the adjoint operator of B, arises in control theory, [9], transport theory, [12], and filtering problems, [3]. The finite-dimensional case has been introduced in [6,7], and several authors have studied the infinite-dimensional case, [4], [13], [18]. This paper gives a number which is used to determine the component number of links from their associated planar graphs. In particular, we use this number to determine the component numbers of links whose associated planar graphs are fans, wheels and 2-sums of graphs.

Asymptotic approximations to the Green's functions of Sturm–Liouville boundary-value problems on graphs are obtained. These approximations are used to study the regularized traces of the differential operators associated with these boundary-value problems. Various inverse spectral problems for Sturm–Liouville boundary-value problems on graphs resembling those considered in Halberg and Kramer's ‘A generalization of the trace concept' (Duke Mathematics Journal27 (1960), 607–617), for Sturm–Liouville problems, and Pielichowski's ‘An inverse spectral problem for linear elliptic differential operators' (Universitatis Iagellonicae Acta Mathematica27 (1988), 239–246), for elliptic boundary-value problems, are solved.

The singular boundary-value problem $(g(x'(t)))'=\mu f(t,x(t),x'(t))$, $x(0)=x(T)=0$ and $\max\{x(t):0\le t\le T\}=A$ is considered. Here $\mu$ is the parameter and the negative function $f(t,u,v)$ satisfying local Carathéodory conditions on $[0,T]\times(0,\infty)\times(\mathbb{R}\setminus\{0\})$ may be singular at the values $u=0$ and $v=0$ of the phase variables $u$ and $v$. The paper presents conditions which guarantee that for any $A>0$ there exists $\mu_A>0$ such that the above problem with $\mu=\mu_A$ has a positive solution on $(0,T)$. The proofs are based on the regularization and sequential techniques and use the Leray–Schauder degree and Vitali’s convergence theorem.
